    3. We are not going on our trip to the East Coast after all, so will be home. The poor old Suburban truck engine died, so we'll be spending our trip money on a new one to keep it going for another 225,000 miles. Hubby purchased a new computer and gave me his Pentium, so now I can write messages on my new/used computer directly to the Internet. Those who wish to contact me please use the following E-Mail address instead of the old one: dcr555@prodigy.net The local BB through which I was receiving my messages may quit soon. Anyone interested in my abstracts of the Goochland Co., VA records for the PAGE Family and new Census book for PAGE families in all of the VA counties, 1790-1850, can contact me on my Prodigy address above to request a list of them and their prices. 3. Just a note, perhaps of interest: The American's Creed can be found in the Boy Scout Handbook. When counselling the Citizenship in the Nation merit badge, I always have the boys read the Creed. I also warn them that if I'm on their Eagle Board of Review, that I'll ask them about it. It is a wonderful affirmation of what it means to be an American citizen. Tonight I'm going to insert a copy of slworley@theshop.net's wonderful write-up about the creed and William Tyler Page into my handbook, so I can share it with my Scouts. 3. As requested here is the wonderfull story about William Tyler Page and the story behind the man that wrote the American Creed: The American's Creed was written by : William Tyler Page, who was the Clerk of the U.S. House of Representatives, when he wrote "The American's Creed" in 1917. It was accepted by the House on behalf of the American people on April 3, 1918. "The American's Creed" author 'William Tyler Page' April 3, 1918 "I believe in the United States of America as a Government of the people by the people, for the people, whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed; a democracy in a Republic; a sovereign Nation of many sovereign States; a perfect Union, one and inseparable; established upon those principals of freedom, equality, justice, and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes. I therefore believe it is my duty to my Country to love it; to support its constitution; to obey its laws; to respect its flag, and to defend it against all enemies." William Tyler Page, 1918. Historical Notes: The American's Creed was a result of a nationwide contest for writing a National Creed, which would be a brief summary of the American political faith founded upon things fundamental in American history and tradition. The contest was the idea of Henry Sterling Chapin, Commissioner of Education of New York State. Over three thousand entries were received, and William Tyler Page was declared to be the winner. James H. Preston, the mayor of Baltimore, presented an award to Page in the House of Representatives Office Building on April 3, 1918. The Speaker of the House of Representatives and the commissioner of education of the state of New York accepted the Creed for the United States, and the proceedings relating to the award were printed in the Congressional Record of April 13, 1918. It was a time when patriotic sentiments were very much in vogue. The United States had been a participant in World War I only a little over a year at the time the Creed was adopted. The author of the American's Creed, William Tyler Page, was a descendant of John Page, who had come to America in1650 and had settled in Williamsburg, Virginia. Another ancestor, Carter Braxton , had signed the Declaration of Independence. Still another ancestor, John Tyler, was the tenth president of the United States. William Tyler Page had come to Washington at the age of thirteen to serve as a Capitol Page. Later he became an employee of the Capitol building and served in that capacity for almost sixty-one years. In 1919 he was elected clerk of the House. Thirteen years later, when the Democrats again became a majority party, they created for Page the office of minority clerk of the House of Representatives. He held this position for the remainder of his life. Referring to the Creed, Page said: "It is the summary of the fundamental principles of the American political faith as set forth in its greatest documents, its worthiest traditions, and its greatest leaders." His wording of the Creed used passages and phrases from the Declaration of Independence, the Preamble to the Constitution, Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, and Daniel Webster's reply to Robert Y. Hayne in the Senate in 1830. To: slworley@theshop.net Thank you for putting together information regarding William Tyler Page on your homepage. He was my great-grandfather and it's wonderful to share this with my own children. Janet Rossini "I believe in the United States of America as a government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed; a democracy in a republic; a sovereign Nation of many sovereign States; a perfect union, one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice, and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes. 3. Folks, please forgive me for this method of spreading the word about a scam going around. I retired from BellSouth after 31 years service and can vouch for the attached message. It's principle purpose ( you had to be served from an electronic central office) was to allow a subscriber to dial a service code from a phone to allow a long distance call to be charged to his/her home phone. M. Dean Hunt Louisville, KY Thought you might like to know this..................... From: Robin L. Browne I received a telephone call from an individual identifying himself as an AT&T Service Technician who was conducting a test on our telephone lines. He stated that to complete the test we should touch nine (9), zero (0), the pound sign (#) and then hang up. Luckily, we were suspicious and refused. Upon contacting the telephone company we were informed that by pushing 90# you give the requesting individual full access to your telephone line, which allows them to place a long distance telephone calls billed to your home phone number. We were further informed that this scam has been originating from many of the local jails/prisons. I have also verified this information with UCB Telecomm. Please beware. This sounds like an Urban Legend - IT IS NOT!!! I further called GTE Security this morning and verified that this is definitely possible. DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE. The GTE Security department requested that I share this information with EVERYONE I KNOW!!! Could you PLEASE pass this on. If you have mailing lists and/or newsletters from organizations you are connected with, I encourage you to pass on this information. Note from Sue - this is very real!! We got the same message from internal Telecommunications at 3M - they notified me as the receptionist as some of the 3M locations were being hit. It is very real, and one of the local companies here had over $3000 added to their phone bill. My friend Vic sent this to me, so watch out. Bob G.

    3. I have discovered a cache of Page tintypes (in my own basement, no less) that are the first real clues I have on my husband's Page line. They are labeled with names only, no dates or places, but I suspect all three generations were in Kentucky, and at least the most recent was definitely in Woodville and Kevil, McCracken Co, KY. Does anyone recognize these names? Starting from most recent: MINNIE LOUISE PAGE, b. KY (probably McCracken Co.)19 Dec., 1871 m. Shelby Lovell Dale, 12 March, 1893, near Woodville, KY. She had about 12 younger siblings, but the only names I have are Will (who died at age 44 in Woodville of typhoid fever) and Russell. Minnie's parents: JAMES WILLIAM PAGE (prob. b. about 1858 ) and Hepsy Lucinda Taylor. Hepsy Lucinda had a twin sister, Margaret Clarinda Taylor Morgan. Another portrait is of IRENE BERTHA PAGE TREVOLLA(?)--may be James William's sister. There are also tintypes of two young boys, WILLIAM ROBERT PAGE and CHARLES WALTER PAGE, J.W.'s brothers, perhaps? James William Page's parents (b. abt. 1830-35): WILLIAM JOHNSON PAGE and Louisa Jane Sanders Does anyone know how late tintypes were made? All of these portraits are on tin except one of James William and Hepsy Lucinda as young adults. That one is a photograph on cardboard. Karen Dale KDale60909@aol.com

    3. It seems strange to be answering my own query, but after very few responses and further research here goes! I found in the NY Fed. Census for 1810 (only one year proceeding the painter's birth) only two Page family entries --- Levi Page and Levi Page, Sr.. [I was disappointed to also find that the census records for that county were missing from my Automated Archives, Inc. CD-ROMs for the next couple of censuses! Does anyone have Albany Co. NY Fed. Census records of Pages for 1820 and 1830?] I found that a Levi Page who m. (2?) Tamer (Gale) Dunnel were indeed the parents of the famous painter, William Page. Another bio. of the painter provides additional info about him: William Page, the American Painter, m. (1) Lavinia Twihill and had three children. They were divorced. He m. (2) Sara A. Dougherty and in 1844 went to Boston from N.Y.C.. He divorced her and m. (3) in Italy in 1858 Sophia S. Hitchcock and by her had six children. He lived the last years of his life at Eagleswood, NJ, and died at Tottenville, Staten Island, NY at age 74. Now trying to place the Levi Pages to find his father's ancestry: I have in the George Page of Branford, Conn. line a Levi Page, b. c. 1770 in Wallingford, New Haven Co., Conn. who went to Conway, Mass. [per Jacobus]. This later Levi Page was the son of Theophilus and Mehitabel (Merriman) Page of Wallingford, Conn.. I have nothing further on him. Cemetery Records found in the N.S.D.A.R. show a Levi Page who d. 16 May 1809 at age 49; i.e., b.c. 1760. This Levi could not have been the father unless they were doing artificial insemination at that time! There was another Levi Page, b. 3 Feb. 1772 in Coventry, Tolland Co., Conn., who was the son of Thomas 4 and Azubah (Strong) Page of the line of John Page of Haverhill through Thomas 3, Cornelius 2, and John 1 Page. The first mentioned Thomas Page went to Coventry in 1746 and was the progenitor of the Pages in that town. There is no info as to what happened to this Levi Page, but only his brothers Elias and Gad Page remained in Coventry, Conn. and had children. Gad Page, b. 5 March 1764, d. as a Captain on 26 Jan. 1841, m. Abigail Loomis on 27 Nov. 1788 in Coventry and received a pension for service as a Pvt. in a Conn. unit in the Rev. War. Elias Page, b. 22 Oct. 1761, m. Ester Kingsbury on 2 Mar. 1786 in Coventry. My gut feeling is that this latter Levi Page of Coventry, Tolland Co., Conn. may have been the Levi Page who was the father of the famous American Painter, William Page. John's parents were William Page and Elizabeth Jones. Do you have any information on William that was married to Elizabeth Jones?
