John PAGE, Jr., b. ca. 1761-2 in Orange Co., VA, md. Mary COLLINS there on 22 Dec 1783 and moved to Madison Co., KY by 1796 and was in Howard Co., MO by the 1830 Census. He d. in 1835 in Howard Co., MO and his wf. was listed in the 1840 Census there as "Polley PAGE". John Jr.'s birthdate is estimated from the first year that he appears in the Personal Property Tax Lists of Orange Co., VA with his father, John Sr.---1783. At that time, males became "taxable" at age 21. This would put his tentative birthdate as ca. 1761-1762 (1761 if he reached 21 just after the 1782 list was taken and 1762 if he didn't become of age until 1783). On his marriage (or bond) record, it states that John Jr. was the son of John and Elizabeth PAGE....this from "Orange County, Virginia Marriages" by Vogt & Kethley. Also in this book is the record of a marriage for John PAGE and Elizabeth MIDDLEBROOK dated 1777. This is a later marriage for John Jr.'s father; but it is evident that this Elizabeth MIDDLEBROOK could not be John Jr.'s mother. Perhaps his mother was also an Elizabeth. John, Sr. purchased land in Orange Co. from 1758 to 1769. His will was signed in September of 1789 and probated the next month. He names his wife, Elizabeth, and children in the will. The children were: (the four youngest said to be "under age") John PAGE Mary FURNIS (md. to Jacob FURNIS) James PAGE William PAGE Elijah PAGE Betsey PAGE Ann PAGE The first two children were obviously by John Sr.'s first wife whose name is not known at this time. James is questionable as to which wife was his mother, but the last four were most probably by the 2nd wife The fact that James and William were named executors of John's will might indicate that James was by the 1st wife and William by the 2nd wife----to take care of the interests of the children of both wives. John, Jr. was left two tracts of land, one called "Curtis' Tract" and the other called the "Goose Pond Tract". John & Mary sold this land in Orange Co. in deeds dated 1794-1799. In two of these deeds dated 1796 and 1799, John and Mary are described as being in Madison Co., KY. John, Sr. also left land to his dau., Ann, that lay in Rockingham Co., VA, so he had holdings elsewhere than in Orange Co.. Another tract of land described as being "on the head of South River" was left to sons James and William PAGE. This was no doubt the land that he had purchased in 1760 which was described as being "on the branches of the south branch of the Rapidan River" in Orange Co. at that time. Other land was left to the remaining children that will not be discussed here. At any rate, by the 1810 Census, none of John Sr.'s children were still in Orange Co.. John PAGE, Jr. and wf. Mary COLLINS' children were: John PAGE Frances PAGE - md. Samuel COY in 1801 Polly PAGE - md. Peter FORD Ann PAGE - md. J. PARKS Elizabeth PAGE, (b. 1785, d. 1860 in Grundy Co., MO - md. John WARMOUTH in 1805 Tandy C. PAGE James L. PAGE, b. ca. 1810, md. Malinda ? - lived in Howard Co., MO St. Clair PAGE, b. ? , d. 17 Jun 1852 - md. the dau. of John & Sarah FISHBACK (who may have been the widow of a MORIN) If anyone can add or correct any of the above, the information will be welcomed by all, I'm sure. I'll be gone for 7-10 days in case anyone wants to contact me. Our son will be at the house to download for me, so my messages received during that time will be saved and I'll respond to them when I return. Happy hunting to all! Dolores in California

Carol, Here is what I have. I have also included some notes and emails with some really good information. Let me know if anybody has additional information on any of these family members. Lynda Troutt Murphy 1. WILLIAM1 PAGE was born in Richmond, Virginia. He married ELIZABETH JONES Abt. 1765. Notes for WILLIAM PAGE: As for James PAGE, father of Gideon, we do not know his ancestry for certain. It is believed (but we need more proof) that James' father was Dr. William Byrd PAGE of Richmond, VA who md. Miss JONES. Mrs. Kyle of Roanoke can give you more on this if you contact her. If this can be proven, then your PAGE line ties in with the so-called "Prominent PAGE Family" of Virginia which comes down from Col. John PAGE. Children of WILLIAM PAGE and ELIZABETH JONES are: 2. i. He married (1) MARGARET SIFFORD WARD 1831, daughter of ADAM SIFFORD and HANNAH LINKENHOKE. He married (2) ELIZABETH F. GORDON March 29, 1855. He married (3) MARY JANE BOGAS December 27, 1868 in Enoch Bogas' House by ?. T. Tabler, minister, daughter of ENOCH BOGAS and MARGARET. Notes for GIDEON PAGE: Listed in the 1840 Botetourt County, Virginia Census. Listed on the 1850 Census of Botetourt County, Virginia with William L. as his child. Obviously, from your most recent message, you did not receive my post of 10 Jan to you in which I gave you the reading of the 1850 Census of Botetourt Co., VA for Gideon PAGE which listed your William L. as a child. I was waiting to send you more until we could determine whether this was "your" William L. or not. Some- times things are not as they seem and work out to not be who we think they are....so I do not jump to conclusions before all of the facts are in. I also gave you the marr. record of Gideon PAGE and Margaret JEFFORDS (26 Jan 1831 by Abraham C. Dempsey). The clerk may have erred in Margaret's last name is it is given as SIFFORD by my correspondent on that family. Margaret's parents were named as Adam SIFFORD, Jr. (could this be Seifert?) and his wf. Hannah LINKENHOKE. I've been having trouble with some of my outgoing messages lately, but can't find out whether or not they were delivered until the persons I directed them to write back and I can tell that they didn't receive them. I'm pleased that you have contacted someone else who could give you more information and want to thank you for sharing it with me. Where did your William L. PAGE migrate, if he did? In my 10 Jan message, I asked if you might know Ann Kyle of Roanoke ....a long shot, I'm sure, but one never knows. She is a very good friend of mine....we met through genealogy and have met several times over the years. She's a great gal! Ann knows quite a bit about the Virginia PAGE families. You might like to contact her. Her phone would be under Harold Kyle. Back to your Gideon.... He first shows up in Botetourt Co. in the 1840 Census, but I found no deeds whereby he had any land. Another record that I have is the following second marriage for your Gideon: Guideon R. Page, age 54 yrs, widowed, a cooper, b. Bedford Co., VA. Parents: James & Fanny PAGE and Mary Jane Bogas - md. on 27 Dec 1868 at Enoch Bogas' house. The bride is 29 yrs. of age, single, the dau. of Enoch & Margaret Bogas They were md. by ?. T. Tabler, minister >From there back, I have that James PAGE and Frances Bright REYNOLDS were md. in Bedford Co., VA in 1777. James' father, William PAGE, gave consent for his son's marriage. Frances' father is given as Charles REYNOLDS. Some of the above information was shared with me by: Mrs. Barbara Sudduth Lyle 1160 Sunnyside Drive Lena, Mississippi 39094 She descends from James PAGE and Frances B. REYNOLDS. I don't know if she is on a computer BB or not; but she'll be glad to hear from you, I know. As for James PAGE, father of Gideon, we do not know his ancestry for certain. John PAGE. Perhaps you have seen the book written on that family by R.C.M. Page. A PAGE Society has been formed in VA which plans to update this book sometime in the future. Mrs. Kyle can also give you information on that and possibly take you back on your PAGE line. So much for now....good luck....and keep in touch on your findings. Dolores Notes for MARGARET SIFFORD WARD: Name could be "Seifert" Child of GIDEON PAGE and MARGARET WARD is: 8. i. WILLIAM L.4 PAGE, b. August 15, 1839; d. January 29, 1927.

(couldn't read the last no. in the making of this deed, but it was recorded in 1765), his wife, Elizabeth, was named in the deed. Here are the particulars from my Abstracts of the Bedford Co., VA Deeds, 1754-1800: Deed Bk. 1, p. 413-414: Sarah Lynch Made: 27 Apr 1761 to Recorded: same day William PAGE, counties of residence not given for either party For 8 lbs. (money) - 184 acres on both sides of Fishing Creek, bordering the land of Micajah Terril. Sarah was the executrix of Charles Lynch, dec'd and, in the next deed, she deeded land to Charles Lynch, Jr., son of the deceased Charles Lynch (p. 414). Deed Bk. 2, p. 510-512: William Page of Bedford Co. Made: 19 Sep 17-- to Recorded: 26 Feb 1765 Jesse Tate, same place For 30 lbs.(money - made a profit!) - PAGE said to be moving - 184 acres (same land as above). William's wife, Elizabeth, mentioned in the deed as joining her husband, but did not sign with him and was not examined separately to relinquish her dower rts. in the land. Wits.: An'd Poor Jno. McKinney Do you suppose that the above is the same William of the following deed and the same man as the father of those Bedford Co., VA PAGE men in my last post????? Deed Bk. 4, p. 222-223: David Matlock of Pittsylvania Co., VA Made: 2? Oct 1771 to Recorded: too pale to William Page of Bedford Co. read For 40 lbs. - 232 acres of land in Bedford Co. bordering the lands of Kitchen(?) and Steven Chenault. Wits.: John Merritt(?) David Martin James Walker I found not grantor deed whereby William PAGE disposed of this land nor did I find any probate record for either William or an Elizabeth PAGE in the probate records of Bedford Co., VA. Anyone have any more records for this William???? Do you suppose this is the same older William PAGE who was in those Pers. Prop. Taxes of Bedford Co. later on????? If so, why wasn't he there before 1795???? Could this later one be a son of the one of the 1761 deed???? Questions, questions, questions! Seems like the more information we get on this, the more questions come up! Has anyone solved this problem yet? Dolores
In response to the post by Lynda Troutt Murphy on the family of William PAGE & Elizabeth JONES on 6 July 1998 and the Bedford Co., VA PAGE researchers, I'd like to submit this information from the John Wesley Page Papers (5 volumes) at the West VA State Archives in Charleston, W VA. J. W. Page was a descendant of James PAGE and Frances REYNOLDS of Bedford Co., VA and did extensive research to find James' parentage. Here is what he wrote on that: X 73-75: (reference for the following in these papers) "DR. WILLIAM BYRD PAGE (1751- ) of RICHMOND He appears in the Genealogy of the Page Family of Virginia as Dr. William Page (1753- ) of Richmond and is also shown on the records of William and Mary College as William Page. That his full name was William Byrd Page is definitely established by the fact that he is so recorded in the will of his father. He entered the Grammar School of William and Mary College April 19, 1763; graduated from the college March 25, 1771, and left immediately for Edinburgh, Scotland, to study medicine. It is not known how long he remained at Edinburgh or when he returned to Virginia, except that he did settle in Richmond and practice medicine there. He married, about 1777, a Miss Jones, presumably of Richmond. In addition to the children mentioned in the Genealogy of the Page Family of Virginia there appears to have been at least one, not mentioned, i. e., James Page, probably the eldest, born about 1778, who married, March 13, 1797, Frances Reynolds of Bedford county, Va. The record shows that both James Page and Frances Reynolds were under age at the time of their marriage as the parents of each had to give their consent to the union. James Page and his wife, Frances, first lived in Bedford county and removed, some time after 1808, to Botetourt county. Their known children were: (1) Joshua Page, born about 1805; (2) Cornelius Page, born January 13, 1808, and (3) Gideon Page, born about 1812." (actually 1814) "The above mentioned Cornelius Page removed to 'Coon Skin', Kanawha county" (now W. VA), "ca. 1827, and married Mary Newhouse of Newhouse Branch, Kanawha county. She was the daughter of James Newhouse who emigrated from Elk River, near Charleston. The small stream running past his home has since been known as 'Newhouse Branch'. She was buried in the family burying ground at Coon Skin. No. epitaph or marker now exists to indicate her grave. Cornelius Page, in the latter part of his life, removed to Charleston, West Va., where he resided with his elderly daughters, Elizabeth Jane and Mary Frances Page." pp. X74 and X75 of the above contain the records from the Family Bible of Cornelius Page (1808-1907) and his wife, Mary (Newhouse) Page (1813-1857). This Bible was owned by John Wesley Page in 1938. Comments by DCR on the above: To date, I haven't been able to find the proof that this James PAGE who md. Frances REYNOLDS and lived in Bedford and then Botetourt Cos., VA was the son of the William Byrd PAGE in J. W. Page's records. James' father may well be the William PAGE in the Bedford Co., VA Pers. Prop. Tax Lists first in 1795. If he was the Dr. William B. PAGE of Richmond City, VA, then he may have moved to Bedford Co. sometime between 1794-95 and remained in these lists only through 1806. In researching the Personal Property Tax Lists of Bedford Co., VA (which begin in 1782) from 1782-1840, I found the following: William PAGE there 1795-1802, 1804-1806 Thomas PAGE " 1797, 1801-1802, 1804-1839 (and possibly 1840) James PAGE " 1799-1820 John PAGE " 1801-1802, (1803 was very pale, so may have missed him), 1804-1807 William PAGE, Jr. probably listed with the older William in 1801-1802, listed by himself 1803-1806 These are probably the older William PAGE and the other four are his sons---all listed in Lynda's post as sons of that William PAGE and Elizabeth JONES. I found a William Byrd Page (no Dr. with his name) in the 1809-1810 Pers. Prop. Taxes of Petersburg Town (a separate list from the Dinwiddie Co., VA records, although it was in that county). Interestingly, there was also a Dr. Joseph JONES in those same lists----not before 1809 or after 1810. Do you suppose that this could be the William Byrd PAGE (and possibly the father of his wife, Elizabeth) of our search????? Now, all we have to prove is that this was, indeed, the same man as the William Byrd PAGE of Richmond City, VA. If we could just prove that the William PAGE in Bedford Co. was a "doctor", that would be the first step in the "proving process"....then we'd have to prove that his middle name was "Byrd" and then that he was in Richmond City, VA before going to Bedford Co. (and possibly Petersburg Town---across the river from Richmond). Pardon! There were two Joseph Jones, one a "Jr." in 1816, but no "Dr." after either name and I didn't check for them after that date. I've read the Henrico Co. Tax Lists 1782-1830, but there was no PAGE in them until 1811. These lists do not indicate whether or not the City of Richmond was included and I cannot get any separate readings for the "City" here in California. They must be in the VA State Archives and someone could do us PAGE researchers a great favor by checking on this (and possibly reading them) for us. Dolores
I'm trying to find information on GEORGE PAGE . He married MILDRED in 1817 and died in 1856. His son George B. PAGE (1-12-1833 [Perry County, Ohio]- 3-16-1872 [near Ladue, Missouri]) married Susan Jourdan 12-28-1854 in Breman, Ohio He served in and was wounded in the Civil War. According to his wife on her application for his pension, his death was related to his service-related injury. She later married an Isaac Drum[m]. Their children were Arminda Jane Page (Lewis M. Brandt), Margaret Ann Page, (Eli Miller,) Thaddeus Clement Page (Christy Neer), Bennet Martin Page (Emma Copeland) , Eliza Mildred Page (John Neer), and Samantha Eunice Page (David Miller.) After Geo. B.'s death, they returned to Ohio and, from what I know, all remained in central or south or west Ohio. George Page is my g g g g grandfather, and I have not been able to find out anything about him. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I live quite close to a FHC, but have drawn a blank on the usual resources. Sincerely, Vicki L. Shulman Mesa, Arizona (but an Ohioan for most of my life and forever in my heart.)
