    1. [PAGE-L] EXOL-HEATH Update
    2. Dolores C. Rutherford
    3. Hi, All, Because of my post earlier in this year on a theory of the possible origin of the first name EXOLHEATH, I want to bring you up to date on the recent findings on this theory. Due to the efforts of Charles E. Scott, Jr. of Louisville, KY and his cousin Barbara Matchett of Upper Marlboro, MD, we now have more information on the Axol(l)/Exoll/Echols family of King & Queen Co., VA. Many thanks the Matchetts and Charles for doing this for me and us. Charles built a fire under Barbara (his cousin) in MD to go to the VA State Archives and look up the chart on the early ECHOLS family of VA that I had wanted to obtain for quite a few years. We hoped that this chart might shed some light on that family that might help us to put to rest once and for all the idea that the first name of the Exolheath PAGE of Goochland Co., VA by the mid-1700's "may have" received his unusual first name from a combination of the name EXOL (ECHOLS was the closest to it found in King & Queen Co., VA) and HEATH. Last week, Barbara and her husband traveled to Richmond, VA and looked up the chart that I had so long wanted to see and had the first part of it copied. Now only did they get the chart, but they also returned by way of K. & Q. Co. and went into the courthouse there to get directions on where to find "Old Axol's Farm". As her luck would have it, the lady who owns the present-day farm was at the courthouse and she directed Barbara to the farm, swamp and the church that served the area. This chart, in conjunction of two previous writeups of this ECHOLS family, has tended to indicate to me that I was barking (actually "howling") up the wrong tree on this theory. Although the research on this ECHOLS (AXOL) family did not solve any problems for us, it did produce much information to help researchers on that family. I will not give the titles of these two writeups here; but will gladly give them to anyone interested by private E-Mail. For those not familiar with this "theory", there is evidence that the Goochland Co., VA PAGE families were in King & Queen Co., VA before moving to Goochland Co.. Because the earliest records of the latter county have been destroyed during the time period that is crucial to us, we've had to rely mainly on the Land Patent records of that county and it's parent county, New Kent. There was a John PAGE who obtained patents in the area of King & Queen Co. that were close to those of a John AXOL(L) for whom a swamp on his land was named. This is how the idea came to me of a "possible" origin of the first name EXOLHEATH (also spelled AXOLHEATH in some of the early Goochland Co. records). Then came the intense concentration on finding out more about this John AXOL(L) and the only person in that area of VA with a similar name was John ECHOLS. Now, on to the ECHOLS chart....made by Frank E. Bradley, Jr. of New York (no date given) as found and copied by Barbara. The earliest person shown on this chart was John ECHOLS, claimed to have been born ca. 1650 in England. He married a tall, redheaded woman called Mary CAVE. The chart lists eight children born to them---three daughters and five sons. None of the daughters are reported to have md. a PAGE. This chart does not state it, but one of the above write- ups mentioned gives the information that one son (Abraham who settled in Lunenburg Co., VA) had a dau. who md. James HODGES as her first husband. That's the only name on the chart or in either of these ECHOLS write-ups that rings a bell with families who could also be associated with our Goochland Co., VA PAGE families. It is apparent from this chart and both write-ups that this first John ECHOLS was the man who patented land on the swamp that bore his name. He was said to have died in Caroline Co., VA in 1712; but, since Caroline Co. was not created until 1728 from K. & Q. and K. Wm. Cos., that fact remains in question. The author of this information may have meant that he died in the part that went into Caroline Co. when it was created. If this is the same John ECHOLS of the Axol(l) Swamp area, he would have had to move farther west in K. & Q. Co. to be in the part of K & Q Co. that went into Caroline Co.. John Axol(l), the "swamp man", clearly lived in the central and eastern part of K. & Q. Co.. Although I haven't completely given up on an ECHOLS connection to our PAGE family (possibly before coming to this country), I now believe that we have the correct John ECHOLS of the Axol(l)'s Swamp area and I'm now convinced that this ECHOLS family was not connected (unless before coming to this country) to our Goochland Co., VA PAGE family....so I am putting that theory to rest. Much time and energy has been expended on this "possible" PAGE-ECHOLS connection and it has been an interesting and informative search. Sometimes one has to follow up a "hunch" when all else fails. However, I'm glad to finally be able to put it to rest and concentrate on another idea. Many thanks again to Barbara and her husband for their contribution in this "wild goose chase" of mine. Sometimes proving something false is almost as important as proving it true. Dolores

    3. Forgot... Before anyone starts questioning the "grandson" with last name PAGE being a product of his own daughters, it's almost unlikely. He only had two daughters, Harriet and Sarah Elizabeth. Harriet married John Cooper and they lived in Mississippi. Sarah did marry great-grandad Richard S. Page and they did have a son named John Richard Page born in 1866 and though people also called him Richard BUT being only 4 years old and a "bull with horns" was left to Richard then Richard's name is joined with Sarah like her sister and her husband later, I doubt it's the younger son. One wonders if Mary Page was living with them because possibly one of the Bennett boys was "playing around" next door and possibly had a son by this woman and Hardy Bennett took them in as his own, then maybe Mary is Richard's mother? And Hardy just called Richard his "grandson" because of "honor" Who knows? But the marriage would be TOO close unless.....?????? Of course they could be an "adopted" family as the case with orphans and impoverished families but still doesn't explain the "grandson" wording connected to Richard! Steven (Czar) Page

    3. You know how you pass over pages of archived information over and over to get to something else you are looking for and all of the sudden, when you least expect it, something "pops out" from one of those ignored pieces of paper that you really never noticed before! But this new "find" only adds to an already complex puzzle :-( Sampson County, North Carolina Wills 1784-1900, page 8 entry for Hardy BENNETT 31 Jan 1870, probate 22 Feb 1870 shows his daughter Sarah E. Bennett also shows a Mary PAGE (relation not given). But he lists Richard Page as his "grandson"! Then lists later Sarah and Richard together. Was this a mistake for that would mean that his grandson married his daughter (nephew married aunt)????? And who is this Mary Page? Sampson County, NC 1850 census shows a Sarah Page (age 28) living with Sarah Bennett's family. There was also a Mary Page (age 38) married to a John Page elsewhere not too far away. In 1860 Sarah Page (age 40) was living with another neighboring family to the Bennett's (3 doors down - house 419) along with a COOPER (age 5) in the same household. One of Sarah's sisters married a Cooper and her mother (Hardy's wife) maiden name was Cooper. At house 422 there was an Eady PAGE (female age 60) with a Mary Page (age 35) and 5 more children ranging in ages 17-27. At house 428 lives Hardy Bennett. Since there is a "Mary" Page showing up in his will of 1870 and there is a Mary Page living almost next door in 1860, wonder if the two are the same and related to my Richard Page who we are still trying to establish his parents? Another "strange" coincidence is that a brother (as in Rev.) Jonathan "S." Stewart was executor of the will and Rev. Jonathan "L." Stewart was the best friend and neighbor to Richard S. Page for 40+ years. This puzzle is getting worse instead of better! Steven R. Page Got a business? Got a hobby? Need a WEB PAGE Designed or maintained? 3. Thanks everyone for all your various inputs to my puzzle. I have gotten responses ranging from Wars Economics The Great Depression Religion Family Obligation Womanizing Physical Unattractiveness Being Plain Cheap It runs the gambit but the fact is that 2 of the brothers were for sure never married and didn't live in the same town as their parents. In fact, they died 6 months apart and are buried under a common headstone. 2 more move completely out of NC state and it appears they too never married. One, my grandfather, married when he was 58 years old for the first time to a 15 year old child, my grandmother. Six years earlier he was living with his married sister in town - not on the farm for their father had died some 8 years earlier. And one we can't be sure one way or another but assume he too never married. It's not because they are ugly and not that they had to stay home to tend the farm for they had their own lives in other areas. These 6 "unmarried" brothers were born around the 1860's and moved away in the 1880-1890's. Thanks for your inputs! Steven (Czar) Page Steven Page Got a business? Got a hobby? Boy you have more information than I have.... Thanks. We too descend from John and Faith (Dunster) Page and would be interested in more information on the South Carolina and Georgia connection. As I understand it he had families in both places. Also I'm interested in your line. Ours is: John Page - Faith Dunster Jonathan Page - Mary Hagar (your Samuel's brother) Joseph Page - Abigail Shedd - Groton, Massachusetts Jonathan Page - Esther Willard " Sewell Page - Rebecca Sheldon - Fitchburg, Massachusetts Sewell W Page - Nancy A Jenkins - Stoddard, New Hampshire Willard A Page - Abilene E Conant - Nelson, New Hampshire Emily G Page Brad Potts bpotts@compuserve for some reason this list seems to eat up the 'at' symbol and then adds extra letters, so I'll spell out my email address bpotts at compuserve dot com.

    1. [PAGE-L] Family Puzzle - no marriages?
    2. Steven R Page
    3. I have been puzzled for some time with the "lack" of marriages with my great-uncles. A majority of them on my father's side did not marry or married late in life. Has anyone else ran across this phenomenon during this time frame (18880's-1940's) ? They came from NC. Out of 8 brothers so far we have: 2 that we know never married 1 we possibly know never married (death certificate says single) 1 who married the first time when 53 years old 1 we know nothing about but possibly could also have never married 1 died too young to marry That leaves two we know did marry. ( but not to say "when" they married) I can understand that possibly one or two may not have married due to either physical problems or sexual preferences but a majority of them?? A puzzle! 1. [PAGE-L] Re: Lucinda Page
    2. A very helpful researcher just found the marriage of my great grandparents, Lucinda Page and John William Henry Gilton, which took place on May 10, 1857 in Old Tishomingo County, MS. The same researcher also found them in the 1860 census of the same county, with Lucinda's birthplace given as Tennessee. This couple subsequently moved to McNairy County, TN where they had two daughters in 1862 and 1864. It appears that Lucinda died shortly after the birth of the second daughter. Would anyone know who Lucinda Page's parents were and where in Tennessee she was born? Any help will be appreciated. E. J. Wilson osprey7@aol.com

    1. [PAGE-L] PAGE surname in SC help...
    2. Steven R Page
    3. Need South Carolina (Charleston County area) Obit lookup..please. I have just received the most wonderful news from a kind researcher in SC, who spent hours digging up my great-uncle (excuse the pun) :-) C.Owen PAGE (also known as Columbus Owen and nicknamed Odie) born 1868/69 in Clinton, NC died in Summerville (Charleston Co), SC on September 23, 1942 and was buried at Mt. Zion Baptist church in Summerville. He was a resident of McClellanville, SC. It took years to find this relative and now that he is found, would like to know more about him. Can someone who has access to this local newspaper find the Obit for him and see if he was married and who his children were - and any other histories? The death certificate has erroneous info concerning his parents and possible wrong birth date. They list his father as his brother John R. Page! And the person reporting didn't know his mother's name. FYI... father was Richard S. PAGE (1832-1912) of Clinton, NC and mother Sarah Elizabeth BENNETT (1834-1908) also of Clinton. Does anyone recognize my C. Owen PAGE? Steven Page Got a business? Got a hobby? Need a WEB PAGE Designed or maintained?
