    1. Re: [PAGE-L] Re: Early PAGE Families & Convict listings
    2. Hi Robert. So sorry...I sorta knew I might get in trouble by posting that information....which is all I had. I was just interested in finding if any one else knew about some of those Pages. It's an avenue I intend to follow but haven't.....yet. 1. [PAGE-L] Orange Co., VA - P.P. Taxes
    2. Dolores C. Rutherford
    3. Here are the readings of the Orange Co., VA Personal Property Tax Lists, 1782-1822. KEY: 1st number is White Male Tithables Please remember this: From 1782-1786 the males above 21 were taxed. From 1787, there were two categories of males: White males over 21 White males age 16-21 (meaning that they hadn't reached 21 as yet) 1805 onward - the above two categories were combined as "White Males over 16" All will appear here in the first column without separation. Be sure to take the above into consideration when reading these lists. 2nd number is slaves Some years they are separated into two categories: Slaves 12-16 Slaves above 16 For purposes of brevity, I will list them all under the 2nd number here. When the names of the slaves are given after the name of the person charged with the tax, they will appear as first names only as very few slaves had last names at this time and their names were not always shown. 3rd number is "Horses, Mare, Mules, Etc." 4th number is "Cattle" when given. If a category is not listed below, it was not given that year. An example is the one for "Cattle" which was only given from 1782-1787. There was another column "Total Tithables" that I am not including here, but have reference to in a couple of entries. These usually add up to the total of the "White Males" and "Slaves" categories. The names at the far right of each person's listing are the names of the processioners in whose district the taxable person lived. If given in the original lists, the date the person's property was listed is also given here. Although the Personal Property Tax Lists, 1797-1807, were negative for PAGE, the Land Tax Lists of 1800 show: "A" List Edward Page "B" List John Page estate John Page This could mean that these people owned land in Orange Co., but did not reside there. Otherwise their names would have shown up on the Personal Property Tax Lists. Perhaps they were in the other list that I did not check during this time period....I only check Cowherd's list past 1796. Maybe someone else closer to the source would do that for us. The 1810 and 1820 Censuses of Orange Co. were negative for PAGE. So much for now.... Dolores

    1. [PAGE-L] PAGE - Orange Co. Repost
    2. Dolores C. Rutherford
    3. NOTE: I have just seen my post of the following information on the PAGE-L and see some changes that I'd like to make in it. They are small, but important ones. Therefore, I am reposting this with the changes made herewith. The main difference is the elimination of the word "English" when the money is mentioned. I am not sure whether these were English Lbs. or Virginia money. Also, I try to line things up nicely; but, somehow they don't come through that way. Sorry, but I don't know how to do it correctly although I use my tab key to try to do so. Please toss the last message and save this one. Thanks! * * * * * Dan, Glad you brought the Orange Co. PAGEs up. For you and those also interested in this family...here's what I have in my files.... NOTE: In the deeds below, the money given in Lbs. was usually "money of Virginia", but I did not copy in all cases whether it was English Lbs. or Virginia Lbs.. In the earliest years, it may have been in English Lbs., but, later it was in "Virginia money". May 1746 - JOHN PAGE was imported to Orange co. in May of 1746 from Great Britain. ("List of Importations to Orange Co., VA" from "Orange Co., Virginia Families", Vol. II by William Everett Brockman, 1957) 20 Aug 1748 - Henry Rice receives a patent for 230 acres of land in Orange Co. for the importation of 5 persons: William Buntine, JOHN PAGE, Edward JENNINGS, John Forrester and Abel Gibson. The land lay on branches of the Pamunkey River bounded by Edward Broadus lines, George Hardin's line, John Smith's lines and the Road. (VA Land Patent Bk. 26, p. 566-567 and the "Magazine of Virginia Genealogy", Vol. 29, No. 1, p. 43, February, 1991 issue) Nov 1749 - JOHN PAGE in the List of Phillip Bush, Constable with 5 tithes (Ibid., p. 140) (the "tithables" for the years 1736-37, 1739, 1752-55, 1758 also given in this book are negative for the name PAGE, but some lists may be missing and this does not mean that there were no PAGEs in the county during these years Nov 1758 - James Beasley & wf. NOTE: I have subsequent deeds from Elijah PAGE and his mother, Elizabeth and the others of this family; but, since we are just discussing JOHN PAGE here I will not give them here. Sep 1789 Will of JOHN PAGE of Orange Co.. Signed: 12 Sep 1789 (notes in parentheses by me) Probated: 26 Oct 1789 Names: Wife: Elizabeth Son: John PAGE (md. Mary Collins in 1783) John PAGE was listed in the taxes of Orange Co. 1783-4, 1787, 1789, but the lists are incomplete for some years. He migrated to Madison Co., KY by 1796 and then on to Howard Co., MO before 1830. 5 youngest children: Mary Furnis (she md. Jacob Furniss in 1782) James PAGE (md. Winny Shiflett in 1789) William PAGE (md. Elizabeth Alexander in 1793) William is listed in the taxes in Orange Co. sporadically from 1784-1796 only) Elijah PAGE (md. Nelly Sisk in 1800) Elijah is listed in the Orange Co. taxes from 1794-1796 only. Betsey PAGE Ann PAGE (may have been the Nancy for whom Elijah PAGE joined with John Chiles Executors: wife and son, James Wits.: John McMullan JOHN PAGE (by mk. "X") Lewis Stowers (mk.) James Self (Orange Co., VA Wills Bk. 3, p. 200-201) This John PAGE of the will was obviously married twice, both times to Elizabeths. The maiden name of his 1st wife is not known to me at this time, but he md. 2) Elizabeth MIDDLEBROOK on 7 Dec 1777. Some of the above children were no doubt by the 2nd marriage. John must have done well in this country because, within twelve years of his arrival, he began purchasing land. According to the land that he left his children in his will, he died owning land that eventually lay in Orange, Augusta, Rockingham and possibly Albemarle counties. I haven't charted all his land out as yet. Perhaps someone else has done so. I believe that there were only two JOHN PAGEs in Orange Co. at this time despite what the tax records say....John Sr. and John Jr. One may have been repeated twice....but then, the readings are different for all three listed????? Questions, Questions, Questions!!!! The sons of the JOHN PAGE in the above deed records all disappeared from the Orange Co. records after 1796. Later, in the 1830's, Mann A. PAGE of the "Prominent PAGE Families" began showing up in the deed records. There was a Robert POAGE in the records of this county, but he was clearly not a PAGE. He obviously lived in the portion of the county that fell into Augusta Co. in 1745 as his land purchased in 1740 in Orange Co. was deeded to him by William Beverley who obtained large patents of land, some of which later fell into Augusta Co.. I too have pondered over the occurence of so many familiar names in the Orange Co. records----BROCKMAN, PATTY, COLLINS, CAMPBELL, CAWTHORN, HUMPHREYS, EDDENS/EDDINS and WEATHERSPOON to name a few. Sorry that this is so long, but I didn't want to separate it. Anyone have any more ideas on this family? Dolores

John and Virginia had the following: Emppie Harrington Page (1903-1966) Joseph R. Page (c. 1906-?) Sarah B. Page (1909-1995?) Hampton B. Page (1909-1971) - twin to Sarah. Hampton died in Summerville, SC, Emppie at State Park, SC and Sarah may have lived in TN and died in FL? The parents lived in Sumter and Dorchester Counties of SC. I have seen Emppie's name spelled as Enippe and Ennipie and Emppie is in the SSDI index. 1910 census shows John married to Virginia, 1920 shows Florence. Does anyone recognize these PAGE's from SC? 3. JUPEP@aol.com posted to the Page-l list on 4 Nov 98 various heads of families in Orange Co. VA in 1782. I'd appreciate some clarification. It appears from the posting that there might have been as many as 3 different John PAGEs, with the 3 households enumerated as: 1: white 10, black 3 2: 5 1 1 3: 7 1 2 Also, the posting showed a John PAGE Junr: White 3, black 1 I'm curious about these John PAGEs mostly because John BROCKMAN d in Orange Co. 1756. It's commonly accepted that his son Joseph BROCKMAN md 1773 Goochland Co. Mary PAGE d.o. Exolheath PAGE, and his daughter Rachel BROCKMAN md 1773 Goochland CO. Robert PAGE who was prob s.o. Exolheath PAGE. I'm curious about if or how those John PAGEs in Orange Co. were connected to the PAGEs in Goochland Co. Anyone care to clarify, comment, or conjecture?? I have nothing whatever re Orange Co. Dan Page dpage@ipa.net Dan Page dpage@ipa.net

There were some names on them and so I decided that we had better do something about seeing if we could find the descendants of these people rather than sell the photos on to a stranger (or passing dealer). Many of the photos are from studios in Dewsbury, others are from Halifax, Wakefield, Barnsley, Leeds, Bradford, Stowmarket & Newcastle (Staffs), There are also two from Blenheim, New Zealand and two from Philadelphia. There are three copies of the same photo of small boy from Illingworth's studio in St. Stephens Road, Bradford. On the back of one is written in ink - 'Boy Rockett, 33, Vulcan Road, Dewsbury'. There is one photo with no studio name on it but on the back in ink is written 'Elijah Burrows'. The 2 photos from Philadephia are from different studios. One of a middle-aged man with a grey beard is from the studio of Sawyer, 159, N. 8th St., Philadelphia. The other is of a woman and is from the studio of Louis Greenig, 1800-1802, N. Front St., Philadelphia, Pa. On the back of this photo is written in ink 'Mrs. H. Rocketts'. There is another photo of a woman with no markings identifying a studio and on the margin is printed in purple as if with a home printing set 'George W. Rockett'. I looked up Rockett in the 1881 indexed census for Dewsbury and found the family of George Rockett, a master tailor born in Brotherton, his wife Ann and children Joseph, Eliza Ann, George Henry and Ernest (all born in Dewsbury). Can anyone shed any light on these people - or claim the photos as their own?! Please would list members who subscribe to other lists pass this message on so that the word can be spread - particularly in the U.S. - so that as many people as possible read about this collection of photos. 3. In the 1860 census of La Crosse Co, WI, at Onalaska taken 6 Aug 1860, #2001-1713: Christopher Page 68/65 [I couldn't read the age well] born NY Sarah 60 b NY [so born @ 1800] Sarah 18 NY Moses 16 NY Christopher [Marshall] 10 WI Rosella 6 WI Frances 3 WI The age for Christopher means he was born 1772-1775 in New York. The ages and information for the children indicate that Christopher and Sarah with their children Sarah and Moses were in New York until @ 1844, but they were in WI by November 1849, when Christopher Marshall was born. Christopher Marshall's marriage registration indicates he was born in Sheboygan, but found no Page in Sheboygan Co. WI around that time. The 1870 census for Farmington, La Crosse Co, WI gives (#104-110) the household of Wood, Cerlemow 60 Sophia 54 Lewis, Emanuel 10 Neill, Mortimer 16 PAGE, Moses 27 b VT Emily 17 b WI. This Moses Page is the right age to be the brother of Christopher Marshall Page listed above, although a difference in state born. The parents, Christopher and Sarah Page are not found in La Crosse Co in that census. Later, Christopher Marshall Page marries Ella Irene TYLER and, after living some time with her widowed mother, they move to the Rice Lake, WI area where they have two children: Vida and Raymond Wayne Page. Moses and Emily are found also near Rice Lake in the later years. I have been unable to find any reference to Christopher PAGE and Sarah in New York, although they would have been old enough to have been listed in census from about 1820-1840. I have not found a death date or place for Christopher, Sr. or Sarah. Can anyone help?

In several instances, however, I suggest that you review your sources. I believe that there may be some questionable relationships included. Just thought that you'd like to know. I'm mainly interested to know how you determined that the John PAGE and John PAGE who paid Quit Rents in 1704 in K & Q Co. and New Kent Co. were the same man and the son of the first marriage of Lawyer John PAGE who md. 1) Elizabeth PAGE, dau. of Francis PAGE and 2) Mann (MANN) PAGE, widow of Matthew PAGE. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hi Dolores: Thanks for your response. I'm posting your email so that others can consider your remarks also. These are not Pages that are connected to my direct line, and as I said in my first posting....but I should have added a caveat on each posting, sorry....this is just some material that I found at the Salt Lake City Mormon library that I thought might have been of interest to others. It is early research and does not have the benefit of later findings including all of the detailed work you have done on the Virginia Pages....however, it does reflect early thinking about these families and should be considered just that....a starting point to be considered or rejected. I'm sorry to say I don't know anything more about the sources than what I have posted...but there was just the general history of the region that I myself found of interest. [the sources cited come from Richard Channing Moore Page, author of the Genealogy of the Page family in VA who suggested in 1883 that John was the son of Thomas Page, of sudbury, in the Parish of Harrow County, Middlesex. Later, Charles Nash Page, author of the Page Family History and Genealogy from 1257, published in 1911, presented evidence that this was an error. Also cited is the History of the Colony and Ancient Dominion of Virgina written by Charles Campbell in 1860.] With that in mind, here are the rest of the sketches that I found....and some listing of convict transports.... William Page and Thomas lived in Isle of Wight county during the seventeenth century. Several earl Virginia tax records reveal that these two families were Quakers. Francis Page b 1593, half brother to John (first Page in America) and brother to Sir Richard Page (Nathaniel Paige's father) lived in Bedfont, Middlesex in England where he had seven children: robert, Matthew, Joh, Frincis, Gibbs, Ince, and Elizabeth. The tomb of Francis Page (d.1678) is located at the old Parish Church, Bedfont, Middlesex. Three of his sons emigrated to the British Colony of Virginia in the early seventeenth century and were wealth landowners there. Matthew Page, son of Francis, after taking the oath of allegiance and an examination according to the discipline of the Church of England, was granted permission to debark on the "Ann and Elizabeth" bound for Barbados. He arrived in VA in 1635 and lived there for several years before returning to his English homeland; he died there in Bedmont, Middlesex before the year 1683. Col John Page (b. 1627), second son of Francis, married alice Luckin of Essex about 1656 and emigrated to VA in 1650. John Page's sons, Francis and Matthew, continued to carry the status and wealth of their father. Decendants of this "Page" family of Virginia are numerous and well documented. Mann Page b 1691, only surviving grandson of Col John Page, married Judith wormley in 1712; they had three children: Ralph Wormley b. 1713, Maria b 1715, and Mann b. 1716. Both mother and infant died. Mann Page married W2 Judith Carter in 1717. They had six children: Mann b. 1718, John b. 1720, Robert b. 1723, Carter b. 1724, Matthew b. 1726, and a daughter b. 1728 that is said to have died in infancy. Mann was not listed on the "British Rent Rolls" published in 1704; however, he was heir to the large estate of his father. Mann served on the Council of VA from 1714-1726. He was appointed that year as Glouchester County Lieutenant and assumed an additional appointment to the VA Council of Judges in 1729. Mann Page died 20 Jan 1730 in Williamsburg, VA, when he was 39. Now here's some more history and another side of the story......about convicts transported from England--food for thought for me since my Page family that ended up in California in 1853 [from Roxbury MA] turned out a couple of irrascables....... "Many injustices were inflicted by the British Parliament upon their new colony in America. One of the most flagrant of these was the practice of dumping common criminals upon these shores. About 30,000 total convicted criminals were transported to VA or MD during the 17th and 18th centuries. These were mostly felons; however, only those who were considered unfit for English society were shipped to this country. Many of the females were prostitutes who had been convicted of more than one felony. "Most of these undesirable convicts were sold or traded away as indentured servants. They were required to work for their masters without any compensation for an agreed period of time (usually 7 years) before they acquired their freedom. "It is likely that many of these 30,000 undesirables changed their names sometime after their release in this country. It is also more likely that those convicted criminals of the same family name were related. For example, in June 1738, John and Mark Page were transported together on HMS "Forward" Margaret Page was also shipped to VA on HMS "Forward"; and William Page followed to that destination less than a year later (on that ship's following trip over). Twenty-three convicts named Page were transported from Middlesex England to America during the years 1615-1775. Richard Jun 1663; Edward Feb 1672; John Jul 1686, Richard Feb 1693; Richard (alias Jenkins) to VA Dec 1697; Grace Page on HMS Prince royal to VA Aug 1721; Margaret on HMS Forward to VA Nov 1728; william on HMS Forward to VA Oct 1729; Sarah to VA Mar 1741; Elizabeth on HMS Caesar to VA Oct 1732; John on HMS Forward to VA Jun 1738; Mark on Hms Forward to VA Jun 1738; Ann Page (allias Mary Willis dec 1747; Judith Dec 1750; John May 1754; John on HMS Lyon to MD Jun 1756; Mary on HMS Prince William to VA Nov 1762; Samuel apr 1765; Sarah Page to MD Jul 1770; John on HMS Gilbert to MD Jan 1772; Thomas on HMS Taylon Jul 1772; Henry Jul 1773; and thomas on HMS Justitia May 1774. That's it folks.....

    1. [PAGE-L] Early Page families
    2. Hi. In response to several requests, I give you the following thumbnail sketches for your reading enjoyment. Connie Captain Francis Page b. 1657, oldest son of Colonel John Page, married Marry Diggs in Williamsburg, VA, about 1682; they had no sons. Francis died at age 35, in 1692, about three months following the death of his father; his only daughter, Elizabeth, was then 9 years old. Later, Elizabeth married Gent John Page, son of Robert Page. Madam Mary Page, was the widow of Captain Francis Page; her mother, Elizabeth (Page) Diggs, was a sister of Colonel John Page. Madam Mary lived on her estate in "Abbington Parish", which included 3,000 acres located in Glouchester county; another 550 acre estate in Glouchester county; 3,450 acres in New Kent conty; and 900 acres in James City county. She died 10 May 1703 at Williamsburg, VA Colonel Matthew Page b 1659, son of Col. John Page, married Mary Mann about 1689 in Williamsburg, VA. They had 4 children: Elizabeth, Mann, Mary, and Matthew. However, Matthew b 1702 died in infancy leaving only Mann to continue this Page name. He was on the Council of VA in 22 Jul 1693. He was listed that same year as one of the "Gents, Presidents and Masters", at the College of William and Mary. Matthew Page was appointed as "Commander in Chief" of Glouchester county in 1699 and he received the additional appointment to the "Elizabeth City Court of Admiralty" on 13 May 1700. Matthew's personal estate exceeded 300,000 acres. Matthew was one of the wealthiest men in the Colony when he died at age 43 on 9 Jan 1703. Major (Gent) John Page, single son of Robert Page (Robert was Colonel John Page;s brother) emigrated from Bedford Parish and was later appointed to the "York County quorum" in 1699. British land records, during this period, reveal that he was in possession of land in York county, King and Queen county and James City county. Major John Page married his cousin Elizabeth (daughter of Madam Mary Page) in 1702. Elizabeth died that same year at age 19. After Elizabeth's death he married Mrs. Mary (Mann) Page, widow of Colonel Mattew Page, after the Colonel died in 1703. They moved to England. Robert Page, brother of Colonel John Page, resided on his 175 acre Grand Estate at Abbington Parish in Glouchester county. Robert maintained a resident estate at Hatton, Bedford Parish in England. He died aft 1686. Henry Page, son of Robert Page, forfeited his estate on 16 July 1677; his mother, Margaret Page (bondsperson) was required to pay the delinquent taxes. She gained possession of Henry's seized property. Susanna Page, daughter of Robert Page, was granted a land title upon an Indian lease, which included 1,000 acres, in June 1699. she also had a recorded land patent of 1,419 acres in King and Quen county during October 1701. Richard Page was in possession of 150 acres adjoining the estate of Major (Gent) John Page in York county. It appears that this is the Richard who was heir to the "Great Page Estate" in Middlesex England. Richard Page was also the brother of Nathanial Page(b. 1645 who changed the spelling of his name to Paige; and he was a younger cousin to Colonel John Page. John Page Jr had 300 acres in King and Quen county and 400 acres in New Kent county. This appears to be the son of John Page (b. 1627) who was transported to the Colony of VA 4 July 1635. Colonel Thomas Page, of Old Rappahannock, made his will 10 March 1676. His heirs included a son, Valentine Allen, who only received a small part of the land where he lived. his daughter, Mary Allen and grandson, Samuel Allen received large grants. Elizabeth West, Mary Noell, and the children of William Hodge received large shares of Thomas' land. This Thomas and his only son, Valentine Allen appear to have no known"Page" decscendants. more later.....connie

    1. [PAGE-L] Hints for searching the father
    2. I Found this on another list and thought it might be of some help. I'm always open to suggestions from others. Happy Hunting. Connie Finding Fathers. You need to check for: Earliest Proven Residence Ancestral Land Records State Land-Federal Records Important notes..... Men were USUALLY in a area at least eight years before buying land or receiving land thru Warrant Deeds. When the English first came to America, they never settled over 50 miles from the SEA. It was many years later, at least a generation or two that they settled in the central sections of the State. When you find an ancestor has migrated to another state...for example....living in N.C. or VA, but born in Maryland, check those wills and deeds in the state that he formerly lived. His Father may have recently died, the reason for the migration. Sample Types of Land Grant Records Petitions Warrants Survey Surveyor's Notes Military Land Records are Federal Records ALWAYS....Identify the chain carriers on deeds, these are important...they are usually sons, brothers, neighbors, or even the neighbors children The War of 1812 ended in 1815 Most land given for Service in Illinois, Indiana, and Arkansas Tract Book...which is Land Office Records Note the co-signers of deeds, usually a close relative Look at all neighbors living around your ancestor in Census Records. If at all possible, look at the original Census Book in the Archives, microfilm has left many of the residents out. Most true in Wake and Orange Co. N.C. Look at original Wills and Deeds when possible, many of them have been abstracted incorrectly. Check Tax Rolls Look at... Court Records Divorce Records When you see reference to a "best friend" in a will, this means father, brother, uncle, son-in-law, or close relative. Bastardy Bonds..men that sign these are "Kin", or the father of the child. Apprentice Bonds...children are USUALLY bound out to the father's side of the family, always true if this child was born out of wedlock Note... Merchants Day Books These prove that a man lived in this area, or very close by. Other Types of Deeds State Land Warranty Deeds.... unconditional relationship Quitclaim Deeds...not sole owner Dower Releases...1/3 interest of land for women Deeds by Lease and Release Deeds of Gift Sheriff or Tax Deeds Always look at Deed Books for other Deeds that were registered the same day. This will take at least twelve pages before and after your ancestors' Deed. Always note those surnames on same day Deeds, these may be relatives. More Land Records....
