    3. Family tradition says that my ggrandfather, JAMES WATSON PAGE, was one of 3 brothers who ran away from home in England and came to New York (around 1860?), married Polly (and later Clarissa) JEFFERS, went from Rose, New York, to Wild Rose, Wisconsin. Do these names mean anything to any of you PAGE researchers? Carolyn

As a point of fact, the revolution had about as much public support as the so-called public opinion polls indicate the American public believe Clinton should be removed from office (30-40%). If they had then depended upon polls, the patriots wouldn't have participated in, much less won, that war! Over the years I have seen several references to a Lieutenant Page, who served as an aide-de-camp to British General Howe during the Battle of Bunker Hill. Lt. Page was instrumental in developing the "Plan of Action" based upon a land survey done by Captain Montresor, who subsequently became an aide-de-camp to General Howe. I have posted a series of messages of Abstracts of Rev. War Pension Files for Page & Paige names that I found in a book, Genealogical Abstracts of Rev. War Pension Files, Vol. III (N-Z) (pp. 2568-2571), Abstracted by Virgil D. White, The National Historical Publishing Co., Waynesboro, TN, 1992. There were many Page named patriots who were listed in alphabetical order. I have a book with about 100 individuals with the last name of Page who served in the Rev. War from the American Colonies. There is only one Page entry in a book about American Loyalist Claims [Peter Wilson Coldham, "American Loyalist Claims" (Washington, D.C.: National Genealogical Society, 1980) pp. 376-7] and it is as follows: "William Byrd Page, Va. son of John Page, deceased, late of Council of Va. Some years before war, was sent to Scotland to study physick at Edinburgh University; when his allowances failed at beginning of the war, was obliged to enlist in 80th Regt., then serving in America, as Pvt. Regt. has now been reduced and needs money to return to relatives. Evidence: Letter 23 Feb. 1779 Cannongate Gaol from claimant to Lord Dunmore that he had been in goal more than three months and asks for help to join Army or Navy. (A013/32/221-228)." Very interesting in that this same Dr. William Byrd Page appears in a message from Dolores C. Rutherford: From: "Dolores C. J. W. Page was a descendant of James PAGE and Frances REYNOLDS of Bedford Co., VA and did extensive research to find James' parentage. Here is what he wrote on that: X 73-75: (reference for the following in these papers) "DR. WILLIAM BYRD PAGE (1751- ) of RICHMOND He appears in the Genealogy of the Page Family of Virginia as Dr. William Page (1753- ) of Richmond and is also shown on the records of William and Mary College as William Page. That his full name was William Byrd Page is definitely established by the fact that he is so recorded in the will of his father. He entered the Grammar School of William and Mary College April 19, 1763; graduated from the college March 25, 1771, and left immediately for Edinburgh, Scotland, to study medicine. It is not known how long he remained at Edinburgh or when he returned to Virginia, except that he did settle in Richmond and practice medicine there. He married, about 1777, a Miss Jones, presumably of Richmond. (snip) According to RCM Page ["Genealogy of the Page Family in Virginia," pp. 96-100] William Byrd Page was b. at North End (North River, Gloucester --- now Matthews Co.), VA, about 1753 the son of the Hon. John Page (the second son of Mann Page and Judith Carter) and Jane Byrd the daughter of Col. William E. Byrd of Westover, on James River. Charles City Co., VA and Maria Taylor of Kensington, England, his second wife. John Page was a Governor of Virginia and close friend of Thomas Jefferson). Col. William Byrd and his second wife are the ancestors of the famous Byrd families of Virginia and West Virginia. Dr. William Byrd Page removed to Richmond, VA. He m. about 1778, Miss Jones. GWP

    3. Re Steven Page's periodic posts requesting info on Pages in NC. I probably started a small flurry of interest in NC Pages about 15 months ago when I posted a distant cousin's work linking one NC Page family to the famous Colonel John Page of 17th century VA. The work of Dolores Rutherford and others pretty well demolished this link. I wrote to my cousin (he does not own a computer) and requested further info, and what he sent me supported Mrs. Rutherford's work! Steve, my family's Page roots are in the Duplin Co/Warsaw area and Goochland Co VA and hit a stonewall at Exolheath Page in the latter. From what I know about my NC Pages, I do not see any connection with your family. John Page, Lacey, WA

    2. My Page was a native american slave (of owners in Plymouth MA), who was offered his freedom in exchange for assisting in the capture of general prescott. They wanted him, I suspect, because of his scouting abilities. when they arrived, the door (very large wooden) was locked. Barton was about to turn away when Prince said he would get them in. He backed up and used his head as a battering ram and busted through the door. He walked the general back to an awaiting american ship. Colonel Barton was awarded a sword from General Washington, some money, and a tract of land in Boston. There is even a Fort Barton in RI. My Page was given his freedom and lived out the rest of his days in poverty..... 2. This may be of no help at all, but you never know. There were several Page families in the 1850 census of Spartanburg County, SC . According to the Unity Baptist Church records several of these were members. The church records show members (not Pages) asking the church to hold their membership letters until a church could be established in Florida at which time they planned to transfer their membership. Since groups tended to go places together it is possible some of the Pages went also since two Page families moved their letters to an unspecified place about the same time. If I can help anyone with information from Spartanburg, SC or surrounding area, let me know. 3. Hi- This seems relevant to the recent discussion: The Governors of Maryland, Frank F. White Jr., 1970, Twentieth Century Printing, Baltimore. p. 165, Thomas SWANN 1866-1869 : Thomas SWANN, a railroad executive whose political career encompassed three radically different political parties, was born in Alexandria, Virginia, in 1805 or 1806. He would never tell the exact date of his birth, but a close relative asserted that at the time of his death, he was seventy-seven years of age. His father, also named Thomas SWANN, was a prominent lawyer who had practiced in Washington, where he had filled the office of United States Attorney for the District of Columbia. His mother, who before her marriage had been Jane Byrd PAGE, was a member of one of the first families of Virginia. SWANN attended Columbian College's preparatory school in Washington and the University of Virginia, and following his graduation, he studied law in his father's office. When President Andrew Jackson appointed the United States Commission to Naples in 1833 to negotiated the settlement of Spoliation claims, Swann was chosen Secretary and served in this capacity until the Commission completed its work in the following year. In November 1834, SWANN married Elizabeth SHERLOCK, a granddaughter of Robert GILMOR of Baltimore. They had four daughters and one son. In 1878, when he was over seventy years old, Swann married Josephine THOMPSON, a sister of House Speaker Samuel RANDALL, but this second marriage did not last, ending in separation very shortly. p. 169 : After his long term had ended, he moved back to his home, "Morven," near Leesburg, Virginia. His health began to fail, and he died there on July 24, 1883. At his request, his body was returned to Baltimore, where, after funeral services at St. Paul's Protestant Episcopal Church, he was buried in Greenmount Cemetery. Chet Magno cmagno@drc.com

"I have a "suspicion" that he is Abednego's father. Montgomery Co. Md. is close to Frederick Co. Virginia and it makes good sense to name your first son after your father and your second son after the wife's father." "Other information on Jesse Page of Montgomery Co. Md. found is a "Jossey" (sic) Page is listed for that county in the lists of Oaths of Fidelity for Md. in 1778, and a birth record for a Rachel Page, daughter of Jesse and Mary Page born in 1791." "There is supposed to be a book at the library on Montgomery Co., Md. marriages that I couldn't find on the shelf." Thank you all for your answers to my questions. There has got to be someone out there working on these same lines. I had been reading everyones letters ever sence I joined the PAGE-L. It has been very interesting. Once I started writing in I found it to be so easy! Thank you PAGE-L. Sincerely, Eloise Page nvbear@tele-net.net

    1. [PAGE-L] Abednigo PAGE
    2. Dolores C. Rutherford
    3. Hi, Abednigo PAGE is not my line; but, as many of you know, I've been reading the personal property tax lists of most of the VA counties from 1782 onward, some as late as 1850....this in preparation to publishing my next book on the PAGE Family Abstracts in VA Counties. The following does not solve your ancestry of Abednigo PAGE, but perhaps it will give you some new information for further research. Abednigo PAGE appears in the Frederick Co., VA tax lists as Bednigo PAGE from 1818-1821. Most of the Frederick Co. PAGEs belong to the Col. John PAGE (immigrant) line and those appear in a different list from the one from the one where Abednigo appears. Abednigo and an Ann PAGE appear in the "other" list and are probably related (possibly mother and son???). Ann PAGE first appears in these lists in 1814 and continues to appear through 1819. The "other" list in this county first shows a William Byrd PAGE who appears to be pretty well "heeled" as he has a number of slaves and horses and a coachee when first listed in 1810. Wm. continues in this "other" list as the only one in it through 1813. In the latter year, his name is shown as: William B. PAGE heirs Then the lists show Ann PAGE as given above and then Bednigo PAGE in the years listed for him previously here. I haven't searched the probate records for Frederick Co., but perhaps there is a will or other probate record to list his heirs. If William B. and Ann prove to be the parents of Bednigo (Abednigo) PAGE, then it appears that they might also belong to the Col. John PAGE line. The name William Byrd PAGE was given to a number of descendants of Col. John PAGE in the line of the "Honorable" John PAGE of "North End", Gloucester Co., VA who md. Jane BYRD. There are others who are more informed on the Col. John PAGE line than I who might be able to help you on this. The "Maryland" birthplace could be O.K. for Abednigo/Bednigo PAGE if his father was the Will B. PAGE who was in the City of Alexandria in the 1800 Personal Property Tax List. I think that, at one time, Alexandria (being just across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C.) was considered part of the District of Columbia as late as 1840 and possibly later. Therefore, it might also thought to have been MD. I'm not sure about this; but, if it is true, that would explain why it was said that Abednigo was born in MD. Perhaps someone could clarify or correct me on this. An added bit of information....I also noticed the first name of CHARLES in your Benjamin PAGE's family. Although it is two generations down from Abednigo, it could have come down from the Charles PAGE (banker) who appears in Alexandria (census and tax records) from the early 1800's until the 1830 Census. If related to this PAGE line, I'm not sure of a possible connection to Col. John PAGE although there may be one. Dolores C. Rutherford in California

    3. According to transcripts of Census Records extracted and compiled by Dolores C. Rutherford in 1998, Abednigo Page was listed as the Head of a Household in Pugh Town, Frederick Co., VA, in the 1820 Census. His household consisted of himself and wife (both aged 16-26) plus one male under 10 years old with one person working in agriculture. No Page entries in Pugh Town, Frederick Co. in 1830 (Abednigo Page does NOT appear in the county), and no Page entries appear in Frederick Co. in 1850. It is important to remember that until 1850 ONLY the names of Heads of the Household were enumerated in the Federal Censuses that were taken every ten years starting from 1790. Each of the Federal Censuses has a different format for showing the numbers of males, females, slaves, others, etc. in each household. Even after 1850 when the ages and names of each member of the household were also enumerated ONLY the names of the Head of the Household appear in the Census Indexes. The person who had previously been listed in the 1830 Fed. Census Index as a Head of Household but not in the 1840 Fed. Census Index may have been still alive and living with a child, a friend, or in some institution; although the assumption that he died is a good starting point and good possibility of being proven to be true. The moral is that researchers who have family members that should, or could, appear in the Federal Census Enumerations starting in 1850 should examine the complete Federal Census Record that is available on Microfilm in the National Archives in Washington, D.C. and their various Branch Offices throughout the country. In many cases the local county libraries may have Federal Census record extracts of their own county available in their Local History/Genealogy section. Most of the Census info published on CD-ROM in Family Tree Maker's Family Archives series is unfortunately an Index and not a complete enumeration. In the case of their "Census Index: Selected Counties - 1840 and 1850" they do not even contain the family info as to the number of males and females by category in the household! George W. 1. [PAGE-L] Re: Address for Railroad Retirement Board
    2. Hi Donna....I had a feeling that you might be interested and so dug in my files for you. I am sending a copy of this information to some of the lists that I'm on in case others with relatives that worked for the railroad are not aware of this resource. connie The Board that I mentioned is the U.S. Railroad Retirement Board. It administers a Federal retirement benefit program covering the nation's railroad workers. The recrods it maintains deal primarily with the administration and payment of these benefits. The Board will provide information from its records on deceased persons for the purpose of genealogical research. The fee for the search is $16 and is payable before any search is attempted. It is not refundable, even if information is not located or if the file has been destroyed. Check should be made payable to the Railroad Retirement Board, and sent to Office of Public Affairs Railroad Retirement Board 844 North Rush Street Chicago, Illinois 60611-2092. The Board was not established until the mid-1930s and it began maintaining its records in 1937. The Board would not have any records of persons who died prior to its inception. Nor would it generally have any pertinent records of persons whose rail service was performed on a casual bais an/or was of short duration. The Board's records are kept by the railroad employee's social security number. In some cases, if that number is not available, having the employee's full name, including middle name or initial, and complete dates of birth and death may be of some help in determining whether there are any records. However, if the surname is relatively common, it is usually not possible to make a positive identification without the ss number. Even with those caveats, here was my experience. I did have his social security number. The records sent me covered his service with the Southern Pacific Company starting in 1906 (age 16) and it was indeed sparodic service over the years up to the time in 1957 when he and one of his former wives applied for benefits. It covered his service with the Southern Pacific Co, the Union Pacific RR, the Washington RR Navigation Company [all from 1906 to 1918] in states of California, Oregon, and Washington. It covered Northern Pacific Railroad work from 1936-1938 in Texas. It covered Southern Pacific from 1941-1952....only a few months at a time.....and in addition, there were names and dates of his three wives and notation about work that he did in Ohio which was not associated with the railroad from Aug 1956 to Aug 1957. I also provided them with the dates of his birth and death. I was happy with the information they sent, about 20-30 pages worth. Hope you have enough information to get some records from them. connie
