    1. [PAGE-L] Part #14

    3. Children of John PAGE (E-4) My reasons for placing this John as a son of Exolheath PAGE appear in Part 3 of this series. His birthdate was determined by the date that he first appeared in the Goochland Co., VA "Tithable Lists"---which was 1757---in the house- hold of Exolheath PAGE.(1) Because young men became "tithable" at age 16, John was probably b. ca. 1740-41, but WHERE has not been determined as yet. He continued to appear in these lists through 1761, the year of his marriage---appearing for several years as "John PAGE, son of Exol". On 31 Oct 1761 (after the "tithable list" was taken), John md. 1) Eadith/Edith CAUTHAN/CAUTHO(R)N. They were md. by the Rev. Wm. Douglas in Goochland Co..(2) Edith was the mother of all of his children. She was probably related to the James, John and Thomas CAUTHON who were also md. in Goochland Co. in the 1760's. There were families of this name in King William and Essex Cos. in the early 1700's. John continued to be taxed in Goochland Co., but did not own any land until 1785 when he purchased 50 acres from William WELDAY of Fluvanna Co. (formerly of Goochland Co.).(3) He continued to live on this land until his death in 1804. Edith died sometime before 30 Oct 1800 when John md. 2) Anna/Anner PACE, spinster dau. of John PACE and his wife Susanna HUTCHIN(G)S, in Goochland Co.. They were md. by Rev. Lewis CHAUDOIN.(4) There were no children by the second marriage. The PACE family had come to Goochland Co. from Middlesex Co., VA in the 1720's with the DANIELS, MOSELEYs, JOHNSONs, TUGGLEs, THURSTONs and others. Anna/Annah (PACE) PAGE's will was probated in 1824 in Goochland Co. and she left all of her estate to her nephews and nieces.(5) John signed his will on 10 Mar 1803 and it was probated on 17 Sep 1804 in Goochland Co..(6) He named his second wife and his children, leaving money to the children of his deceased son, Jesse PAGE. The appraisal of his estate was made on 31 Oct 1804. In addition to the 50 acres of land, he left personal property worth 219.8.0 English Pounds.(7) John PAGE and Edith CAUTHON had the following children: E-4-1 Leonard PAGE, b. 29 Sep 1762 in VA. On 18 Oct 1782, he md. Jenny, dau. of Johnson & Lucy (PAGE) HODGES (E-2? in these posts) in Goochland Co., VA.(8) Leonard served as a Private in the Rev. War under Capt. Richard WHITE from Aug 1778 until 1 Apr 1781. He served with the VA Guards who guarded the Convention Troop prisoners (English and German) who were taken by General GATES and sent to Albe- marle Co., VA. Col. TAYLOR was his immediate officer.(9) They took the prisoners from Albemarle Barracks in Charlottesville, VA to Winchester, VA and guarded them for two months. On Nov 1832, he was awarded a pension of $80 per annum for his service.(10) He was a farmer, shoemaker and Baptist minister. As an elder in the Lickinghole Baptist Church in Goochland Co., VA, he was active in the Revival of 1804 held there and later served as Pastor of that church until moving to Logan Co., KY with other PAGE relatives in 1811, taking his nephews Samuel Lemay PAGE and Pleasant PAGE (sons of his deceased brother Jesse PAGE) with him. There, he continued as a minister and organized several Baptist churches including the Union Baptist Church in Russellville of which he was the Pastor until 1821.(11) He died in Logan Co., KY on 28 Mar 1836 leaving a will naming his children.(12) Leonard and Jenny had ten children. Write-ups on this family have been done by at least two persons and perhaps more.(13) 1-4-2 Jesse PAGE Jesse was b. 2 May 1765 and bp'd 26 May 1765 in Gooch- land Co., VA.(14) He md. Molly, dau. of Samuel LEMAY, ca. 1786-87. Samuel LEMAY was first taxed in Goochland Co. in 1776 and his will was probated there in 1815. In his will, Samuel named his daughter Molly RYAN among his other children.(15) Jesse was dead at this time and Molly had md. Major RYAN. Jesse died intestate in Goochland Co., VA sometime before Feb 1793 when his father, John PAGE, and father- in-law, Samuel LEMAY, were issued Letters of Adminis- tration on his estate.(16) The inventory and appraisal of the estate was filed on 16 Dec 1793.(17) However, Samuel LEMAY entered two court cases against several persons from May 1795 until Oct 1799 to obtain money due the estate.(18) Jesse and Molly had three children, all sons. At the Feb 1805 court, the Overseers of the Poor of Goochland Co. bound out the sons of Jesse PAGE as follows: Pleasant PAGE to Leonard PAGE Samuel PAGE to David SAUNDERS Absalom PAGE - he was taxed with Major RYAN from 1806 to 1809 and then in 1810 and 1811 by himself.(19) Jesse PAGE's widow, Molly, md. 2) Major RYAN on 10 Jul 1798 in Goochland Co., VA.(20) Major and Molly joined the PAGE families in Logan Co., KY in 1816 or early 1817. 1816 is the last year that Major RYAN is shown in the tax lists. 3. Post #11 covered the family of Betty PAGE (md. John LEE) and Post #12 covered the family of Lucy PAGE (md. Johnson HODGES). Because the placement of these two women and Christian PAGE (md. Thomas WILBURN) are in question, I will continue with the latter in this post although this may not be their correct parentage. Some researchers believe that these three women belong in the family of Robert PAGE (R) rather than Exolheath PAGE (E). I am not completely convinced as to which one they belong myself; so, I present their families here and leave it up to each individual to decide for him/herself where they belong. Children of Christian PAGE & Thomas WILBURN (E-3?) Christian PAGE and Thomas WILBURN were md. on 22 Oct 1759 by the Rev. William DOUGLAS of Goochland Co., VA.(1) Thomas was probably the son of the Richard WILBURN of the 1755 "Tithable List" who had Thomas and Lewis WILBURN in his household. This Richard WILBURN died sometime before Feb 1769 when John and William WILBURN were bound out to Robert PAGE (R).(2) If we can prove that Thomas WILBURN was a son of this Richard, then the John and William WILBORN, said to be "orphans of Richard WILBORN, dec'd" who were "bound out" to Robert PAGE (R) in 1759 were his brothers. Although taxed for a while in Goochland Co., William also moved across the James River into Cumberland Co., VA and was a witness to Thomas' will in 1774. Thomas WILBURN's will was signed on 10 Nov 1774 and probated in Cumberland Co., VA on 24 Apr 1775. In it, he named his wife and children.(3) He left all of his property, both real and personal to his wife Christian during her lifetime or until she remarried and then the real property was to be divided between their two sons, Thompson and Robert. The will names no other children but directs that "the remaining part of my Estate be equally divided between" his wife "& my children. Thomas WILBURN owned 222 acres on Muddy Creek in Cumberland Co., VA when he died. Christian Wilborn appears in the Cumberland Co., VA Personal Property Taxes as follows: (these lists were not searched past 1791 for WILBURN) 1782 - there - this year's list also shows a James PAGE there and I believe that this is my James, son of Exolheath, who is not in the Goochland Co., VA tax lists this year and for several years previous to this), but appears back in Goochland Co. in the 1783 list 1783, 1784, 1785 She does not appear in the lists, but some of these lists are missing 1786 to 1789 - negative for Christian 1790 - there 1791 negative for Christian These lists were not searched from 1792 to 1799 for the WILBURN name, but the 1800 Tax List is negative for Christian. Christian probably died ca. 1791-1797. In 1797, Thompson WILBURN, sold his share of the land (100 acres) to Thomas GOODMAN.(4) In 1804, the other son, Robert, sold his share (122 acres) to GOODMAN.(5) Thomas and Christian WILBURN had the following children: E-3-1 Elizabeth WILBURN, b. 12 Sep 1760, bp'd 9 Nov 1760 in Goochland Co., VA.(6) E-3-2 Nannie WILBURN/WELBURN, b. 24 Mar 1763, bp'd 24 Apr 1763 in Goochland Co., VA.(6) E-3-3 Robert WILBURN/WELBURN, b. 7 Oct 1765, bp'd 22 Dec 1765 in Goochland Co., VA.(6) E-3-4 Thompson WILBURN, b. ca. 1766-1774, probably in Cumberland Co., VA. Thompson WILBURNE/Wilbon's marr. bond was dated 30 Nov 1791 in Goochland Co., VA - for his marriage to Betsy PAGE. William PAGE gave his consent for her and the "surety" was James CLEMENTS. (7) Betsy was the dau. of William PAGE, the son of Robert PAGE (R). The two daughters named above were not named in Thomas WILBURN's will, leaving us to wonder if these two daughters (and possibly other children) were living when Thomas died. Other Cumberland Co., VA records (court and marriage) might shed light on this for us. NOTE For anyone interested in the WILBURN family, I have compiled a some information on them other than that which appears in my published records of the Goochland Co. PAGE families. Included are the following: Virginia Land Patents for WILBURN and Louisa Co., VA Deed Bks. A & B (1742-1759) (6 pgs.) Albemarle Co., VA Deed: Wm. MARTIN & wf. to Richard WILBURN (1759) (1 pg.) Amherst Co., VA deeds: (2 pgs.) Robert Wilburn to Gabriel Penn (1762/1762) Richard Wilbourn to John Eubank (1784/1784) Goochland Co., VA "Tithables" 1728-1781 for WILBURN (3 pgs.) Goochland Co., VA Personal Property Taxes 1782-1802 for WILBURN (3 pgs.) WILBURN - some (not all) marriage records Goochland Co. and some tax records (Pers. Prop. and Land) of Buckingham Co., VA. (2 pgs.) (total: 17 pgs.) If you would like all of these, please send $2.00 to me. You can send me an E-Mail me to get my snail-mail address if interested. This covers the cost of copies, large envelope and postage to send only - no profit is made for these items. Since the WILBURNs are not one of my families and this research was done only in an effort to trace the PAGE family of Goochland Co., VA, please do not direct any questions to me as this is all that I know about them to date. NOTES (1) Douglas: 50. (2) Goochland Co., VA Ct. Order Bk. 8, p. 180). (3) Cumberland Co., VA Will Bk. 2, p. 163. The will of Thomas Willbourn, signed 10 Nov 1774, probated 26 Dec 1774 - witnesses: Jacob Mosby, Wm. Smith and William Willbourn. 3. Hi, My first boo-boo (on these posts) has been pointed out to me by Dan PAGE. Thanks Dan, I appreciate your telling me about it. It was in Part 12, the post that I made yesterday....on the first child of Johnson and Lucy (PAGE) HODGES....Nancy ("Nannie") HODGES (E-2-1). Dan pointed out that his records show no more information on this Nancy and that she was not the one also called "Nannie" who md. Lewis PAGE, son of John PAGE & Edith CAUTHO(R)N. The latter "Nannie" was the one who md. Lewis PAGE. Such an error should have been obvious since this Nancy was born in 1755 and the later "Nannie" was b. at a later date, one that fits in better with a marriage to Lewis PAGE. Actually, I had both of them md. to Lewis PAGE in my records. Perhaps, if I had my records on the computer, this error would have jumped out at me....but it didn't. Actually, it was even more blaring when I found that I had both Nancy and "Nannie" being md. to Lewis PAGE in my records. I'm blaming my "human" gene for missing that one. I'm re-posting a new Part 12 today which changes that part of the original one. Please destroy, burn, chop up or bury (or do all of these to) the first "Part 12" so that it never reaches a human eye again and substitute this new one for it....don't want the old one out there to haunt me! I also want to implore all who read these postings to not accept everything on them as Gospel Truth. Although I strive for accuracy, I can make errors or my placings could be incorrect....especially those that have no concrete evidence to support them. It is up to YOU to make your own decisions as to where you place these people that I have placed according to my own decisions at this time. Even my ideas on these lineages may change when new information comes to light or when some of you give your reasons for placing them differently. The main reason for posting these listings is to engender discussion on this family and to, hopefully, be able to put them in their rightful places in this family. I'm hoping that others who have differing opinions on these families will come forth (on line) and give their ideas....I don't mind being challenged at all....as long as it's in a nice way. I will aim to make these continuing posts on Mondays and Thursdays.... but bear with me if they don't appear on these days. Dolores

    3. This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --------------282969E23966 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; name="Gooch-12" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline; filename="Gooch-12" Children of Lucy PAGE & Johnson HODGES (E-2?) Lucy PAGE is tentatively placed as a daughter of Exolheath PAGE purely through circumstantial evidence. This was supposed to be dis- cussed in Part 10, but was not, so the reasons will be given here. 1. She is of the correct age to have been one of his daughters. 2. She named a daughter, Christian, which was the name of Exolheath's wife. That name was not used in any of the PAGE families of Goochland Co. other than the descendants of Exolheath. 3. She doesn't fit into the families of any of the other PAGE men of Goochland County of an age to be her father. 4. Her children seemed to migrate with other grandchildren of Exolheath PAGE to KY, TN and AL and some married into their families. 5. Christian PAGE, dau. of Exolheath (and supposed sister of Lucy) md. Thomas WILBURN and Thomas was one of the men who gave security with Lucy in her husband's estate (see the following information). Neither Lucy nor Johnson's birthdates are known, but Lucy was probably born ca. 1730-37. Johnson HODGES was probably born ca. 1730- 1732 as he was first taxed with John HODGES (who was probably his father) in Goochland Co. in 1748, but could have reached the taxable age of 16 a few years before that as the tax records are incomplete for 1746 (the first year that John HODGES is listed) and missing for 1747. In a number of these tax lists, Johnson was an overseer for Charles WOODSON who also had land across the James River in Cumberland Co..(1) Johnson HODGES ceases to be in the Goochland Co. tax lists after 1760 and, shortly thereafter, may have moved to Cumberland Co. where he died intestate sometime before 25 Nov 1771 when Letters of Administration were granted to Lucy on his estate----John MOSS and Thomas WILBURN giving security with her.(2) After his death, Lucy moved back to Goochland Co. where, in 1773, she purchased 50 acres of land on a branch of Lickinghole Creek from John MIMS, Sr..(3) Lucy died sometime before 14 Nov 1805 when five of her children and their spouses deeded the 50 acres to Martin KEY. (4) Lucy probably md. Johnson HODGES in late 1754 or early 1755 considering the birthdate of hir eldest child. They had nine children: (not necessarily in order of birth) E-2-1 Nancy ("Nannie") HODGES Nancy was b. 21 Dec 1755 and bp'd 25 Jan 1756 in Goochland Co..(5). No more is known about her. E-2-2 William HODGES William was b. 1 Oct 1757 and bp'd 13 Nov 1757 in Goochland Co., VA.(5) No more is known about him. E-2-3 Annie HODGES Annie was b. 17 Sep 1759 and bp'd 9 Dec 1759 in Goochland Co., VA.(5) No more is known about her. She may have died young. E-2-4 Johnson HODGES, Jr. Johnson was b. ca. 1760-1762, probably in Cumber- land Co., VA. He died ca. 1815-1818 in Madison Co., AL where he had migrated with other relatives. He md. Elizabeth MULLINS on 15 Apr 1785 in Goochland Co., VA. The marriage record gives her name as MULLES, but it was MULLINS.(6) She was the dau. of John MULLINS and Elizabeth ("Betty") CONOLLY.(7) Johnson either purchased or obtained a patent for 160 acres of land in Madison Co. in 1809, but was listed in Goochland Co., VA in the 1810 Census. Shortly after that, he took his family to Madison Co..(8) Elizabeth released her dower rights in her husband's estate in 1820 and md. 2) Littleberry JONES, the uncle of Rebecca Thomas JONES, the second wife of Lewis PAGE (see E-2-1). Johnson HODGES, Jr. and Elizabeth had six children.(8) E-2-4-1 Nancy HODGES E-2-4-2 John HODGES E-2-4-3 Lucy HODGES E-2-4-4 Pleasant HODGES E-2-4-5 Richard Thompson HODGES E-2-4-6 Willis/William HODGES E-2-5 Lucy HODGES Lucy was b. 20 Jul 1763 and bp'd 23 Aug 1763.(5) No more is known about her. She may have died young. E-2-6 Jane ("Jenny") HODGES Jenny was probably b. ca. 1764-65, probably in Cumberland Co., VA. She md. her cousin, Leonard PAGE, who was the son of her uncle John PAGE (E-4). The marriage took place in Goochland Co., VA on 18 Oct 1782.(9) This family will be discussed under her husband, Leonard PAGE (E-4-1). E-2-7 Jesse HODGES Jesse was probably born ca. 1766-1767, probably in Cumberland Co., VA. He md. Susanna PAGE, on 21 Jan 1788 in Goochland Co., VA.(10) She was the dau. of William PAGE (R-1), son of Robert PAGE, Sr. (R). E-2-8 Sisly ("Cilly") HODGES Sisly was b. ca. 1767-1770, probably in Cumber- land Co., VA. She was unmarried in 1805 when she joined her brothers and their wives in selling their portion of their father's land in Goochland Co..(4) Nothing more is known about her. E-2-9 Christian ("Kitty") HODGES Christian was no doubt named for her grandmother. She was b. 26 Sep 1771 (after her father's death) and bp'd 30 Nov 1771 either in Cumberland or Gooch- land Co..(5). She md. her uncle James' son, William PAGE, on 5 Apr 1798.(11) William and Christian moved to Logan Co., KY in 1811 with other PAGE relatives. She probably died sometime between 1841 and 1844. This family will be covered under William PAGE (E-6-5). NOTES (1) Goochland Co., VA Tithable Tax Lists, 1728-1782, Virginia State Archives, Richmond, VA. (2) Cumberland Co., VA Ct. Lucy PAGE is tentatively placed as a daughter of Exolheath PAGE purely through circumstantial evidence. He md. She probably died sometime between 1841 and 1844. 3. NOTE: References backing up various statements included herewith will appear at the end of each family covered. Because superscripts cannot be sent over the Internet, these will be shown in parentheses after the item to which they pertain. A question mark after a person's number means that that person is tentatively placed in the family because there is no actual proof that they belong there. In this case, the placement is a "guess". The usual abbreviations for month of the year, county, State, marriage and other words generally used by genealogists will be used here. When information supplied by other researchers is used, an endnote will give credit to that person. CHILDREN of Betty PAGE & John LEE (E-1?) The placement of Betty PAGE as a daughter of Exolheath PAGE is not definitely proven. My reasons for placing her here were given in Post #2.
