I want to thank Delores Rutherford for her many posts clarifying these Page descendants. I have been working Logan County Kentucky for some time now, because my Page & Campbell descendants moved there ca 1850 and now thanks to her research, I can easily sort out what isn't mine. Thanks again. Cathy Crenshaw Morgan
Children of James PAGE (continued) (E-6) E-6-6 William PAGE William was b. 26 Oct 1776 and bp'd 25 Dec 1776 in Goochland Co., VA.(1) He was md. on 5 Apr 1798 to Christian HODGES by Rev. Lewis Chaudoin.(2) Christian was the dau. of Johnson HODGES and Lucy PAGE (E-2?). She was b. 26 Sep 1771 and bp'd 30 Nov 1771 either in Cumberland or Goochland Co., VA.(3) In Part #12, I stated that Christian HODGES was born after her father's death, but that should be changed as she was born before his death, but bp'd after he died. This change will also appear in the "Errata" at the end of these posts. Christian HODGES probably received her first name from her PAGE line. If I am correct in thinking that her mother was the dau. of Exolheath PAGE, then she could have received the name from her maternal grandmother. At any rate, she is also referred to as "Kitty" in other records. Some HODGES researchers believe that Johnson HODGES was the son of John HODGES who, in turn, was the son of the Thomas HODGES who died in Cumberland Co., VA in 1750. Thomas' wife's name was also Christian. However, records prove that Thomas' son, John, was in Halifax Co., VA at the same time that Johnson HODGES' father, John, was in Goochland Co., VA. Therefore, I do not believe that Christian HODGES' first name could have come from the HODGES side of her family. Perhaps a HODGES researcher will respond on this. William PAGE is shown in the Goochland Co., VA Personal Property Tax Lists as William PAGE, but also as: William Page, son of Mary (1798) Wm. Page of James (1804) Wm. Page (of Jas.) (1805, 1807, 1809-1810) The last year that he appears in these lists is 1811.(4) William PAGE inherited one-fourth of his father's land located on a branch of Lickinghole Creek in Goochland County. In 1807, William's sister Mary and her husband Major HANCOCK, Jr. deeded their portion of this land to him. The deed described this as being 20 5/8 acres on Licking- hole Creek "being their portion of a tract opf 81½ acres which James PAGE, dec'd was possessed of".(5) In 1808, William's brother Anderson PAGE and his wife Fanny "of Spartanburg District, South Carolina" sold their portion of the land to him. This, too, was described as being one-fourth part of 81½ acres of land of James PAGE, dec'd.(6) No acreage was given in this deed but the Land Tax Lists show that it was 20 1/3 acres.(7) Also, in 1808, William PAGE and his wife Christian joined some of her siblings to deed the land of her deceased mother, Lucy PAGE HODGES, to Martin KEY---50 acres.(8) Then, in 1811, when a number of other Goochland Co. PAGE families were migrating to Kentucky, William and Christian sold their 60 2/3 acres of the former James PAGE land to Francis COUSINS and joined them. William was said to be "of Goochland Co." when the deed was made in Sep 1811.(9) The next year (1812), William appears in the tax list of Logan Co., KY with his PAGE cousins. None of them had any land, but all had horses. He must have done well, however, as he purchased 52 acres of land there from John WASHINGTON in 1820.(10) The tax records describe this land as being on the Red River.(11) He mortgaged this land several times in the next several years. In the Logan Co., KY Tax Lists, William is often shown as William J. PAGE (probably showing that he was the son of "James").(12) Another William PAGE had arrived in Logan Co. from Goochland Co.. In 1827, William purchased an additional 20 acres of land in Logan Co., KY from Thomas SAUNDERS. This land was described as being on Big Whippoorwill Creek.(13) The tax lists show him with 72 acres this year, but the 1829 list credits him only with 52 acres again. He probably leased the 20 acres to his future son-in-law Russell MILLER shortly after purchasing it and, in 1849, he signed a release for this land to MILLER.(14) For this reason, this 20 acres no doubt appears in these tax lists under MILLER's name. William PAGE is credited with only 52 acres through 1834, the last year that I read these lists. William is said to have had a small store "in the country" and sold whiskey which was legal in those days.(15) The Logan Co., KY 1840 Census indicates that William and Christian PAGE were living with their son, Timothy PAGE, that year.(16) William's wife, Christian, died sometime between 1 Sep 1844 when she was paid $1.00 for some chickens in the estate of her son, Timothy PAGE, and 16 Jan 1847 when William made a marriage contract with his second wife, Rebecca PAGE.(17) Rebecca was Rebecca HALL who had md. 1) Jesse A. PAGE the son of William B. PAGE (E-7-1). There were no children by this second marriage. William died in January of 1850. His estate was settled on 2 Feb 1852 in Logan Co., KY. I do not have a copy of this settlement. William and Christian had five children: E-6-6-1 Timothy PAGE, b. ca. 1800 in Goochland Co., VA - md. Sally PAGE on 11 Nov 1829 in Logan Co., KY. (18) She was the dau. of William B. PAGE (E-7-1) and his wife, Nancy Page (E-4-5).(19) Sally is said to have died in August 1843 and Timothy died in Mar 1844. Two coffins were ordered about this time for each.(17) They left one child, a son, William A. Page, who was living with John and Nancy (PAGE) Toler in the 1850 Census of Logan Co., KY. Nancy was his mother's sister. E-6-6-2 Lemuel J. PAGE, b. ca. 1802 in Goochland Co., VA - md. Susan THOMAS on 29 Mar 1827 in Logan Co., KY.(18) This couple went to Henry Co., MO. They had five children.(19) E-6-6-3 Mary Ann PAGE, b. 25 Dec 1809, d. 6 Aug 1872 - md. Russell MILLER on 28 Jan 1833 in Logan Co., KY. (18) He died 28 May 1895. They had 10 children and remained in Logan Co., KY. E-6-6-4 James A. Page, b. ca. 1811 in KY - md. 1) Priscilla PAGE, the dau. of Leonard Johnson PAGE and Theodosia KING.(18) Leonard was the son of Leonard PAGE (E-4-1) and Jenny HODGES (E-2-6).(21) James and Priscilla had nine children. E-6-6-5 Another child, a female, name unknown and no more information. E-6-7 Catherine ("Caty") PAGE Catherine was probably the youngest child in this family. We have no birthdate for her, but we know that she was md. to George HARLOW in Goochland Co., VA on 1 May 1800 by Rev. Lewis CHAUDOIN, the old PAGE marry-er. She was called "Caty" on the marriage bond dated 28 Apr 1800.(22) As stated in Part #19, she may have died sometime before 1806 when there is a marriage record in Goochland Co., VA where "a" George HARLOW md. Polly MULLIS/MULLINS on 23 Oct of that year.(23) Most of the information on the descendants of the children of William and Christian PAGE was supplied by Mrs. Eleanor Poindexter of Russellville, Logan Co., KY. NOTES (1) Douglas: 264. (2) Williams: 70. The marriage license, dated the same day as the marriage states that Christian was the dau. of Lewcy HODGES. The "surety" was Jesse HODGES. (3) Douglas: 212. (12) The other William PAGE, also of this county, was designated as William B. PAGE---the "B." obviously was for "Benjamin" as this William was the son of Benjamin PAGE (E-7) of Goochland Co.. The "surety" was Lewis PAGE (E-4-7). See Part #15 for Lewis. The witness was Jo. WOODSON and they were md. by Rev. Lewis CHAUDOIN. (next - Benjamin PAGE, son of Exolheath PAGE)
This is the first of two posts today. Children of James PAGE (continued) (E-6) Because this is my line, I'd like to digress a bit here and discuss the land of James PAGE (E-6). James PAGE (E-6) purchased his land in two parcels: William TURNER to James PAGE (1791) - 62 acres.(1) James ROBARDS to James PAGE (1791) - 17¾ acres.(2) This totals 79¾ acres. No other deeds to James PAGE appear in the Goochland Co. records. This land was described in the deeds as being called "the Whittle" and was located on Licking- hole Creek in the northern section of the county----actually the northwestern part. At some time, the land may have been re- surveyed as it was later described in the deed records as being 81½ acres and in the Land Tax Lists from 1792 to 1796 (under James PAGE) and 1797 to 1807 (under James PAGE, dec'd) as being both 80¼ and 80½ acres.(3) When the land was sold by his heirs, two of the three deeds found described it as being 81½ acres. Despite much research on the division of this property, I could find no record showing the exact acreage allotted to each of the heirs, but it appears that the land was divided into four parts, each heir receiving one-fourth (or 20±) acres of land. James did not leave a will naming his children, so we cannot be certain which of his remaining children received the other portion of his land. The deed records through 1832 only account for the sale of three-fourths of James PAGE's land. William PAGE - ¼ of the land Mary (PAGE) HANCOCK - ¼ of the land Anderson PAGE - ¼ of the land & one more heir - ¼ of the land In going over the list of James PAGE's other children who could have been alive to inherit his land, we are left wondering if three of them died before he did....but WHICH ones???? I searched the deed indexes for deeds involving the children who were not represented in the disposition of James's land through deeds and came up with: ELIZABETH PAGE md. Thomas MORELAND - there were no deeds involving them - was Elizabeth dead? The Goochland Co., VA deed indexes show only one deed from "a" Thomas MORELAND and that was for a Power of Attorney to Alexander FOWLER dated 1810, but the actual record, as follows, has no mention of Thomas MORELAND in it: William Wilson HANCOCK of Made: 20 Jan 1810 Tennessee, attorney-in- Recorded: 16 Apr 1810 fact for Major HANCOCK md. to Mary MORELAND, dau. of Wright MORELAND, now dec'd and Charles MORELAND & Dudley MORELAND, sons of said Wright MORELAND to Alexander FOWLER of Goochland Co., VA(4) This deed for land involved, not James PAGE's land, but the land of Wright MORELAND, dec'd. BENONI PAGE - I believe that he died as a child, so would not be an heir. JAMES PAGE - that this James was alive when his father died is reasonably certain, so he could have been the fourth heir. The Goochland Co., VA deeds involving "a" James PAGE do not pertain to this James.....they are for the James PAGE, grandson of Robert PAGE (R). CATHERINE ("CATY") PAGE md. George HARLOW - she may have died before the division of James' estate. The Goochland Co., VA marriage records show that a George HARLOW md. Polly Mullis/Mullins on 23 Oct 1806. The marriage bond for this marriage was witnessed by Lewis PAGE (E-4-7) and John WOODSON.(5) "A" George HARLOW was in Goochland Co. as late as 1835 when his daughter, Elizabeth, md. Washington HARLOW, son of Nathaniel HARLOW. No deeds involving any of the three above persons who could have inherited the rest of James PAGE's land could be found in the Goochland Co. records to 1832. THE DISPOSITION OF JAMES PAGE'S LAND In 1807, James' dau. Mary and her husband Major HANCOCK, Jr. deeded their portion of this land to James' son William. The deed described this as being 20 5/8 acres on Lickinghole Creek "being their portion of a tract of 81½ acres which James PAGE, dec'd was possessed of".(6) Then, in 1808, James's son Anderson PAGE and his wife Fanny "of Spartan- burg District, South Carolina" sold their portion of the land to James' son William PAGE. This, too, was described as being "one-fourth part of 81½ acres" of land of James PAGE, dec'd---no acreage was given in the deed.(7) However, the Land Tax Lists show it as both 20 1/3 and 20 2/3 acres, the former being the correct amount according to subsequent entries in these lists.(8) In 1811, William PAGE and his wife sold the above land and his portion of the 81½ acres, which now totalled 60 2/3 acres to Francis COUSINS.(9) This leaves a balance of 20 5/6 acres unaccounted for. The mystery remains....what happened to the other one-fourth of James PAGE's land?????? Perhaps a reading of the Land Tax Lists for the names Thomas MORELAND and George HARLOW would shed some light on this. I just read these lists for the PAGE name at the time. NOTES (1) Rutherford-Deeds: 15. (Goochland Co., VA Deed Bk. 16, p. 1-2) (2) Rutherford-Deeds: 15. (Goochland Co., VA Deed Bk. 16, p. 2-3) (3) Rutherford-Land Tax: various pages. HANCOCKE of Green Co., TN on 4 Dec 1809 to "ask, demand, sue for, levy, recover all my right and title of my share of my wife, farthers estate that is acoming to me by Haire ship". This is not the same Major HANCOCK who md. Mary PAGE of this PAGE family. (Goochland Co., VA Deed Bk. 20, p. 513-514) On 19 Dec 1809, Dudley and Charles MORELAND of Carter Co., TN gave William W. HANCOCK of Green Co., TN their Power of Attorney to get their portion of their father's (Wright MORELAND's) estate. (Goochland Co., VA Deed Bk. 20, p. 514-515) No similar Power-of-Attorney was found in the Goochland Co., VA Deed Indexes (or anywhere close to those mentioned above) for Thomas MORELAND. Right, and before that Ohio County VA included what is now Washington County PA. Knowing the county at the time of the event helps in finding original records and documenting facts--which leads to entering the historical county, not the modern one, if there were boundary changes. I am looking for any info on William PAGE (I have been told his middle initial was L.) born about 1803 in the city of Richmond,VA. He moved to Poquoson,York Co,VA where he married Rachel MESSICK 27 December 1826. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Cindy Fregoe DAVCINEWA@aol.com
Steven, I have found in my research that many towns of yesterday changed or became part of another county etc. Also, many counties were created after years of settlement and could have been a different county at time of record creation. New York is especially well known for this. MJG
I have come across a similar situation researching my WOLFE ancestors of Iowa but in reverse. They have him born in Preston County, VA but over the years it divided up 2-ways, part to PA and part to West VA. So where do I look for records? In VA, PA or WVa? There was no town or city given, just a county as I am sure there was no near town to list :-) Steven In a message dated 99-02-22 16:03:49 EST, you write: > Just > today I found references to records associated a person in a Federal Census > in Ohio County that pertained to Ward #3 in the city of Wheeling in what > was then Virginia, but is now West Virginia.

It has been done for years because vital records were normally kept by counties, and many farmers and ranchers did not live near a city or town. In places such as Ohio and Penn. the Townships are very important and often used, but very seldom the towns (Exceptions are of course the big cities such as Philadelphia). The exact boundaries of townships and counties, and changes thereto, as well as dates of formation are also very important bits of info that help researchers who hunt for early records such as: County History Books; Orphan's Court Records; Administrations of Estates; Wills and Probates of Wills; Estate Inventories and Administrations; Birth & Death Records; Marriage Records; Grantor and Grantee Deed transactions; Poor Childrens' Lists, etc.. In addition the library system that usually contain Local & Family History Sections with many family histories on file is organized and funded by counties, although the States and Federal Government also have useful libraries. Hope this helps family historians document locations better as it sure helps others. George W. Page Most Genealogical programs have more than one fields to store location data. The Personal Ancestrial File (vers. 3.0) of the L.D.S. Church now allows a greater number of characters to appear in the location fields. It sells for $35!
Children of James PAGE (continued) (E-6) E-6-3 Mary PAGE Mary was b. 21 Jan 1771 and bp'd 10 Apr 1771 Goochland Co., VA.(1) She was md. to Major HANCOCK, Jr. on 14 Apr 1794 by Rev. Lewis CHAUDOIN.(2) Major HANCOCK, Jr. was born 8 Feb 1772, the son of Major HANCOCK, Sr. and his wife Ann THOMAS.(3) Three other siblings of Major HANCOCK, Jr. md. PAGEs. Williams' book of the Goochland Co., VA marriages is incorrect in stating that Mary was the dau. of William PAGE. The marriage bond gives James PAGE as her father and I know that to be correct. The only other William PAGEs of an age to have a daughter of this age were: William PAGE (son of John PAGE "J") - he was gone from Goochland Co. by the 1760's. William PAGE (son of Robert PAGE "R") - he did not have a dau. named Mary. He had a dau. who was baptized as "Patsy" and was called "Polly", but she was not born until 1782 and she md. a HODGES. William PAGE (son of Exolheath PAGE "E") - he had a dau. named Mary Anderson PAGE (E-5-1) discussed earlier in Part #16. When Mary's father died, she inherited one-fourth of his land and, in 1807, Major and Mary (PAGE) HANCOCK, Jr. sold their part of the land to her brother William PAGE.(4) The land was described as being 20 5/8 acres on Lickinghole Creek (one-fourth part of 81 1/2 acres) "which James Page dec'd was possessed of". Then they joined Mary's brother Anderson and other PAGE families in Spartanburg Co. (Dist.), SC. Upon moving to Spartanburg Co., SC, Major HANCOCK purchased 115 acres of land there which was described as being "on Cherokee Creek waters of Broad River" in 1812 when he sold it to James PAGE ("possibly E-6-5).(5) The Spartanburg Co., SC census records that Mary and Major had children---at least one son and three daughters. Mary probably died there sometime between 1820 and 1830 and Major md. 2) Elizabeth, dau. of Robert PAGE (E-9) and Rachel BROCKMAN. Elizabeth was eighteen years younger than her husband. They lived in Woodruff, Spartanburg Co., SC and had one child. Major's second wife, Elizabeth (age 60), was listed in the 1850 Spartanburg Co., SC Census with Mansell and Matilda LAWSON (both age 20) living with her.(6) E-6-4 Benoni PAGE He was b. 1 Oct 1772 and bp'd 25 Oct 1772 in Goochland Co., VA.(1) "Benoni" is a Biblical name which means "son of my sorrow". He evidently did not live to reach taxable age as these records do not list him at any time. Also, since he did not share in the division of his father's land, it would appear that he died before his father. E-6-5 James PAGE He was b. 10 Sep 1774 and bp'd 3 Nov 1774 in Goochland Co., VA.(1) James md. Sarah HANCOCK, sister of Major HANCOCK, Jr., on 20 Nov 1800.(7) He was probably the James PAGE, Jr. in the 1792 tax list. James was in the Goochland Co. tax lists only through 1798 (with his father from 1793 to 1796, with his mother in 1797 and as "James Page, son of Mary" in 1798).(8) One would think that he would have also inherited a share of his father's land, but there is no deed in the Goochland Co. record showing that he sold any land there. James does not appear in the Goochland Co., VA records after 1798, nor does he appear in the censuses of that county. There is some evidence that he "may" have gone to Spartanburg Co., SC with his brother Anderson and sister Mary (Page) HANCOCK. He "may" have been the James PAGE who purchased 50 acres from Anderson PAGE (E-6-2) in 1809, a few years before Anderson left there.(9) Another deed that "may have" involved this James PAGE was for 115 acres of land in Spartanburg Co., SC "on Cherokee Creek waters of Broad Run" which "a" James PAGE purchased from Major HANCOCK (husband of E-6-3) in 1812.(10) He sold this land the next year to Laurence ANDERSON at a 200% profit.(11) It appears that James retained the 50 acres purchased from Anderson PAGE as no deed whereby this land was sold was found. I haven't "chewed on" the Spartanburg Co. deeds enough to learn whether or not this James is the one involved in these Spartanburg Co. deeds. One would have to obtain copies of all of the original deeds in order to compare the boundaries of them to find out what happened to this 50 acres of land. Robert PAGE (E-9) had a son named James who was old enough to be the one involved in the previous land deals, but it does not appear that Robert's son, James ever owned this 50 acres. The marriage bond is on file at the Goochland Co., VA courthouse and it states that her father was James PAGE. (4) Rutherford-Deeds: 20. Since I have not consulted the HANCOCK grantee deed for this land, I do not know the date that Major purchased it. I did abstract the deed from Major HANCOCK to James PAGE. No wife for Major HANCOCK joined in that deed. It was made 7 Jan 1812 and recorded 10 Jan 1814. (6) 1850 Census, Spartanburg Co., SC, p. 256. (7) Williams: 70. Their marriage bond was dated 19 Nov 1800. The "surety" for the bond was Major HANCOCK. They were md. by Rev. Lewis CHAUDOIN. O, p. 249-250. It was made on 15 Nov 1813 and recorded on 10 Jan 1814. No wife joined as grantor with James in this deed and he signed by mark "X". (next time - children of James PAGE, continued)
Before my mailbox becomes full with all your great responses...I would like to first thank everyone for their speedy replies. I truly understand why many have placed the county in the "place" field's of their databases along with the city and state but I guess I just have more recently noticed people doing it. In all my searches on Ancestry and downloading their gedcoms as well as on Kindred Konnections over the years, being file attached others, mailed group sheets, I guess I have been one who just haven't ran across the useage of all three names being used by the people doing research on my surnames? I have just recently started seeing an increase of (city, county, state) usage which made me wonder what was happening? New software? New restrictions? Or what? But guess it was a matter of choice once before, a trend now people are following? Steven
Re: Dolores Rutherford's posts on Exolheath's children For grins, in case some of you haven't figured it out, descendants of William Johnson Page, (b. 5 Mar 1824, Logan Co KY) and Louisa Saunders (b. 31 Dec 1823 Logan Co.) are also probably descended from Exolheath Page in at least FOUR lines--and if Dolores is right (and I certainly do not dispute her research!) and Lucy Page who married Johnson Hodges is also a daughter of Exolheath, that makes FIVE lines. Thus far, Dolores' posts have covered four of these lines. to wit: 1. Lucy Page/Johnson Hodges' daughter, Jenny Hodges, m. Leonard Page 18 Oct 1782. Jenny's grandson through daughter Mahala, was William Johnson Page. 2, 3, 4. John Page married Edith Cauthorn, 1761.a)Their son, Leonard, was grandfather to William Johnson Page through daughter, Mahala. b)--and the #3 liine: their daughter Elizabeth/Betsy married David Saunders in Goochland 1 Nov 1792. They were the grandparents of Louisa Saunders (parents=James Saunders and Lucy Mimms) who married William Johnson Page. c) Line #4! Their daughter, Nancy married William Page, and Nancy and William's son, John J. Page married Mahala Page--- William Johnson Page's parents. Dolores hasn't posted the fifth line yet, but of course it already appears in #4 above. 5. Exolheath's son Benjamin married Anna Wright late 1771, their son William was grandfather to William Johnson Page by son John J. (see #4 above) My husband is descended from William Johnson Page/Louisa Saunders' son James William who married Hepsy Lucinda Taylor in Logan Co. and moved to McCracken Co. where Pages, Dales and Hughes all happily intermarried. David's cousin, Wilma Page Lanier, is camped out in the Paducah library trying to straighten out THAT maze. Oh, and another part of the puzzle: Louisa Saunders Page's mother, Lucy Mimms is related (distantly!) to both Jesse James AND his wife, Zerelda. Isn't genealogy fun? I admit that when I'm not screaming about this family, I'm laughing a lot! Karen Dale Larkspur CO
Hi George... I think you might had misunderstood me a bit when I asked about the use of county names. True, many people did not live near towns and yes, even I have been using "County, State" format for years. My question was that I've seen people more recently use the "City, County, State" format - using all three at the same time for the location. But my software would not allow such long strings of data. (I use Family Tree Journal version 12.1 so I can have automatically generated books with index). Steven
I have noticed recently a trend of adding the "county" name after the "city" name in location - such as John Doe b. 4 March 1856 Clinton, Sampson County, NC I know that the LDS requests this format but over the years I have not encountered many people or gedcoms utilizing it, only listing city and state or county and state but not both. I know my software only has a 30 character field for names and places and will cut off anything extending past that, even when importing a gedcom it will slice off any letters past 30. Is there a reason why all of the sudden people have started to use this city, county, state format more often? Steven Page
Need parents of Benjamin born Dec 20, 1817 Ga. He married Martha Ann Hopkins. I need prove that his parents are William Nelson Page and Mary Landers. His brother, if this is the correct family John Bunion Page b. 1828 married Martha Ann Hopkins sister Margaret Howell Hopkins. Benjamin moved his family to Giles Co. Tn. where he died in the civil war. Any help on this line appreciated. Dalina
I finally found the parents of my Marion Washington Page in the 1850 and 1860 Madison Co., Fl census. Josiah Page was born abt 1805 in S.C. He appears to have been married twice: Bersheba Phelps and Epsey ?. His children included: Marion W., Jackson, Solomon, Louisa, Mary, Angeline, Lorina, Nancy, Josiah, Winnie and John. Anyone have more info on this Josiah Page? Thanks. Bill willbees@mediaone.net
Hi folks! I'm new to the list, so I crave your indulgence for any faux pas. My PAGE was Fanny, married Robert Bundy abt 1890s in Southampton, Hampshire, UK. She lived to see Her Majesty's telegram on her 100th birthday, so was born in about 1878, probably in Southampton. Can anyone connect, or provide any other details please? Cathy in Hampshire, UK
