Just a note to correct something in Part #17-S-1 under #-6-2-1-1. It's too blatant an error to wait for my "Errata". Don't know what I was thinking about when I wrote that: "Francis M. HARPER'S wife, Martha J., evidently died sometme between 13 Jun and 18 Sep 1870......" etc. Francis M. HARPER md. Nancy M. PAGE, dau. of James PAGE's (E-6-2-1) second marriage----not a Martha J.. Perhaps the 1870 "Mortality Schedule" for Hart Co., KY would have the information of the death of Nancy M. (PAGE) HARPER if it occurred any time in the year preceding when the 1870 Census was taken. Maybe someone with access to this Mortality Schedule check this for us. Also, the statement that Francis M. moved the family to Hart Co. is incorrect....he would have moved them FROM Hart Co. TO Monroe Co. (the other way around)....and it was in HART Co. that F. M. HARPER lived two doors away from Anderson T. PAGE. F. M. HARPER was living in Hart Co. on 13 Jun 1870, but he had moved back to Monroe Co. by 17 Sep of that year....his father and step-mother having died. Lois Gaug of Harper, KS (my correspondent on this line) states that Francis Marion HARPER later moved to MO. Please put this correction with your segment Part 17-S-1. Thanks, Dolores

The bond for their marriage was dated 16 Dec 1840, but the date that they were actually married is not known.(1) John B. and Nancy were enumerated in the Monroe Co., KY 1830-1850 Censuses, but were in East Fork, Metcalfe Co., KY in the 1860 Census in which John's occupation is given as "clergyman U.B.". Nancy appears in the Metcalfe Co. 1870 and 1880 Censuses with her son, Henry Jeffers PAGE and with him and his wife in the 1900 Census of Summer Shade, Metcalfe Co., KY----Nancy's birthdate is given as May 1812 in the latter census. Nancy died on 9 Aug 1909 and is buried in the cemetery in Summer Shade KY. John and Nancy had six children: James Chastain, Robert, Josiah/Joseph Newton, Lucy Margaret, John M. and Henry Jeffers. E-6-2-1-3 Anderson T. PAGE, b. 20 Feb 1820 in Monroe Co., KY, d. 28 Nov 1881 in Hart Co., KY.(2) He md. Sarah, dau. of Julius HUFFMAN and Nancy CROW in 1848.(3) Anderson T. PAGE first appears in the Monroe Co., KY Tax Lists in 1841 and continued to be taxed there without any land through 1850. He is first taxed on 70 acres of land on Skeggs/Skaggs Creek from 1851.(4) When he sold this land to Martin Bartley in Sept 1865 and moved to Hart Co., KY, the land was described as being "67 acres on Skeggs Creek".(5) This couple had five children: George W., Martha A., Louis C., Sarah J. and John Henry.(6) E-6-2-1-4 Eliza PAGE, b. ca. 1824, d. ? - md. T. J. BROWN sometime after 1850 as she was still living with her father in that census. E-6-2-1-5 Martha PAGE, b. ca. 1827-1828, d. ? . She never married and lived with her father until his death. In the 1870 Census, she was living with her older sister Mary and her husband Fleming B. HARPER in Precinct #5, Monroe Co., KY. (See #E-6-2-1-1) I could not find this family in KY in the 1880 Census. Because I didn't discuss the children of Anderson PAGE (E-6-2), son of James PAGE (E-6) in Part #17, I would like to do so before going on with the other Goochland Co., VA PAGE families. James PAGE and his son, Anderson PAGE, are my line. The only chil- dren of James PAGE whose descendants I have been able to trace are his sons Anderson and William. I gave William's children in Part #20, but I didn't show Anderson's offspring in Part #17. Therefore, I am adding Parts #17-S-1 ("S"-Supplement), #17-S-2 and #17-S-3,so that they can be placed in the correct order in these posts. James PAGE & Family (E-6-2-1) James' birthdate is estimated from the census records as ca. 1794- 1795. He was most probably born in Goochland Co., VA as his father appears in the Personal Property Tax Lists at that time.(1) When he was a child, his parents moved first to Spartanburg Dist./Co., SC and then moved to Cumberland Co., KY sometime between 1811 and 1820. Anderson's cousin John PAGE (E-9-1), son of Robert PAGE (E-9), lived a few miles away in what later became Monroe Co., KY where he had settled a few years earlier. James was md. twice. He had five children by his first wife whose name is unknown at this time. Much research has been done to determine whether or not a marriage recorded in Cumberland Co., KY was for this James. The marriage occurred at the correct time to be him, but no proof has been found to confirm it. This marriage record is for a James PAGE who md. Sally ROICE on 11 Aug 1816 in Cumberland Co., KY(2) Because this marriage seems very likely to be for my James PAGE, I will include here the results of my research done to date on this subject. There was only one ROICE/ROYCE/ROYSE family that area of four counties (Adair, Barren/now Metcalfe, Cumberland, and Green Cos., KY who could be related to Sally ROICE of this marriage record. That was Solomon ROYSE (as the family now spells it) who lived only a short distance away from James PAGE's family on Harrod's Fork in the south- western part of Adair Co.. His wife's name was Sally and she was the dau. of John STOTTS who settled at about the same time as Solomon in the part of Green Co. that later fell into Adair Co.. I've done a great deal of research on this ROYSE line, but will not discuss it here except to say that nothing has been found to date to link it with this (my) James PAGE. As stated previously, Harrod's Fork was only a short distance from where this James PAGE lived with his parents on Mudcamp Creek on land that was in both Cumberland and Monroe Cos.---in the extreme north- western corner of Cumberland Co. and the extreme northeastern corner of Monroe Co..(3) I've visited that area of KY several times, but didn't have the time to check the distance between Harrod's Fork in Adair Co. and Mudcamp Creek in Cumberland Co. or to check to see if there was a church that both may have attended so that they could have easily met--- possibly somewhere between where each of them lived. There was only one other James PAGE in that area besides Anderson's son in 1816. However, that one has been placed in a PAGE family that came from Albemarle Co., VA and the names of his wife and children are known. Another James PAGE appeared first in the Cumberland Co., KY records in 1829 and census shows that he lived in the part of that county that fell into Clinton Co. when it was created in 1836. He died before the 1850 Census was taken, so his birthplace is unknown, but that census shows that two of his sons were born in Georgia. It seems, by process of elimination and by other circumstantial evidence, that the Cumberland Co. marriage was most probably for this (my) James....but I would like to see more concrete proof before definitely stating it. James eventually owned 200 acres of land variously described as being on Marrowbone, Mudcamp and Meshack/Maschack Creek in Monroe Co.. It was located in the northeastern corner of the county. This PAGE family was called "the Persimmon PAGEs" to differentiate them from his cousin, John PAGE's (E-9-1-1), family. The name no doubt was derived from the persimmon trees on his property. Just how James obtained this land could not be found as the Monroe Co. deed records were burned when the Confederates burned the courthouse in the Civil War. The information on his land was obtained from the Monroe Co. Tax Records.(4) James' first wife died sometime between 1830-1834. They had five children: E-6-2-1-1 Mary PAGE, b. ca. 1818, d. ? - md. Fleming B. HARPER as his 2nd wife. The 1870 Census lists Fleming B. HARPER, his wife, son and his son's family in Monroe Co., KY. 1870 Census Monroe Co., KY: (taken 17 Sep) Fleming B. HARPER, age 67, b. VA Mary " , " 53, b. KY Elizabeth H. " , " 27, " " Lucinda ?. " , " 23, " " Martha J. " , " 11, " " Sarah B. " , " 9, " " Julia A.L. " , " 7, " " William A. " , " 5, " " James F. " , " 4, " " Francis M. " , " 2, " " Martha PAGE, " 43, " " Francis M. HARPER, " 33, " "(5) Francis M. HARPER's wife, Martha J., evidently died sometime between 13 Jun and 18 Sep 1870 between the time that these the above census and the following census was taken....and Francis and his family moved in with his father. Francis later moved to MO. 1870 Census Hart Co., KY: (taken 13 Jun) F. M. HARPER, age 32, b. KY Martha J. " , " 11, " " Sallie " , " 9, " " Julian " , " 8, " " (female) William " , " 6, " " Fleming " , " 4, " " Francis M. ", " 2, " " Martha PAGE, " 45, " "(6) It is obvious that these are the same families minus Fleming B. and Martha J. HARPER. Perhaps this couple died and Fleming B.'s eldest son moved the family to Hart Co. between when the two censuses were taken. Oddly enough, Martha PAGE has aged two years in the move! Her brother, Anderson T. PAGE (E-6-2-1-3) lived two doors away in this census. Also see the information under E-6-2-1-8 following. NOTES (1) Rutherford-Pers. Prop. Taxes: 3-8. (2) History of Cumberland County" (Kentucky) by J. W. Wells. 1947. The Standard Printing Company, Louisville, KY: 47. This book states that "prior to the Cumberland Co. courthouse fire on 30 Dec 1933 which destroyed the marriage records from 1789-1882, Mrs. Nora C. McGee made a copy of the marriages from 1799-1817". Wells included them in his book. (3) When part of Cumberland Co. was taken off to form part of Monroe Co. in 1823, the record stated that part of the bounds were described as "....crossing Mud Camp Creek....4½ miles leaving James Page in Monroe and his father in Cumberland". I do not have the source of this quote, but it was included in a letter from Merritt L. Page of Green City, MO to DCR dated 27 Nov 1979. (4) Monroe Co., KY Tax Lists, 1820-1861 - Mormon Microfilms #8165 and 8166. James, as eldest son, may have inherited his father's two parcels of 46 and 50 acres of land on in Monroe Co. on which James was first taxed in 1830. The land was said to be 100 acres on Marrowbone Creek. From 1832 onward, this land was described in these lists as being on various creeks (Marrowbone, E. Fork or Mudcamp), but it appears to be the same land. He must have purchased more land in the same area as, in the 1848-1861 lists show him variously with 200 acres on Marrowbone, Mudcamp or Mashacks Creek. However described, it appears to have been the same land. (5) 1870 Monroe Co., KY Census, p. 430 - Precinct #5 - Dwelling and Family #176. Martha J., age 53, was Fleming B. This book is all about Robert Page and Rachel Brockman and the descendants of their 10 children. It contains information on all of Cynthia Page and Charles Webb's 13 children. (This was Charles Webb's third marriage. He must have been some man since he had at least 4 children from his previous wives) It also contains info on all of Mary Emily Webb's 11 children. She married William Randolph Cook. Charles Webb was the son of Lazarus Webb and Nancy Creek. Who knows, you might be named in the book. As I don't know your name, I can't tell. Are you aware of the large Webb Family Reunion and workshop that meets every year in Benton, IL, in July. I can find the exact date if you are interested. It is usually a 2 or 3 day event on a weekend. I'm not sure what you need. The book is available for $50 plus $3.50 postage from me at Donald W. Children of Benjamin & Anna PAGE (E-7) (concluded) E-7-5 Anna ("Anner") PAGE She was probably born sometime in the 1780's in Goochland Co., VA. and md. Andrew CRESSON on 5 Dec 1805 in Gooch- land Co..(1) In 1827, Andrew and Anna CRESSAW/CRESSAN(?) joined with her brothers Benjamin PAGE, Jr. and Mann PAGE to deed their interest in their father's land in Goochland Co., VA to John H. BRITT. At this date, CRESSONs/CRESSAWs were said to be "of Hanover Co.", VA.(2) Andrew CRESSON (etc. spellings) does not appear in the VA censuses until 1830. Whether or not the man of that name in the 1830 Botetourt Co., VA census is him remains to be proven.(3) At any rate, he was gone from there by 1840. The Deed Index of that county shows only the following man with a spelling that "could" be CRESSON which admittedly, is a stretch of the imagination): Henry CRODEAN to Henry Bolton (deed dated 1829)(4) I have not ordered a copy of this deed to see if it might be Andrew and Anna/Anner/Hannah or the Henry and wife mentioned next. The 1840 Census of Logan Co., KY shows a Henry CRENSHAW which could be the following man.(5) A man named Henry P. CRESSAN/CRESSAW purchased 38 acres of land on Big Whippoorwill Creek in Logan Co., KY from Lemuel PAGE (E-6-6-2) and his wife, Susan, in 1830.(6) Several of the former Goochland Co., VA PAGE families also lived on this creek. Could this Henry be the same man who md. Anna/Anner PAGE and then changed his first name...or could Andrew have died and Anna marry 2) another CRESSAN/ CRESSAW relative of his???? Henry CRESSAN/CRESSEAN also purchased more land in Logan Co., KY from 1830-1841. Part of his other land lay on Wolf Lick Creek and part of it was on Big Whippoorwill Creek. The 1850 Census of Logan Co., KY shows: Henry P. CRESSAW age 70, b. France (farmer) Anna P. " " 69, b. VA Hersey A. TOLER " 9 Winny Kelly " 18 (the birthplaces and sexes of the last two persons were not given to me) The 1860 Census of Logan Co., Ky shows: Henry CRISSEAU age 80, b. France (farmer) Hannah " " 78, b. VA Tabitha TOLLER " 19, " KY (the 1850 and 1860 Census readings were sent to me by Mrs. Eleanor Poindexter) It is my opinion that this Anna P./Hannah is the Anna/ Anner PAGE, dau. of Benjamin and Anna (WRIGHT) PAGE. If so, she evidently died sometime between 1860 and 7 Nov 1865 when Henry md. Cherry F. O'Neal in Logan Co., KY.(7) Henry didn't live long after his marriage as his will was proven 24 Feb 1868 in Logan Co.. In his will, he left his property to "my beloved wife C. F. CRESSAN and my helpless child Tally".(9) His estate was settled on 23 Aug 1869 under the name Henry CRISSEAU.(9) One added note on the TOLER family. There were a number of families of this name in the Goochland Co., VA records from 1796 onward. E-7-6 Sophia PAGE Her birthdate is estimated as ca. 1809-1813. On 20 Feb 1827, she came into the Goochland Co., VA court and chose Andrew CRESSAW/CRESSON for her guardian.(10) I have no further information on her. NOTES (1) I have evidently misplaced the reference for this item. (2) Rutherford-Deeds: 26. (Goochland Co., VA Deed Bk. 27, p. 378-379) (3) 1830 Census of Botetourt Co., VA: 266. Read from a microfilm of the original census. The published Index for the 1830 Census shows the name as Andrew Crisson, but I read it as Andrew Cresson. He gave his age as 40-50 and his wife's age was also 40-50. There were no children in this household. (4) Botetourt Co., VA Deed Bk. 19, p. 101 (date: 1829) (5) 1840 Census of Logan Co., KY: 209. Henry Crenshaw was age 50-60 and had one other male age 20-30 in his household, a female age 50-60 and another female age 15-20. The listing of names was not done alphabetically, so one could get some idea of who his neighbors were. Listed within 10-12 doors away from Henry were Timothy Page (E-6-6-1) who was a cousin of Anna PAGE Cresson. There were several other former descendants of former Goochland Co., VA PAGE families nearby. (6) Logan Co., KY Deed Bk. Q, p. 405-406. This may be old news to some of you'all, but I found it useful to be reminded of some of the assumptions used during research that should be clarified ....connie ----------------------- The following is paraphrased from the National Genealogical Society's "American Genealogy: A Basic Course": In-Laws: terms like father-in-law, mother-in-law, etc. had the same meaning as they do today, which is a kinship by marriage. However, they may also have had different meanings. Father-in-law could refer to a step-father, son-in-law to a stepchild, etc. Cousin: The term "cousin" was once used generally to indicate almost ANY DEGREE OF RELATIONSHIP BY BLOOD OR MARRIAGE OUTSIDE THE IMMEDIATE FAMILY. VERY EARLY IN AMERICAN HISTORY THE TERM WAS USED TO REFER TO NEPHEW OR NIECE. When you see the word cousin used in early records, you will need to do more research to clarify the relationship between the two people. Nephew: The terms nephew and niece were not in common use in the colonies until before the mid-eighteenth century (i.e. 1750's). The term cousin was used to denote this relationship. In rare instances, the term "nephew" was used to mean grandson or granddaughter because the word comes from the Latin term for "grandson" or "nepos." During this early period, "nephew" was used for males and females. Brother: This term was used very generally and in addition to its obvious meaning, could denote a brother-in-law, a husband of a sister-in-law, a half-brother, a stepbrother, or even a colleague within the church. "My now wife." This term is sometimes found in a will and may, as is often assumed, indicate the testator had a former wife, but this is not necessarily so unless he is referring to children by a first wife and children by his current or "now" wife. When the term is used WITHOUT reference to children, it more usually means the testator intends the bequest for his current wife and not any subsequent he may have. Senior and Junior: Terms to denote two men with the same in the same community, regardless of any relationship. This could be father and son, Uncle and nephew, or two men not related at all. Upon the death of the "Senior" the junior could be dropped or if another, younger person had the same name, Junior became Senior, etc. Natural Son or Natural Daughter: indicates a blood relationship as distinguished from a relationship by marriage or adoption. Sometimes it could denote an illegitimate child, though it was more common to refer to such as "my base son" or "my bastard son". In some instances, "my natural child" may indicate children by a first wife as opposed to children by a current wife. Aliases: This term could mean one of several things. An orphan may have used his stepfather's surname in addition to his own. A married man may have taken the surname of his wealthy father-in-law. One son in a family may have taken his mother's maiden name, especially when inheriting property from her family. One branch of the family may have used an alias to distinguish it from other branches in the area where the name was common. A person may have used an alias to distinguish himself from several uncles and cousins with the same name. This problem was not unusual in large families before the use of middle names adopted. In some cases, an alias indicated illegitimacy. Because of all the possible reasons for the use of an alias, do not assume the reason until you have done further research. Given Names: Although you cannot count on it, it was common for the two eldest sons to be named for their grandfathers and two eldest daughters to be named for their grandmothers. Don't be confused by finding two children with the same given name in the same family. The name of a deceased child may have been given to a subsequent child. IN GERMAN ANCESTRY it was common for ALL sons to have the first name Johann and all daughters to have the first name Anna or Maria. The children were known by their second names.

Children of Benjamin & Anna PAGE (E-7) (continued) E-7-2 Frances PAGE She was b. 23 Jul 1775 and bp'd 20 Aug 1775 in Goochland Co., VA.(1). She may have been the Frances PAGE who md. Reuben THURSTON in Goochland Co. on 21 Nov 1811.(2) The Goochland Co., VA land records have been searched and no deeds exist through 1839 for Reuben and Frances THURSTON. The 1810-1830 Censuses of Goochland Co., VA are negative for any Reuben THURSTONs. R. THURSTON is listed there in 1840, age 60-70. In that year, there was also a male age 30-40 in his household. If the R. THURSTON was the older man, he could have been this Reuben. However, there is no female of an age to be Frances in his household. The 1850 Census lists a Reubin THURSTON, age 49, with wife named Mildred, age 32. Besides seven children ages 3-12, William R. THURSTON, age 70, is in his household. This Reubin could not be Frances' husband and the latter man may have been his father. There was a Reuben THURSTON in Warren Co.,KY in the 1830 Census, but he gave his age as 40-50 which would be too young to be Frances' husband. Warren Co. borders on Logan Co., KY. This man was not listed in either the 1820 or 1840 Censuses of KY. Only the censuses for VA and KY were checked for this couple, so the possibility exists that they may have migrated elsewhere. E-7-3 Mann PAGE His birthdate is estimated as 1778-1779 in Goochland Co., VA. Mann appears first in the tax records of that county in the household of his father, Benjamin, in 1795 and he continued to be taxed with him through 1799. Then he disappears from these lists until 1803, the year of his marriage. He continued to appear in the lists through 1805 only.(3) Mann md. Polly HANCOCK, dau. of Major HANCOCK and his wife Mary MORELAND on 8 Sep 1803.(4) Mary MORELAND was the dau. of Wright MORELAND and Ann WILSON. The 1810 Census Indexes of VA show two Mann PAGEs, one in Gloucester Co. and the other in Hanover Co., but both belong to the so-called "Prominent PAGE Family" of VA and not to this family. Just where this Mann PAGE lived that year is not known at this time I've the tax records of many of the VA counties without finding him. He may have been taxed under another person's name as only the names beginning with "P" have been checked in the counties other than Goochland. By the 1820 Census, Mann and his family were living in Powhatan Co., VA and he was in Cumberland Co., VA by 1830. Mrs. Ann Kyle has reported his death date as 1833. Mann and Polly (HANCOCK) PAGE had only two children, both sons:(5) E-7-3-1 Robert Thomas PAGE, b. 25 Jun 1808, d. Dec 1886 in Cumberland Co., VA. He md. Amanda COOKE, dau. of Stephen COOKE and Mary Marshall BOOKER, on 21 Dec 1835 in Cumberland Co., VA. Robert and Amanda had five children, three of whom died without issue.(5) E-7-3-2 Henry PAGE - b. ca. 1810-1820 - he may have been the Henry PAGE who md. Aurilla, dau. of Alfred YARRINGTON on 19 Dec 1827. Henry is said to have gone to Texas and was never heard from again.(5) E-7-4 Benjamin PAGE Benjamin's birthdate has been estimated as ca. 1781-1783. He was first taxed in his father's household in 1803 and was also with him in 1804. By 1805, he was in his own household. His death date is unknown, but the last year that he appears in the Personal Property Taxes of Hanover Co., VA is 1845.(6) He was md. to Martha ("Patsy"), dau. of William HODGES on 5 Dec 1805 in Goochland Co..(7) Benjamin PAGE was shown in the tax lists of Goochland Co. as Benjamin PAGE, Jr. through 1820; but, after that, only his father appears in these lists. Benjamin, Jr. then appears in the censuses and tax lists of Hanover Co., VA through 1845.(8) Benjamin PAGE, Jr. is said to have been known as "Big Ben the Boatman". He is said to have served in the War of 1812 and to have spent some time in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.(9) Mrs. Kyle has also reported that he md. 2) Mary, dau. of John A. TIBBS on 29 May 1833. Just how many children Benjamin had and by which wife is a bit confusing as it appears that there may be people listed in his family in the various censuses who were not his children and he was apparently dead when the 1850 Census was taken, so we cannot tell which of the Hanover Co., VA PAGE people belonged to his family. Several children have been reported for Benjamin PAGE, Jr.. NOTES (1) Douglas: 264. (2) Williams: 98. The marriage bond, dated 9 Nov 1811, stated that Frances was 21 years of age (which only meant that she was at least that age). The "surety" for the bond was William R. Thurston and they were md. by Rev. Lewis Chaudoin. (3) Rutherford-Pers. Prop. Taxes: 7-12. (4) Williams: 70. The marriage bond was filed 3 Sep 1803 with Major Hancock, Jr. as the "surety". Major was Polly's brother who had md. Mary PAGE (E-6-3). Mann PAGE and Polly HANCOCK were md. by Rev. Lewis CHAUDOIN. (5) Information on this family was shared by Mrs. Harold P. (Ann) Kyle of Roanoke, VA who is a descendant of Mann's son, Robert Thomas PAGE. The "surety" on the marriage bond for Robert and Amanda was James E. COOKE. Mrs. Kyle did not state the place of marriage. (6) Hanover Co., VA Personal Property Taxes read at the VA State Library and Archives in Richmond, VA. (7) Williams: 69. The marriage bond was dated 4 Dec 1805 and the "surety" was Lewis PAGE (E-4-7). They were md. by Rev. Lewis CHAUDOIN. (8) Hanover Co., VA Personal Property Tax Lists read by DCR. (9) Information received in 1981 by Mrs. Ann Kyle of Roanoke, VA from Dr. Ernest B. Page, Sr. of Raleigh, NC (then 95 years of age). (next - Children of Benjamin and Ann PAGE continued)

In 1770 Robert Page purchased from Hezekiah Inman four hundred acres on Taylor's Creek, near the border of what is now Nelson. His children were James, William, Robert, George, Samuel, Nicholas, Jane, the wife of Burgess Griffin, Mary, the wife of Sherrard Griffin, and Elizabeth, the wife of Peter Davis, of Hanover. All of these emigrated to Adair County, Kentucky, except William, and Nicholas, who died in 1817. In 1829 Nicholas M. Page, son of the younger Robert, returned to Albemarle, where for some years he prosecuted business as a merchant in Batesville, and achieved the notable task of administering the great estate of Samuel Miller. He was a magistrate under the old regime, having been appointed in 1841. He still lives, a venerable memorial of a former generation. A William Page was the owner of land below Milton, and of Lot Forty in Charlottesville, in the early part of the century. When he sold the lot in 1815, he was described as a citizen of Nelson. He may have been the William mentioned above. Dr. Mann Page, son of Major Carter Page, of Cumberland, came to the county about 1815. In that year he was united in marriage to Jane Frances, daughter of Francis Walker. His home was at Turkey Hill, a part of the Castle Hill place, which his wife inherited from her father. Dr. Page was appointed a magistrate of the county in 1824, and died in 1850. His children were Maria, Ella, Jane, Charlotte, William, Francis W., Carter H., Frederick W., Mann, Thomas W., and Dr. R. Channing, of New York.
Benjamin PAGE (son of Exolheath PAGE) (E-7) Benjamin Page's birthdate is estimated as 1749-1750 as he was first taxed with Exolheath Page, his father, in 1766.(1) He md. Anna WRIGHT. His marriage was entered into the Douglas Register as "Ben: Page" and occurred on 3 Dec 1771 in Goochland Co..(2) He evidently suffered some losses to the British during the Revolution- ary War when Cornwallis was in VA in 1781 as evidenced by the following records. "Property taken by the british and Refugee under the Command of Lord Cornwallis June 1781" showed that Benjamin was later reimbursed for the following items: "One mare 3 Years four feet 6 inches 10.0.0 1 Saddle & bridle 2.0.0 Some Swoap 6 lb 0.6.4 12 Candles 0.1.3 4 or 5 fowles 0.2.6 Total 12.9.9"(3) (tisk-tisk on their addition!) Another record of "British Depredations in Goochland County" shows that Benjn. Page put in a claim for damages of £12.9.6 at a court held in Goochland Co. "for Ascertaining the losses of the inhabit- ants of sd. County by the British Army under Comm'd of Earl Cornwallis, Sept 27th 1782".(4) Also, in Mar 1784, he was paid for 1½ bushels of wheat that he supplied to our Rev. War troops (the amount and date it was paid was not given).(5) These two records would automatically entitle any descendant to join the Daughters (or Sons) of the American Revolution. The Tithable Lists, taken before 1782, do not list any land for him, but these lists show the amount of land owned only in 1771 and 1777 and he was not listed with any these years. The Land Tax Lists began in 1782 and he is shown with 100 acres of land from that year forward.(6) Whether or not this was the same 100 acres of land that he purchased in 1786 from William WRIGHT is difficult to ascertain because the tax records do not state where it was located. However, it appears quite probable that it was. The 1786 deed located that land as being on Lickinghole Creek in the northern part of the county and he lived on this land the rest of his life.(7) This land continued to be rated at 100 acres through 1796, but from 1797 onward, it was rated at 100½ acres. Benjamin evidently died intestate sometime before 20 Feb 1827 when his youngest daughter, Sophia, came into court and chose her sister's husband, Andrew Cresaw/Cresson, as her guardian.(8). 1827 is the last year that his name appears in the Land Tax Lists. In December of that year, three of his heirs deed his 100 (not 100½) acres of land to John H. BRITT. I have not searched the deeds to see if the other heirs also deeded their portion of the land to BRITT.(9) Benjamin and Anna (WRIGHT) PAGE had six children: E-7-1 William PAGE William was b. 5 Mar 1773 and bp'd 11 Apr 1773 in Gooch- land Co., VA.(10) He was also called William B. PAGE in some records. The "B" was obviously added later to show that he was the "son of Benjamin" in order to differentiate him from the other William PAGEs of approximately the same age in various records in VA and KY. He first appears in the tax records with his father in 1791 and continues being with him through 1793 and is on his own from 1794 to 1817. (11) The bond for his marriage to Nancy PAGE, dau. of John PAGE (E-4) and Edith CAUTHO(R)N, was filed on 15 Dec 1794 in Goochland Co., VA.(12) They were probably md. a short time later. Nancy's father, John PAGE, died testate in 1804 and his land (50 acres in the northwestern part of the county) was conveyed to William in 1807 by Leonard PAGE, the executor of his father's estate. (E-4-1).(13) The deed described this land as being on the branches of Lickinghole Creek bordering the lands of Wm. Hodges, Wm. James, Tarlton Lane and James Holman. The tax lists show that William lived in the "Upper District" of Goochland Co.. From 1806 onward through 1814, William is charged with the tax on this 50 acres which, in the Land Tax records is said to be on Stoney Creek adjoining the lands of Bouth Woodson, Wm. James and others at Cross Roads. Despite the difference in the description of this land, it appears to be the same land that William purchased from the estate of John PAGE in 1807.(14) William evidently hit some hard times and possibly some illness(es) in the family as twice he had to mortgage his land for debts owed to others....one to Dr. John MORGAN. He must have redeemed the land, however, as he and Nancy deeded it to John TYLER in November of 1814 and then left VA for Logan Co., KY where some of his cousins and his wife's relatives had already settled three years before.(15) There, he was known as William B. PAGE, probably to differentiate him from the other William PAGE men there. He first appears in the Logan Co., KY tax lists in 1815, but was not taxed on any land there through 1823. In Logan Co., KY, William was taxed on 86 acres of land on Mud River in 1824 and 1825 although no deed to him for this land was found in the Logan Co. records.(16) Neither did this land pass down to any of his children. He may have been leasing it to purchase at a later date and then died before it was paid for. William died in 1826 in Logan Co., KY, but no will or other probate record has been found for him. Nancy died two years later, in 1828. They had eight children: John J. PAGE, Benjamin PAGE, Sally PAGE, William R. PAGE, James PAGE, Nancy PAGE, Jesse A. PAGE and Robert L. PAGE.(17) NOTES (1) Rutherford-Tithables: 5-8. Although Benjamin is not listed by name, this conclusion was made by eliminating the other sons of Exolheath from this year's taxes. The other male with Exolheath had to have been Benjamin as he is also with Exolheath in the 1767 through 1769 and in 1771. He was married later in 1771 and appears in these lists in his own household from 1772 onward. (2) Douglas: 37. Anna's father has was given as William WRIGHT in this record. (3) The Virginia Genealogist, Vol. 30, Number 4 (Oct-Dec, 1986): 285. This is from the article "British Depredations in Goochland County, 1781" by Robert Y. Clay, Richmond, VA. The parts in quotes were copied exactly as they were origially written. The word "british" was not capitalized. Although, not given, this amount was no doubt in English Pounds (£). These heirs were Benjamin Page & wf. Martha, Mann Page & wf. Mary and Anner Cressaw(?)/Cresson and her husband Andrew. I found no deeds whereby the other heirs disposed of their portions of the 100 acres through 1832. We know that William, the eldest son, had died in 1826 in Logan Co., KY, so probably would not share in the estate. (10) Douglas: 264. (11) Rutherford-Pers. Prop.: 5-19. In these lists, he is referred to as William PAGE, Wm. PAGE, Wm. PAGE of Ben, Wm. PAGE of Benjamin, William PAGE son of Benjamin, Wm. Page of Benja., Wm. PAGE of (B.), Wm. PAGE (of Ben), Wm. PAGE (of B.) and Will PAGE (of Ben). (12) Williams: 70. The marriage bond stated that Nancy was the dau. of John PAGE (E-4). The "surety" was "David Sanders 'or David Saunders'" and the "witness" was Stephen Lane (Layne). The marriage date was not given. David Saunders was the husband of Nancy's sister, Betsy (E-4-3). (13) Rutherford-Deeds: 20. (Goochland Co., VA Deed Bk. 19, p. 490) (14) Rutherford-Land Tax: 6-14. An entry in the Land Tax Lists of 1806 states the following: "Jno. Page, dec'd (conv'd to Wm. Page by his exec'rs) - 50 acres". Although the deed books were read from 1728- 1832, no deed was found for this transfer. The Goochland Co. Ct. Order Books were read for 1728-1805 and 1825-1836 only. Perhaps there was an entry in the Ct. Order Book that covered 1806 which might show that this deed existed. (15) Rutherford-Deeds: 23.
