    1. [PAGE-L] Thomas Page/Sarah Coat/NJ/MA
    2. I am at such a deadend. My family notes say Thomas Page b. 13 Sep 1772 ( and where do you suppose such an exact date came from?) m. Sarah Coat b. 30 Jan 1774 and their first four children: John, Ashiel, Abner and Daniel were born in Burlington,NJ. Now I have found no record at all. And, I cannot get to study Quaker records until I retire and can get to a good, good library. BUT, Son John named his son Ashiel, Ooops, on grave stone it is Asahel. Now I have discovered that in Mass. there are tons and tons of Thomas Pages, and I even found an Asahel. So maybe my Thomas came from NJ after coming from MA? I found on the web a Francis Page b. 1724 marrying Mary Marston who named one son Asahel. But no Thomas in their Line. Dorothy

    1. [PAGE-L] Benjamin PAGE (c.1766-1860)
    2. Hello all! I've seen some new people on the list, so I thought I might post my PAGE ancestor again in search of cousins or information. I'd like to write to you today, as I may have before, about my PAGE ancestor. He is a mystery man, one of which my cousin has been in search of for over 15 years. He married an American United Empire Loyalist whose family was living in Quebec. These were displaced Americans after the Revolutionary War who were loyal to the King in England. This PAGE ancestor lived to be 94. A book is almost complete that is a register of over 1000 known descendants, but prior to his marriage in the autumn of 1803, he cannot be found anywhere. Perhaps you can help me today. My 5-great-grandfather's name was Benjamin PAGE. He was reportedly born in 1766 in one of the thirteen British American Colonies [s1]. He was married to Elizabeth HIBBARD on SEP 12 1803 in Sorel, Quebec, Lower Canada [s4]. He was 37, she was 20. She had been born on APR 8 1783 in Royalton, Republic of Vermont [s5]. Benjamin was a farmer. Benjamin and Elizabeth had 8 children in the Louiseville and St-Gabriel-de-Brandon area of Quebec. The first in 1805 was Mary PAGE. The next year Polly PAGE was born. Then my 4-gr-grandfather, Timothy Hibbard PAGE, named after his maternal grandfather. The next two were Jerusha and John Phillip PAGE. The next girl has an odd middle name, Elizabeth Annis PAGE. And the last two children were Joseph and Malvina Rebecca PAGE. Benjamin PAGE died at 94 on NOV 3 1860 in St-Gabriel-de-Brandon, Quebec, Canada East [s2]. He was buried with his wife in the Old English Cemetery in Lac Maskinonge in Quebec [s3]. Several of his children and in-laws are also buried in this small piece of land; reserved for the Anglicans in a French-Catolic land. A monument was erected and dedicated in 1927 on this cemetery land to honor the Loyalists helped who build the Maskinonge settlement. A plaque lists all people believed to be in the cemetery. Benjamin's name is there and his remains are believed to have rested there for the past 137 years. There are no remaining headstones or markers in this cemetery. Sources: s1 - 1851 Quebec Census. s2 - Subject's death record. St-Gabriel-de-Brandon, PQ, Canada. s3 - Lake Maskinonge Cemetery Monument. St-Gabriel-de-Brandon. s4 - Marriage Ledger. Sorel, PQ, Canada. s5 - Anglican Church Records. Louiseville, PQ, Canada. So who was Benjamin PAGE? Where did he come from? Was he perhaps from New York Colony? Or perhaps from elsewhere? Who were his parents? At age 37 he suddenly appears in Quebec in September 1803 to marry an english girl 17 years his younger. I hope that you may be able to shed any information on my mystery man, my 5-great-grandfather---> Benjamin PAGE (1766-1860). Thank you. ROGER A. CHATELL West Warwick, RI s02916@grog.ric.edu

    3. Children of Robert & Rachel (Brockman) PAGE (E-9) Robert and Rachel (Brockman) PAGE had ten children, none of whom were baptized by the Rev. William DOUGLAS in Goochland Co., VA which further adds credence to the supposition that they did not live in that county after their marriage. The birthdates given here for their children comes from the book on this family by Donald W. Page, referred to in the previous post. Therefore, no NOTE will be given here for each of these birthdates. Those interested in this family can contact Merritt L. Page, Donald W. Page or Pansy PAGE Allison, all of whom have done a great deal of research on this family. Much of the early research on this line was done by Merritt L. Page of Green City, MO who, by sharing his findings freely with all who wanted it, has paved the way for the rest of us. E-9-1 John PAGE He was said to have been b. 26 Mar 1777 and it must have been somewhere in VA. He died of blood poisoning on 28 May 1819 in Cumberland Co., KY. He md. Dorcas SMITH, dau. of Fleming SMITH and Prudence BLAND, in Spartanburg Co., NC on 27 Mar 1796.(1) According to this date, he was md. one day after his 19th birthday. In John and family migrated to the part of Cumberland Co., KY that, in 1820, became part of present-day Monroe Co. where, in 1798, he had received a land grant from the State of KY for 300 acres on Meshack Creek.(2) John and Dorcas had eight children, the first three of whom were born in SC and the rest in KY. Since I have done no personal research on this family, I will not list them here, but will leave that up to those who descend from this couple to do. E-9-2 Joel PAGE Joel was b. 25 Jan 1779 probably in VA and d. in Hamilton Co., IL sometime between 1833 and 1838. He md. Rebecca MOORE, dau. of Jeremiah MOORE,in SC. She was born 25 Jul 1785 and died sometime between 1840 and 1850 in IL. Both are buried in the Middlefork Cemetery near Ewing, Franklin Co., IL. This family migrated first to Barren Co., KY in 1805, then went to Franklin Co., IL ca. 1817-1818 where they were enumerated in the 1820 Census. By 1830, they were in Hamilton Co., IL. Rebecca was listed in her own household in the the 1840 Census of Franklin Co., IL. This couple had thirteen children, all included in Donald W. Page's book.(3) E-9-3 James Nelson PAGE James was b. 10 Jan 1781 (probably in VA) and d. in 1856. He md. Rachel SMITH, dau. of Charles SMITH and Catharine RHODES. James was a soldier in the War of 1812. This couple stayed in Spartanburg Co., SC. They had eight children.(4) E-9-4 Jesse PAGE Jesse was b. ca. 1783 in NC and d. before 1860 in Clark Co., IL. He md. Mary ("Polly"), dau. of John ARNOLD and Annie BRYANT in 13 Oct 1810 in Logan Co., KY. This couple later migrated to Crawford and Clark Cos., IL. They had eight children.(5) E-9-5 Robert PAGE, Jr. Robert was b. 6 Sep 1784 prob. in NC, d. 19 Feb 1862 in Hamilton Co., IL where he had migrated after the death of his father. He was a twin....the other twin being Rachel PAGE covered next. He md. Elizabeth, dau. of Charles SMITH and Catharine RHODES, and sister of the wife of Robert's brother James Nelson PAGE. This couple had six children.(6) E-9-6 Rachel PAGE Rachel was the twin of the previous Robert PAGE, b. 6 Sep 1784 prob. in NC. She md. William HORNBUCKLE and they had one child, Rhodia HORNBUCKLE, who never md.. Rachel was evidently separated from her husband when her father died as he mentioned this in his will. She lived part of the time with her brother, James.(7) E-9-7 Christian PAGE She was b. in 1789 in SC and d. ca. 1855 there. She was evidently named for her grandmother and was said to be crippled from birth and never md..(8) E-9-8 William PAGE He was b. 1 May 1790 in SC and d. 17 Mar 1869 there. He was twice md., first on 17 Nov 1811 to Anna SMITH, another dau. of Charles and Catharine (RHODES) SMITH and second to Milly WELLS in 1857. He had thirteen children, all by his first wife.(9) E-9-9 Elizabeth ("Betsy") PAGE Betsy was b. in 1791 in SC. Very little is known about her except that she married Major HANCOCK, Jr. as his second wife. Major was md. first to Mary PAGE (E-6-3), dau. of James PAGE (E-6) and his wife Mary ENGLAND. See Part #18 for information on Major HANCOCK, Jr.. Major and "Betsy" (PAGE) HANCOCK, Jr. had only one child: Matilda ("Tillie") HANCOCK who md. Mansell LAWSON.(10) E-9-10 Mary PAGE She was b. in 1799 in SC and died sometime after 1870 there. She md. James Lewis LANFORD, Jr. and they had four children, three girls and a boy.(11) NOTES (1) "We're 'Kin to Them" by Pansy Page Allison, 1988(?), published privately by the author: 4. This is a delightful book of the descendants of John and Dorcas (Smith) Page with family pictures, documents, a map of Monroe Co. and wonderful family and other stories that are a joy to read even if you aren't a member of this family. The stories make early life, customs and happenings in that part of the country come alive. They certainly have filled me in on a way of life that I would never have known if Pansy hadn't written this book. Her book has gives us an insight about our KY ancestors....something that would be difficult to obtain otherwise. This book will henceforth be referred to here as "Allison". (2) Allison: 4. 1. [PAGE-L] Re: Mahana Elizabeth Page
    2. Need information on Mahana Elizabeth Page who was marrried 21, December 1847 in Union Co., Georgia to George W. Alford. The 1850 census shows that she was born in Georgia and at that time 27 years old. There are a great number of Page families listed in Georgia. Any information is greatly appreciated. Donna

    1. [PAGE-L] More on biological search
    2. To clarify for some that I do not have an exact name for my biological father, don't have his birth date, and I do not live near his "supposed" home town. With so little tid-bits, unless someone he knows would remember through conversation his military experiences in the 1950's, I may be fighting a loosing battle before the first shot is fired? :-( Steven Page

    1. [PAGE-L] Finding Biological Father
    2. This may seem to some a topic off the subject line but to me it still falls within the catagory of finding missing ancestors. In this case, my biological father I never met. How does one even begin? Several years ago I ordered one of those "National Locator" books at a cost of $200. that was filled with forms available at any library and tapes coveing mainly adoption issues. I am not a lost child of adoption but seek my father in which my mother never married. I have very little to go on and mother either can't or don't want to remember the details. All i have is that he was supposed to have been a Staff Sgt. in the Army stationed at Ft. Eustis, VA around October, 1956. He said he was from Mt. Vernon, IL and would have been born around 1920. He took off for Japan in 1957 leaving my mother pregnant with me and supposedly married her best friend instead. All I have is that I look exactly like him and his name was Bill (could be William) Hoffster, Hoffstetler, Hofsteter, or any variable common to that German surname in Illinois. To say the least, i have been working on my family tree for nearly 20 years now but all of it has been from mother or grandparent on my mother's side or my step-father's family. There is a very BIG void deep inside when it comes to my natural father and didn't realize how important it was until I had a heart attack scare this Monday and the doctors asked about his medical history. What was there to tell?? If anyone has any idea where or how to start this search using what little info i have to go on, please let me know! I am NOT out for any personal gains other than to fill the void, and know I do have a father like other people. Steven Page

    3. Robert PAGE (son of Exolheath PAGE) (E-9) Robert is placed here as a probable son of Exolheath PAGE by process of elimination from the families of the other PAGE men in Goochland Co. at the same time. Here is my reasoning for this placement. The only other PAGE men in this county in time to be Robert's father were: John PAGE who md. Hannah - this John had no son named Robert and he and his family (including his grown children) had left Goochland Co. when this Robert was still here and living with Exolheath PAGE. Robert PAGE who md. 2) Winnifred PATTY - Robert had only one son---William PAGE. There was a Robert PAGE, Jr. mentioned in this older Robert's estate records as owing his estate, but I believe this Robert, Jr. was not his son. He has not been placed as yet, but he was the same age as the Robert, son of Exolheath PAGE. I have revised my original estimate of the date of Robert's birth- date as being more like after June 1753 to before June 1754 probably in Goochland Co., VA. This revised birthdate for Robert comes from the fact that he does not appear in these tax lists before 1770 in a time when young men were considered taxable or "tithables" when they reached the age of 16. If his birthdate was ca. 1750-51, one would expect to find Robert in these lists from ca. 1766-1767 onward. The Goochland Co. tax records show Robert in Exolheath's household first in 1770 and he continues to be listed there through 1773, the year of his marriage. He could have reached age 16 sometime after the 1769 tax lists were taken or just before the 1770 tax lists were taken which was 10 June for those years. He is not in these lists before 1770 or from 1774 onward. There was a Ro. PAGE, Jun'r and a James PAGE listed in the household of Robert PAGE (R) in the 1767 tax list. However, I do not believe that this Ro. PAGE, Jun'r is the Robert PAGE that we are discussing here. Robert PAGE, Ju'r was still taxed with Robert PAGE (R) in 1770 when the Robert PAGE of this write-up was first taxed with Exolheath PAGE. I believe that the Ro. PAGE, Jun'r and James PAGE mentioned here were the ones who later md. the WELBURN/WILBURN girls (see Parts #7 and #8 of this series). NOTE: If the foregoing three Robert PAGEs are confusing to anyone, Join the Club. It's easy to get confused with the same names occurring over and over again in these PAGE families. Hopefully, the future postings for Robert PAGE (R), Robert PAGE (Jr. or younger) and James PAGE will clear it up. The last two men married the WELBURN/WILBURN girls. I can't think of any other way to explain why I am now considering this later birthdate for this Robert PAGE. On 26 Dec 1773, the Robert PAGE of this posting md. Rachel BROCKMAN in Goochland Co., VA.(2) Rachel's father, John BROCKMAN, had died in Orange Co., VA and her mother, Mary (Collins), and her new husband, Kell(e)y JENNINGS had moved to Goochland Co.. JENNINGS had died earlier in 1773. His will was made on 7 Jun 1770 and probated 15 Feb 1773 in Goochland Co.. He did not name any of his BROCKMAN step-children in it. He named his wife Mary, his sons Caleb and Joshua and a dau. Mary.(3) This information is pertinent to this family in light of later migra- tions. Kelley JENNINGS left his land in Goochland Co. to his sons. and both of them later sold this land and moved to Caswell Co., NC.(4) The reason why Robert cannot be found in the Goochland Co., VA tax records after 1774 is no doubt because he may have been in one of the counties where Rachel's BROCKMAN relatives lived---Louisa or Orange Cos.. The tax records found for these two counties begin in 1782 and both are negative for Robert PAGE for the years that they could be there and it appears that they left Goochland Co. soon after their marriage. Robert was in Orange Co. at least in 1780 when he purhased 107 acres of land in Albemarle Co.. In this deed, he is said to be "of Orange County".(5) Whether or not they ever lived on this land is not known because the Land Tax records for those years are not available and the Personal Property Tax List of 1782 of Albemarle Co. would not show this Robert PAGE because he left in Jan before it was taken. There is a Robert PAGE there that year, but he is definitely not this one. When Robert and Rachel sold this land in Jan 1782, they were said to be "moveing".(6) Evidently, they went to Caswell Co., NC this year. The date of 1782 fits in well with Donald PAGE's finding of Robert PAGE in the tax records of Caswell Co., NC in that same year. That he would be found there is natural because Rachel's youngest brother, Major BROCKMAN and the JENNINGS boys were there and they had family to live with while getting settled. Some of the other PAGE men also there may have been relatives of Robert's although some of them are known to be of a different PAGE lineage. At any rate, the tax records of Caswell Co., NC show that Robert was there at least through 1785.(7) By 1787, Robert is in Spartanburg Co., SC. I will not go into the records of him there as these are covered in Mr. Page's book. Robert died in 1827 leaving a will naming his children. However, Rachel's death date is unknown. Robert and Rachel and their descendants were first researched by Merritt L. Page of Green City, MO who has spent many years working on this family and he has so generously shared his material with so many of us over the years. His research has been augmented recently by that of Donald W. Page of Titusville, FL who has written an excellent book on them....and is soon coming out with another volume on this family. I recommend that those who descend from this couple contact either of these men for more answers than I can give on this particular branch of the Goochland Co. PAGE families. Another fine book was written by Pansy Page Allison in the 1980's on one branch of this family and will be referred to in the next posting. Robert and Rachel PAGE had ten children. They will be listed in Part #26. NOTES (1) Rutherford-Pers. Prop. Taxes: 7-8. (2) Douglas: 37. (3) Goochland Co., VA Deed Bk. 10, p. 294-295. (4) Caleb JINNINGS (as it was spelled in the record) sold his part of the land to Archelus JARROTT, Sen'r of Goochland Co. in Sep 1783 and Joshua JINNINGS sold his part to the same man in Mar 1786. Caleb was said to be of Caswell Co., NC and Joshua was said to be of NC. The land was described as 140 acres "or Rather supposed to be 100 1/2 acres" bordering the lands of Dabney WADE, George RICHARDSON, Colo. COCKE and John LEE. Joshua's deed states that "Kelle Jennings dec'd" (deceased) purchased the land from Colo. John HOPKINS, but gives not date and I have not looked for this deed. (Deed Bk. 13, p. 343-345 for both deeds) (5) Albemarle Co., VA Deed Bk. 13, p. 196-197. Robert GRINNING and wife, Sarah to Robert PAGE. This deed was dated 27 Mar 1780, but not recorded until April, 1799. Robert, as grantee in this deed, is described as being "of Orange Co.", VA. This land is described as bordering the lands of Richard DOWEL, Peter FERGUSON and Ambrose DOWEL. The wits. to the deed were John SMITH, Thos. DICKINSON and Thos. JONES. Oddly enough, this grantee deed appears in a later deed book than the deed whereby Robert and Rachel sell this land. (see NOTE #6 herewith) (6) Albemarle Co., VA Deed Bk. 8, p. 6-7. Robert PAGE & wf. Rachel of Orange Co. (State not given, but it was VA) to Peter FERGUSON. The land must have been re-surveyed as it was now said to contain 100 acres and bordered the lands of John and Richard DOWEL, Peter FERGUSON and "the blaze". Robert and Rachel were said to be "moving". Wits. to the deed were Wm. BROCKMAN, Lawrence FERGUSON and William BROCKMAN, Juner (Jr.). The deed was made 18 Jan 1782 and recorded on 8 Aug 1782. Both Robert and Rachel signed with a mark (+). From this and the previous deed, it would lead one to think that Robert & Rachel were living in Albemarle Co., VA from 1780 to early 1780. 3. Mary PAGE, dau. of Exolheath PAGE (E-8?) Mary PAGE is tentatively placed in the family of Exolheath PAGE (E) by process of elimination from the other families who were in this county at the same time....fully realizing that she could have been a daughter of the Jacob PAGE (covered in Part #6 of this treatise) who died in Goochland Co. in 1761. My reasoning for placing her in this family, rather in the families of the two other early Goochland Co. PAGE families is as follows: Robert PAGE (R) had a dau. named Mary Ann, but she was older than this Mary and is known to have md. Joseph PACE in 1762 in Goochland Co..(1) John PAGE (J) evidently did not have a dau. named Mary. Besides, he and the rest of his family were gone from Goochland Co. when this Mary PAGE married in 1773. Mary's brother, Robert PAGE (E-9), md. Rachel BROCKMAN, sister of the Joseph BROCKMAN who md. this Mary PAGE....hinting that Robert and Mary may be brother and sister....a slim argument to be sure, but worth consideration in the matter. Mary's birthdate is estimated from her marriage date and it appears that she was probably born ca. 1750-53 before Rev. William Douglas began keeping his records. She was md. to Joseph BROCKMAN in Goochland Co., VA on 15 Apr 1773.(2) She died sometime before Sep 1821 when her husband applied for a Rev. War Pension. (see information to follow) Joseph BROCKMAN was born in Orange Co., VA ca. 1743 and was the son of John BROCKMAN and Mary COLLINS. He was the brother of the Rachel BROCKMAN who md. Robert PAGE (E-9).(3) His father, John BROCKMAN, died when Joseph was relatively young and his mother, Mary (COLLINS) BROCKMAN, md. 2) Kelly JENNINGS whose will was proved in Goochland Co. in 1773.(4) On 24 Nov 1758, Kelly JENNINGS was chosen by the eldest of John BROCKMAN's children as their guardian and the court appointed him guardian of the other children, including Joseph.(5) In 1759, Joseph was old enough to choose his own guardian and Samuel BROCKMAN was appointed his guardian.(6) Joseph was left his father's portion of 150 acres of land in Orange Co., part of which he transferred to his cousin, Samuel BROCKMAN, Jr., in 1772.(7) In 1774, he received land from William BROCKMAN.(8) In 1787, Joseph and his wife Mary (PAGE) sold another 60 acres of land to James Fitzgarrell.(9) Just where Joseph and Mary (PAGE) BROCKMAN lived in their early married years is not known to me. They could have lived in Orange Co. where he owned some land or in Louisa or Goochland Co. with one of their relatives. Joseph does not appear in the Tithable Lists of Goochland Co. which cover through 1781. He was listed in his own household in the Goochland Co. Personal Property Tax Lists in 1782, but not after that.(10) From 1786 onward, they lived in Albemarle Co. in Fredericks- ville Parish near Joseph's brother, William BROCKMAN. Joseph appears in the Personal Property Tax Lists there sporadically from 1786 onward until his death.(11) On 3 Sep 1821, he applied for a pension for his service in the Rev. War giving his age as 78 that year and stating that he served for 18 months as a Private under "Capt. Sudimon in the Regt. commanded by Col. Davis and 2ndly in the Company Commanded by Capt. William Price in the Regiment Commanded by Colo. Mulenburg (Muhlenberg)" and continued to serve until the expiration of his term and he was discharged in Powhatan Co., VA. He also stated that he was in no battle during his service. Furthermore, he gave his occupation as "coarse Shoemaker" and said that he was unable to pursue his work "owing to his infirmity and a stroke of the palsey in the right arm". He also stated that he had "no wife or child living with him" at the time of his application which he signed with a mark (+). He was granted a pension of $96 a year on 9 Jan 1822.(12) He is said to have died in 1834 at the age of 91.(13) So, from this, we can assume that Joseph's wife Mary was dead by Sep 1821. Joseph and Mary are said to have had at least three children: E-8-1(?) Robert BROCKMAN, b. 8 Jul 1775 E-8-2(?) Joseph BROCKMAN, Jr. (21 in 1804 per tax list) E-8-3(?) James BROCKMAN - md. Nancy HARRIS on 18 Dec 1805 (14) Robert may have been the Robert BROCKMAN "miller" in the Albemarle Co. tax lists. James may have been the one of that name shown as "James BROCKMAN, W.S." and "James BROCKMAN (W son)" in the tax records rather than the son of this Joseph.(15) However, no son named James has been in the listing of the children of Joseph's brother William who also lived in Albemarle Co.. I'd like to add the "possibility" that the following person also belongs in this family: E-8-4(?) Nancy BROCKMAN md. Moddeque SHIFLETT on 27 Dec 1811. (16) There are persons who descend from the BROCKMAN family who have much more information than I. Hopefully, someone will come forth with more records on this family. 3. Children of James PAGE (E-6-2-1) (continued) James PAGE's 2nd wife's name was Sarah, but her last name is unknown at this time. A Sarah PAGE died in Monroe Co. on 29 Sep 1857 of dropsy at age 50. Her date of death might fit in well with James' 2nd wife's death, but the age does not. The Sarah who died in 1857 was said to have been born in Logan Co., KY, the dau. of S. & H. BOYER.(1) James' wife, Sally, gave her age as 48 in the 1850 Census of Monroe Co., KY and she was evidently dead when the 1860 Census was taken. She and James had four children: (indented here to correspond with the same indentations made inprevious posts for this generation) E-6-2-1-6 Malinda PAGE, b. ca. 1834, d. ? - md. a man named HARPER, but I don't know his first name. He was no doubt related to the HARPER family given under E-6-2-1-1. E-6-2-1-7 James Allen S. PAGE, b. ca. 1835-1838, d. 3 Nov 1894 in Monroe Co., KY - md. Sarah J. HENSLEY. This couple had eleven children.(2) E-6-2-1-8 Nancy M. PAGE, b. ca. 1840, d. Jan 1870. She md. Francis M. HARPER, son of Fleming B. HARPER. (also see E-6-2-1-1 in Part #17-S-1) The 1860 Census of Monroe Co., KY shows them as follows: p. 167: Dwelling #1179, Family #1194 (taken 31 Jul) Jas. PAGE, age 66, b. VA Martha " , " 32, " KY Same Dwelling, Family #1195: F. M. HARPER, age 22, b. VA (male) N. M. " , " 19, " KY (female) M. J. " , " 1, " " (female) W. M. PAGE, " 17, " " (male)(3) The HARPER family was evidently living in the same dwelling as Nancy's father and unmarried sister, Martha, this year. W. M. PAGE was Nancy's brother, William M. PAGE. Nancy is said to have died in Jan 1870 in MO, but it is obvious that her husband was living in Hart Co. when the census of that county was taken in that year. Either she died in MO and Francis brought the family back to KY or she died in KY. Perhaps the mortality schedule of the 1870 Census would clear that up. 1870 Census Hart Co., KY p. 254: Dwelling & Family #189 (taken 13 Jun) F. M. HARPER, age 32, b. KY Martha J. " , " 11, " " Sallie " , " 9, " " Julian " , " 8, " " (female) William " , " 6, " " Fleming " , " 4, " " Francis M. ", " 2, " " Martha PAGE, " 45, " "(4) By Sep of 1870, Francis M. HARPER is living in Monroe Co., KY with his father and step-mother. (See information under E-6-2-1-1 in Part #17-S-1) Oddly enough, Martha PAGE has aged two years in the move from Hart to Monroe Co.! Her brother, Anderson T. PAGE (E-6-2-1-3) lived two doors away in this Hart Co., KY census. Francis Marion HARPER is reported to have later moved to MO.(5) E-6-2-1-9 William James PAGE, b. ca. 1842-1843. He was still alive in 1864 when his father made his will. James made and signed his will on 21 Oct 1857 and it was probated on 12 Sept 1864. He named his nine children and stipulated that "my four children viz. James A.S. Page, Martha Page, Nancy Page, and Wm. Page shall have $50 over and above the rest of my said children for kindness devotion and protection they have for their mother Sarah Page and aside from that devotion to share equally with my other children".(6) Martha was a daughter of the first marriage and James' 2nd wife, was not her blood mother. Martha was a very young child when her mother died; so, she may well have considered James' 2nd wife as her mother. From this statement, it is uncertain as to whether his 2nd wife, Sarah, was or was not alive when he signed his will. This statement in his will definitely said "they HAVE", not "they HAD" for their mother Sarah which could indicate that she was still alive. However, he left nothing to her and made no provision her care in his will. Perhaps she was gravely ill and not expected to live at this time. This is another indication that the Sarah BEYES/BEYER/BOYER referred to in NOTE #1 below "may have been" James' 2nd wife---that Sarah died in Sep 1857, shortly before James made and signed his will. James named Fendal Palmore and Blakey Wright as executors of his estate. Palmore filed an appraisement and list of the sales of the estate in November of 1864. Both were itemized, but not totalled. It was a long one.(7) The final account of James' estate was filed by the executors on 10 May 1866.(8) James and his 2nd wife are probably buried on the "Persimmon PAGE" family cemetery on what was his property in northeastern Monroe Co., KY. Although there are no markers for him and his wives, some of the field stones there may mark their graves. NOTES (1) Monroe Co., KY Vital Records, 1852-1860 read from Mormon Microfilm #216834. This film is described in the Mormon Locality Records as a "microreproduction of original records at the Kentucky State Historical Society and the State Archives in Lexington, Kentucky". I copied Sarah's parents' names as J. and N. BEYES, but Merritt L. Page was given their names as S. & H. BOYER by a Cumberland Co. researcher. This item was also sent to DCR in 1998 by Joellyn Page of Tompkinsville, KY who found the names of Sarah's parents as J. and N. BEYER in a book in a local library (name of book not given). As to which is correct, I do not know....and whether or not this was the 2nd wife of James PAGE is still undetermined. (2) Information on this family has been supplied by Mr. and Mrs. Dentis PAGE (Lucille) of Summer Shade, KY. Dentis is a descendant of this James A. S. PAGE. (3) Monroe Co., KY 1860 Census, Page 167 - Dwelling #1179, Family #1195 - taken 31 July. F. M. HARPER & family were a second family living in Dwelling #1179. The owner of the dwelling was Jas. 2. MATHEW A PAGE
    3. Thought this question might be fitting since tomorrow is St Patricks Day. Is anyone aware of any Page families from Ireland in the 1600/1700s. Did most Page families from Ireland migrate there from England or Scotland? And did they migrate to any specific areas in the Americas. Supposedly family tradition (per info told to my father from his grandfather) has it that my Page family line was or Irish descent. I have been UNABLE to prove this, however there appears to be several daughters of the family in the late 1700/early 1800s that married gentlemen who descended from families from Ireland (Hood, Cluxton, Newell, Knox, etc...). 3. Because I didn't discuss the children of Anderson PAGE (E-6-2), son of James PAGE (E-6) in Part #17, I would like to do so before going on with the other Goochland Co., VA PAGE families. James PAGE and his son, Anderson PAGE, are my line. The only chil- dren of James PAGE whose descendants I have been able to trace are his sons Anderson and William. I gave William's children in Part #20, but I didn't show Anderson's offspring in Part #17. Therefore, I am adding Parts #17-S-1 ("S"-Supplement), #17-S-2 and #17-S-3,so that they can be placed in the correct order in these posts. James PAGE & Family (E-6-2-1) James' birthdate is estimated from the census records as ca. 1794- 1795. He was most probably born in Goochland Co., VA as his father appears in the Personal Property Tax Lists at that time.(1) When he was a child, his parents moved first to Spartanburg Dist./Co., SC and then moved to Cumberland Co., KY sometime between 1811 and 1820. Anderson's cousin John PAGE (E-9-1), son of Robert PAGE (E-9), lived a few miles away in what later became Monroe Co., KY where he had settled a few years earlier. James was md. twice. He had five children by his first wife whose name is unknown at this time. Much research has been done to determine whether or not a marriage recorded in Cumberland Co., KY was for this James. The marriage occurred at the correct time to be him, but no proof has been found to confirm it. This marriage record is for a James PAGE who md. Sally ROICE on 11 Aug 1816 in Cumberland Co., KY(2) Because this marriage seems very likely to be for my James PAGE, I will include here the results of my research done to date on this subject. There was only one ROICE/ROYCE/ROYSE family that area of four counties (Adair, Barren/now Metcalfe, Cumberland, and Green Cos., KY who could be related to Sally ROICE of this marriage record. That was Solomon ROYSE (as the family now spells it) who lived only a short distance away from James PAGE's family on Harrod's Fork in the south- western part of Adair Co.. His wife's name was Sally and she was the dau. of John STOTTS who settled at about the same time as Solomon in the part of Green Co. that later fell into Adair Co.. I've done a great deal of research on this ROYSE line, but will not discuss it here except to say that nothing has been found to date to link it with this (my) James PAGE. As stated previously, Harrod's Fork was only a short distance from where this James PAGE lived with his parents on Mudcamp Creek on land that was in both Cumberland and Monroe Cos.---in the extreme north- western corner of Cumberland Co. and the extreme northeastern corner of Monroe Co..(3) I've visited that area of KY several times, but didn't have the time to check the distance between Harrod's Fork in Adair Co. and Mudcamp Creek in Cumberland Co. or to check to see if there was a church that both may have attended so that they could have easily met--- possibly somewhere between where each of them lived. There was only one other James PAGE in that area besides Anderson's son in 1816. However, that one has been placed in a PAGE family that came from Albemarle Co., VA and the names of his wife and children are known. Another James PAGE appeared first in the Cumberland Co., KY records in 1829 and census shows that he lived in the part of that county that fell into Clinton Co. when it was created in 1836. He died before the 1850 Census was taken, so his birthplace is unknown, but that census shows that two of his sons were born in Georgia. It seems, by process of elimination and by other circumstantial evidence, that the Cumberland Co. marriage was most probably for this (my) James....but I would like to see more concrete proof before definitely stating it. James eventually owned 200 acres of land variously described as being on Marrowbone, Mudcamp and Meshack/Maschack Creek in Monroe Co.. It was located in the northeastern corner of the county. This PAGE family was called "the Persimmon PAGEs" to differentiate them from his cousin, John PAGE's (E-9-1-1), family. The name no doubt was derived from the persimmon trees on his property. Just how James obtained this land could not be found as the Monroe Co. deed records were burned when the Confederates burned the courthouse in the Civil War. The information on his land was obtained from the Monroe Co. Tax Records.(4) James' first wife died sometime between 1830-1834. They had five children: E-6-2-1-1 Mary PAGE, b. ca. 1818, d. ? - md. Fleming B. HARPER as his 2nd wife. The 1870 Census lists Fleming B. HARPER, his wife, son and his son's family in Monroe Co., KY. 1870 Census Monroe Co., KY: (taken 17 Sep) Fleming B. HARPER, age 67, b. VA Mary " , " 53, b. KY Elizabeth H. " , " 27, " " Lucinda ?. " , " 23, " " Martha J. " , " 11, " " Sarah B. " , " 9, " " Julia A.L. " , " 7, " " William A. " , " 5, " " James F. " , " 4, " " Francis M. " , " 2, " " Martha PAGE, " 43, " " Francis M. HARPER, " 33, " "(5) The above children from Martha J. (age 11) to Francis M. (age 2) were the children of the Francis M. HARPER (age 33 in this census) and his wife, Nancy M. PAGE. Nancy was the dau. of the 2nd marriage of James PAGE (E-6-2-1) and will be discussed under her number (E-6-2-1-8) in Part #17-S-3 to follow. As far as I know, Mary (PAGE) HARPER had no children of her own, but she obviously helped to raise a number of her step-children and step- grandchildren. I could not find Fleming B. and Mary HARPER in the 1880 Census of Monroe or Hart Cos., KY. Nor have I found any burial records for them in these counties. NOTES (1) Rutherford-Pers. Prop. Taxes: 3-8. (2) History of Cumberland County" (Kentucky) by J. W. Wells. 1947. The Standard Printing Company, Louisville, KY: 47. This book states that "prior to the Cumberland Co. courthouse fire on 30 Dec 1933 which destroyed the marriage records from 1789-1882, Mrs. Nora C. McGee made a copy of the marriages from 1799-1817". Wells included them in his book. (3) When part of Cumberland Co. was taken off to form part of Monroe Co. in 1823, the record stated that part of the bounds were described as "....crossing Mud Camp Creek....4½ miles leaving James Page in Monroe and his father in Cumberland". I do not have the source of this quote, but it was included in a letter from Merritt L. Page of Green City, MO to DCR dated 27 Nov 1979. (4) Monroe Co., KY Tax Lists, 1820-1861 - Mormon Microfilms #8165 and 8166. James, as eldest son, may have inherited his father's two parcels of 46 and 50 acres of land on in Monroe Co. on which James was first taxed in 1830. The land was said to be 100 acres on Marrowbone Creek. From 1832 onward, this land was described in these lists as being on various creeks (Marrowbone, E. Fork or Mudcamp), but it appears to be the same land. He must have purchased more land in the same area as, in the 1848-1861 lists show him variously with 200 acres on Marrowbone, Mudcamp or Mashacks Creek. However described, it appears to have been the same land. (5) 1870 Monroe Co., KY Census, p. 430 - Precinct #5 - Dwelling and Family #176. Mary (PAGE), age 53, was Fleming B. Harper's 2nd wife and the Martha Page, age 43, was Martha's unmarried sister. (next time - James PAGE & Family, continued) (E-6-2-1)

    3. Hi, All, Because the errors for #-E-6-2-1-1 in Part #17-S-1 have haunted me these past couple of days, I've decided to post a "new" version of it instead of waiting for my "Errata". Please destroy the original post for this part and substitute the new one. Thanks for bearing with me..... Dolores
