Still looking for any information regarding the birthplace or actual birthdate of JOHN PAGE, Sr. Wife we believe was named Anna. Children were: William, Elizabeth, John Jr, Hannah, James, Francis, and Jenny. John Page may have been born between 1850-1856. He died in 1803/4 in Laurens District, SC. His land was located in Newberry Co, SC which was then the Old Ninety-Six. Will exchange any information I have on descendants if you can provide our missing information on this person. I just came back from a day cemetery hopping. I went to the Mt Zion Church Cemetery on Rt. 14 in Mineral Wells. Found a lot of Pages there. Is there any one who is researching the family of Robert H. Page and Fanny his wife. There is a section in this grave yard that states he and the stones around him were moved from a Page Cemetery about a mile southeast of Mt Zion Church. My father states that was the old home stead that he remembers as a child. so these Pages must be related to his grandmother Mary Etta Page(1852-1903) the wife of William Walter Johnson. dates unk for him
Last year I bought books across Pennsylvania chasing German ancestors. Before I start buying out the available NJ books I need to thin them down some" Re: The Burlington Court Book/ Early Church Records of Burlington County by Meldrum Vol. I,II,III/ Burlington County Marriagesby Craig. If anyone has any of these, I would love an index lookup to see if they are worth my purchasing. My Thomas Page b. 1772 married Sarah Coat b. 1774 and had four children John 1794, Ashiel (Asahel) 1796, Abner 1801 and Daniel1804 all of these supposedly born in Burlington. The 1793 tax lists two Thomas Pages: one in Chester, one in Nottingham. and a John Coat in Evesham Twp. My dates were passed on to me thirty years ago and I cannot verify any accuracy to them. No published indexes on the web can verify them, Hinshaw's Quaker records do not have them. Thomas came to Ohio as a Methodist with Jesse Justice. If he was Quaker prior to that, I don't know where to begin to find the documentation. Now that I know that there were two Thomas Pages of record, I can only hope that some church records may be the help. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Dorothy --
I just have to say this....I am so impressed with Delores Rutherford's research. I have been researching Warren and Logan County Kentucky records for many years on my Page (Eubank and Cambells, too) line and I find it amazing how her research completely clears up my problems with the "other" Page families that appear in those counties. Lindsey Page has always been a mystery to me and know I know why. He isn't mine. I still think it is strange that these Pages of Goochland Co are in the same place and same time as our line that came out of South Carolina. (John Page of Laurens Co SC) Cathy Crenshaw Morgan
Joseph PAGE (E-10) (concluded) To continue with more on my research to find Exolheath PAGE's son, Joseph PAGE and his family. Following is the information found so far on the man of that name in Caroline Co., VA. Joseph PAGE of Caroline Co., VA Many of the early records of Caroline Co., VA were burned in courthouse fires and what records remain are sporadic and sparse. The records for the 1700's and early 1800's (when they would be of use to us in this matter) are gone. However, the Personal Property Tax Lists are extant and have been consulted. The name of a Joseph PAGE appears in these lists in the years 1798-1803, 1810 and 1812 only. The 1811 list is incomplete, so he may have been there then also.(25) This Joseph PAGE appears in the 1810 Census as follows: 1810 CENSUS, CAROLINE CO., VA. - p. 918 Joseph Page 1 white male 45+ 1 white female 26-45 2 " " 16-26 1 " " 10-16 Agewise, this could be the Goochland Co., VA Joseph PAGE, son of Exolheath, but we can't jump to that conclusion without further evidence ....and that may be very difficult to obtain without deed or probate records for this time period. At any rate, the fact that this Joseph PAGE does not appear in the tax or census records in this county before 1798 and after 1812 is interesting. Where was he these other years? Could he have been the one in Amherst Co.? Also interesting is the fact that some of the same family names associated with the Amherst Cos. PAGE families appear in the available records of this county.....CAMPBELL, COURSEY and LINDSAY. Was he the man in Amherst Co. who md. Lucy F. COURSEY in 1795? (see the discussion of the COURSEY family in Part 27c) ADDED TIDBITS TO PONDER It is evident that the Joseph PAGE of Amherst (whoever he was) left there after 1795. If we could find him, it would probably answer the question as to whether or not he was our Goochland Co., VA man, son of Exolheath PAGE. Perhaps someone out there has records of a Joseph PAGE in some other State that they will share with us. I have found men of that name in NC and TN, but cannot connect them. One of the Joseph PAGE men in NC is no doubt the son of John PAGE (J) of this series and there was another Joseph PAGE (age 45+) in the 1820 Census of Davidson Co., TN where it is known that some Goochland Co., VA descendants of Exolheath PAGE had migrated earlier. 1820 CENSUS - DAVIDSON CO., TN - p. 91 Joseph Page 1 white male 45+ 1 white female 26-45 1 " " 10-16 5 " " under 10 2 in agriculture The 1830 Census Index of TN shows a "Luvy" PAGE in Williamson Co., TN (right next to Davidson Co.). However, I have not obtained the reading from this 1830 Census to determine whether this could be "Lucy" PAGE rather than "Luvy" or what her age was. Williamson and Davidson Cos., TN are directly south of Warren and Logan Cos., KY. NOTES (25) Caroline Co., VA Personal Property Taxes, 1783-1853. Lindsay PAGE Lindsay (Lindey, Lindsey, Linsey) PAGE is shown in the Amherst Co., VA tax lists for the years 1795-1801 and 1806-1807.(9) Lindsey (Linsey, Linsay, Linza) PAGE first appears in the Warren Co., KY Tax Lists in 1812 and continues to be listed through 1821. His widow, Polly, is listed after that.(13) Lindsay and Polly PAGE had at least six children and possibly more. The known ones are: (not necessarily in this order) Peggy PAGE - md. Michael FRAKES on 17 May 1813. Ambrose PAGE - md. Sarah, dau. of Martin BREEDLOVE. on 1 Nov 1824. Ambrose died, intestate, ca. 1833. The inventory of his estate was presented in court in 1834 by his administrator, Charles A. SKILES whose security was W. H. SKILES. The inventory only totalled $19.50 and indicated that he was a shoemaker.(16) Samuel PAGE - md. Permelia, dau. of Martin BREEDLOVE, on 22 May 1832 - witness Ambrose PAGE William S. PAGE - md. Elizabeth, dau. of Robt. F. GARLAND, on 16 Oct 1839. Hamilton PAGE - md. Mary Ann, dau. of Geo. WEBB, on 25 Feb 1840. Signed by Samuel PAGE and William C. JONES. Henry PAGE - md. Rebecca H., dau. of Jesse F. SMITH, on 21 Nov 1834 (17) Other possible children for Lindsay PAGE may be the following (from marriage records of Warren Co., KY): Lucy PAGE - md. Norvell S. ALCOCK on 7 Nov 1823 James PAGE - md. Elizabeth COLLINS on 7 Jul 1825 Sally PAGE - md. Joseph SWEENY on 5 Jan 1835 Evan H. PAGE - md. Anna SWEENY on 8 Jan 1835 by R.B. Collins. Is he a son of Lindsey PAGE or could he be the son of the Axel Heath PAGE who went to MO and he came back to Warren Co., KY to marry???(17) Lindsay PAGE died, intestate, sometime before July 1822 when his widow, Mary (also called "Polly" in other records), relinquished her right as administratrix and William H. SKILES, appointed administrator, put up a $500 bond with Joseph MOORE as his security at court.(18) He filed an appraisal and list of sales in the estate at the April Ct. 1823.(19) COURT RECORDS: The court records of this county are not available for the years 1803-1810 and these records were not read from 1811 onward. Not much is given other than the type of case and the outcome or forwarding to a subsequent ct., so that we are left in the dark to know the particulars of it. The following court records are the only ones that were found for this Amherst Co. Joseph PAGE. 4 Mar 1782: Joseph PAGE was one of the persons appointed by the ct. to "view" a present road and a new way for a road to and from James HOPKINS' "Mountain Plantation to Below William Fitzpatrick's" and to "view" "the Present Road by Joseph Linley's (Lindsey's?) Plantation and a new way to Rutn said Road and Report" to the ct..(20) 21 May 1792: Clough Shelton &c. vs. Joseph PAGE - In Debt. The case was "set aside" by consent of the parties and the defendant "confesses Judgement for the deb in the declaration".(21) DEEDS: There are no deeds listed in the Deed Indexes of Amherst Co. for a Joseph PAGE. However, the following references to Joseph (Jos.) PAGE were found in reading these records page-by-page. There may have been more in other deed books that were not read in depth. 27 Sep 1786: Jos. PAGE was a wits. to a deed from Jno. McMahon & his wf. Rosemond Mary and Moses Ray to Wm. Cabell.(22) 24 Dec 1788: Jos. PAGE was a wits. to a deed from Jno. Prichard & his wf. Unis and Mary Prichard, widow of Rich. Prichrd, dec'd to Wm. Cabell the elder.(23) COURSEY Family Research A William COURSEY received land patents in Spotsylvania, Caroline and Hanover Cos. in the 1730-1740s time period and a William COURSEY, Jr. obtained a land patent near the foot of the Piney Mt. in Louisa Co., in 1747.(24) Another James COURSEY was in Augusta Co., VA records in the late 1700's and he is said to have gone to Botetourt Co. later on. According to the Mormon CFI, this James md. Mary FRAZIER and had a number of children, all born in Orange Co., VA. Among these children was a daughter named Lucy who was born in 1776. However, there is also a marriage record of a Lucy COURSEY to Lanty GRAHAM in 1792 in Rockbridge Co., VA. A few other references to persons of this name have been found in the time period of interest to us, but they were not in areas close to where a Joseph PAGE was found. To continue with more on my research to find Exolheath PAGE's son, Joseph PAGE and his family. Following is the information found so far on the man of that name in Caroline Co., VA. Joseph PAGE (E-10) (continued) Following is a discussion of the Joseph PAGE of Amherst Co., VA who is under consideration as "possibly" being the son of Exolheath PAGE of Goochland Co.. Joseph PAGE of Amherst Co., VA A Joseph PAGE appears in Amherst Co., VA by 1782. Here are the records that I've found for him there. Also included here will be some records involving two other PAGE men in this county who may be related to him and possibly even be his sons. PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX LISTS: This Joseph PAGE was shown in these lists in 1782, 1785, 1787, 1789-1795 and not after that.(9) This may or may not be our Joseph. Some of these years overlap with the years that ours was in the Goochland Co. tax lists. To compare the above lists with those of Goochland Co.: The Joseph PAGE of Goochland Co. appeared in the tax lists there for the years 1782, 1784, 1787, 1790-91, but not after that. However, one must consider that the lists for the years 1785-1786 were incomplete. This does not necessarily mean that these could not be the same man as, in some years, the Joseph PAGE of Goochland Co. is in the lists, but not charged any tax....for what reason is not clear. Although not charged with a tax, he is shown as a taxable male when one would think that the column for this would have been left blank if he did not live there. MARRIAGE RECORDS: "Joseph Page, bachelor, and Lucy F. CORSEY, spinster, February 6, 1795. David Clark, surety. Consent of Lucy F. Certificate of marriage by the Rev. Ezekiel CAMPBELL, who calls her Lucy T. Cary." (10) Two more interesting marriages appear in these records that should be mentioned here, but information on these persons will be discussed in another post: "Lindsay Page, bachelor, and Polley Campbell, spinster, October 31, 1793. Patrick Campbell, surety. Consent of her father, Ambrose Campbell."(11) "Axel Heath PAGE and Sally INNES - marr. bond filed 12 Apr 1807. Jno. Innes and Saml. Garland were the securities or witnesses for the bond. The marr. was performed by Wm. WRIGHT. It was performed in April, but the day was not given in this record.(12) There are a number of other PAGE marriages in Amherst Co., but the above three do not seem to fit into any of the other families of this name there in that time period. The above marriage records are interesting for several reasons: 1. The marriages of both Joseph and Lindsay PAGE involved a CAMPBELL connection....even if one was the minister and is not known to have any connection to the persons being married...although there may have been one. 2. If the Joseph PAGE of the 1795 marriage was the son of Exolheath PAGE of Goochland Co., then this would probably be a second marriage for him....as he would have been 37 years old at this time and could have been md. before this. The families of all of the sons of old Exolheath PAGE of Goochland are known except Joseph. However, the Joseph of this marriage record was called a "bachelor", not a widower, and his bride was called a "spinster" indicating that she was not md. before....unless, at that time, they used these terms for any single person whether a widower or not. I have been unable to find any records that can prove whether the Lucy F. who md. Joseph PAGE in this county in 1795 was a CO(U)RSEY or a CARY, but a COURSEY family in Augusta Co., VA was connected to some CAMPBELL families too. This family of COURSEYs moved from Augusta to Botetourt Co. in the early 1800's and the latter county's eastern boundary was the top of the Blue Ridge Mts. from the part of Amherst Co. where the Joseph PAGE who md. Lucy F. CORSEY or CARY lived. I have numerous records of this COURSEY family, but nothing fits with a PAGE family as yet. There were also COURSEY families earlier in Spotsylvania Co., Caroline Co. and in Hanover Co., part of which borders Goochland Co.. Later on, there were some in Logan Co., KY who may or may not be related to these VA ones. Logan Co. has a small border with Warren Co. where other descendants of Exol- heath PAGE had migrated in 1811. 3. The first and middle names of Axel Heath fit into the Goochland Co. PAGE line....and have not been found in any other PAGE family anywhere. 4. Both the Axel Heath PAGE and Lindsey PAGE of two of these Amherst Co. marriage records appear later in the Warren Co., KY records which I will give here because they fit with these Amherst Co. men. Axel Heath PAGE Axel Heath PAGE does not appear in the Goochland or Amherst Co., VA tax lists either before or after his marriage, leading one to wonder if he just came to Amherst Co. to get married. The next record I have for him is in 1805 when he received a grant of 200 acres of land on Parker's Branch in Warren Co., KY. I do not have a copy of the grant, but it is mentioned in the deed whereby it was later sold. The tax records also also show him with another 160 acres on Gasper River in Warren Co., KY.(13) Axel Heath (H. Axil, Axwell, Axel H.) PAGE first appears in the tax records of Warren Co., KY in 1809 and continues to be in these lists through 1826.(13) He sold his 200 acre land grant to the children of Francis A. BURGE on 21 Mar 1827 and then left for Lafayette Co., MO.(14) This Axel Heath PAGE had six children, all sons. One son was named Axel Heath PAGE and another Joseph Henry PAGE which definitely hints at a connection to Exolheath PAGE's son Joseph as the offspring of the older Exolheath PAGE have been traced and none of them named sons Exolheath in any form. Axel Heath PAGE, Sr. died testate on 20 Aug 1840 in Lafayette Co., MO. I believe that Axel Heath PAGE (Sr.) md. 2) Sally RICHEY on 14 Mar 1831 in Lafayette Co., MO and she was the Sally named in his will.(15) The 1850 Census of Lafayette Co., MO shows the following: p. 230 - Dist. #46 (Being) - Dwelling & Family #1205 - taken 2 Nov William Richie (Raichie?) age 29 - b. KY Joseph " " 27 - " " Elizabeth " " 26 - " " Robert " " 6/12 - " MO Sarah PAGE " 64 - " VA Since there is no other Sarah (Sally) PAGE in Lafayette Co. to fit the age of the above Sarah and she is the age to have been the wife of Axel Heath PAGE, Sr., not Jr., it appears that the above marriage was for Axel Heath, Sr.. Joseph PAGE (E-10) Because so little is proven about Exolheath PAGE's youngest son, Joseph, the next several posts will outline the research that I've already done to try to find out more about him. In this way, perhaps someone else who has also done research on Joseph can add their information to what follows and, in that way, we can learn more about him and his descendants. I've found two Joseph PAGEs in VA records of that generation so far although I have not ruled out the possibility that they may be one and the same person: one in Amherst Co., VA and the other in Caroline Co., VA. I will cover what I've found for each one separately here and discuss each of them. First, here is what is known about the Joseph PAGE of Goochland Co., VA. Joseph's birthdate is the only one shown in the Douglas Register for the children of Exolheath and Christian PAGE. He was b. 22 Apr and bp'd 16 May 1756 in Goochland Co., VA.(1) He first appeared with his father, Exolheath PAGE, in the Tithable List of 1772 and continued to be with his father at least through 1775. The lists of 1776 and 1777 are incomplete and missed the one that Exolheath would have been in, but Joseph is listed on his own in these lists (when available) from 1778 through 1782. He again appears in them in 1784, 1787, 1789-1791 and then does not appear after that. He is charged a very small amount of tax for all years except 1790 and 1791 when he is not charged with any taxes although he appears in the list and is counted as a taxable person.(2) Other than the tax lists, the following items appear in the Gooch- land Co. records for this Joseph PAGE. 1778 Exolheath PAGE to "youngest son Joseph PAGE" - deed (or will, whichever way you want to take it) for all his household "stuff, chattles, moveables and immoveables both real and person after the decease of my wife Christian".(3) This record is not in the usual form of a will and is called a "deed" in the court orders when it was proved by the oaths of the witnesses thereto. Furthermore, a deed was often used in place of a will in order to give property away before one's death. The court orders state that the grantee in this deed was James PAGE, but the deed definitely states that it was Joseph PAGE....and it is known that Joseph was Exolheath's youngest son.(4) No listing of the property (personal or real) was given in this deed. Exolheath is not known to have owned any land. He was taxed on 500 acres of land in this county from 1763-1768, but no deed exists that shows that he ever purchased or sold any land. Perhaps he was in the process of purchasing it and never finished paying for it before his death. At this time, when a person was purchasing land and paying for it over a period of time, the initial "lease" would not appear in the deed books until the land was completely paid for and then a "release" would also be issued. These records usually were found in two separate documents together in the deed book....called deeds of "lease" and "release". Maybe the numerous references to a "Case of Trespass" and several cases of "Scire Facias" in the court order books involving Exolheath PAGE as plaintiff and James Overstreet as defendant had something to do with this land. At any rate, at the Mar 1780 Court, this case was not prosecuted further due to the death of Exolheath PAGE and the defendant (Overstreet) was awarded the court costs and his lawyer's fees.(5) I'm not familiar enough with legal lingo to determine whether or not this is possible and the court records do not clarify what many of the cases involved other than listing the legal term of their purpose. The Goochland Co. Deed Indexes show only one deed involving a James Overstreet as grantor or grantee, but that deed involved only 140 acres of land on Great Bird/Byrd Creek and was dated 1779.(6) Also, there are no deeds in the records of this county whereby Joseph PAGE purchased or sold any land. 1779 Joseph was a witness to the will of John LEE (husband of Betty PAGE, E-1?). I have tentatively placed Betty in these posts as a dau. of Exolheath PAGE and so she could have been Joseph's sister. This will was not dated when it was made, but it was probated on 19 Jul 1799. Joseph signed with a mark (X).(7) 1782 "Joseph Paige" was paid £16.3 for losses incurred by him as an inhabitant of Goochland Co. "by the British Army under the Comm'd of Earl Cornwallis" during the Rev. War. These losses were not identified in this listing.(8) What happened to Joseph after he left Goochland Co. is a mystery to me at this time. I've followed up a number of leads, but have failed to find anything conclusive about him. Some possibilities on this subject will be discussed in the following posts. NOTES (1) Douglas: 263. This record spells his father's name as "Axelheath" although it is also spelled several other ways in other Goochland Co. records---mostly as Exolheath. (2) Rutherford - Tithable Lists & Pers. Prop. Tax Lists: various pages. (3) Rutherford - Deeds: 11. (Goochland Co., VA Deed Bk. 12, p. 161) The deed was made 21 Jan 1778 and recorded on 17 Aug 1778. No wife joined in this deed, but she is known to be still alive at this time. This raises the question in my mind as to whether Exolheath's wife, Christian, at this time was always his wife or if he had been married previously and some of his children were by another wife. (4) Rutherford - Court: 12. (Goochland Co., VA Ct. Order Bk. 13, p. 99) (5) Rutherford - Court: 12. (Goochland Co., VA Ct. Order Bk. 14, 21) (6) Goochland Co., VA Deed Bk. 12, p. 249-250. (7) Rutherford - Deeds: 12. (Goochland Co., VA Deed Bk. 12, p. 254- 255.) The other witnesses to this will were: Lewis Herndon, John Strong and John Hodges. (8) "British Depredations in Goochland County, 1781", article by Robert Y. Clay, Richmond, VA. The Virginia Genealogist, Vol. 30, #3 (1986): 219. This record is dated 27 Sep 1782 which is the date that the amount was either authorized to be paid or actually paid. Several other PAGE men in the county were also reimbursed for similar losses. Friends, I made a long post yesterday, but I see that it hasn't been on this List. At first I thought that the PAGE-L was down, but now think that my post was too long to be accepted. I have written a message to see if that was the case and, if so, I will break it down into several parts and repost it as soon as I find out why it didn't get on. See you later.... Dolores
Alexander Page married Mrs. Eliza Thompson 8 Aug 1872 in Jasper Co. Missouri. This is a second marriage for both. They moved west to OR and WA in late 1870's with some of their children. L.L. Thompson was witness to the marriage of his step-brother, Alonzo Newton Page in Clark Co. WA 1889. Any leads appreciated. Thanks, Cathy (Page) Jennings

I'm new to this list, and am hoping to find some information on my PAGE ancestry. My 3xGreat Grandmother was a Harriet PAGE, daughter of Thomas PAGE a post messenger. She was probably born about 1810 - 1820. She married Edward CHANDLER at Norwood, Lambeth, Surrey, England in 1841, and they were living in Croydon, Surrey, England when a son John was born in 1843. At present that is all I know of my PAGE ancestry, although a family story suggests that this PAGE family are descendants of Sir Francis PAGE (1661 - 1741) a renowned Judge from Oxfordshire, England. I would like to find further details of my 3xGreat Grandmother's ancestry, and also any information on Sir Francis PAGE. Any help or suggestions would be most welcome. Thank you, Marcus Wild, Shropshire, England. tigg@lineone.net
