    3. I have belonged to this list for so long, I don't have my subbing instructions any longer (too many computers and hard drives ago!) Could someone kindly send me subbing directions? I have a dear friend who wants to join our list. And lastly, are old messages archived? And where does one find them? I thank you all for your time and help.

    3. ` Children of William PAGE (R-1) and Agnes HOUCHINS (His first marriage) R-1-1 Jean/Jane PAGE She was b. 12 Sep and bp'd 15 Oct 1758 in Goochland Co., VA.(1) She md. John THURSTON on 8 Feb 1795 in the same co.---she was his 2nd wife.(2) It is not known when Jean/Jane died, but she was evidently still living when John died in 1818. John THURSTON was the son of Francis THURSTON a descendant of the Middlesex family of that name that migrated to Goochland Co. in the 1740's. John's first wife was Patty Wetherspoon who was the niece of William PAGE's (R-1) step-mother, Winifred. John and Patty were md. in 1772 in Goochland Co. and one child, Betsy, was baptized to them in 1774.(3) Betsy md. John GLASS in Goochland Co. in 1795.(4) No children for John and Jean/Jane appear in the Douglas Register. However, John's will was probated in 1818 and named two sons (William & John) and three grandchildren (Patsey GLASS, Susannah THURSTON and Reuben THURSTON).(5) It seems probable that all these children were by John's first wife. R-1-2 Robert PAGE Robert was b. 26 Jan and bp'd 14 Mar 1762 in Goochland Co..(6) He md. Sally, dau. of Giles HARDING on 24 Oct 1789 in Goochland Co..(6) Robert and his family migrated to near Nashville, TN in Davidson Co. with his wife's father and her brothers and sisters. Sally's brother, John HARDING, who owned the land where his son, William Giles HARDING rebuilt the original brick house of his father's into the lovely mansion "Belle Meade" in Nashville, TN. The original log cabin of John HARDING is still on the property and both are now the property of the Association for the Preservation of Tennessee Antiquities. Robert PAGE died in Davidson Co., TN sometime before 1817 when his widow md. Capt. James WALKER by whom she had one more child. Robert and Sally had nine children: Giles Harding, Robert, John, George, Franklin, Sally Ann, Patsy, Polly and Elizabeth. Of these John, George, Franklin and Sally Ann later went to Mississippi and later generations also migrated to AL, AR and TX.(8) R-1-3 Susanna(h) PAGE Susanna was b. 17 Feb and bp'd 1 Apr 1764 in Goochland Co..(9) The bond for her marriage to Jesse HODGES, son of Johnson HODGES and Lucy PAGE (E-2?) was filed on 21 Jan 1788 in Goochland Co.. (10) Only one son has been proven for this couple... Robert. R-1-3-1 Robert HODGES He was reported as having been born in VA "of Scotch-Irish ancestry".(11) He md. Mary ("Polly") PAGE, dau. of Robert PAGE (R-1-2), date unknown. Robert & Mary are said to have gone to Todd Co., KY where Robert died young and their son John Harding HODGES was reared in Davidson Co., TN. A letter from Charles H. Martin of Grand Lampasas, TX states that "while a young man, he (John Harding HODGES) managed the large Gail Plantation in Sunflower Co., Mississippi for a number of years, after which he returned to Tenn. & located (in) Dickson Co.". Charles also states that John Harding HODGES md. Sarah CHAPPELL and had a brother, Jesse HODGES (age 66) who lived with him in the 1880 Census of Dickson Co., TN.(11) R-1-4 Elizabeth ("Betsy") PAGE Elizabeth was b. 11 May and bp'd 25 Jun 1769 in Goochland Co., VA.(12) She probably md. Thompson WILBURN(E) in 1791 in Goochland Co., VA.(13) Thompson was the son of Thomas WILBURN and Christian PAGE (E-3?). See Part #13 of this series. NOTES (1) Douglas: 264. (2) Williams: 97. Jane was said to be the dau. of William Page. The surety was William Page, Jr. (her brother). They were md. by Rev. Lewis Chaudoin. (3) Douglas: 46, 307. The marriage was performed on 18 May 1772 and a child, Betsy, was b. 15 Dec 1774 and bp'd 22 Jan 1775. (4) Williams: 33. Their marr. bond was dated 20 Apr 1795 and the surety was David Glass. They were md. on 24 Apr by Rev. Lewis Chaudoin. (5) Goochland Co., VA Deed Bk. 23, p. 324-325. (6) Douglas: 265. (7) Williams: 70. This record can also be found in Goochland Co., VA Deed Bk. 15, p. 478. (8) Information on this family shared by too many persons to list here, but here are a few of them: Lewis W. Page of Scottsboro, AL Tom Crump of Seguin, TX Dawn Detteart of Stockton, CA Larry Gray of Bayside, CA Charles Martin of Grand Lampasas, TX (9) Douglas: 265. (10) Williams: 40. The surety for the bond was Johnson HODGES. (11) Letter to DCR from Charles H. Martin dated 1979. (12) Douglas: 265. (13) Williams: 106. The marr. bond for her marriage was filed on 30 Nov 1791. Thompson Wilburne's name was written "Thompson Wilbon" on the actual bond which was dated 30 Nov 1791. William Page gave his consent and the surety was James Clements. 3. I thought that I had sent the following message and when I downloaded, the previous two messages about my posts on PAGE-L came up....which were not supposed to be posted to this List...let alone twice!!! Here's what I meant to post. We made some changes in the way that I write my posts before putting them on Netscape to post....and that's what happened!!! Hi, For you PAGE researchers connected to the Robert PAGE who md. Mary MURRELL and was in Albemarle and Amherst Co., VA. Have you tried looking into the Caroline Co., VA records (what there are of them)? According to the book "Colonial Caroline, A History of Caroline County, Virginia" by T. E. Campbell, 1954, p. 486, a Nicholas PAGE's estate was probated there in 1779 with John PAGE as his executor or administrator. This will (or probate record) is not listed in Torrence's "Virginia Wills & Administrations, 1632-1800" book. I haven't obtained a copy of this probate record and, because so many of the records of Caroline Co. have been destroyed before the mid-1800's, perhaps this record is not available. I know that the deed records are not complete until 1846. Dolores

    3. For Goochland Co. PAGE Family researchers..... In 1998, I began a series of posts on the Goochland Co., VA PAGE families on PAGE-L@rootsweb.com. I am now up to Part #28 on them and will continue until I get the first 2-3 generations posted showing where they went when they left this county. In order to get the past posts, contact the following address: http://PAGE-L@rootsweb.com Once there, do the following: 1. Type "PAGE" (without the quotes) in the bos labeled "Name of List" and then click on "Submit Query". 2. In the box labeled "Query", put "Part" in and click on "1998" (and later, after you've read that year's entries, go back and click on "1999" to get the rest of them). This will bring up all of the message that I wrote to that List to date. You may just want the PAGE posts for Goochland Co. and, if so, do the following. 3. Keep scrolling on down the listing until you get to the ones that have the following "Filenames". These will begin with Part #1 ("Filename #53) and continue until the last one posted. 4. When you get to each of these, click on "File" and that message will come up. Then click on "full" at the bottom to get the full message. Each may be printed separately on line if you desire. Please note that my E-Mail address has changed since the first posting to: dcr555@softcom.net I also have much information on PAGE families in other counties of VA for those who may be interest. You may contact me personally for help on those. Dolores in California

    3. Alfred Washington Foster Page, son of John and Mary (Eubank) Page was born ca 1812 in KY (probably Warren Co). He married Anne Rebecca Campbell, daughter of Robert and Matilda (Stuart) Campbell on November 3 1833 in Wilson Co, TN. He appears in the 1840 census in Gibson Co, TN. In 1849 he moves to Logan Co, KY with his father-in-law and appears on the 1850 census there . On March 1 1851 he signs a mortgage to his father-in-law. In 1860 he appears as age 48 birthplace KY with children Jefferson Green (age 24), William Washington (age 19) Thomas E (age 16), Wilson Pigge(age 15), Frances Johnson (age 13 female), Mary James (age 10) and Nancy Anna (age 8). William Washington Page's estate appears Dec 11 1863 giving the whole of his estate to his mother, Rebecca A. Page, and is settled Sep 24 1866. Executor Thomas G. Cornelius. 3. Children of Robert PAGE (R) Robert PAGE was md. at least twice. The name of his first wife is unknown at this time. She was the mother of his proven two children, William and Mary Ann. See Part 4 for more information on this Robert PAGE. Robert left bequests to six persons, but only called William and Mary Ann his children. He left bequests to four other women whom he did not call his children....so the controversy remains as to whether or not they actually were children of his. I do not believe that they were for reasons already given in previous posts. Therefore, only the two persons named by Robert to be his children will be discussed here. R-1 William PAGE William's birthdate is estimated as ca. 1734-35 because he was first taxed with his father in 1751. He continued to be with his father through 1757 as his first marriage did not take place until late that year. The next year onward, he appears in his own household in Goochland Co..(1) From 1782 onward through 1810, his name appears in the Personal Property Tax Lists of that county.(2) He married Agnes HOUCHINS, his first wife, on 2 Dec 1757 in Goochland Co..(3) She died sometime before 24 Sep 1770 when he md. 2) Mary WEATHERSPOON the daughter of the widow Mary WEATHERSPOON, sister of his father's second wife, Winefred PATTY.(3) There were children by both marriages. Although William inherited his father's 266 acres of land when his father died, he evidently only lived on half of it until the death of his step-mother in 1792 as she was taxed on the other 133 acres previous to her death.(4) At that time, he inherited the rest of the 266 acres. In 1793, William purchased 49½ acres of land "bordering R. Payne's land and was taxed on 315½ acres from 1793 until when he and his wife second wife, Mary, sold it to James and Clayburn Layne at a handsome profit in 1805.(5) William's will was probated in Goochland Co. on 22 Jan 1811, having been written and signed on 12 Feb 1807. He named his sons Jesse and John as executors, but when the will was probated, both of them relinquished this right and later Nath'l PERKINS was made administrator. John HODGES and Abbot PAGE acted as his securities for this task.(6) William was evidently already dead before the Land Tax was taken in 1810 as he is shown in that list as "Wm. Page, dec'd" with 266 acres of land in the Upper District of the county. His land continued to be shown in these Land Tax Lists under "Wm. Page, dec'd" only through 1817.(7) His estate was appraised on 31 Jan 1811. It included three negroes, Tom, Polley and Sally, and totalled £1,113.52---a tidy sum in those days.(8) The sale of his estate was made on 31 Jan 1811. His wife and many of the children purchased items, but nothing was purchased by his sons Jesse, James or Robert.(9) In 1817, Nat Perkins as "administrator of the estate of Wm. Page, dec'd" deeded William's land to Mann French, Jr.. This deed stated that on 19 May 1812, the court had appointed Nat Perkins as the administrator of William's estate and empowered him to sell the land. The acreage in this deed was given as 237¾ acres.(10) NOTES (1) Rutherford-Tithables: 1-10. (2) Rutherford-Pers. Prop. Taxes: 1-15. (3) Douglas: 37. (4) Rutherford-Land Taxes & Alterations: 1-3. (5) Rutherford-Deeds: 16, 19. (Goochland Co., VA Deed Bk. 16, p. 189 and Deed Bk. 19, p. 377) William purchased the land for £49.10 and sold it for £111.7.6. (6) Rutherford-Deeds: 22. (Goochland Co., VA Deed Bk. 21, p. 21) William's sons Jesse and John were named as executors. The witnesses to the will were John Bryce and Arch's Perkins. His son, Abbot, was said to be "under age 21" and his dau. Patty was said to be "single". (7) Rutherford-Land Taxes & Alterations: 8 (8) Rutherford-Deeds: 22. (Goochland Co., VA Deed Bk. 21, p. 33-34) (9) Ibid.: 22. (Goochland Co., VA Deed Bk. 21, p. 34-35) (10) Rutherford-Deeds: 25. (Goochland Co., VA Deed Bk. 22, p. 456) Perhaps this land was re-surveyed and found to contain less than the original 266 acres or there may be a deed that I did not find for the missing 26¼ acres. It would probably not include the name PAGE in the Deed Index....and the grantor would be the same Nat Perkins. This deed was recorded on 21 Jul 1817. The witnesses were Arch's Perkins, Jackson Mill and Robert French. (next - Children of William PAGE's first marriage - cont'd)

Well, I felt like I got to know your great grandfather because I was so interested in him. I am so happy he belongs to you. I have a copy of his death certificate sent to me by a cousin from Kerrville. He was married, died of a cerebral hemorrhage. Physician or Coroner was F.C. Walsh. Undertaker was Kerrville Funeral Parlor. I have him on the 1900 Kerr Co census age 60 with wife Saria F. and children Mary A. (can't read age), son Bobbie M (age 17) and son Luther O(age 4). William H was born in SC and his father SC, mother in NC. Saria's parents were born in SC and she is age 53. The children were all born in TX. William was a farmer. I can mail you these copies if you want them. I believe I also took a photo of the grave when I vistited Kerr County years ago. Cathy
