    1. [PAGE-L] Finding the father's name
    2. Ed Page
    3. Hi fellow genealogists: For several years, I have been having trouble finding the father’s name for a couple of my known ancestors. Before 1850, it is quite difficult to match children with their father. So, I asked my ‘cousins’ on the net to send me names of any documents, papers, Certificates, or licenses, that would be likely to list the father’s name. I am very pleased to say that the ‘cousins’ came through. At least 25 people sent from 3 to 20 suggestions. I promised to make a list and send it to everyone who wants one. So here it goes. I can not verify all of these ideas personally, but I think that you will be surprised by the many fantastic suggestions---and if you can’t trust your friendly genealogist, then……….. 1. Birth Records 2 Marriage Records and Certificates 3 Death Records 4 Wills 5 Mortality Schedules ---- US Census, for one year previous to census taking in 1850, 60,70, and 80 6 Census records after 1850 7 Tax lists 8 Some land deeds 9 Ships passenger lists and immigration records 10 Military and Pension papers. 11 Newspapers, (obits, weddings, and local references to people. 1. [PAGE-L] Part #35

    3. ` I've studied these North Carolina records until I'm blue in the face trying to make sense of the various Williams, Johns and Josephs in the third generation of this branch down from John PAGE, Sr. and his wife Hannah. However, I'm going to make a stab at piecing these families together. If any of you have different ideas, I hope that you will feel free to post them for discussion here. Children of William & Jean(y) PAGE (J-1) William and Jean(y) PAGE had six children. The baptisms of four of them appear in the Douglas Register. J-1-1 Joseph PAGE He was b. 23 Dec 1755 and bp'd 17 Jan 1756 in Goochland Co., VA.(1) It is not known who, where or when he married. In early years, before the death of his uncle Joseph, this Joseph was called Joseph PAGE, Jr.. I believe that he was the Joseph PAGE, Junr. who received a grant of 150 acres of land in Pitt Co., NC in 1782. The land was described as being on the S. side of the Tarr River.(2) Joseph sold 100 acres of this land to Melchesdeck PAGE in 1786.(3) The other 50 acres was sold by this Joseph's son, William PAGE (with two other tracts of land) to Levi MESSER in 1813.(4) The 1790 Census lists two Joseph PAGE men in Newbern District, Pitt Co., NC and it is difficult to determine which is the older one, the son of John PAGE, Sr. (J-1) and this one. In this census, the only age categories given for the males in each family were "age 16 and up including heads of families" and "under age 16". The families of both have a number of children in them. However, one Joseph PAGE was shown next to William PAGE in the census and, because the description of Joseph, Jr.'s land grant of 1782 was described partly as bordering the land of William Page and was on the south side of the Tarr River, it would be my guess that the Joseph next to William PAGE in this 1790 Census was this one. J-1-2 William PAGE, Jr. He was b. 27 Dec 1757 and bp'd 22 Jan 1758 in Goochland Co., VA.(5) He died on 17 Sep 1830 in Pitt Co., NC.(6) He is said to have md. Rhody/ Rhoda LANGLEY. She may have been a daughter of the Azaniah LANGLEY whose name appears right next to that of William PAGE, Sr. (J-1) in the 1790 Census of Newbern District, Pitt Co., NC and whose estate was settled in Edgecombe Co., NC in 1802. Rhody PAGE, wife of William PAGE was named as one of his heirs.(7) William had land in both Pitt and Edgecombe Cos., NC. In 1782, he was issued NC Land Grant #2039 in Edgecombe Co. for "200 acres of land on both sides of the Stirrup Iron Branch Joining the County line and the lines of JOSEPH SULLIVEN and HENRY GAY".(8) William sold this land to Hezekiah LANGLEY in 1789.(9) It would appear that William's wife, Rhody, had died sometime between when the 1820 and 1830 Census was taken as William appears in the latter census giving his age as 70-80, but there is no female of an age to be his wife in his household. NOTES (1) Douglas: 265. "Will: Page & Jeanie Stevens" were given as the parents. (2) "Page in NC": 617. The chain carriers for the survey were William Page and John Powers. (Pitt Co., NC Deed Bk. C, p. 94) (3) Ibid.: 623. Witnesses to this deed were "?Jerat Eason" and William Page. (Pitt Co., NC Deed Bk. L, p. 123) (4) Ibid.: 652. (Pitt Co., NC Deed Bk. 5, p. 131) (5) Douglas: 265. "William and Jean Pages" were given as the parents. (6) Information from Family Tree Maker's World Family Tree as received from Pat Langwehr who cautions that these records should be checked before being accepted. This is true of any records one has not verified personally. (7) "The PAGE Family: Unique Route from Virginia to Texas" written and compiled by Fae Alice Etheredge, 1974. Information from this book was supplied by Pat Landwehr of Missouri City, TX. (8) "Page in NC": 63. The chain bearers for the survey of this land were Wm. Page, Sen. and Azaniah Langley. It was described as being on Stirrup Iron Branch and bordering the lands of Joseph Sullivan and Henry Gay. (9) Ibid.: 64. The witnesses to this deed were Josiah LANGLEY and Joseph PAGE. The description of this land matches the previous land. (Edgecombe Co., NC Deed Bk. 5, p. 435) (next time - Children of William & Jeany PAGE cont'd) (J-1)

    2. TOM MERICLE
    3. I am searching for ancestors of Samuel Page, born ca1770, died ca 1825. Married to Hannah Cornell, born ca 1773 died ca 1851. When Samuel died Hannah married David House. We think Samuel lived in Vermont and New Hampshire as well as in New York before moving to Middleport, Gainsborough Township, Lincoln County, Ontario, Canada in 1818-1820.. Canada . He is believed to be buried in Dundas Cemetary, Ontario. We think he or his parents may have been loyalists. There are old records of this Page family in the Beamsville Baptist Church. They had 7 children as follows: Margaret b 1790 Married James Van Valkenburgh b 1788 John b 1792 married Martha ? (Died) Remarried Amy D. James Dowlin b 1801 married Mary Fisher (English) Rozann (Rosanna) b 1802 married Andrew Shiner Rebecca b 1806 Nancy b 1807 married John Van Valkenburgh Nathaniel b 1807 married Wealthy Matilda Peck Tracing this common name is difficult. I will appreciate any help anyone can give me. The Canadian records are good but they to not tell us anything about Samuel's parents. Tom Mericle tpmmsi@monitor.net .

Then I will use the info to try to find my three illusive fathers. Ed >> Well now Ed just how did you lose those three fathers? I only have two and one of those is my step father. All kidding aside....for the time being....it depends upon the time periods. I've found fathers and the even more illusive maiden names of mothers on vital statistic documents: birth, death, and marriage and my all time favorite is SS5, the social security application forms .... SS cards were issued in the 1930s....and the application form seems to be more likely to have accurate information....no one has to fudge their age to get married or mixed up at time of death. Cemetery and burial records and obits are other sources...and news articles especially in small town chatty journals. I've also found a lot of relatives through the census some even before 1850 when all the names of the family were finally entered....through process of elimination and through lots of cranking of the old microfilms and even through the published books of census listings orlocal county histories. I've also found that it really pays to collect collateral family information....one of my grandfather's brothers had a bio written which gave lots of family background that I never would have found if I had just stuck with researching my direct line. I've also heard that in the earlier years it pays to follow neighbors because yes indeed neighbors as well as family moved together, hung out and married etc...... In short, I guess where ever names may be found....and there are lots more places that are not so obvious.....a clue may be found. In one of the KY tips articles written by Sandra Gorin, I believe, the name of the witness and surity on marriage bonds and on sales of property were often family. Good luck....connie

Was this their primary >role? >Connie .... Falls Church VA > ______________ Hi Connie: Justices of the Peace were part of our English Common Law heritage. These men were of better than average education with some knowledge of English Common Law through either formal or informal training/education. They were commissioned by the legal powers that existed in the counties such as Judges of the Orphans Court or court of Common Pleas. There role was to hear and resolve minor civil complaints of the people in their township and they did perform civil marriages (just like the ones done in Las Vegas), no doubt for a fee. They often served in other capacities such as school teachers or shop keepers. Because of their official duties they often made enemies of people who received adverse adjudications from them. One of my FANAGAN ancestors was a Justice of the Peace in Hopewell Twp. of Bedford Co., Penn. a few years after he arrived from Ireland about 1801. He was found dead floating face down in a mill pond on Yellow Creek, Hopewell Twp. in 1809, so the poor man didn't even appear in either the 1800 or the 1810 Federal Census! The mill was owned by the father of the man (a Welsh blacksmith) who married his widow, moved into his house, raised his kids, and assumed his duties as Justice of the Peace. George W. Page

    1. [PAGE-L] Correction for Part #33
    2. Dolores C. Rutherford
    3. Thanks to Dan Page and Gordon W. Pace for sending me messages correcting the names and dates of the children of Mary Ann PAGE and Joseph PACE. These births were actually in The Douglas Register and when I checked back on it, I found that I had written "PACE" in the margin of these entries in that book....but I only looked for the PACE spelling (p. 263) when I wrote Part #33. It seems that Mrs. Mehrkens erred in the listing that I used. I didn't even notice the thirty-odd years difference in the birthdates of the children from her records! Tish! Tish! Here is the correct listing of those children: Children of Joseph PACE & Mary Ann PAGE (R-2) R-2-1 Robert PACE He was b. 19 Oct and bp'd 20 Nov 1763 in Goochland Co., VA.(1) He md. Frances TUGGLE (dau. of Henry TUGGLE and his wf. Ellender CONNELLY on 5 Jan 1790 in Goochland Co..(2) Henry TUGGLE was b. in Middlesex Co., VA, the son of Henry TUGGLE, Jr. (1699-1733) and his wife Mary GODBEY (dau. of Edward GODBEY and his wf. Frances). Mary Godbey TUGGLE md. 2) Daniel BASKETT in Middlesex Co. and moved to Goochland Co. with a number of other Middlesex Co. families. (3) R-2-2 Ann PACE She was b. 29 Apr and bp'd 8 June 1766 in Goochland Co., VA.(4) R-2-3 Joseph PACE He was b. 28 May and bp'd 3 Jul 1768 in Goochland Co., VA. (5) He is no doubt the Joseph PACE who md. Elizabeth CLEMENTS, dau. of John, in Goochland Co. on 28 Jan 1795.(6) R-2-4 Jean PACE She was b. 24 Aug and bp'd 30 Sep 1770 in Goochland Co., VA. (7) R-2-5 John PACE He was b. 26 Sep 1773 and bp'd on 7 Nov 1774.(8) Could this bp. date of 1774 be wrong? It seems like a long time between the birth and the baptism. R-2-6 Josiah PACE He was b. 23 Sep and bp'd 3 Nov 1776.(9) If this isn't correct, I hope that someone will please enlighten us on it. NOTES (1) Douglas: 274. The parents are listed as "Joseph Pierce & Marianne Page". (2) Williams: 69. The marr. bond was filed on 4 Jan 1790 with the "surety" being John Lee. This is no doubt the John Lee who md. Jane Tuggle, sister of Frances, the bride of Robert PACE. The marriage of Robert and Frances is also given in the Goochland Co., VA Deed Bk. 15, p. 385 and 452. (3) Records of these families can be found in the book "The Parish Register of Christ Church, Middlesex County, Va. from 1653 to 1812" publ. by The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Virginia and reprinted by the Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc. of Baltimore, MD, 1975. (4) Douglas: 274. The parents are listed as "Joseph Peace & Marianne Page". (5) Douglas: 274. The parents are listed as "Joseph Pearse & Marianne Page". (6) Williams: 69. The marr. bond was filed on 19 Jan 1795 with the "surety" being John Guerrant, Jr.. They were md. by Rev. Lewis Chaudoin. (7) Douglas: 274. The parents are listed as "Joseph Pearse & Marianna Page". (8) Douglas: 274. The parents are listed as "Joseph Pearse & Maryanne Page". (9) Douglas: 274. The parents are listed as "Joseph Pierce & Marianne Page".

    1. [PAGE-L] Part #34
    2. Dolores C. Rutherford
    3. ` Children of John PAGE, Sr. & wf. Hannah ? (J) John PAGE, Sr. (J) was discussed in Part #5 of this series. Where did John PAGE, Sr. and his family go when they left Goochland Co., VA ca. 1766-1767? The whereabouts of John and his sons for the next seven years are a mystery to me as of now. He may have moved to some other county in Virginia or North Carolina. It would be difficult to find them before 1774 without searching the tax, deed and court records of many other counties in both States. Since the time period of 1767 through 1773 would be involved, the "Tithable Lists" of the Virginia counties would appear to be a good place to search for them. However, these lists are missing for most of the Virginia counties and, by the time the Personal Property Lists began (1782), we know that most of his family (and possibly him and his wife as well) were in North Carolina. I have done very little research into the North Carolina records, therefore much of the following information is derived from census and the research of others. A main source for this is the excellent book "The Page Family in North Carolina, 1685-1850" compiled by Jesse M. Page, Jr., 1987. This is not a family history of the various PAGE families in that State. It is rather a compilation of census, land and some court records for this name in 44 of the counties.(1) Through the Goochland Co., VA records of John and Hannah's family, census records of North Carolina, the records in Mr. Page's book and information supplied to me by some family researchers on this line the following information on this family is offered for consideration.(2) The earliest North Carolina record that can definitely be traced to any of John's family is in Pitt Co. in 1774 when records of them begin to appear there. These records seem to indicate that John and Hannah were with them. They were getting along in age by this time and may have lived with one of their sons. There are many deeds involving John PAGEs, but it is not always evident from them as to whether they were for John PAGE, Sr., his son of the same name or the third generation men of that same first name. However, many of the earliest deeds appear to belong to the son, John Jr. and his son, John. Just when John PAGE, Sr. died is not clear. In 1800, Hannah PAGE (probably John, Sr.'s wife) and Wm. BOWERS were the only two witnesses to two deeds involving the heirs of Joseph PAGE, the son of John and Hannah PAGE.(3) This must be the wife (or widow?) of John PAGE, Sr. formerly of Goochland Co., VA. No other record of a Hannah PAGE appears in these records that Mr. Page has in his book and it is known that John and Hannah PAGE's dau., Hannah, had married, lived in a different NC county and was dead by this time. The only other Hannah found in the family of John and Hannah PAGE was a dau. of their son William and this Hannah was married by then---so this could not have been her. When these deeds were proven in court in 1802, only Wm. BOWERS appeared to do this and the deeds were accepted for recording. Most Virginia counties required at least three witnesses to a deed and two of them had to come to court and "prove" that they had witnessed the signatures on it (if it was not proved by the grantors themselves) before it could be recorded. It appears that North Carolina only required two witnesses and that, usually, two of the witnesses would have to attest to the signatures on the deed in order to prove it to be recorded. However, these two deeds were accepted for recording with only one witness. Could Hannah have been dead by 1802? This may also mean that John PAGE, Sr. was dead by 1800. Since Jesse M. Page did not include any wills from Pitt Co. in his book, a search of the will records of that county might solve the question as to just when John PAGE, Sr. died. By the 1780's, records of John and Hannah's descendants also begin appearing in the neighboring Edgecombe and Martin Counties, NC and some of the land lay in both Edgecombe and Pitt Counties. Since North Carolina is unfamiliar research territory for me, it is hoped that any errors in the following posting of this family will be corrected by those in the "know". John PAGE, Sr. and his wife had the following children who were discussed briefly in Part #5 of this series, but the following can be added about them. J-1 William PAGE William's birthdate is estimated as ca. 1731-32 as he was first listed in the Goochland Co., VA "Tithable Lists" with his father in 1748.(4) He was md. to Jean(y) STEVENTON in Goochland Co. sometime before 23 Dec 1751, the date of the birth of their first child.(5) Although married, William continued to be taxed with his father until 1757, when he first appears in his own household. In 1761, his father gave him 150 acres of land on Lickinghole Creek in Goochland Co. adjoining the 100 acres that the father had given to his son, John, Jr. at the same time.(6) According to the court records, William owed a debt to Alexander Baine, a merchant in the area. His father may have paid the debt and taken back the land. A deed from William to his father is alluded to in the court records of Goochland Co. although no such record is found in the deed books of that county.(7) However, it is evident that this 150 acres, along with the 100 acres that John PAGE, Sr. had deeded to his son, John, Jr. was sold by John, Sr. to William BRITT in 1767, just before the family moved away from Goochland Co.. The description of the land in this latter deed matches that of the two deeds to John, Sr.'s sons John and William.(8) 1766 is the last year that William appears in the Goochland Co., VA "Tithable Lists". The next record found for him is a deed showing that he purchased 100 acres of land in Pitt Co., NC from John AUTRY of Cumberland Co., NC in 1774.(9) William continued to purchase more land and receive land grants for even more land in that area. The 1790 Census of Pitt Co., NC shows only one William PAGE in Newberry District. William PAGE 3 males 16+ 2 males -16 3 females 1 slave Since there was only one William PAGE in this county this year, perhaps we can conclude that this was William PAGE, Sr. and his other four sons were living with him this year. One of the three females was evidently his wife and, of the other two, one could have been his daughter and one could have been the wife of one of his sons....or the other two women may have been wives of his sons. William PAGE evidently died sometime before 10 Mar 1807 when his son, James PAGE, sold the land that his father had willed to him.(10). William's will can probably be obtained from Pitt Co., NC. NOTES (1) "The Page Family in North Carolina, 1685-1850 by Jesse M. Page, Jr., 1987. Jesse M. Page, Jr., Raleigh, N.C.. This book will henceforth be referred to as "PAGE in NC". The Elizabeth Steventon who md. William Page's brother, Joseph, was no doubt related to her, possibly a sister. (6) Rutherford-Deeds: 6. 3. Hello, I am looking for information on Pike Shelton Page from North Carolina. He was married to Ada Rosello (Rosalia?) Reese of Oklahoma and they had at least one daughter. Merion Elizabeth Page was b. 14 Feb 1920 in Salisbury, North Carolina. Ada was born in 1895, so I am estimating Pike's birth year to be bet. 1885 - 1895. I know this isn't much information, but I'm and optimist. Thanks, Gail

    2. Becki Page and list, I am looking for parents and siblings of Thomas PAGE, b. Feb. 4, 1815 in Illinois according to census ( question whether that is correct as Illinois was not even a state yet). He married Elizabeth POTEET on Oct. 24, 1839 in Shelby Co., Illinois. She was the daughter of Isaac POTEET and Nancy GREER of Williamson Co., Tennessee. Isaac POTEET's father was Barnabas POTEET and Isaac also named a son Barnabas. Becki - with the unusual first name of Barnabas being in both our families, and yours possibly being from Tennessee, do you know if our PAGE families connect? I can't find Cobb Co., Tennessee in my "Handy Book for Genealogists" or on a current map. Nancy Arendsee Volunteer of Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness at http.www.rootsweb.com/~tnraogk/

    1. [PAGE-L] What happens to the kids when the parents die?
    2. I'm trying to locate information on where my grandfather and his brother lived after their mother died. My grandfather was 5 and his brother was 6 in 1892 when she died...they show up in 1910 census, but so far I haven't located them in 1900? My general question is about what some of you have found in tracking similar situations. How far away from the homesite might they have gone? And my feeling is that the more you know about the collateral families, the easier this situation would be to discover. I've had one youngest daughter go to live with the family of her older married sister, a couple of families where the children were in orphanages after their father died or deserted the family. I found the two brothers mentioned above living with a brother of their father in 1910. Any other types of experiences you've found in your research would be of great help to me.. Thanks. Connie
