I've had so many requests for the lineage of William Franklin PAGE of Henry Co., MO (b. ca. 1830 in KY) that I've decided to post the lineage that I have for him here. I hope that this isn't too long to appear on the List, but I wanted to include the proof that I have for this lineage. Several persons had contacted me on William's ancestry, but I wasn't able to place him until a few days ago when various bits of information that was supplied to me by Merritt Page and Eleanor Poindexter some years ago and, later by Peggy Gough, Rhoby Wayne Rasch and Richard Hillebrand on this List finally fitted with information that I had gleaned from my KY and VA research. William Franklin PAGE was b. in Logan Co., KY ca. 1830. His birthdate has only been estimated from the census records of him and his family. He was a prominent Judge in Clinton, Henry Co., MO. According to his descendants, he went to MO about 1855. Here's the information on him: The 1850 Census of Logan Co., William F. PAGE of an age to be this one was living with Samuel J. PAGE. However, this census has the father's name wrong ....it should be LEMUEL J. PAGE. 1850 Census, Logan Co., KY, Page 12 (District #1 - taken 20 Aug) Dwelling #167, Family #173: Samuel J. Page - age 48 - b. VA - Farmer (Lemuel J. PAGE) Susan " - " 44 - " " Margaret Ann " - " 21 - " KY * William F. " - " 20 - " " Richard H. " - " 18 - " " James Lofies " - " 16 - " " Chichestin P. " - " 14 - " " (male) Of course, the above does not prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that William F. was a son of the Lemuel (Samuel) J. PAGE with whom he was living.....and it would be much better to get a will, probate or other record stating a father-son relationship to cement the lineage. However, this will give researchers something to go on to prove this beyond a shadow of a doubt. Perhaps there's such a record in the Henry Co., MO courthouse. According to the records of descendants, William F.(Franklin) PAGE's first wife was Susan HICKMAN and she died in 1865. I don't have all of the deeds listed below, but I will list all that appear to belong to this William F. PAGE and give one of these deeds that Eleanor Poindexter of Russellville, KY (Logan Co.) abstracted for me some years ago. The Logan Co., KY Deed Index shows the following transactions involving a William F. and Susan PAGE: 1852 - HICKMAN & MORGAN to Susan PAGE Bk. 31, p. 253 1856 - Wm. F. & Susan B. PAGE to James T. Boyd " 35, p. 20 1857 - William F. & Susan B. PAGE to Martin Finch " 36, p. 29 Deed Bk. 31, p. 253: (surnames capitalized by me) Margaret HICKMAN, widow of Hope H. Made: 29 Nov 1851 HICKMAN, Samuel MORGAN & wf., Recorded: 5 Feb 1952 Martha (Hickman) of Logan Co. (by Com.) to Susan PAGE, wf. of Wm. of Logan Co., KY For $1.00 - 56 1/4 acres of land on Spring Creek bounded by the lands of Winlock, Morgan, Levi Moore, Burr, Harden & Boyd, Hamilton and Hickman Mill Road. (some of these names did not have a first name attached) Wits.: E. Burr, Sr. A. S. Winlock Levi Moore Deed Bk. 35, p. 20 (I don't have this deed, but the Index shows that it was for 18 acres of land on Spring Creek. Deed Bk. 36, p. 29 (I don't have this deed, but the Index shows that it was for 38 1/2 acres on Spring Creek. Then, there are no more deeds involving this William F. and Susan B. PAGE in the Deed Indexes. Perhaps one or both of the last two deeds will show where William F. and Susan B. lived at the time they executed these deeds. As for Lemuel J. PAGE who appears to be the father of William F. PAGE: Lemuel J. PAGE was b. ca. 1802 (per census). He md. Susan THOMAS in Logan Co., KY on 29 Mar 1827. Lemuel was a deacon in the Missionary Baptist Church in Henry Co., MO where he had moved about the time that you said your William F. PAGE had gone to MO. Lemuel's death date has been reported as 1 Sep 1850 at age 68 yrs., 8 mos., 2 days. I think that, in light of his birthdate, should be 1870, not 1850. At any rate, he is buried near Huntingdale, Henry Co., MO....Dan Page says that he is buried in the New Zion Baptist Church cemetery. Susan THOMAS was b. 18 Feb 1806 in VA and died 31 Sep 1861 in Henry Co., MO at age 55 yrs., 9 mos. 13 days. She is also buried in the same cemetery. Their children were: Margaret Ann PAGE, b. ca. 1829 in Logan Co., KY md. Granville CROSS on 1 May 1851 William F. PAGE (yours), b. ca. 1830 in KY, d. ? in MO). He md.: 1) Susan HICKMAN who died in 1865 2) Malissa KINSTRY - md. 14 Sep 1865 3) Mary A. HENSLEY - md. 5 Sep 1873 4) Sophia F. SMITH - md. 1 Mar 1881 The Logan Co., KY Deed Indexes show the following for Lemuel J. PAGE: 1826 - Samuel Parsons to Lemuel PAGE - 38 acres on Big Whippoorwill Creek - Deed Bk. O, p. 66 1837 - William A. Bagby & wf. Sarah to Lemuel PAGE - 115 acres (no description given) - Deed Bk. V, p. 470 1838 - Lemuel J. PAGE to Bird Price - 96 1/4 acres on Big Whippoorwill Creek - Deed Bk. V, p. 466 1855 - Lemuel & Susan PAGE to Thompson Harding - 140 acres (no description given) - Deed Bk. 33, p. 575 The above deeds show that Lemuel J. PAGE was the grantee for a total of 153 acres of land in Logan Co., KY....but he sold 236 1/4 acres....a difference of 83 1/4 acres. I have not gone into this to find out where the other land came from, but it may have come from his share of his father's land when it was divided....or else a deed whereby he was the grantee could have been missed. >From these deeds, it would appear that Lemuel & Susan PAGE sold their land in Logan Co., KY and went to Henry Co., MO first and then William F. and his wife Susan followed a few years later. HOWEVER, the tax records of Logan Co., KY and Henry Co., MO might shed more light on just when each of them left KY and when they first showed up in MO. It was not unusual that Lemuel and some of his family went to Henry Co., MO. Lemuel's cousin, Joshua PAGE had already gone there by 1835. Joshua was the son of Anderson PAGE (E-6-2) in Part #17 of my PAGE-L Posts. Anderson, in turn, was the brother of Lemuel's father, William PAGE (E-6-6) in Part #20. William PAGE's wife, Christian HODGES, was the dau. of Johnson HODGES and Lucy PAGE (E-2?) covered in "new" Part #12. Confused enough yet???? Here's William Franklin PAGE's ancestry in a nutshell: Exolheath PAGE, d. ca. 1778-1780 in Goochland Co., VA - md. Christian (her last name unknown at this time) - among others. Exolheath is covered in Parts #2 and 3 of my PAGE-L Posts. Exolheath had, among others: James PAGE, b. ca. 1742-47 in VA, d. ca. 1796-1797 in Goochland Co., VA - md. Mary Ann, dau. of William ENGLAND, on 26 Mar 1765 in Goochland Co., VA - among others. James is covered in Part #17 of my PAGE-L Posts. James and Mary Ann had, among others: (the above two persons are also my ancestors) William PAGE, b. 26 Oct 1776 in Goochland Co., VA, d. in 1850 in Logan Co., KY (his estate was settled on 2 Feb 1852 there) - md. Christian HODGES (dau. of Johnson HODGES and Lucy PAGE). This Lucy PAGE was probably (not sure) a dau. of Exolheath PAGE, above - among others. William is covered in Part #20 of my PAGE-L Posts. I have also included information about Johnson HODGES and Lucy PAGE in the "new" Part #12 of these Posts. William and Christian had, among others: Lemuel J. PAGE, b. ca. 1802 in Goochland Co., VA, d. 1 Sep 1850/1870? in Henry Co., MO - md. Susan THOMAS on 29 Mar 1827 in Logan Co., KY - among others. Lemuel is merely listed in Part #20 of my PAGE-L Posts. He and his wf. had, among others: William Franklin PAGE (now you know the rest of the story) I go into the first three generation of these families in more detail in my PAGE-L posts, listed above. If you don't know how to get them, E-Mail me personally and I'll send you the instructions as I posted 49 Parts on the PAGE families of Goochland Co., VA in 1998 and 1999. Dolores in California

Holmes, we learn that Page was an occupational name given to youths of the gentry class between seven and fourteen years of age while receiving their education to become a squire and then a knight. "The origin of the word "Page" is supposed to be Italian for "Paggie" or from the Latin "Pagius," meaning a boy or youth attending the king. Boys of noble parentage who were at the royal court were called "Pages." It was quite an honor much sought after, as the surroundings and the acquaintances made at court were valuable to personal advancement. A course of training in courtesy, etiquette, and diplomacy was given these boys, and the place where they lived and trained was called a "Page Home," shortened to "Pageham," also sometimes written "Pagham" or "Pagenham." Different spellings are attributed to the fact that few people could read or write. Members of the nobility hired a scribe to perform these services for them and signed the papers with a signet ring or stamp which bore their crest or insignia.(1.) This was another important reason for heraldry and coats-of-arms. "Another interesting possible source of the Kentish Page family name may come from the old word "Pa-age" or passage money; a tax anciently levied on travelers bound for the crusades at Rochester, county Kent.(2.) "Pagham (Pagenharn) and Packenham "There is some confusion between Pageham and Pakenham; but one family was named from Pageham on the south coast of England near Chichester and Bognor Regis in county Sussex, and the other from Pakenham in county Suffolk, about five miles east of Bury St. Edmunds and seventeen miles north of Sudbury. "The first known mention of the name de [of] Pageham (or de Pagham) was a John de Pagham (d. 1158), the fourth bishop of Worcester, England, from 1151-1157. He was probably a native of Pagham, Sussex. He had been one of the clerks under Archbishop Theobald, and was consecrated by him to the See of Worcester on 4 March 1151. He assisted at the consecration of Roger to the See of York on 10 October 1154, and at the coronation of Henry II on 19 December of the same year. He gave the churches of Bensington, Oxfordshire, and Turkdean, Gloucester, to the monastery of Osney. He died at Rome, it is said, on 31 March 1158. (3.) "The names of Walter Page and Johnnes le Page (from the vicinity of Northamptonshire) appear in the Close Rolls in the year 1231 (15 Henry III), and the name Serlonem (Serlonis) Page appears in 1234 (18 Henry 111).(4) "According to research done in England circa 1917 by Charles Nash Page of Point Lomas, California, in the year 1256-1257 King Henry III of England sent a Hugo de Pageham, of Ebor [sic, Eboracum, an ancient Roman city which is present-day York, England, where there was a palace of Henry III], Yorkshire on an important mission to the King of Spain. He was supposedly knighted in 1260 by Henry III, and his title was proclaimed by the heralds giving notice that he was subsequently to be known as Sir Hugo Page. From that time on, Page was adopted as his family name.(5) [I found no record of his knighthood!] "Hugonem Pageham and Roberturn de la Barre are referred to in Thomas Rymer's "Foedera (Acts of the Kings of England)" in 41st (year of the reign of) Henry III, A.D. 1257, where the letter to the King of Spain is written in Latin. The only short reference to the couriers themselves is also in Latin dated 15 Sep. 1257...." 1. Does anyone have any general or interesting information on where the name Page began? Pat in California
Seeking a link to a Page male born in Kentucky probably in the late 1700's, who married a female also born in Kentucky. One of their son's is Alexander E. Page, born in Kentucky in 1821, county unknown. 1846 Alexander Page married in Knox County, Illinois. 1869 Alexander Page moved to Jasper CO. Missouri. About 1885 he moved to Clark CO. Washington. Alexander must have siblings, who are they??? Children of Alexander Page are: Mary Jane (Page) Dawson b1848, Lydia Ann (Page) Boyer b1850, Serrilda F. (Page) Dawson b1851, Marthy Jane Page b1855, William E. Page b1859, John T or E Page b1861, Morris G. Page b1863, Alonzo Newton Page b1864, James O. Page b1867, Alva Grant Page b1869. Thank you, Cathy (Page) Jennings
My ggrandfather, Sidney E. PAGE was born abt 1828 in Vermont. In 1850, he married Lisette M. BAGLEY in Pawlet, Vermont. Sidney E. PAGE probably died in or near Cambridge, Furnas County, Nebraska, sometime between 1888 and 1900. Does anyone have access to newspaper obits for this time period? I have been looking for years, for proof of his death. Would gladly pay for his obit. I thank you all in advance. Brenda Page Hare Cedar Rapids, Iowa
gggrandparents Howard Page (dob abt 1827, NY) and Elizabeth Van Alstine Page (DOB Aug. 30, 1836 in New York) both died in Decatur, Burt County Nebraska. I have a brief notice of death for Howard, but not for Elizabeth who died sometime prior to her husband, perhaps in 1888. I am searching for notice of Elizabeth's death and an exact date of death. I have Elizabeth's mother's obit as well as one the obit of one of Howard and Elizabeth Page's son's, Charles Willard Page, who died in 1934 in Dallas, SD. I posted this query once before, and made a little progress. However, I thought I would try another route -- I know that there were other Page families living in Decatur, Nebraska at the same time who may be related. Is anyone else researching Page families who lived in Decatur at about the same time, (1870s - early 1900s) and who has information on these families? Pat MacE in California
I have a photo of Mabel L. Page that I would like to see back with her family. I bought at an antique store and will return to anyone interested in this family for my cost plus postage. $4.00 On the back of the photo it says Chick-a-dee!! Mabel L. Page, N.H.S. '08. The company that produced the photo was F. M. Goss of Newburport. Please me email me directly if you are interested in this photo as I am not a Page descendant and will not remain on this list. Rueben Page appears as the head of family #1307 in dwelling # 1285 in the 1850 Federal Census of Harris Twp., Centre Co., PA. It states he was age 25 and a laborer. Unfortunately his state of birth is omitted. His wife is shown as Mary Page, age 23, state of birth also omitted. There were no other PAGEs or KUHNs enumerated in that county in that census. There were two PAGEs indexed as Heads of Households in Harris Twp., Centre Co., PA in the 1860 Federal Census: Rueben Page on p. 560; and GEORGE PAGE on p. 555. The Centre Hall, PA mentioned is in Potter Twp. which adjoins Harris Twp.. Judging from the name he gave to son Joseph K(uhn) Page, b. 3 Mar. 1869 his father may have been Joseph Page of the Fairfield, New Jersey line of Pages that descended from the immigrant Robert Page from county Norfolk, Eng.. At least one of his descendants did go to Penn. from New Jersey in the 1800's. George W. Page (of the George Page of Branford, Conn., line of Pages).
