    3. To PAGES'S with Massachusetts ancestory: I found this recently in "HISTORY OF VENANGO CO, PA" "On the 9th of May, 1867, Mr. Macky married Lauretta Barnes Fay of Columbus, Ohio. Her father, Cyrus Paige Fay, was the youngest son of Daniel Fay, of Hardwick, Massachusetts, who was born December 14, 1752, and served in Colonel Larned's regiment during the Revolutionary war. Her maternal great-grandfather, Timothey Paige, was born in Hardwick, Massachusetts, May 24, 1727, and died April 26, 1796. He held several positions of a civil nature and served during the Revolution with the rank of colonel." ( there is more if anyone makes a connection)

    2. The Howlands
    3. Hi David, The name Ruben Page is not familiar to me. My page family has name like: Thomas, Joseph, Richard, Nancy, James, William, Arthur, and Frank. There are no Ruben's in the PA census index for the years 1800 through 1840. I found a Ruben Page on the 1850 census index for PA. He is in Center Co. Harris Twp. P. 103. (would have to look up the roll#.) This census would tell you what state Ruben was born in., and his wife as well. If any of the 5 children were under 10 in 1880 you might be able to find them on the 1880 soundex (otherwise you would have to look through the whole county which is not indexed.) The 1800 would also tell you where Ruben was born and where Ruben's father and mother were born. (same info. for other family members as well.) You might also have luck on the 1900, for Ruben and 1910 and 1920 for Mary. They are indexed and easy to use. Have you tried to get the death record for Ruben and Mary? Since they died in the 20th century, and you know where they died the records should be easy to obtain. The death record should have the name of Ruben's parents, as long as the informant knew the names. Hope this helps. I will keep an eye out for your family members, but I am mostly researching in Western PA. 3. Hi Steve, My Pennsylvania Page Family looks like this: My great-grandfather was: Thomas P. Page (b. abt. 1838 probably Warren CO PA.) He had a brother Richard P. Page, and a sister Nancy. Thomas then shows up on the tax rolls in Venango County, PA from 1870 to 1879. Thomas P. Page married to Elizabeth Pilling (b. abt. 1843, PA). Births of their children: (from 1870 Venango CO PA and 1880 McKean CO PA census records) James Page 1865 William Page 1867 Frank (Francis) Page 1873 (Jan 2, my grandfather) Arthur Page 1875 I have located the whole family on the 1880 Census in McKean County, PA, but I can not find them after that time. I have just recently located Thomas P. Page's Parents on the 1850 census, Warren CO, PA. It looks like this: Joseph Page 39 Debra 37 Nancy 7 Thomas P. 13 Richard 10 Sarah J. Patterson 18 I found Joseph L. with the same family profile as the 1850, on the 1840 census in Warren County, PA. Sometimes I have Joseph as being born in NY and other times in PA. Thomas and siblings all born in PA. At this point I suspect that Joseph L.'s father was Thomas J. Page, but I haven't proven that yet. I have few living PAGE relatives and at this point I know more about our ancestors that anyone else. I have had to work mostly from census records, as I have not been able to locate vital records for any but my grandfather Frank. Because there is such a wide gap in generations (I was born in 1951 and my grandfather was born in 1873, I am immediately back before vital records were recorded officially in PA. My PAGE branch is dwindling; the only male left is my brother, Laird Charles Page (b.1952, NYC, NY) who has a 6 y.o. so, Nicholas Laird Page (b.1994 Fayetteville, AR.) So, to answer your question, I don't know where my PAGE line originated, but I keep working. I keep hoping I will find someone from another branch of my line who can help me out. I keep all my messages in hope that later on I will find a connection. Thanks for writing; you make Australia seem very close! Susan Page Howland in MA.

    1. [PAGE] DNA testing of ancestors
    2. Michael Page
    3. Following on from the discussion a week or two back fellow PAGE researchers who don't receive Eastman's newsletter may be interested in the attached, which is in this week's edition. Michael Page (Peterborough, Cambs, UK) ========================================================= Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter ============================================================== - More on Oxford Ancestors Two weeks ago I wrote an article in this newsletter about Professor Brian Sykes' success at using genetics to trace a family tree. Professor Sykes did not trace the lineage of each and every person in the tradition of most genealogists. However, he did use DNA analysis to prove descent from a common, although unnamed, ancestor. The last paragraph that I wrote said: Sykes has patented the test for an association between a surname and the Y chromosome, and, with the university, started up a company to perform the tests. "We are probably going to call it Oxford Ancestors," he said. Sykes made good on his prediction and even has a Web site in place now. This site proclaims: Oxford Ancestors is a new venture, backed by Oxford University, to harness the power and precision of modern genetics in the service of genealogy. DNA, the genetic material, flows from one generation to the next with no need for written records. Oxford Ancestors builds on over a decade of research into human populations and their origins carried out by Professor Bryan Sykes, Professor of Human Genetics, and his team in the world-renowned Institute of Molecular Medicine at Oxford. Oxford Ancestors is the first organisation in the world to offer these DNA-based services in genealogy. Sykes and his new company are now selling three products: MatriLine: MatriLine uses mitochondrial DNA to probe into the deep past. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA for short) is unique in being inherited exclusively through the maternal line, so revealing a female genealogy which has been virtually invisible up to now. Research in Oxford during the past decade has placed all mtDNA genetic fingerprints within an overall evolutionary framework going back 150,000 years. MatriLine locates you within that framework and interprets your deep maternal ancestry, linking you - if your roots are in Europe - to one of seven women: Ursula, Tara, Helena, Katrine, Velda, Xenia or Jasmine. MyMap MyMap is a program developed by Oxford Ancestors researchers to map out the current geographical distribution of any surname. These maps present the precise locations of individuals with the same name revealing, for instance, local clustering around the historical origin or significant dispersion events. These can be quite useful for single name studies. MaleMatch MaleMatch compares Y-chromosome genetic fingerprints. Y- chromosomes are passed down from father to son, so any males connected by exclusively paternal links will have identical, or near identical, Y-chromosome genetic fingerprints. MaleMatch can be used to establish, or disprove, a paternal link between individuals. Surname researchers will find MaleMatch especially useful in testing different branches with the same name. MaleMatch seems to be based upon the technology that I wrote about two weeks ago. 3. Hi Ed, I know with my research it is the little clues that can sometimes lead me forward. In my case I have no other family members to bounce ideas and names off of and have had to rely on intense detective work and good puzzle skills. I will keep you in mind while I do my research. I don't have the name Rice, or Rire's in my collection. I have found that unless one can locate a death, birth or marriage record the chances of coming across a maiden name of a female relative is very difficult. If you haven't looked at it already you might be interested in this web site: http://pages.prodigy.net/mapage/homepage/index.htm. Mark Page writes, "I am researching the PAGE family in FAYETTE COUNTY, PA. My ancestor Joseph Page Sr. moved from Monmouht Co, NJ to Connellsville, Fayette County, PA in 1800. He had at least 7 children: Timothy, Jonathan, William, John, Joseph Jr., Samuel and Hannah. Most of the children's descendants appear to have moved to Ohio, Illinois and Indiana." I photocopied the census index (it is hard bound) for PA 1800 to 1850. There are a lot of Williams, mostly in the Philadelphia area. Some are Mark Page's relatives. Other "W" names are Wilian (1820 Philadelphia); Wallace (1840 Crawford CO); Warren (1840 Bradford CO.); Warren (1850 Bradford CO.); Washington (1850 Warren CO., Pittsfield Twp. 32 y.o. lumberman b. PA $400 value of real estate owned, enumerated with: head of household: Len Osborn 26 b.Canada; Chloi(?sp) Osborne 20 y.o. b. NY; Mary Osborne 2 y.o. b.NY) The following is something I came across while doing research in Venango and Warren County Formation of Warren County, PA Roads and Early Transportation The first settlers found their way into the wilderness of Warren County following Indian trails and surveyor's lines. Others came by canoe, launching from Port Allegheny, floating down from Olean, New York to the mouth of the Conewango and settling along the beechwoods of Pine Grove and Sugar Grove Townships. Provisions and other supplies were brought in keel boats from Pittsburgh to Warren and transported by canoe from Warren to stations further up the river. The road leading from Pittsfield through Wrightsville and Lottsville to the New York border was opened in 1814. The old "county road", as it was called for a number of years, from Owen's Ferry on the Conewango Creek to Lottsville by way of Sugar Grove, was opened in 1816; trees and underbrush were cut to a degree sufficient that an ox-team and sled could pass over it. Between 1818-1819 the first state road was opened through Freehold Township. The first stage coach arrived in Warren from Dunkirk, New York on May 24, 1826. In 1840 one could go by stage from Buffalo to Pittsburgh in less than three days. The steamboat "Allegheny", built mainly by Archibald Tanner and David Dick of Meadville, opened up steamboat navigation on the Allegheny River. However, it made only one trip, from Warren to Olean, New York in 1830. The Sunbury and Erie Railroad was chartered and organized in 1837 and surveyed and located through Warren borough in 1838; the first bridge across the Allegheny River was built in Warren in 1838. see: http://www.rootsweb.com/~pawarren/history.htm The Venango Path was a migration trail in northwestern Pennsylvania followed by settlers on the move north from the town of Kittanning to the shores of Lake Erie. From there the travelers could join the Lake Shore Path to continue east to New York or west to Ohio and beyond. Along the way from Kittanning, people following the Venango Path ventured through territory now lying in Butler, Venango, Forest, Warren, and Erie counties. Some may have been born or died along the way. Others may have taken time out from their journey to marry. A few families may have taken a rest from their trip to purchase a farm and work it for a few years before continuing, while others sold their family farms to join the northern and western migration. In such cases, the records available in these counties can be invaluable to anyone whose ancestors traveled this path on their way to a new life. But trying to track information across several counties can be an extremely tedious chore. For those of us with Internet access the first question might just be, "How can the Net help in this case?" see: http://www.everton.com/oe3-4/venango.htm Good luck with your research! Susan

    3. Hello Barbara, I don't think we are related, but I do have some information for you. It is always exciting to find information about one's family, but it is also exciting to find information for others. You may already have this information, but I have an abstract from your grandparent's marriage license. If you already have this information I won't duplicate it, but if you don't I will transcribe what I have. I also have an abstract of her obituary, with a note that she was buried in the Grove Hill Cemetery. My Grandfather, Frank (Francis) Albert Page was born in Cherry Run, near Oil City, Venango Co, PA. in 1873. His father is Thomas P. Page b.abt. 1837 PA (probably Warren County.) His Mother is Elizabeth Pilling, b. abt. 1843 PA. Frank has brothers William born abt. 1867, PA. James, and Arti, all born PA My grandfather ran away from home in PA as a teenager and ended up in Rochester NY. I don't know what brought him there, and he didn't tell anyone anything much about his family, and seemed to want to sever his roots. My Page family has some NY and maybe CT roots, but I really can't find out at this point where they were before PA. Thomas P. Page's father was Joseph L. Page and I think Joseph's father was Thomas J. Page who I found out recently has a long history in Warren County, PA. I suspect my great-grandfather went to Oil City to try and cash in on the oil rush, but that was a boom/bust situation and he was in McKean County by 1880. At that point I have lost the family until I pick up my grandfather in Rochester. I have some historical information on Venango County, but nothing specific to the Pages. I remembered your grandparent's marriage record because another name I am searching is Spillane (very close to Splane), but I am back in Ireland with that one. If I can help further let me know.
