Quoting, with the footnotes renumbered, from pp. 27-28 of my book, "The Descendants of Robart Page of the King's House - The Probable English Origins, Ancestors, and Relatives of George Page of Branford Connecticut and Thomas Page of Saco in the Province of Maine" written and published by me in 1992: "Origins of the Page Name "From "The Dictionary of the Ancestral Heads of the New England Families 1620-1700," by Frank R. Holmes, we learn that Page was an occupational name given to youths of the gentry class between seven and fourteen years of age while receiving their education to become a squire and then a knight. "The origin of the word "Page" is supposed to be Italian for "Paggie" or from the Latin "Pagius," meaning a boy or youth attending the king. Boys of noble parentage who were at the royal court were called "Pages." It was quite an honor much sought after, as the surroundings and the acquaintances made at court were valuable to personal advancement. A course of training in courtesy, etiquette, and diplomacy was given these boys, and the place where they lived and trained was called a "Page Home," shortened to "Pageham," also sometimes written "Pagham" or "Pagenham." Different spellings are attributed to the fact that few people could read or write. Members of the nobility hired a scribe to perform these services for them and signed the papers with a signet ring or stamp which bore their crest or insignia.(1.) This was another important reason for heraldry and coats-of-arms. "Another interesting possible source of the Kentish Page family name may come from the old word "Pa-age" or passage money; a tax anciently levied on travelers bound for the crusades at Rochester, county Kent.(2.) "Pagham (Pagenharn) and Packenham "There is some confusion between Pageham and Pakenham; but one family was named from Pageham on the south coast of England near Chichester and Bognor Regis in county Sussex, and the other from Pakenham in county Suffolk, about five miles east of Bury St. Edmunds and seventeen miles north of Sudbury. "The first known mention of the name de [of] Pageham (or de Pagham) was a John de Pagham (d. 1158), the fourth bishop of Worcester, England, from 1151-1157. He was probably a native of Pagham, Sussex. He had been one of the clerks under Archbishop Theobald, and was consecrated by him to the See of Worcester on 4 March 1151. He assisted at the consecration of Roger to the See of York on 10 October 1154, and at the coronation of Henry II on 19 December of the same year. He gave the churches of Bensington, Oxfordshire, and Turkdean, Gloucester, to the monastery of Osney. He died at Rome, it is said, on 31 March 1158. (3.) "The names of Walter Page and Johnnes le Page (from the vicinity of Northamptonshire) appear in the Close Rolls in the year 1231 (15 Henry III), and the name Serlonem (Serlonis) Page appears in 1234 (18 Henry 111).(4) "According to research done in England circa 1917 by Charles Nash Page of Point Lomas, California, in the year 1256-1257 King Henry III of England sent a Hugo de Pageham, of Ebor [sic, Eboracum, an ancient Roman city which is present-day York, England, where there was a palace of Henry III], Yorkshire on an important mission to the King of Spain. He was supposedly knighted in 1260 by Henry III, and his title was proclaimed by the heralds giving notice that he was subsequently to be known as Sir Hugo Page. From that time on, Page was adopted as his family name.(5) [I found no record of his knighthood!] "Hugonem Pageham and Roberturn de la Barre are referred to in Thomas Rymer's "Foedera (Acts of the Kings of England)" in 41st (year of the reign of) Henry III, A.D. 1257, where the letter to the King of Spain is written in Latin. The only short reference to the couriers themselves is also in Latin dated 15 Sep. 1257...." 1. I am seeking ANY information about the parents of Solomon Hardy Page b. Nov. 11, 1846, died Jan 15. 1916 married Elizabeth Jane Davidson, 1867. I believe Solomon's parents to be Josiah Page b. ca. 1805 in North Carolina and Bersheba Phelps. They were married in Georgia in about 1840. Can anyone help me with this line? I'm really stuck. Solomon Page is my gg grandfather. Thanks in advance! Pat Holsten
I am looking for information on a Charles Page. I am not sure when he was born but I do believe he was from New Hampshire and married Mary Sinclair. I know they had nine children, of which I know two of their names, Mary and Edwin. Their daughter, Mary was born in New Hampshire. Charles Page died in 1865. They lived in St. Charles, Minnesota and Charles Page died when their youngest child was ten months old. He was a Quaker minister. Mary Sinclair moved with her children to a small town in Linn County, Iowa, then known as Western. They lived at this place until the youngest child was 12 years of age and this date was August 1876. Mary Sinclair and the youngest son, Edwin then lived in Ida Grove, IA for a few years and then started farming northeast of town. Any information that you can give me on Charles and Mary Sinclair Page would be appreciated. Robin Gambaiana
Would anyone have a stray Charles Page on their tree? He would be born about 1819/1820. The information I have on him says NH but there is no record from there so far. I am wondering if he was born in Mass. He ended up in Exeter about 1840 and died in the Civil War. Any assistance greatly appreciated. Mahalo , Kevin

Subject: Which John is this?? >From Book: The Page Family--American Genealogical Research Institute 1975 John Page (April 17, 1743-October 11, 1808): Revolutionary patriot, congressman, and governor of Virginia. Born in Gloucester County, Va, John was the son of Mann and Alice (Grymes) Page. Page attended the College of William and Mary and there became the friend of Thomas Jefferson. Widowed by his first wife, Frances Burwell, Page remarried in 1789, Margaret Lowther. Both women bore him a total of twenty children. Page began his political career in the Colonial House of Burgesses. He served as Lt Gov. under Patrick Henry and helped grame the Constitution of Va in 1776. He ran for governor against Thomas Jefferson in 1779 but lost. After serving in the Va assembly for many years, he went to Congress where he spent eight years. Page supported Jefferson in his Presidential bid in 1800 and in 1802 succeeded James Monroe as governor of Virginia. After serving three terms as governor, he moved to a minor federal post to which Jefferson appointed him. ???? Sound familiar??? Have all of his children been identified??? Thanks Dianne
Dianne, The answers to your questions are: John PAGE who d. in 1808 was a descendant of Col. John PAGE of the so-called "Prominent PAGE Family" of VA in this lineage: Col. John PAGE of James City Co., VA - md. Alice LUCKENS Col. Matthew PAGE of "Rosewell", Gloucester Co., VA - md. Mary MANN, only child of John & Mary MANN - after Matthew's death, Mary md. 2) (Lawyer) John PAGE Mann PAGE of "Rosewell", Gloucester Co., VA & his 2nd wf. Judith CARTER, dau. of Robert CARTER Mann PAGE of "Rosewell", Gloucester Co., VA & "Mannsfield", Spotsylvania Co., VA - his descendants, for some reason, are known as the "White PAGEs" - & his 1st wife Alice GRYMES of Middlesex Co., VA (Gov.) John PAGE (d. 1808) of "Rosewell", Gloucester Co., VA, d. 1808 and buried in Richmond, VA. He was md. twice and had a LARGE family The children of Gov. John PAGE: By his 1st wife, Fannie BURWELL, dau. of Col. Robert BURWELL: Mann PAGE - md. Elizabeth NELSON John PAGE - died in infancy Robert PAGE - died young, unmarried Sally Burwell PAGE - md. Wm. NELSON John PAGE - drowned at abt. 11 yrs. of age Alice Grymes PAGE - md. 1) Dr. John Augustine SMITH 2) Col. Robert NELSON & 3 more children who died in infancy By his 2nd wife, Margaret LOWTHER, dau. of William LOWTHER of Scotland and New York City, NY Margaret Lowther PAGE - md. 1) John H. BLAIR of Elmington, Hanover Co.. John William PAGE - died in infancy Barbara PAGE - never md. Lucy Burwell PAGE - md. Robert SAUNDERS of Williamsburg, VA I believe that the several PAGE-NELSON reunions held in VA in the past are of this family----mainly the family of the Gov. John PAGE's first marriage. Only two of Gov. John PAGE's sons married and had descendants: Mann and Francis. This information is partly from my personal research and partly from the book "Genealogy of the PAGE Family in Virginia" by Richard Channing Moore PAGE, M.D., Second Edition, 1965. This book has been reprinted, but I don't know where it can presently be purchased or the price. If I am wrong about any of this, would someone please correct me. Dolores
I ran across lots of old letters written to and from a PAGE family who lived in Maine circa 1900. These letters are for sale in an antique shop in Nashville TN. I am not a Page descendant but I am a family researcher and I know how valuable these letters could be to this family. I could not write specific names but a couple I remember are (Elizabeth) Lizzie and Starrward. The thought the spelling of Starrward was interesting. I guess this could be Stewart or some variation. The sad part of this is the letters and possibly other documents are priced between $5-7. I would think they would reduce the price if someone was interested. I would be glad to help the family retrieve these documents and possibly get an inventory of what exists. Judy Weaver
I forgot to mention in my previous message on "Rev. John PAGE????" that Norfolk Co. was created in 1691 from New Norfolk Co.. Princess Anne Co./now Virginia Beach was also created in 1691 from New Norfolk Co..
George & All, In response to your post on the Rev. John PAGE of Elizabeth City Co., VA as of 30 Jun 1680...for what it is worth on this subject.... Here is how Elizabeth City County was described in THE VIRGINIA GENEALOGIST, Vol. 9, p. 16: "The county was originally called Kissoughtan but the name was changed to Elizabeth City in 1619 or 1620. In 1636 the county of New Norfolk was created from the territory of Elizabeth City on the south of Hampton Roads. There were no changes in its boundaries thereafter until 1882 when the division line between Warwick and Elizabeth City was altered slightly in the vicinity of Newport News. The county has always been bounded on the north by York County and on the west by Warwick County." "Many of the records of Elizabeth City County before 1865 have been destroyed. Deeds and wills, recorded in the same volume, are preserved for 1689-99, 1715-21....." and later, not copied here. >From the above and the following deeds, it appears that the John PAGE whose deeds are given below lived in the part of Elizabeth City Co. that fell into New Norfolk Co. in 1636, so these deeds seem relevant to our discussion. I have not searched the available Elizabeth City Co. deeds as yet (1689-1699). My research into the records of Norfolk County, VA shows the following deeds involving a John PAGE (no "Rev. before his name). Whether or not this is the same man as the Rev. John PAGE that you mentioned, George, remains to be determined. All of these deeds are for the same land (50 acres of "Woodland ground" on the south side of Ireland's(?) Creek bordering the lands of William MANNING(?) and Richard NASH: Roger HODGIS/HODGES & wf. Mary to John PAGE Bk. 6, p. 57 (30 Dec 1695) Roger HODGES & wf. Mary to John PAGE Bk. 7, p. 3 (same date) John PAGE & wf. Elianor to John BALLENTINE Bk. 7, p. 5 (16 Aug 1703) Roger HODGES & wf. Mary to John PAGE Bk. 7, p. 39 (30 Dec 1695) John PAGE & wf. Elienor to John BALLENTINE Bk. 7, p. 40 (16 Aug 1703) The above is a case of the same two deeds being recorded several times. It is evident that this John PAGE purchased 50 acres of land from Roger and Mary HODGIS/HODGES in 1695 and transferred it to John BALLENTINE in 1703. The amount of money paid in each instance is not given. The deed "to" John PAGE only states that "a valuable consideration" was received for the land and the deed "from" John & Elianor/Elienor PAGE to BALLENTINE merely says that the land was "Assigned and Transferred" to BALLENTINE with no amount of money mentioned. I have not read the sparse court records that are available for this county from 1664-1699, but I've found no other records for this John PAGE in this county after 1703. John PAGE, Esq'r appears in the 1800 Land Tax List (courtesy of T.L.C. Genealogy, Miami Beach, FL) although I did not find him listed in the Personal Property Tax Lists (read from 1791-1812). People of that name appear in the censuses of 1820 onward, but they are evidently not related to the early John PAGE of the above deeds.
I am re-posting this message in the hopes someone can help, or use the info.. I have a photocopy of a Page Family Bible Record that I am trying to place or connect to a recognized New England Page family line. The Bible is dated 1824 and was owned by Mrs. A. R. Bartlett, Shelton (Conn. ?). It appears to be the Bible record of Riley & Betsey (Arnold) Page who were m. (prob. in Conn. in the vicinity of Putnam) on Jan. 6, 1821. It states Riley Page was b. on Nov. 24, 1800 and Betsey Arnold was b. on April 25, 1803. Their probable children are listed as: Caroline Page, b. May 24, 1822, m. Samuel Corbin in Sept. 1844. Rebecca Page, b. June 4, 1824, m. Manning Angell in May 1846. Sarah Ann Page, b. Mar. 13, 1826, m. Horatio Whipple Mar. 14, 1868 in Putnam, CT. Henry A. Page, b. Aug. 12, 1829, m. Mary Vinton in Nov. 1853. Edward C. Page, b. Feb. 24, 1833, m. Mahala Harris, Dec. 25, 1853. Alexander Page, b. Sept. 17, 1835, m. Cornelia L. Clark on Aug. 2, 1864. Elizabeth Page, b. Dec. 12, 1837, m. William Young, Nov. 29, 1859. Clara S. Page, b. Apr. 26, 1840, m. Eugene Hawkins, in Putnam, Conn.. James F. Page, b. Mar. 22, 1842, m. Ida E. Warren, Nov. 27, 1865. Edward L. Page, b. Aug. 7, 1844 [no m. data given]. George Page, b. Jan. 27, 1847, m. Christy Moffatt. Riley Page appears to also be listed with his siblings: Abigail Page, b. Aug. 7, 1782. Nicholas Page, b. May 14, 1784. David Page, b. Dec. 17, 1785. Rhodes Page, b. June 14, 1789. Joseph Page, b. Aug. 17, 1791. Frelove Page, b. Apr. 14, 1794. Stephen Page, b. July 15, 1796. Lucy Page, b. Jan. 23, 1799. Riley Page, b. Nov. 24, 1800. Martha Page, b. Apr. 1, 1803. Rachel Page, b. Sept. 9, 1805. Can anyone identify this family of siblings and tell me who the parents were?
