    1. Re: [PAGE] Joseph Page
    2. Read you post on your Joseph Page with much interest. I and several cousins have been searching for our Page line for a very long time. What caught my eye were several similarities between our Page lines. We are looking for a Josiah Page's family. He was born about 1805, either in NC or SC. He migrated through Early County, GA in the mid to late 1830s where he married a Phelps and moved on to Randolph County, GA where we found him in census reports for 1850 and 1860. We find no more record of him, but his children, for the most part, moved on to Polk/Pasco/Hernando counties of Florida. Given the birth date of your John and our Josiah, and your John's grandson being named Josiah, there is a possibility they could have been brothers. Of course Josiah isn't all that uncommon a name among the Page lines we've found, it might be a clue for further research. Sometimes you have to use back doors...if to can't find a fact to prove, start disproving the improbable. Sometimes the improbable really isn't. Have found several direct line ancestors I'd run into a wall on by looking for the spouse's parents and checking their migrations and related census reports, and in the same neighborhoods were my lines. Bill

    3. B. Norton, For what it is worth..... You might get some help on your Joseph PAGE by checking the message on the PAGE List on GenForum dated 9 Nov 1999 posted by Bobbi Lee. It was about the Duplin Co., NC PAGE family that went to Covington Co., MS. Another good place to look for early records of Duplin Co., NC is the book "The PAGE Family in North Carolina, 1684-1850" by Jesse M. Page, Jr., privately printed, 1987. There are quite a few records of Duplin Co., NC in this book. One record that it has is the marriage of your Joseph & Susan (CONNERLY) PAGE. It also has the marr. bond of another (or 1st marr. for your???) Joseph PAGE to Elizabeth BLAND in 1797. It is interesting that the witness in both marriages was the same man----Wm. DICKSON, who could have just been the clerk of the court as "C.C." is after his name. Dolores

    2. Hi Cathy (and Linda), My wife's line of PAGE's is found in the book "The Robert and Rachel Page Family" (1750-1827) of Goochland County, VA and Spartanburg, SC. This book is written by Donald W. Page. Unfortunately, none of your William's wife's are listed in the index. So, I assume that none of the William's in the index are the one that you seek. Sorry, that I couldn't help. In case you're interested in this book (dated 1992) write: Donald W. Page 3593 Thal Road Titusville, FL 32796 (407) 269-1605. The book cost me $53.50 on 1-28-99. I have been told there was a "Home" called Greenbrier in Goochland that belonged to the Harding family. Can anyone shed light on the marriage of Jesse and Polly???? I am trying to prove that this is the Jesse Page in Buckingham Co. until he disappears and "Mary A. Page" appears in 1840. Thanks in advance, Michael D. 3. I found a series of William BYRD Pages in the Col. John Page of Williamsburg, Virginia line of Pages; and the one about 1817 who married about 1840. "William Byrd Page, of Pagebrook, Clarke Co., VA eldest son of John Page, of the same place, and Maria H. Byrd, his wife, was b. there about 1790, and died 1st Sept., 1828, aged about 38 years. He married first, about 1812, at Westover, on James River, Charles City Co., VA. Evelyn Byrd Nelson, daughter of Judge William Nelson (a younger brother of Gov. Thomas Nelson, of Yorktown, VA, and Abby Byrd his wife. One of their children was: "Dr. William Byrd Page, eldest son, born about 1817, removed to Philadelphia, PA. He married about 1840, Celestine, the daughter of Samuel Davis of Louisiana. Children: (1) S. Davis Page, Comptroller of the City of Philadelphia and father of (a) Howard; (b) Ethel; and (c) William Byrd, the champion high jumper of the world; (2) Margaret, married Henry Harrison." 3. For those of you interested in the William Byrd PAGE who some think "may have been" the father of the James PAGE who md. Frances REYNOLDS in Bedford Co., VA in 1797---- There were several Wm. Byrd PAGEs of about the same age in VA at the same time. There is a mention of one of these men in THE VIRGINIA GENEALOGIST, Vol. 43, No. 1 (Jan-Mar, 1999): 67-68. This is a Chancery Ct. record in Richmond, VA dated 21 Mar 1821 and involves many names in the estate of William BYRD of "Westover", deceased. Another date of 3 Apr 1821 appears at the end of this long record. This record was merely abstracted in this magazine. It mentions many names and it's too long to quote here, but I will give the PAGE names mentioned: (information in parentheses added by me) John PAGE & wf. Maria H. (she was Maria H. BYRD, dau. of William BYRD, deceased and they lived at "Pagebrook", Clarke Co., VA) William Byrd PAGE & wf. Evelyn, "formerly Evelyn NELSON". William md. 2) Elizabeth Mayo ATKINSON. I have that William B. PAGE and his 1st wf. had three children and he and his 2nd wf. had two more children----none of them were James. I have found three other William Byrd PAGE men in my research. Here they are: Dr. William Byrd PAGE (b. ca. 1753), son of Honorable John PAGE and his wf. Jane BYRD, dau. of Col. William BYRD of "Westover". This Hon. John PAGE was of "North End" (also called the "Black PAGEs"), Gloucester/now Matthews Co., VA. I am not sure that the records that I have are correct for his children, but here are the names of the children that I have for him: Jane Byrd PAGE (b. ca. 1779) - md. Henry W. LOCKET William Byrd PAGE (b. ca. 1781) - md. Lucy SEGAR John Carter PAGE (b. ca. 1782) - md. Miss SEGAR This is the one who is said to have md. a Miss JONES and lived in Richmond, VA. Has anyone determined if this marriage is correct? This William appears to be the one of the Chancery record above????!!!! If so, he did not marry a Miss JONES. William Byrd PAGE (b. ca. 1781) - son of the above man William Byrd PAGE (b. ca. 1768) - md. Anne, d.o. Richard Henry LEE - lived at Fairfield, Frederick/now Clarke Co., VA - this William was a son of Mann PAGE of "Fairfield", Frederick/now Clarke Co.. William Byrd PAGE (b. ca. 1794) - son of the above couple - never md. In addition to the above, I found the following in census and tax records in VA----some may be the same people as above. I'm only listing those of the name found before 1810. There were more after that date, but we are concerned here only with those b. before 1800. CENSUS: Will B. PAGE - 1800 Tax List of the City of Alexandria William B. PAGE - 1810 Census of Petersburg Town (this is an Independent City/Town within Dinwiddie Co.) William B. PAGE - 1810 Census, Frederick Co. - this was most probably one of the ones in Fairfield, Frederick/Clarke Co. later William B. PAGE - 1830 Census of Henrico Co. - he is included here because he was age 40-50 in that census - he was not in the previous censuses of Henrico Co. - he may or may not be the William B. PAGE listed in the 1840 Census in the City of Richmond (which is an Independent City which lies within the boundaries of Henrico Co.) TAX: (only before 1830) William B. PAGE (also listed as William Byrd PAGE) - in Frederick Co. from 1810 onward - could be more than one of this name as "William B. PAGE heirs" is listed in 1813 and more without the "heirs" after that. One of these Williams must be the son of Mann PAGE of "Fairfield" in Frederick/later Clarke Co.. The other one was this Mann PAGE's brother, (Dr.?) William B. PAGE. Both Mann and (Dr.?) William B. PAGE were sons of Honorable John PAGE of "North End", Gloucester Co., VA. William B. PAGE's Est.(ate) listed in Clarke Co. from 1836 through 1841 and not after that Wm. Byrd PAGE listed in Petersburg Town/City in 1809 and 1810 only. Petersburg is right at the juncture of the counties of Prince George, Dinwiddie and Chesterfield. I welcome comments on the above as I may have figured some it out wrong. George....how about you or someone working on that branch of the PAGE families. Can anyone add to, subtract from, correct or argue with any of this? Warmly, Dolores

    3. Would anyone have any children for Aaron Page (27 July 1779)? He married Betsy Cilley 24 April 1805 in Epping NH. He is the son of John Page and Lydia Sanborn. He is emerging as the most likely candidate for the father of Charles Page , born abt. 1820, who lived in Epping and Exeter and married Lucy Tilton 2 April 1843 in Epping by Elias Snow. This appears to be a'lost' generation, a surprise as New England seems to have kept detailed records. Any help greatly appreciated. Mahalo , Kevin

    3. The following were extracted from Dr. R.C.M. Page's, "Genealogy of the Page Family in Virginia ...," First Edition, 1893, Second Edition printed in 1972, pp. 29-30, citing the Virginia Land Records indicated: A "Thomas Page received 281 1/2 acres on south side of Rappahannock River for transporting six persons (to Virginia) - Apr. 21, 1657, Land Records No. 4, p. 132." "Also same patentee - 500 acres - south side of Rappahannock River. Date 1662 L. R. No. 5, p. 246." "Thomas Page and others - 3075 acres in Rappahannock Co. 3rd Apr. 1667 - No. 6, p. 182." Same 783 acres in rap. Co. 16 immigrants 3 Aug. 1667. L.R. No. 5. p. 183." A Captain Thomas Page of that era was in the shipping business because on 11 Nov. 1661 he wrote a letter from Deptford (port on the Thames River), Kent, England to the Navy Commission requesting that his stores be expedited in preparation for a voyage. [Cal. of Patent Rolls, Charles II, Domestic, Vol. XLIV, p. 142]. On 10 Dec. 1662, the next year, he issued a certificate as to the ability of Thomas Wadland to be master of the "Nightingale." [Ibid., Vol. XXXIV, p. 572.] Apparently Thomas Page, as well as Col. John Page of Virginia and a Gregory Page, were part owners in vessels that were active in the East India Company, and were trading with Virginia. Immigrants were transported for minor offenses from England to Virginia to work on the plantations, and Tobacco was hauled back to England (Despite the Surgeon General's Warning about smoking! This commerce was the start of "Big Tobacco" in America, which is now fair game for all the people who want to be rewarded for their bad habit over the years despite the Surgeon General's warning!) 3. Dolores et. al., I'm descended from John PAGE and Mary "Polly" EUBANK(S), who married in Warren Co., KY in 1806 -- as are Mitchell Page, Michael Bradley and Barbara Watson. After Warren Co., John and Polly lived in Humphreys Co., Perry Co., Carrol Co., and Gibson Co. I'm not aware of when they may have lived in Wilson Co. We've pretty much detailed John and Polly's lives (and their) descendants from 1806 to present (exceptions: Polly's date of death and John's second wife's maiden name). However, we know nothing about John's father (also John PAGE), other than he died in SC in 1803. His wife's name was either Anna or Hannah. John Sr. owned land in Newberry Co., SC, but his will was probated in Laurens Co. John Jr. was born in 1783, possibly in SC, and died in 1849 in Lockhart, TX. Some of his grandchildren by Leander Berry PAGE moved from Lockhart to Kennett, MO, after 1872 with their mother, Mary Manson White PAGE. Would appreciate hearing from someone with more insight into the origins of John Sr. and Anna/Hannah. Timothy PAGE Searson Dallas, TX

    3. Hi, Dan, Thanks for the info from The Prairie Gleaner. It provides some new information that might eventually help us on the perplexing ancestry of the Axel Heath/Axelheath PAGE of Amherst Co., VA, Warren Co., KY and Lafayette Co., MO.. Yes, I've studied the Warren Co., KY PAGE families in depth. There were at four male PAGE families there by the early 1800's: John PAGE - there in 1806 & 1807 - md. Mary EUBANK(S) there on 19 May 1806 - he lived in Wilson Co., TN for a time. James W. PAGE - there in 1806 & 1807 - md. Sarah Ann CHISM there on 12 Sep 1806 - left Warren Co. after 1807 and went to TN, finally settling in Bibb Co., AL The above were brothers and sons of John PAGE who died in 1803 or 1804 in Laurens Co., SC - they also had some sisters) Axel Heath PAGE - there by 1811 (no tax list in 1810) through 1824 - went there from Amherst Co., VA and moved to Lafayette Co., MO - with that first name and the fact that at least one of his descendants md. one of the descendants of another Goochland Co., VA PAGE family, there's a good chance that he descends from one of the families from that County in VA. Lin(d)sey PAGE - there by 1811-12 from Amherst Co., VA - his marr. bond was filed in Amherst Co., VA in 1793 for his forthcoming first marr. to Mary ("Polly") CAMPBELL - he md. 2) Polly DUNCAN on 7 Oct 1808 in Nelson Co., VA. Lindsey died in Warren Co., KY sometime before July 1822 leaving under age children. He was in the Amherst Co. tax lists from 1795-1801 and 1806-1807 and then in the Nelson Co. tax lists from 1809-1810. He must have gone from there directly to Warren Co., KY. The Joseph and Axel PAGE who md. COUTS girls were sons of the Axel Heath PAGE of Amherst Co., VA, Warren Co., KY and Lafayette Co., MO. The elder Axel Heath PAGE md. first in 1807 in Amherst Co., VA, but he doesn't appear in any of the tax lists there. The question is: Where was he from mid- 1807 until 1811? One has to wonder if Axel Heath and Lindsey might have been related in some way since they both came from Amherst Co., VA to Warren Co., KY within a short time of each other. There's a marriage of an Evan H. PAGE to Anna SWEENY in Warren Co. in 1835. With my imagination, this could be awfully close to the name "Exol H." and I've wondered if this is what it should have been. Does anyone have access to the original marriages or bonds to check on this for us? If so, this could be another son of that Lindsey PAGE and might be another clue of some relationship between Lindsey and Axel Heath....that "might" go back to the Goochland Co., VA PAGE Clan. Everyone comes to this study from a different angle....with different families who md. into their PAGE families. Sometimes this leads to answers that couldn't be reached any other way than by studying those "other" families. Is anyone working on the COUTS or SWEENY families who could help us? By getting all of our heads together on these PAGE families, maybe we'll solve more of the problems of getting them in their correct families. Dolores

    3. The Sept. 1981 issue of The Prairie Gleaner, Vol 12 #4, on pp. 113-115, has an article contributed by Mrs. Vivion Williams, Pattonsburg, MO 64670, entitled "LAFAYETTE COUNTY General information about the connected families of Barton, Couts, Collins, Pearson, Wright." The Prairie Gleaner is a publication of the West Central Missouri Genealogical Society and Library Inc. One paragraph is: Christly Couts Jr., had the following children: William Henry, born Tennessee, married Nancy Minton; Charity Couts married Tyra Jennings; Elizabeth Couts married Joseph PAGE; Lisle Couts married Mary Thomson; Sarah Jane Couts married Samuel Durosette; Basheba Couts married Andrew PAGE; Nancy Couts; Anthena Couts married Axel PAGE; Alzadah Couts married George Minton; Frances Couts married John David Jennings." According to the article, Christly Couts Jr. had married 1812 Fannie Barton, d.o. Bavister (or Bannister) Barton. The latter was in South Carolina in 1790, was in GA, then TN, then in Warren Co. KY about 1800, served in the War of 1812, and his will was filed 1813 in Warren Co. "While in Tennessee his family knew the family of Christley Couts Senior. Many intermarriages." Perhaps it is merely coincidental, but that location in Warren Co. KY places the Barton family, and perhaps others of interest, in rather close range of the descendants of Robert and Anderson Page who had come to south-central KY from SC. Some of these Pages relocated to west-central Missouri, and had many close interactions with those Pages connected to the Couts. I can't help but wonder whether anyone has looked at Warren Co., KY very closely for Page families. The article does not mention where in TN the Bartons and Couts familes were.
