Thank you Glenn. Yes, John Stouffer and Hannah Price are well-documented in the 1926 George Wanger book "Descendants of Rev. Jacob Price/Preisz", as well as elsewhere. John was a son of Abraham Stouffer who built the mill at Falling Spring -- basically he was a founder of Chambersburg, PA, after the Revolution. Hannah was a daughter of Rev. Jacob Price, and a gg granddaughter of Rev. Jacob Preisz who was an immigrant and founder of the Church of the Brethren (German Baptist) in early Pennsylvania. Their graves are at the Brethren church at Falling Spring which I've visited and photographed. But, the parentage of the Smith men is a total mystery, at least to me. In the 1880 census, they both indicated their parents were born in Pennsylvania, so I believe they were raised there in Franklin County, or else nearby -- perhaps over in York. Unfortunately, in the 1820 and 1830 head of household censuses, there were multiple Smith families who had 2 males of the correct age, so I can't narrow it down with the censuses. The John Stouffer family were "Dunkers" -- German Baptists, apparently, although John's parents and most of the rest of the Stouffers were Mennonites. I think he went over to the Dunkers when he married Hannah Price, who was from that denomination. So their children were undoubtedly raised in the Dunker church. That makes me suspect that the two Smith men who married Elizabeth and Hannah may themselves have been of German background -- perhaps they were born Schmidts or something like that. William and Elizabeth later converted to United Brethren before or shortly after they migrated to Carroll County, Illinois. As far as I can tell, George and Hannah remained with the Dunkers -- they lived in Guilford Township and are reportedly buried at Marion. Because the German Baptists believe in adult baptism, there's not likely any early records of infant christenings, like you can find with Lutherans.
