I asked a relative in Mercersburg to find the Burns Cemetery , here is what she wrote ; Kathy, I found 2 Burns cemeterys, and they are both in Waynesboro, possibly 15 miles east of Mercersburg. One I think the one you refered to is a large, 13 acres, along Rt 16,I contains Jeremiah Morrow,James,Jean Downey and Richard F Burns. the other is call Burns farm family cem. is currently located in the Renfrew Museum grounds, and holds J.Culbertson(Brother),Sarah D/O Sarah and Jeremiah,Jeremiah and Sarah, Jane,d/o James and Rosannah Downey Burns,Francis,Margaret,Esther, and John Burns, also John Knox White. There is an article in todays Public opinion,at www.publicopiniononline.com about an old graveyard found in Montgomery Twp.(the Mercersburg area). _______________________________________________________ Does anyone know of this new found graveyard ? My Ancestors rented land in Montgomery Twp in 1820 , I have always suspected that it attached to the land bought in 1811 and the Mercersburg Farm ? I was told at one time Mercersburg was Montgomery Twp ? But I thought the original Twps were Antrim and Guliford ? Kathy --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Get on board. Kathy: On my recent trip to Mercersburg I talked to two people who were knowledgeable about local cemeteries, one was the caretaker for Fairlawn Cemetery and the other was the local funeral director, both told me of two other cemeteries one was the old Seceder graveyard and the other also old was the Slate Hill cemetery. I have not heard of any others, except possible private burials on the farms. Dear Kathy: There are only about 158 Cemeteries in the Franklin County area ! My record (If that is the correct word to use) Going to Friends and Family members funerals is 56 in one year ! that is an average of one funeral a week . Always go directly to the Cemetery office and they can check thier books or computer and give You information , Don't go to some lawn and shrub care person (caretaker) , Before You go to a Funeral Director call and make an appointment , The last thing You or Anyone should do is just show up You could end up disturbing a Funeral ! After time they wikll get to know You like , Jim at G.B.F.H. and Paul at L.F.H. know Me it's good when You are on a first name basis with People ! >From: "gordon crooks" <[email protected]> >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: <[email protected]> >Subject: Re: [PAFRANKL] Burns Cemetery >Date: Thu, 21 Sep 2006 07:46:07 -0400 > >Kathy: On my recent trip to Mercersburg I talked to two people who were >knowledgeable about local cemeteries, one was the caretaker for Fairlawn >Cemetery and the other was the local funeral director, both told me of two >other cemeteries one was the old Seceder graveyard and the other also old >was the Slate Hill cemetery.
