    3. Now I'm confused. Are you saying there is a bootleg CD? Or was there a CD for sale? What's going on here? I'd like a LEGITIMATE copy (paying a reasonable price) as the odds of me making it up to Franklin county are slim, none, nil, etc. :( That is, if one is available. A question, if it isn't published, why not? You'd have a larger audience who could use it. If a record is just in a library or two, that's no good for anyone but those who live locally or who can afford to go there and access it (or hire someone, and I don't know about you guys, but I much prefer doing my own work, that way I know precisely what was done, etc.) Spoken from one who has 4 published genealogy record books (other end of Pennsylvania) and also knows the frustrations when needed records are confined to one or two local libraries. I put it on 3 computers, The Alexander Hamilton Memorial Free Library,Waynesboro; Coyle Library, Chambersburg and The Waynesboro Historical Society, Waynesboro. I did not know that by doing that, it made it public domain. I copied it from notebooks that are in The Alexander Hamilton Memorial Free Library, put there by Dean Calimer who over the past 35 years has put together these listings, along with Sam & Hilda Meisner, and about half a dozen others who tramped through all these cemeteries and copied tombstones, and looked through obituaries for hours and hours. Also funeral home listings are in there. So I hope you all enjoy it, as much as I do. Joe Barnhart

    3. About Copy Right Laws, if you copy from the public record for a book and then copy right the book, the “book” it self is copy righted but not the line item information taken from public record this not copy righted. It comes down to “ownership” of the information. Do you own the information? In this case no. The line item information is public domain but the book as a whole is copy righted. So you can copy from a book that is copy righted as long as the when the information is from a public domain like birth, death and cemeteries information but you can not copy the hold copy righted book. The term “publish” is when you put a book on to the market. It does not mean copy righted. Most books that are published are copy righted. If the information in the book or CD is from the public domain the information is not owned by the author and is available to be copied.
