At least you can find an approximate date. 2.Ther early newspapers have been extracted and are indexed in card files at the Franklin County Historical Society. The obits seldom tell much other than the date of death, 3. If there was no will, there would still have been an estate settlement if he owned any property. Lots of clues to the date of death can be found in the land records when the heirs divided the property. In 1776 there is a William Stitt in Capt Abraham Smith's Regt, Cumberland Co, militia. According to the 1886 History of Franklin Co (pg 181) this Abraham Smith was from Lurgan Twp. Also - 1786 tax list, Antrim Twp - Widow Stitt. This is probably Dorothy English, widow of William Stitt whose will was proven 1778 in Cumberland Co (Franklin not formed until 1784) For more on this William see American Revolutionary Soldiers of Franklin County which also has info on James, John, William (JR) , and Thomas Stitt.
