Surnames: GRIPE, GROVE, EPHREMANT In the 1860 Census for Franklin Co. (see Valley of the Shadow Project), there is listed in Letterkenney Twn., Pleasant Hall P.O.: Joseph GRIPE 54 m w "Clergy Old Bapti" $5000 $300 Mary GRIPE 53 f w Rebecca GROVE 24 f w "Domestic" , and next door is living the family of Andrew GRIPE 28 m w "Farmer" $0 $1500 . I have reason to believe Rebecca GROVE is my great-grandmother, born 31 Jan 1839 in Stony Creek Twn, Somerset Co. (This would make her "21" rather than "24" years old, making either the census-taker or the transcriber wrong. I have looked at the original image on microfilm, and think a case can be made that "21" is written with a pencil mark over the "1" to make it "4". I have written to Valley/Shadow about this, but no reply yet.) (1) Is anything known about the GRIPE family, especially 1850-1870? What church did he minister to? Does it still exist? What is "Old Bapti" - Anabaptist, Mennonite, Old Order Brethren ? How strict were they? Where would records of marriages by JG (abt 1865) be kept? Does anyone know the Gripes' death dates? Why does the name appear so rarely in PA before/after 1860? I presume this family would be considered wealthy, even by Franklin Co. standards? (2) I am especially interested in any collateral information about Rebecca GROVE, as I have identified her in 1850 in Somerset Co., then in Benton Co., MN in 1870. How long did she serve as Domestic to the GRIPEs? Is she related to any other GROVES in Franklin Co? (3) I would appreciate suggestions on collateral historical reading on Letterkenny, UpperStrasburg, Pleasant Hall before, during , and after the Civil War (1855-1867). (4) I welcome any information whatsoever on a family EPHREMANT, EPHERMAN, or ENFREYMONT that may have figured in JG's chruch or personal life. (There is an EPHERMAN family living in Harrisburg in 1860, with no occupation, and who are absent from before/after searches in PA). (5) Are there other transcriptions of the 1860 Census for Letterkenny Twn.? Would anyone be good enough to examine p. 106 of the oiginal image and tell me if they agree with my reading of "21" for Rebecca's age? I apologize for the length of this communication, but I am new to Franklin Co. and to this list. Thanks, Bill Jewell Berkeley, CA
