    1. [PAFRANKL] Re: PAFRANKL-D Digest V99 #169
    2. Hello David! I tried to do a quick lookup for you in my Civil War resource books, but, of course, ol' Benjamin Smith tuned into 50 Benjamin Smiths from PA. (I have Smith in one of my lines & I hate it!) I am sending you below the first 20 Benjamin Smiths information. Someone on the list may recognize a Franklin Co Civil War company in the 20 company names shown, all from PA. I will try to send you the remaining 30 Benjamin Smiths & their companies, but it really takes time that I don't have right now. I am leaving the country this Sat. for a month - if I don't get back with you before I go & if you still don't find the right Benjamin Smith, remind me in a month & I will look up the remaining 30 Benjamin Smiths from PA. Do any of these 20 Benjamin Smiths sound like yours? Any idea which unit her served with? If you know where he's buried, many times the name of his company is written on the tombstone. Also look in the county history books, many of the soldiers & their companies were named in the county histories. When you find his company name, you can send to the National Archives for his pension & military records - although they are charging an arm & a leg right now - I think $20.00 a piece ($40.00 for both pension & military records) It used to be $4.00 each - I think it's outrageous to charge $20.00 each! Anyone out there that could give a quick lookup in Bates' Regimental History of PA Civil War Soldiers book? My Pennsylvania relative was "Benjamin SMITH". I realize the name Smith is a popular one. He lived in Franklin County for some time. If there are too many "Benjamin Smith" entries for that name, just yell at me nicely. Sorry to bug you. Any info you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! David Stoner Seminole, FL >>
