Below is some information I recently came across in several Bibles of the Kinsey family of Franklin County. Included are a number of newspaper clips, but unfortunately the months and years were not recorded in most cases. Nevertheless this information may be of value to some Franklin County researcher. Holman and Company, No. 1222 Arch Street, Philadelphia. In the section between the Old and New Testaments was the following hand-written information: Holy Matrimony (a form that had been filled in) This is to Certify That Daniel Kinsey and Elmira Amanda Karper were united by me, in Holy Matrimony At Mr John Karpers on the 22nd day of January in the year of our Lord 1885. I am no better, nor any worse. Mrs. K and I will go to the West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh on next Wednesday. A few days after our arrival an operation will be performed on my limb by Dr. McCann – perhaps involving amputation. It seems the only way to health for me. The road is rough but I am satisfied, if it brings relief. Mrs. K is reconciled because she is anxious for my recovery. We think of you all often and remember your kindness with gratitude. Each new heading "Deaths" indicates a new issue. - advertisements on the back of one page were for Dr. H.N. Eberly, dentist of South Main Street, Mercersburg, PA, and Dr. John L. Blair, physician and surgeon, West Seminary Street, 3 doors West of Diamond, Mercersburg, PA. - possibly the clippings are from "The Mercersburg Journal", which was established in 1846 and in 1887 was "a weekly, neutral in politics and has a good local circulation", according to the "History of Franklin County Pennsylvania, Illustrated 1887" by Warner, Beers, and Company. WISE. – Near this place, on the 15th inst., Miss Margaret Wise, aged 58 years. Deaths. BREWER – Near this place, on the 4th inst., Mrs. Elmira A. Brewer, aged 33 years, 3 months and 10 days. BROWN – In this place, on the 2nd inst., Isaac Alfred Brown, aged 1 year, 5 months, and 9 days. Deaths. TEETER. – Near this place, on the 7th inst., Mrs. Mary Teeter, in the 84th year of her age. Deaths. WORK. – Near this place, on the 1st inst., Mr. John Huston Work, in the 38th year of his age. [See longer article below.] Other newspaper clippings in envelop labeled "Elmira Karper": The Tomb. HOKE. – On the 9th inst., in Montgomery Township, W.H. Harrison Hoke, aged 30 years, 3 months and 9 days. Deceased. – Mr. Jacob Baker, died at his residence near Shimpstown on Thursday morning last. About two years since Mr. B. was attacked with erysiplis, necessitating the amputation of a leg; from the effects of which he never fully recovered, and which terminated his life as above stated. – His age was 64 years, 8 months and 9 days. Suicide. – On Wednesday morning last the lifeless body of Charles Miller was found hanging in the horse stable on the premises of Mr. Jacob Hawbaker, in the "Corner," some four or five miles Southwest of this place. The deceased was for some years subject to fits which attacked him quite frequently – and it is the presumption that they had such an effect upon his mind as to produce insanity, in which condition he proceeded to put a termination to his life. He was in this place on the afternoon previous, remaining until some time after dark, when he proceeded to the above named place, and ascending a permanent ladder which had been built for the purpose of getting on the mow, he took a stout rope which he had provided for the occasion, and fastened it securely to the timbers above; then descending the ladder to within a few feet of the ground he looped the other end around his neck and stepped off the ladder. When found his feet was [sic] some two feet from the ground. He was discovered on Wednesday morning by a young son of Mr. Hawbaker's [sic] who quickly gave the alarm. F.C. Waidlich, Esq., of this place, was notified, who acting in the capacity of a Coroner, summoned a jury, and proceeding to the place, held an inquest on the remains of the unfortunate man, who rendered a verdict in accordance with the above facts. He was about 33 years of age, and was unmarried. Deceased. – John Huston Work died at his residence, a few miles Southwest of this place, on the 1st instant. The deceased was a member of Company C, 126th Regt. Pa. Vols., which was recruited at this place in 1862, and was wounded in the shoulder, in December of that year, in the engagement at Fredericksburg, Va., in which the command participated. A short time previous to his death the wound commenced to give him fresh trouble, and eventually it resulted in his death as above stated. He was well known and highly esteemed, and his untimely demise is one of deep regret. He was interred in Fairview Cemetery, at this place, on Monday afternoon of last week, and notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather on that day was followed thence by a large concourse of relative and friends, among which was an escort of about forty of his late comrades in arms. He was in the 38th year of his age. Requiescat in pace. [Because Fairview Cemetery is in Mercersburg, "at this place" refers to Mercersburg in this article and probably in most of the other ones from the Karper envelope.] Died. – On Sunday afternoon, April 20th, in Lebanon, Pa., Thomas Frantz, only son of Thomas S. and Lydia Walmer, aged 3 years, 6 months and 8 days. Our darling boy, – so bless'd to us, So beauteous in our sight; To holy realms transplanted is – In cherub vestments bright. We miss thee in our earthly home, Departed household joy, Our eyes bewail where'er we go, With tears our lovely boy. We list upon the stairs to hear, The patter of thy feet; Yet know and feel that never here, That lov'd lost one we'll meet.
