Hello Fellow Listers: Please find below a message/request that was forwarded to me via the PACAMBRI-List. I have never heard of this building but maybe someone on one of the lists has and can help...... Donna HELLER ZINN of Newville, Cumberland Co., PA. ****************************************** From: Dr Paul Collins [mailto:CollinPH@hhs.bham.ac.uk] Sent: Wednesday, January 24, 2001 5:30 AM To: nate@pa-roots.com Subject: Wollaston Hall Hello There I wonder if you can help me. I am Chairman of a local history group in Wollaston, Stourbridge, West Midlands UK. We are trying to trace the whereabouts of our former manor house - Wollaston Hall - which was dismantled and sent to America, we believe to Eastern Pennsylvania, around 1927. Wollaston Hall stood overlooking the works of John Bradley & Co where the 'Stourbridge Lion' locomotive was made in 1828. So far we have been able to substantiate that the hall - a timber Tudor building - was bought by an American, dismantled, and exported to Eastern Pennsylvania, we believe, sometime in 1927 or possibly in 1928. The Hall bears the date 1617, carved into one of the main timbers over its front door. Would it be possible to have a message about our search posted somewhere so that it could reach as many people as possible? It would also be helpful if we could have addresses/contacts/e-mail addresses for History groups or societies, especially ones in the Eastern part of Pennsylvania, to whom I could forward this enquiry directly. I can supply photographs of the Hall by e-mail. I would be grateful for any help/advice you could give me. We find it impossible to believe that, if there is any truth to this story, there is not someone somewhere who may know something about this building. One of the many stories concerning it is that is was the first such export of a building from the UK to the USA. Could you also cc any e-mail to my home on:- paul.collins@yesit.co.uk Thank you in advance. I have written to Dr. Collins and referred him to A&E on the "America's Castles" series. It is likely that Wollaston Hall has been incorporated into one of the mansions built by our Guilded Age Millionaires. Perhaps those of you who live near such a structure can check with the historian or caretaker to see if Wollaton Hall was used in it's construction. I also advised Dr. Collins to look beyond PA since it may have only been purchased there and assembled elsewhere. Even here in southwestern Ohio there are homes with imported elements. Wayne Seibert
