    1. [PAFRANKL] Rocky Spring Presbyterian Church
    2. Carolyn K Shearer
    3. The annual service at Rocky Spring Presbyterian Church in Letterkenny Twp (but not on the Letterkenny Army Depot) will be held Sunday June 14th at 3 p.m. All are welcome. The church still is as it was built in 1786 - box pews with the owner's names, brick floors, no lights or heat. The Franklin County chapter of the DAR took over the maintainence of the building this past year and is starting the process of necessary repairs.

    3. Hi Gladys and Fellow Listers: Once a year (in years passed), Letterkenny Army Depot would take "tours" to the various cemeteries and graveyards on the Depot grounds. I'm thinking it was usually Memorial Day weekend, but I'm not sure of that. I'm also not sure if they still do this or not. For cemetery records and tombstone inscriptions - you'd probably do well to visit the Kittochtinny Historical Society (Franklin County Historical Society) in Chambersburg. Their website is: http://www.rootsweb.com/~pakhs/ Happy Hunting! 1. [PAFRANKL] ELDER in Ballymoney, Co Antrim, Northern Ireland
    2. Nancy Elder Petersen
    3. Hi Gordon, Thanks again for help with access to the book: "A Short History of the Presbyterian Churches in Ballymoney" by Rev. A.H. Dill and others, 1898. Now I see Full text is also listed on "Internet Archives" at http://www.archive.org/stream/cu31924008573887/cu31924008573887_djvu.txt Interesting to me that the book was digitized from Olin Library, Cornell University, where I worked as Library Assistant from 1964-67. (I should have been researching my genealogy there!) Page 11-12 mentions "THOMAS ELDER" Chapter 1. Early Settlers of the Route. 10. ..."an old manuscript book has been preserved and has come into the possession of the Session of the congregation. This book, brown and worn with age, many of its leaves torn and defaced, and parts of it missing altogether, is all that remains of the records of the congregation of Ballymoney from its beginning till the year 1817. .." 11. ..."Amongst the earliest names occurring in this old record are the following : John Boyd, Robert McElhose, Benjamin Boyle, Robert Biggart, John Hopkin, Hugh McMaster, John Hamil, Thomas Elder, John Lusk, John Ramsay, Alex. Dunlop, and Alex. Calderwood ; all of whom were elders of the church, and took part in the meetings of Session. Several of these are of special interest because they are the direct ancestors of families still in connection with the Presbyterian Churches of Ballymoney...." 12. "The Hamils, Elders and Lusks, the Ramsays and McMasters have branched out in many directions, and have given many prominent and useful members to the Presbyterian Church...." Nancy's notes: Of course, I still have to prove which ELDER DNA line this is for Thomas ELDER. He may belong to the "PAXTANG PA" I-haplogroup-Viking ELDER DNA group, instead of my "FRANKLIN CO PA" R1b ELDER DNA group. see DNA Results charts: at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Elder Nancy Elder Petersen Volunteer Host, ELDER DNA project

    1. [PAFRANKL] Fw: West (surname)
    2. Gordon Crooks
    3. Barbara: I checked with my State library which has a very good collection of surname books and their histories below is what they found. Apparentlty nothing was found for West in the U.K. other than West itself. If I had to guess I would say that your original West if he came from Germany shortened it to West, or a census taker did it foir him !If you think that instead they were Ulsterscots then I can give you some heavy reading to look for the name both as 1900's name and as a 1600's name. 1. [PAFRANKL] West surname
    2. Barbara West
    3. I could use some advice from some other researchers. I've been researching the West family surname for many years and have failed to move any farther than my great-grandfather Thomas West b. ca 1815 d. ca. 1865 and his wife Dorothy Rock (1817-1886). They last lived in Guilford Township, Franklin county. According to the 1850 and 1860 census, both were born in Pennsylvania. Dorothy appears in 1870, but Thomas is nowhere to be found. I can locate no birth, marriage, death or burial records for either and have visited the courthouse, historical society and libraries. I'm revisiting a piece of information passed down verbally through a cousin's line that said that the West surname had been shortened. The same source said that the immigrant had either been born in Scotland and immigrated to Germany or born in Germany and then immigrated to Scotland before settling in the U.S. Gordon, I'm hoping you may be able to shed some light on this puzzle? Any leads, however small would sure be appreciated. -Barb

    3. Just FYI, in case other folks have the same problem that I did. I wasn't able to connect properly using Gordon's link. It displayed a blank page with a menu bar on the side but the links don't work. However, there is a message at the bottom of that page saying "Whoops - page doesn't exit" and it directs you to click on a link to the "home page". So I did and that worked. Once you get to the home page, click on "History" on the menu bar that's across the top of the page. On the next page, click on "Lisburn Historical Society" on the menu bar down the left side. On the next page, you will see another menu bar down the left side. Near the bottom of that menu bar is the link to the "Huguenots of Lisburn". That's it. There is a great deal of historical info on this site, including some about the development of the linen industry there. Very interesting! I read every page. Thanks, Gordon. You always give us such great resources. Here's the "home page" link that will get you started if Gordon's link doesn't work for you either. http://www.lisburn.com/index.html Tink At 06:18 AM 5/17/09, Gordon Crooks wrote: >This URL will take you a web site which contains a great deal of >information on the Huguenots, many who settled in Franklin Co. and >who were also Ulsterscots.
