    1. Re: [PAFRANKL] Presbyterian Church records
    2. All-- I think that you can bank on things that Gordon tells you. I always look at his postings even if the title does't seem to apply to me! For clarification, I would ask if the naming pattern means that a man would name his first born after his father, ie, the boy's grandfather. That seems to be the case in my lines. I hope this answers a few questions about American Presbyterian records. The following is part of the church and maintains the old records of many congregations. The Presbyterian Historical Society 425 Lombard Street Philadelphia, PA 19147 215-627-1852 www.history.pcusa.org They do not do research for you but they will give you a list of researchers in Philadelphia. You can search the website shown above to determine what church records they have. If you find records that interest you, you have the alternatives of hiring a researcher, visiting Philadelphia yourself, or paying $20 to get an interlibrary loan of microfilm through your local library. They have session minutes from 1790 for the PA congregation that interests me. I have not done any of the above yet! Maybe tomorrow. . . . ! --Jack

Rebecca also found land warrants in my books which are listed below. You will note that she found Stitt's in other paces in N. Ireland, however if the Scottish naming tradition first son is named after his father, so this could be a father and son listing. Off hand I can't think of anyway of pining it down as the 1766 Census exists only in fragments as the originals were burned in the 1921 Four Courts Fires in Dublin. 3. There are a few Presbyterian marriage records that early, but no birth or death records. Other places to check in Franklin 1. Orphan Court records SOMETIMES list the date of death. At least you can find an approximate date. 2.Ther early newspapers have been extracted and are indexed in card files at the Franklin County Historical Society. The obits seldom tell much other than the date of death, 3. If there was no will, there would still have been an estate settlement if he owned any property. Lots of clues to the date of death can be found in the land records when the heirs divided the property. In 1776 there is a William Stitt in Capt Abraham Smith's Regt, Cumberland Co, militia. According to the 1886 History of Franklin Co (pg 181) this Abraham Smith was from Lurgan Twp. Also - 1786 tax list, Antrim Twp - Widow Stitt. This is probably Dorothy English, widow of William Stitt whose will was proven 1778 in Cumberland Co (Franklin not formed until 1784) For more on this William see American Revolutionary Soldiers of Franklin County which also has info on James, John, William (JR) , and Thomas Stitt. There are abstracts of this book on PA Roots http://www.pa-roots.org/
