Hi Folks: My people came from Ahoghill Glagorm estate in Antrim, N. Ireland and among the other families who also came to Franklin County from the same area are Moorehead, Beatty, McClure, McCrea, Ambrose, Dunwoodie to name a few.The URL's listed below will take you to the history, myths and witchcraft which prevailed there in the 1600's. It is a good example of the differences between the ruling Catholics and the folk who were mainly Presbyterians. http://www.glagormcastle.com/index.php?id=doctorcolville http://www.glagormcastle.com/index.php?id=ghostofdoctorcolv. The Perry Historians will be hosting another of its Special Presentations - this time on Civil War Era Firearms. Did you know that disease was the leading cause of death in the Civil War? Did you know that the second leading cause of death was the famed .58 caliber "minie" ball? What were some of the nicknames soldiers gave to the imported weapons, and what was the favorite firearm of the foot soldier? These questions and more will be answered in Steve Jury's presentation entitled "Firearms of the Civil War." So come to The Perry Historians / Harry Lenig Library near New Bloomfield, Perry Co., PA. on Sunday, May 23, 2010 at 2:00 p.m., and hear Steve discuss the never ending problem of how to supply firearms for millions of soldiers, and how technology improved in firearms during the four years of the war. >From smooth bore to rifled muskets, to breech loading rim fires, Steve has it all. Many of the firearms Steve talks about will be on display for guests to view along with a demonstration on loading procedures for muzzleloaders, and a question and answer period. If the Civil War or firearms in general are of interest to you, we think you will enjoy this presentation. Light refreshments will be served following the presentation. This is FREE to all and all are welcome to attend! Hi Tink, Yes we have everything pretty well documented from 1850 on. It's the time period from 1827 to 1850 we're lost on. Yes that is our family tree that you saw. We have been to Cassville and seen the grave stone with those dates and seen the census from 1850 forward. Unfortunately, as I'm sure you know, 1850 is the first year that lists everyone in the household so it has not been possible to track in which household he resided before that time. As far as your question as to why we posted in Franklin County, the "Historical & Biographical Annals of Columbia & Montour Counties" says " Elisha B Hyssong was a native of Franklin County Pa and was there bound out in boyhood to learn the potter's trade serving four as an apprentice Later he went to Cassville Huntingdon Co Pa where he first worked as a journeyman and there he married Rachel E Green a native of Huntingdon County. When he built a pottery of his own he had to clear the location and that plant was carried on by the Hyssong family for sixty five years Elisha B Hyssong continuing to operate it until his death in 1873 after which his son Bruce took it running the business until the spring of 1912." Of course they did not get his date of death right so it's possible the other may be misinformation as well, but it's all we've got. Folks I am happy to say and they should be given credit for it. There is a local committee who has undertaken preservation of Kennedy Memorial Church & cemetery in Welshes Run.. I visited this cemetery about 5 years or so ago and it was in deplorable shape. Today all the trees, vines, bushes etc are gone and there is only well maintained grass. Stones have been repaired are re-set. The only regret that I have is that "gook" used to repair stones, any lettering that was left is wiped out by that stuff They should be given a pat on the back for a job well done ! Gordon Crooks
After two years of looking I finally found the old Indian Burial Grounds and the slave cemetery. They were not where I was told they were and they are on Welshes Run Rd, not Montgomery Church Road.. There is not much to see except the un-natural mounds and the telltale groundhog holes in them. Gordon Crooks
Wow, Gordon! You hit another home run with all this information on the more northerly Maryland hundreds. Since my ancestor is nowhere to be found in PA ship's lists, the tradition that he came to PA via Baltimore (or, of all things, New Orleans) may be true. This is very helpful, as usual. Anita Camplese >
Today anyone seeing a strange man walking in the fog and rain in cemeteries, don't be too alarmed, its me ! I will be in Greencastle to deliver some papers to the Museum and then I am going to try again to find that old Indian & Slave burial ground. Gordon Crooks
