    1. [PAFRANKL] Frederick Lesher
    2. Beth Ann Deardorff
    3. I have a question... does anyone happen to know of the death date for Frederick Lesher. He was the son of Augustus Levi Lesher and Catherine Spickler and was born on July 22, 1804 according to The History & Genealogy of the Burgner Family. Frederick married Catherine (Kate) Benedict, daughter of David and Nancy Benedict. I recently found their headstone at Green Hill (almost completely covered over with grass and dirt) and there were dates for Catherine but not for Frederick. Very strange. They were near a plot where their daughter, Emma Lesher Gladhill was buried. There was a date on Ancestry.com of Feb 14, 1915, but the person who used this date had a disclaimer that he hadn't verified anything on the page. I can't find Frederick on the 1910 census. He had been living with Emma & Harvey Gladhill up to 1900... then Emma and family move to Chambersburg, but Frederick isn't with them. So, does any one have a clue as to when Frederick died? Thanks. Beth Ann

    3. Not quite so, Lou. I was at the courthouse on Monday, and contrary to what I had been told, the old estate records are still there. The Register of Wills office has the index books for all to see, and microfiche of estate records. Several clerks took time to help me with a stubborn film reader and get my copies, even though they were busy and the phone was ringing off the hook. One even went to the basement to get an original for me because the reader wasn't working well. If you do your own searching and have patience, you can be successful. The Franklin County Historical Society(closed Mondays ) does have lots of good stuff; family files, cemetery records, deed and estate records on microfilm, a card file of information extracted from newspapers, maps etc. -------------------------------------------------- From: "Lou Risley" <louriz@kc.rr.com> Sent: Thursday, June 17, 2010 10:40 AM To: <PAFRANKL@rootsweb.com> Subject: Re: [PAFRANKL] Courthouse Visit > Your best source in Chambersburg is the KITTOCHTINNY HISTORICAL SOCIETY. > They do have a website. > Forget the Courthouse for genealogy research. 2. Do not forget the courthouse. Their indexes for wills, administration, deeds etc are there. One old deed told me what other county my ancestor came from. You aren't going to obtain a copy of a will at the Historical society. Also, I forget what the office is called on the 2nd floor (Clerk of something) they have one register of old death records. It was from this book I had a major breakthrough myself. If you ask they will let you go on back to look. Plus it's less than a five minute walk from the Historical Society. Also, the library is a half block down from the Society and they have some old newspapers on film the Historical society does not. The "genealogy lady" in the library, if she's there is very helpful. The Historical Society has old jail cells filled with old newspapers just rotting away. It's rather unfortunate. That said, use every single resource available while you are there. ---- BonnieM <blmalmat@bellsouth.net> wrote: > > Really? 3. I am planning to visit the Franklin County courthouse soon. Can anyone tell me if the deed books, will books, and marriage bonds are available for the 1700s? What is their policy on copying? Can cameras or hand copiers be used? I looked on the county website but didn't find anything helpful. Does the local library or historical society have local genealogy information available on daily basis or our their hours limited? I will appreciate any help. Larry

    2. Hi, Barb- Note that the admin address SHOULD be PAFRANKL-admin@rootsweb.com and that there is no period at the end of the address. That is why the message bounced -- and shows as being "malformed" because a period on the end is not part of a proper email address. Try sending the message to the admin address with no period on the end and it should go through. Joan In a message dated 6/14/2010 9:55:34 P.M. 2. BonnieM
    3. Hi all, I'm in the last few weeks before my anticipated trip and I have a few questions to help me plan. Any assistance gratefully received. Libraries: What is the best library for genealogy in the Mercersburg or Chambersburg area? I'll be based in Mercersburg and plan on going to Fendrick, so I know about that library. Court Records: Where are the Court of Quarter Sessions records held? Are they the courthouse in Chambersburg or in the Magisterial Court in Mercersburg? I'm looking for the original docket books. Due to records being old, I know the civil court records might well be offsite, but would like to at least see the court docket books. Thanks! Can't wait to see the area. Bonz

    1. [PAFRANKL] Franklin County Moorhead family origin in Northern Ireland
    2. Paul
    3. I have used some information that Gordon Crooks has placed online on his web pages to develop a plausible theory (but only a theory, not fact) as to where in Northern Ireland the families of Samuel (Hamilton Twp) and John Moorhead (Washington Twp) immigrated from. Note that this may not apply to the family of contemporary Michael Moorhead, as I absolutely cannot place him with the others. Instead of putting this longer article on line, I invite anyone seriously interested in the Moorhead family origins, or anyone with other theories or facts in this regard, to contact me through PAFRANKL-L. If you give me your email address, I will forward you a copy of my findings, and we can discuss. This also applies to the Beatty family of Antrim Twp, Franklin County, as I feel there is a direct connection between the two families. Possibly also the Johnston family of Antrim Twp, as I note there is a Johnston/Beatty cemetery near where the Beatty's lived. Sorry, but I will only entertain serious requests for information, as I cannot cope with a deluge that may be off-subject. Please tell me why you are interested in these possible connections. I may be delayed somewhat in answering queries as I will be traveling for a few weeks. Again, the MOORHEAD, BEATTY, JOHNSTON families who lived in the vicinity of present-day Waynesboro, Washington Twp, Franklin Co, or just west in Antrim Twp., in the 1750 to 1800 period. Also applies to the Moorhead family in Hamilton Twp.

    3. Gordon --- I just found that if you change the spelling of glagorm to galgorm, you do find the link you wanted. Just switch the "l" and the "a" in the links ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gordon Crooks@verizon.net" <gordoncrooks@verizon.net> To: <PAFRANKL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, June 07, 2010 8:18 AM Subject: [PAFRANKL] Antrim Co., N. 3. Interesting. The Beatty family in SE Franklin County, and the Moorhead family of the same general area, are shown to be best of friends in the late 1700s (per wills, executors, etc). Also, Moorheads lived quite close to Dunwoodie when they relocated to Montgomery Twp. in Franklin Twp. McClures also in the Montgomery area. I believe the Crooks also lived close to Moorheads and Beattys in Washington Twp and nearby Antrim Twp. However, I cannot get anything from the links you provided, Gordon. My computer says no such addresses.
