There were two John Bosserts (Buzzard, Bosert, Boshard, et al) in Dauphin County before 1790, both with wives named Catherine. 1. The older one (my line) was born about 1740, married Cathrine LaRue, (born 1740 Tulpehocken, daughter of Jonas LaRue and Catherine Barbara Zeller) about 1763. This John died 1803 Hamilton Twp, Franklin County. Children in the will: Jacob, Henry, Catherine wife of Henry Trout, Margaret wife of John Bonnett, Mary wife of Dewald Kieffer, Esther, Elizabeth wife of Jacob Shearer, Rebecca, John and Magdalena. Catherine was born 1765 Middletown (now Dauphin) and Margaret 1767 same place. John was born 1773 Emanuel Lutheran Elizabeth Twp, Lancaster County. The younger children were born in Franklin. Family records show that Catherine married Henry Trout 8 Jun 1782 and that John Jr, born 1773, married Margaret Kinneard/Kincade. In 1796 John Bossert of Franklin County and wife Catherine daughter of Jonas LaRue sold land in Dauphin. (Deed Bk K-1, p94.) 2. From Dauphin County church records: "Catharina Elisabeth of Hannes Bosert and Catharina, b. Nov 20, 1775, bpt. Jul 2, 1776. Spon: Wilhelm Reuter and wife. Dauphin County, Lykens Valley, Lower Church, Upper Paxtang Twp. From the same records: Catherine Elisabeth Huber, daughter of Johannes and Catherine Magdalena Bosshart, born 26 Nov 1776 Upper Paxtang, Lutheran, married 1800 Jacob Huber, died 6 Feb 1827, buried HoffmanÂ’s. This record combined with the will of John Bossert 1803 Franklin proves that there were two John Bosserts with wives named Catherine (and daughters named Catherine). Who is the second John Bossert and is he related to the John who died 1803 Franklin?

Hi, In response to the comments/questions regarding the Warner-Beers publication, "History of Franklin County Pennsylvania, Illustrated, 1887" I'm sorry to say the entire book is not yet on-line. I was in the process of typing it and inputing it, but broke my finger, and haven't gotten back to it, as yet. I'll try and make an concerted effort to continue. I've input about 300 pages, but there are 887 pages in the book. Also, the correct address is: http://www.rootsweb.com/!usgenweb/pa/franklin/wbeerstoc.htm Thanks. Joyce Moore
The full info for this book is "Biographical Annals of Franklin County Pennsylvania" published by Gen. Pub. of Chicago in 1905. 706 pp, No author given. The intro credits Mr. George O. Seilhammer with much of the information. It appears to have been a 'mug book' done in the style of the time with persons paying to submit information about their families, just as recent county histories were done during the bicentennial. Some of the information is very good with lots of dates and places while other families seem to have submitted the 'three brothers' stories. Other information is just plain incorrect, e.g. my husband's Skinners (p235, family of William Wilson Skinner and Mary Ann Ramsey). The dates and the list of children do not match either our family Bible or the census records. Another researcher tells me that this book was reprinted by Genealogical Publishing (now of Baltimore) about 1986. The new edition has an index. This company has its own website. Here is the specific address for PA books: (I have no connection to this company, but do use their resources.) http://www.genealogybookshop.com/genealogybookshop/files/The_United_States,P ennsylvania/index.html I checked under "Franklin County" but did not find the reprint edition, it may be out of print by now, or another company may have done the reprint. -----Original Message----- From: dmdmd <mldunn@bellsouth.net> To: PAFRANKL-L@rootsweb.com <PAFRANKL-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Sunday, September 05, 1999 10:52 PM Subject: [PAFRANKL] Bio Annals of Franklin co. >Hi, > I must have missed the first post regarding the Annals of Franklin >co...does anyone know who the author is and whether this is still in >print? Hi all. I'm new to the list, and I've sort of been reading and trying to think how I could be helpful. Two recent queries, one on Parnell's Knob to Burnt Creek, and the other mentioning the Biographical Annals of Franklin County, set me wondering if people forget how easy it is to access the catalog of the Library of Congress (//catalog.loc.gov/)? And what a goldmine of information can be found there? For example, I searched for the title of Parnell's Knob to Burnt Creek, couldn't find it, so searched under the subject Franklin County (Pa.) History and came up with it almost immediately. It is Harry E. Foreman, Forbes Road: Parnell's Knob to Burnt Cabins. Chambersburg, PA: H.E. Foreman, 1954. 94 pp.: ill. maps 23 cm. The Chambersburg library might well have a copy, or possibly the Kittochtinny Historical Society. The Biographical annals were apparently first publshed in 1905, then reissued in 1978. The library has recently revised the catalog search format and for some reason no longer gives the ISBN number, just its own internal numbering system, but knowing this much should be enough that your local library might be able to get it for you on interlibrary loan, though often the libraries holding the few copies of such books don't let them circultate. But sometimes those libraries will do simple look-ups and Xerox pages. I also found a listing of seven old newspapers under the subject heading Franklin County (Pa.) History (Newspaper). The library also has a site that apparently will let you search the catalogs of other libraries, though I'm not sure of that as I haven't tried it yet. Hope this is helpful. Judy Hall
Does anyone out there have a copy of Parnell's Knob to Burnt Cabins? I am interested in whatever Jones genealogy there is there. I have one page from the book which is about John Jones, the "progenitor" of this family. In he last paragraph, it says "John Jones, Jr. was born in 1874, Samuel in 1791. Consult Jones genealogy for some interesting information,,,,,". Can anyone help? Thanks Mike Jones
There is a listing in the 1810 Census Index for a John Hippert (Hepfer) living in Greene Township, Franklin Co. PA. Could someone tell me if he has any other persons living with him at that time? I am looking for the father of my great, great, great grandfather - Daniel Hepfer (1806) who resided in Franklin County. Also, what township is Chambersburg in? Was it originally in Greene Township? Thank you. Sue Cramer
Carolyn, Please pardon my intrusion, and I hope you don't object to a request for lookup in the source you mention. I would really appreciate a lookup for the surname THOMSON--Alexander#1, Alexander #2, Andrew, Archibald, James, John, or William. Could you also supply the author/s, year of publication, publisher's name, ISBN number if applicable; this would be a very big help in my research of my mother's family name, THOMSON, in Franklin Co., PA, ca. 1772; also Allegheny Co., PA, late 1700's. Thank you very much for your time and help. I am looking for the family of Samuel Dunmire b. ca. 1830. In pension papers for the C.W. he states he was born near Cumberland. Don't know whether that means county or valley. No parents names are listed, but last name spelling could vary (Dunmore/Dinsmore,etc.) as Samuel was illiterate. Does anyone have something that might fit this line and time frame? Hi Shirley: I am a direct descendant of David Miller (b.1797 d.21-Feb-1868 in Juniata Co., PA.) and Mary Jane Reigle [aka Riegel, etc.] (b.ca.1799 d.26-Jan-1877 in Peru Mills, Lack Twp., Juniata Co., PA.). I have never found where David and Mary Jane are buried and have had a hard time following their children as I do not have a complete list of names. They had a son, Peter Long Miller who was killed during the battle of Spottsylvania. They also had a daughter Catherine who married a Joseph Richardson [this is my direct line]. I was able to find a son, William on the 1870 Census. He was b.ca.1837 and a farmer with $900 in Real Estate and $340 in Personal Estate. He was married to an Ada K., also b.ca.1837 and had a son, James b.ca.1869. Also living with them at that time was William's mother, Mary (b.ca.1802) and an Isaac Miller (b.ca.1854)[this may be a son or a nephew?????]. All were residing in Lack Twp., Juniata Co. and received their mail at East Waterford. In 1885, a James L. Miller [believe this is the one listed above?] stated that he is 17 years of age and residing in McVeytown, PA. and that he is the grandson of Mary [Jane Reigle] Miller and that she is dead. He also stated that she was entitled to the Mother's Pension that she received before her death for her son, Peter Long Miller's service [and death] in the Civil War. I have never been able to tie my Millers into the ones from Millerstown. My Millers seem to have "come from" Franklin and maybe even Snyder [then Union] Counties. I did have a hard time following which David and Mary Miller my ancestors were as there was another couple by the same names and just about the same ages residing in Juniata Co. at the same time. The "other" David and Mary seemed to have resided and owned property towards the easterly end of Juniata Co. while mine were in the westerly townships. Any help would be ever so much appreciated. To make things even more "funny", I have a David R. Miller (b.1829, in Silver Springs Twp., Cumberland Co., PA.) who married a Frances "Fanney" Brownawell. This David's parents were to be Abraham and Elizabeth Shupe Miller from Silver Spring Twp. and Dauphin Co., PA. respectively. I also have several old photos of a few Millers who were from Duncannon [at least that is where the photographer was from] and do not know who they are. I presume they are related somehow to the Brownawells as that is where the photos were found - in a Brownawell family album. Hope to be hearing from you soon...... Hello Everyone! Does anyone know if Franklin County has a record of children born out of wedlock? I have heard that some PA counties have a record for children born out of wedlock. If they know the father, they sometimes made criminal charges against him and possibly the mother. I think they were called "The Bastardy and Fornication Files (or records)" If so where would I obtain a copy? Thanx! Amy
