    1. [PAFRANKL] Re: [PACUMBER-L] SEES, PRITZ, WATSON
    2. Kathy, In my line of THOMSON, I have two 3rd Gr aunts, Margaret THOMSON ( 1759 -- 1829) and Barbara THOMSON ( 1761 -- ?), who both married WATSONs. Margaret to Andrew WATSON ( 1755 -- 1823), and Barbara to William WATSON ( 1761 -- ?). Margaret, the 7th child, and Barbara, the 8th child, were daus. of Alexander THOMSON ( 1722 -- 1800) and Elizabeth EDMONSTONE (1728 --1815), both from county of Renfrew Scotland, emigrating to America 1771 >Cumberland/Franklin Co., PA 1772, Corkerhill/Scotland, PA. Alexander and Elizabeth are buried in the Rocky Springs Presbyterian Church/Cemetery, Letterkenny, PA. Margaret and Barbara were also born in Scotland, county of Renfrew, and emigrated with their parents. This information taken from a compilation/44 pp. typescript, titled <<"FAMILY AND DESCENDANTS OF ALEXANDER AND ELIZABETH THOMSON" by Andrew Watson Pentland, abt. 1902-1903>>. In this family history there is a mention of a James WATSON, child #2, of a Robert WATSON ( 1728?, Scotland) and a Margaret WATSON, but from what I can surmise this family lived in Scotland. Robert, b. 1728? and the father of the above named Andrew and William, one Andrew WATSON b. 1731? in Paisley Scotland were brothers. I am willing to share what I have about Andrew and William WATSON, and would like to hear back from you about this. 2. C.A.
    3. Help. I've hit a brick wall! My John T. Smith was born in either in Pennsylvania or New York on November 28, 1821. He left home around 1836-1842 and came to Illinois where he lived in Victoria, Knox County, Illinois for several years. He moved to the Knoxville, Knox County area where he married Antoinette Pratt in 1852 and had 3 children, and married Lovisa Allen in 1866 and had 3 more children. He died in the Knoxville on November 23, 1901. I'm looking for any parent or sibling information. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I have found 3 of this children's marriage and death records, as well as his second wife's and they do not tell me where he came from. His obituary says Pennsylvania, but the census records list NY. I have not been able to come up with a death certificate for him as of yet. Does anyone know of any other way to access any additional information or is this the end of my line! Thanks again.

    2. Hello, Does anyone have any information on the 1820 or 1830 census for Franklin Co. Pa. concerning Montgomery Township, possibly the town of Mercersburg. Emanuel Rupe/Rupp in the 1830 census. I would like to know what it says about him and any other family members. Also is Emanuel Rupe/ Rupp in the 1820 census for the same area? Where would I find marriage records for this period? Emanuel Rupp/Rupe married Catherine Scott 1825-1830, probably. I am trying to find out sho Emanuel Rupp's parents were, and understand that he may have been raised by a brother, William Rupp/Rupe. Thanks you for your time, Nicky Eickerman Vancouver, Wa.

    1. [PAFRANKL] Mowreys & Cromers in Franklin County, PAa
    2. I am probably repeating myself, but I am at a loss at finding information in Franklin County on my Mowrey & Cromer relation from Franklin County. John Mowrey, b. 4/3/1814, Peters Township - son of ?Daniel Mowrey, b. 5/1788-d. 1857, Chambersburg? Wife: Mary Cromer, m. 3/10/1836 - Mercersburg Siblings: Jacob William Joseph Daniel ? Mary Cromer, b. 5/21/1816 - daughter of George & AnaMaria (Rummel) Cromer Siblings: Josiah Elizabeth Margaret George John Besore Jacob Frederick Jeremiah Besore Andrew Jackson Hannah Esther Both families lived in Franklin County, probably about 1810-1840, after which they moved first to Washington County, MD, then part of the boys moved to Indiana. The spelling of Mowrey may have been Mowery or Mowry or even Maurer at that time. According to one source, George Cromer lived in the 'Jordan' Farm south of Mercersburg and the Mowreys lived on the McDowell or McDonel farm between Bridgeport & Campbell Town at least in 1814. Any help would be appreciated!! as I have hit a dead end in Franklin County. Marilyn Barber Indiana

    1. [PAFRANKL] Gelwicks & Zimmerman
    2. Judith Hall
    3. Well, I've been faithfully reading the mailings as they come in, hoping that (a) I'll be able to be helpful to someone else or (b) that someone else will ask something related to my folks. Not much luck on either side so far, so I guess it's time to ask my own question! My grandfather, Luther C. Gelwicks, was born in Franklin County Sept. 18, 1853. He ran away from home as a teenager and eventually settled in Delta County, Colorado--but that's another story. His father was Charles Gelwicks b. ca. 1812, his mother was Mary E. (probably for Elizabeth) Couts, born ca. 1825. Charles' father was probably named Daniel. One of Luther's sisters was named Charlotte, b. ca. 1848; she married McCauley Zimmerman in 1870 and they had three children: Cornelia, Gracie, and Guy. I think the family continued to live in Franklin County into the 20th century, probably in Sylvan in Warren Twp. Charles was a farmer, in Guilford Twp. in 1850 and in Warren Twp. in 1860. There was also a daughter named Eleanor, b. ca. 1850, and a daughter Anna, b. ca. 1858. Any of this ring any bells with anybody out there? Gelwicks and Couts are also spelled Gelwix and Koutz, not to mention all the possible misspellings. For all who've read this far, thanks! Judy Hall

    2. Gaile L. Thomas
    3. Hello This is my first message to this list. I have a Col. Samuel Culbertson who was the eldest son of Irish Alexander Culbertson of "Culbertson Row, Pa. Samuel's second wife was Elizabeth McClay of Lurgan Twp., daughter of Hon. John McClay, Feb. 4, 1777, at Rocky Spring Church. She was born in 1755 and died June 4, 1817. They had a daughter Eleanor, born Aug. 9 , 179--; died Jan. 19, 1852. Eleanor CULBERTSON married William McCWEN/McCUNE of Franklin Co. Pa. sometime before 1813 in Franklin Co. Pa. In 1833 they moved to near Columbus, Ohio, and in 1836, moved to Lacon, Marshall Co., Illinois. Would anyone on the list have any information on my McCwen/McCune line that might be of help to me as I know absolutely nothing other than his name. I know that he was killed in a stagecoach accident in Lacon, Marshall, Co., Illinois and died shortly afterward July 14, 1837. Does anyone know who his parents were, etc. One of her sisters Amelia CULBERTSON married John THOMPSON of Franklin Co., Pa in 1811 and moved to Blue Rock Tp., Muskingum Co., Ohio, in 1825. Anyone know anything about the THOMPSON line? Thank you Gaile

    2. Hello David! I tried to do a quick lookup for you in my Civil War resource books, but, of course, ol' Benjamin Smith tuned into 50 Benjamin Smiths from PA. (I have Smith in one of my lines & I hate it!) I am sending you below the first 20 Benjamin Smiths information. Someone on the list may recognize a Franklin Co Civil War company in the 20 company names shown, all from PA. I will try to send you the remaining 30 Benjamin Smiths & their companies, but it really takes time that I don't have right now. I am leaving the country this Sat. for a month - if I don't get back with you before I go & if you still don't find the right Benjamin Smith, remind me in a month & I will look up the remaining 30 Benjamin Smiths from PA. Do any of these 20 Benjamin Smiths sound like yours? Any idea which unit her served with? If you know where he's buried, many times the name of his company is written on the tombstone. Also look in the county history books, many of the soldiers & their companies were named in the county histories. When you find his company name, you can send to the National Archives for his pension & military records - although they are charging an arm & a leg right now - I think $20.00 a piece ($40.00 for both pension & military records) It used to be $4.00 each - I think it's outrageous to charge $20.00 each!
