For those of you researching in Illinois, I just saw this message on the Illinois mailing list: Roger Cramer Peoria, AZ >>Did you know that you can get free uncertified death certificates from the state of IL from 1916-1949 by emailing secryan@ccgate.sos.state.il.us Just send the person's name and if you know the approximate date and county via email with your address and they will send the information within 3 weeks for free.<<
I have a copy of a transcript of the Saint Thomas Evangelical Lutheran Church Parish Records, 1837-1960 and will be happy to do lookups of births, baptisms, marriages, and funerals. Unfortunately, the lists of communicants and confirmands in the original registers are not included in this transcript. The original records are at the Lutheran Theological Seminary, Gettysburg. I have transcribed the 1751 Cumberland County tax list for the townships that now are located in Franklin County. The list is on the USGW site or can be reached at this address: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/pa/franklin/taxlist.htm Carolyn
Who was looking for McClellan? I've found my copy of "Some Early History of Upper Strasburg Pennsylvania," and can share some McClellan stuff if you do not already have access to this source. Carol
Bill: The Letterkenny Army Depot was established in 1941. It encompasses five churches, five church cemeteries and three private cemeteries. Twenty thousand acres was purchased by the U.S. government, and about 1,000 residents were forced to relocate. Source:(Upper) Strasburg and Vicinity, bicentennial booklet. I understand that when cemeteries are acquired, the graves must be inventoried. Kittochtinny Historical Society in Chambersburg has a card index of local burials. Have you inquired there? Carol
Hi List, Does anyone have information on the history of the Letterkenny Depot? I am interested in when the government established it, how the land was acquired etc. My ancestors; ggg grandafther Jacob Hauck and wife Elizabeth were farmers in the area of Pleasant Hall, and I'm curious as to whether family land may have been part of the depot holdings, and whether any old cemeteries are there. Jacob died in 1813, and I have been having trouble finding his burial site and Elizabeth's. My gg grandfather John S. Hawk appears in Newburg, Cumb. Co. in the 1840 census. Don't know where he was before then, or the site of his burial either. -- Bill Hawk
Didn't see an answer to Gary's question about Lutheran Church records, but the church records for Salem Church (aka Shearer's church) have been transcibed. There are copies at Kittochtinny Historical Society and at the DAR library in Washington DC that I know of - I understand that they are also available from LDS on microfilm. Be sure to order the transcibed copy unless you read German. About the map - I found a copy at a Chambersburg gas station - paid $1.95, then the tourist bureau sent another one. Their address is - Cumberland Valley Visitors Center 1235 Lincoln Way East Chambersburg, PA 17201 The map shows about every road in the county, plus the townships. Hi Gary, I would appreciate it if you would share your answer about there being any Lutheran birth records for the time frame around 1830. I am seeking information on an 1826 birth. Janet
Someone posted a URL that would yield a travel packet about Franklin County, including a map. I sent for it, but it the packet hasn't come yet. Maybe whoever it was would post the URL again. Also, I have a small map, the source of which I know not, which shows the townships, some towns, and some topographical features. I've been meaning to mention that I would be glad to send a Xerox of it to anyone who would like it. You'd have to send me your snail mail address, since I lack scanning or fax equipment, but you could do that to me offlist, if you don't want to broadcast it to the whole list. The other day, I was watching an old tape from some months ago, and there was a report (on ABC, I think it was), about one of Representative Bud Schuster's pet pork barrel projects--a highway exit in Greene Township--that is being opposed vehemently by many residents. There were a lot of views of the countryside, and I was stunned by how beautiful it is. I've never been there, obviously. Some day, maybe. Judy Hall
Hello, Can anyone please let me know where Montgomery Twp. is located in Franklin Co.? I see in the 1830 census index that there is an: Emanuel Rupe and a John Rupe residing in Montgomery Twp. Also, if anyone has a quick access to this census, I would like to know how old Emanuel and John were in 1830, and any information the census might add. There is also a John Rupp listed in the 1830 census and I can only read: from "Green Oa" I was wondering if this is anywhere near Mercersberg? Thank you for any assistance. Nicky
Hi, I am researching my Lowry ancestors: my great, great, grandfather is Benjamin H. Lowry. His death certificate (from Washington Co., MD) lists his birthplace as Franklin County, PA on August 2, 1830. His father is listed as George Lowry and mother is unknown. Benjamin's obituary (February 8, 1911) lists surviving brothers: Charles of Sharpsburg pike and Peter of Locust Grove. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone else interested in the Lowrys of Franklin and Washington Counties. In addition, any advice on where I might look for Benjamin's birth records would be appreciated. Benjamin and his family attended and are buried in the graveyard of the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, so I'd assume Lutheran records would be my best source. Are there existing Lutheran birth records for Franklin County from 1830? Thanks for any assistance you can provide, Gary Nigh

Hi Folks, I am researching ancestors and descendants of Rev. JOHN SNOKE, born 1785. He lived in Mifflin Twp, Cumberland County. Some of his sons moved to Lurgan Twp in Franklin County. A list of his descendants can be found at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~snoke Click on the descendants link. Does anybody have a connection to this family? Personal to Carolyn: Thanks for your note, and get that book up off the floor! Find something else on which your dog can rest his head (actually, he must be a pretty well-trained dog. Mine would have had it out in the backyard in shreds by now). Also thanks for the helpful suggestions. I think I need to clarify--I hadn't realized that Rupp had written so many books, almost all of them about our favorite general area of Pennsylvania. The $1,250 opus was his "Early History of Western Pennsylvania," published in 1846. The book I was thinking of in particular was "The History and Topography of Dauphin, Franklin, Bedford, Adams, and Perry Counties," which no one seems to have (i've checked five used book websites and the National Genealogical Society, so far). And the hunt will go on. And I can't believe I didn't make the connection between Israel D. and the Rupp/Rupe inquiry I was trying to be helpful with. One of Rupp's publications was "A brief biographical memorial of Joh. Jonas Rupp, and complete genealogical register of his lineal descendants, from 1756-1875" (1875). No one seems to have that, either, but I'll keep an eye peeled for it. Judy Hall

I'm looking for any information anyone may have on Stephen Hoepfer who lived in Franklin County (Born - June 17, 1778 Died - Feb. 7, 1848) and was married to Catharine Hoffman (April 15, 1800). They had a son, David Hepfer, and may have also had sons, Samuel and Daniel. I am very interested in finding a link to confirm a relationship between David (b. 1801), Daniel (b. 1806), and Samuel (b. 1810). All of them resided on neighboring farms in Franklin Co. at one time. I believe their birth records may have been destroyed by fire during the Civil War. Thank you.
