11/11/99 Hi: I, too, would be interested to know the location of the Rocky Springs Cemetery, as well as any sources that would tell more about that congregation. Suzy,See the following web site for history of the UCC and the German Reformed Church. http://www.ucc.org/who/ucc/index.html Zion Reformed Church in Chambersburg has a rich history that goes back to 1777 or 1778 when a congregation was formed, and in 1811 the present church was erected. There is a good deal of information about the various Reformed congregations of Franklin County in the 1887 History of Franklin County published by Warner, Beers and Co. There is also a nice little book , "Zion Reformed Church Through Two Hundred Years", written by Pastor Robert Dean Morrison, and published in 1986. -- Bill Hawk
Last year I contacted Ann M. Kenne, College Archivist & Special Collections Librarian at Franklin and Marshall College concerning the German Reformed Church records for Pennsylvania. I incorrectly thought that Franklin and Marshall held those records. She was kind enough to tell me that The Evangelical and Reformed Historical Society, Lancaster Theological Seminary holds the German Reformed Church records for the state of Pennsylvania. The Seminary did not have the church records I was looking for and provided me with the addresses for the appropriate churches in the area I was looking. I then wrote directly to the churches asking for information. Following is the address of the Seminary: The Evangelical and Reformed Historical Society Lancaster Theological Seminary Philip Schaff Library 555 W. >Are there any references available on the German Reformed Church of >Franklin Co, PA? Where would one find info ...> > where is Rocky Springs Church... To all Franklin County researchers: If you are looking for church or cemetery records in Franklin County, you need to contact the Kittochtinny Historical Society - see their webpage at http://www.rootsweb.com/~pakhs/ While the webpage does not go into much detail I can tell you from experience that if church or cemetery records for the county exist, they most likely have it. Very little of this information has been published, but they have an extensive manuscript collection and will do 'lookups' for non-members. If you do much research in this county, it is only $15 a year to join. Included in your dues is a newsletter plus other good stuff. Currently they are abstracting death records from the 1860s. On the manuscript collection. Various people have abstracted and translated the church records and the local chapter of the NSDAR did all the known cemeteries in the county in the 1930s. The cemetery records have been filmed by LDS and are available on loan from Salt Lake. Pennsylvania did not require marriage licensees until a very recent date. A marriage in the church was considered a legal marriage (unlike some states where you must have a license before the church marriage) Kittochtinny has a card file of marriages for the county - taken from church records and other sources. They also have a card file of obituaries. I guess what we really need is a good inventory of what is available in their library. Any volunteers? [Personal note: If there is anyone on this site from the county, please email me privately. We are looking for a land to build a retirement home near Chambersburg. awscks@erols.com About the Rocky Spring Presbyterian Church. I have seen a few records - pew holders in the late 1700s, etc, but no birth or marriages. If anyone knows of these, please post. The church is on the Rocky Spring Road nnw of Chambersburg in Letterkenny Twp. It appears on the map that it is part of Letterkenny Depot, but I know have attended services there and you do not go through any gate as you do for other parts of the Depot, so I would guess that it is outside of the Depot. The church is no longer used for regular services, but they do hold an annual service each fall with a guest minister. The building was damaged by high winds several years ago, but has been beautifully restored. The interior still has the box type of pews with the owners names on the doors. You can recognize lots of Revolutionary War soldiers names there. The church had two original stoves that vent into the attic, the tradition was that they were built that way so that the Indians could not see the smoke when there were services. The man in charge of the restoration said that the smoke 'cured' the beams in the attic and that was one of the reasons they were able to save so much of the original after the wind damage. The graveyard is in good condition. It is one of those copies by the NSDAR so the records are available. Carolyn in VA
The Rocky Springs Cemetery is Located on Rocky Spring road just north of Chambersburg. From the Square of Chambersburg, Follow Lincoln Way West To the first light (Franklin st.) turn right. go approx 2 miles until you come to a fork in the road, bear right.(Letterkenny Road) Go approx. 1 mile look for Rocky Springs Road on left. It has been a while since I've been ther but I think the names of the original congregation are memorialized on a plaque. I do know that some of Chambersburg's more prominent were members and that Sarah Wilson (Founder of Wilson College) is burried there. Rocky Springs Church and cemetery are not located on Letterkenny Army Depot, However, several are. They are all indexed at the Kittoctinny Historical Society and at the Coyle Free Library. -----Original Message----- From: Barbara Rosnagle <brosnagl@swcp.com> To: PAFRANKL-L@rootsweb.com <PAFRANKL-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Thursday, November 11, 1999 10:52 PM Subject: Re: [PAFRANKL] Cemetery at Letterkenny >11/11/99 >Hi: > I, too, would be interested to know the location of the Rocky Springs >Cemetery, as well as any sources that would tell more about that >congregation. >Barbara > >ACMBJC@aol.com wrote: > >> Would this be the Rocky Springs Presbyterian Cemetery? Are there any references available on the German Reformed Church of Franklin Co, PA? Where would one find info if there are none? I was told it was now the United Church of Christ. Would there be an address for the church if it is there today? Suzy
Need proof of a marriage, maybe from the German Reformed Church. Elizabeth BUCHANAN mar. William YATES. Elizabeth was born 1797 Franklin Co, PA. William was born 1807. Their first child was born 1828 Franklin Co, PA. Two of William's brothers had children shown in the German Reformed Church, which, I am told, was west of Chambersburg and is not the United Church of Christ. I don't know if Elizabeth was married in the same church or not. To prove that Elizabeth was a pioneer for my county, I must prove that she was married. Does anyone know where I could find this information? If it helps any, her parents were said to have been John BUCHANAN and Polly POTTS. The first son that was born in 1828 was Samuel Butler Yates, named after an uncle. Suzy
There are a number of cemeteries within Letterkenny Depot, Amy. The land appropriated for the depot included five churches and their cemeteries, plus 3 private cemeteries. Carol
Hi Everyone! I was told that there is an old cemetery located inside Letterkenny Army Depot. Does anyone know anything about this? The person that told me about it said some like it is located in the ammo field?. Thanx! Amy
Would this be the Rocky Springs Presbyterian Cemetery? Probably not, but would be interested to know the answer to Amy's question, as well as the exact location of the Rocky Springs Presbyterian Cemetery. Thanks for any insight or help. I have been searching for the parents of these 2 (Andrew J. & Samuel S. MILLER) for a long time. They were born in York and/or Chambersburg PA in the early 1800s. You would think that since I had 2 brothers, things would be easier. If you check into the changes at the LDS Family Search site at: <A HREF="http://32.96.111.13/Search/searchigi.asp">Custom Search IGI Page</A> http://32.96.111.13/Search/searchigi.asp You will see that it is easier to isolate a family candidate. Anyway, the point of this is that I searched for these 2 again and found a set of parents from that geographical area with 2 sons with the correct names and 10 years on the birth dates. Here are the 2 I am looking at: Andrew MILLER Sex: M Event(s): Birth: 3 Aug 1819 (We have a birthdate of Dec 14, 1826) Somerset, Pennsylvania Parents: Father: Andrew MILLER Mother: Catherine DEETER and Samuel MILLER Sex: M Event(s): Birth: 26 May 1817 (We have a birthdate of Feb 8, 1822) Somerset, Pennsylvania Parents: Father: Andrew MILLER Mother: Catherine DEETER Perhaps they didn't know their real dates. Is anyone on the list working on these people? I cannot be sure if they are mine or not. Susan Marshall EAlt117@aol.com
Good evening! Could someone direct me to where I might find adoption records for Cumberland / Franklin County from the early part of the 1900's (~ 1910). One of my grandmothers sisters were adopted out and we would like to try to get a copy of the information. Thank you for your help in advance! Amy
