    1. [PAFRANKL] A Little Bit of History Trivia
    2. Mike J. Horton
    3. Regardless of the circumstances the source asserts, Senator David Rice Atchinson was not the 12th U.S. president, though I'm sure his descendants would like it to be that way. Nobody becomes the President of the United States until the oath of office is given/taken and David Rice Atchinson did not take the oath of office. You know they say you should learn something new each and every day... well I just did and now I'm passing this little bit of history on to you. How many of you out there knew this??? Donna HELLER ZINN of Cumberland Co., PA. ps. This was taken off of MailBits.com: Trivia Subscription ************************************************** The 12th president of the United States was David Rice Atchinson, a Missouri senator who served for one day in 1849. The new president usually took office on March 4. But that year it fell on a Sunday, and although President James Polk left on schedule, Zachary Taylor did not take the oath until the next day. Rice was president pro tempore of the Senate, and under the provisions of the Constitution, he served until Taylor was sworn in. Atchinson neither started a war nor raised any taxes: he just left quietly after 24 hours. (Source: FACTS ABOUT THE PRESIDENTS)

    1. [PAFRANKL] Marriage Lookup - 1836 - Mercersburg
    2. Does anyone have access to Marriage records for Mercersburg? I am looking for more information regarding the marriage of John Mowrey to Mary Cromer, daughter of George Cromer, March 10, 1836, in Mercersburg. Any further information would be appreciated. I am trying to find more information on the family of John Mowrey. Possibly a Daniel Mowrey. The Mowreys were from Peters Township. The Cromers were on the 'Jordan' farm, south of Mercersburg. Thank you for your help. I haven't found any information in Franklin County on these 2 families as yet. Sincerely, Marilyn Barber Danville, IN

    3. The same holds true for the deeds! The Harts are doing a great job of running this board, but we all need to contribute. Doesn't anyone else have any to add? If everyone on the list would add one or two this would be a great resource. 3. In the past few months I have posted these wills on the Franklin County board. These are not all my ancestors, I just take a few minutes to jot them down whenever I find a mention of Franklin County. Only a couple of others have added more wills. Surely more people on this list have wills that they could add ! It only works if we all contribute. 3. Hi List: Searching for information on William SHORT (b.pre.1770 presumably buried in the Presbyterian Church Cemetery along Rt.75 in Concord, Franklin Co., PA.) who was presumably married to Elizabeth DUNBAR. NOTE: Could the above William SHORT be the same as the William SHORT from a port in Ireland and listed in 30-Dec-1772 as being an indentured servant to a Lamb Talbot and his assigns in Newtown Twp., Bucks Co., PA. for a term of 4 years for 12 pounds [money]??? The children of William Sr. and Elizabeth DUNBAR SHORT: William Jr.; Mary; John; and [daughter] (md. _____ SHOOP). William SHORT Jr. (b.30-Oct-1798 d.14-Apr-1884 in Juniata Co., PA.) md. on 10-Oct-1822 in Juniata Co. to Catherine GRAY (b.20-Mar-1801 in Juniata Co. d.29-Jul-1892 in Juniata Co. d/o James GRAY and Rebecca SHAFFER). NOTE: William SHORT Jr.'s birthplace found as Ireland but has not been proven. Family info. passed down through the years stated that William Jr. "came here" when he was 7 years of age. It also was said that the SHORT Family resided in Hummelstown, Dauphin Co., PA. before moving to Franklin Co.. Open to any hints or suggestions on where to search. Thank you in advance... 1. Re: [PAFRANKL] Joseph GRIPE, "Clergy Old Bapti"
    2. Carolyn K. Shearer
    3. Bill - I checked "Biographical Annals of Franklin County" - two GROVE families but no connections found. No GRIPE listed In M'Cauley's "Historical Sketch of Franklin County", 1878, p 190, there is a Joseph GIPE who is listed as a "Tunker" Bishop in Guilford Twp - this is as close as I could come to the spelling. In this list of ministers of the county there the only denomination with 'Baptist' is 'Seventh Day Baptist.' If you are looking for the correct transcription for the age of Rebecca why not order the census record yourself? You can get them at most research libraries on interlibrary loan or order them from Salt Lake at your local Family History Center. You already have the township and page number so all you need is to order the correct roll of microfilm and look at a picture of the original. There is a "Shearer's Church" at Pleasant Hall - I think the other name is Salem Reformed or E.U.B. The records have been filmed by LDS and are available from Salt Lake. The population of the town in 1900 was only 63, so it may have been the only church in the town. Rocky Spring Church is in Letterkenny Twp, but it was Presbyterian. Kittochtinny has the burials in the graveyard of both churchs. I do not know of any local histories of the area. Carolyn Shearer -----Original Message----- From: William S. The nineteenth century newspapers are stored in little or no temperature or humidity control. Some have even vanished since the were indexed years ago. Is there any enthusiasm out there to preserve this treasure before it's too late? The State Government and other sources frequently finance such efforts. Richard R. Weber

    1. [PAFRANKL] Joseph GRIPE, "Clergy Old Bapti"
    2. William S. Jewell
    3. Surnames: GRIPE, GROVE, EPHREMANT In the 1860 Census for Franklin Co. (see Valley of the Shadow Project), there is listed in Letterkenney Twn., Pleasant Hall P.O.: Joseph GRIPE 54 m w "Clergy Old Bapti" $5000 $300 Mary GRIPE 53 f w Rebecca GROVE 24 f w "Domestic" , and next door is living the family of Andrew GRIPE 28 m w "Farmer" $0 $1500 . I have reason to believe Rebecca GROVE is my great-grandmother, born 31 Jan 1839 in Stony Creek Twn, Somerset Co. (This would make her "21" rather than "24" years old, making either the census-taker or the transcriber wrong. I have looked at the original image on microfilm, and think a case can be made that "21" is written with a pencil mark over the "1" to make it "4". I have written to Valley/Shadow about this, but no reply yet.) (1) Is anything known about the GRIPE family, especially 1850-1870? What church did he minister to? Does it still exist? What is "Old Bapti" - Anabaptist, Mennonite, Old Order Brethren ? How strict were they? Where would records of marriages by JG (abt 1865) be kept? Does anyone know the Gripes' death dates? Why does the name appear so rarely in PA before/after 1860? I presume this family would be considered wealthy, even by Franklin Co. standards? (2) I am especially interested in any collateral information about Rebecca GROVE, as I have identified her in 1850 in Somerset Co., then in Benton Co., MN in 1870. How long did she serve as Domestic to the GRIPEs? Is she related to any other GROVES in Franklin Co? (3) I would appreciate suggestions on collateral historical reading on Letterkenny, UpperStrasburg, Pleasant Hall before, during , and after the Civil War (1855-1867). (4) I welcome any information whatsoever on a family EPHREMANT, EPHERMAN, or ENFREYMONT that may have figured in JG's chruch or personal life. (There is an EPHERMAN family living in Harrisburg in 1860, with no occupation, and who are absent from before/after searches in PA). (5) Are there other transcriptions of the 1860 Census for Letterkenny Twn.? Would anyone be good enough to examine p. 106 of the oiginal image and tell me if they agree with my reading of "21" for Rebecca's age? I apologize for the length of this communication, but I am new to Franklin Co. and to this list. Thanks, Bill Jewell Berkeley, CA
