Hi all, Does anyone have a willbook index for Franklin Co.?? I'm looking for wills on all the WOLF/ WOLFF/ WOLFE people. I'm still looking for the parents of my Jacob L. Wolf, b. 1831. I did find him in the 1900 & 1910 census! In Green Twp. mrd. a second time to a woman named Harriet??? He must have died between 1910 & 1920. Thank you!! Sharon Frank sharon@kua.net
Last fall I was in Franklin County doing research on my husband's family and when I visited the cemetery at Grindstone Hill I was unable to find several of the graves of his ancestors. One was his grandmother who died in 1903 which is not so long ago as to have her tombstone deteriorated to the degree that it cannot be read. So, we came to the conclusion that she probably did not have a tombstone. We saw the sign that they are selling cemetery lots and called the number listed to see if we could get a copy of the layout of the cemetery in an effort to find these missing ancestors. We were amazed that they gentlemen told us they did not have anything that showed the graves! We called around and contacted everyone who we thought could help and got nothing. Now - our question is this: If they have no idea where the unmarked graves are and who is buried there, will they just sell any open ground to anyone who wants a lot? There has got to be a way to find who is buried there and where! Can anyone give me some suggestions on how to find these graves. We have thought about hiring a lawyer and getting an injunction to stop them selling any lots, but there has got to be a better way to find these graves. Janet in Baton Rouge, LA
Hi Everyone! Well I've just found my first link back to the Revolutionary War and I have no idea where to go now. Could someone please give me some suggestions on where I might find information on this ancestor. About the only information I have is his name and that he served under Capt. Walter McKinnie in 1781. Thanx! Amy
Hello from Georgia, Yesterday, while visiting an Antiques Mall/Flea Market in Macon, GA, I came across a "Treasured Memories" book, still in the box. I thought it was a book one could use as a memory book, but it turned out to be a book that was given to a family from a funeral home as a memory of a departed family member. I felt so sad. I just could not leave the book laying there among the junk, so I bought it. I am sure there is someone out there that is researching this family and would treasure this little book. I know I would! The book is in memory of: M. Grace Smith died May 13, 1990 Age 105 Chambersburg, Franklin Co., PA It also lists her birthdate, mother and father's name, names of children, etc. If you are researching this family and can identify this lady, I would love to hear from you. A fellow researcher Annemarie

From "History and Topography of Dauphin, Cumberland, Franklin, Bedford, Adams and Perry Counties" I. Daniel Rupp, 1846. p 458. "Turnpikes" (of Franklin County) The main turnpike road, by the southern route to Pittsburg, passes through this county by way of Shippensburg, Chambersburg, St Thomas and Loudon, thence onward to Pittsburgh." (Note: This is present day US 30, known locally as the Lincoln Highway. cks) "The main turnpike road is intersected by the turnpike from Baltimore by way of Gettysburg. In the south and southwestern part of the county another turnpike road passes through the county which branches from Pittsburg near McConnellstown in Bedford County (now McConnellsburg in Fulton County. cks) passes south eastward through Mercersburg, by Upton, Greencastle and Waynesboro to Emmittsburg in Maryland and thence to Baltimore." While this account does not mention any north south roads two old ones were Route 75 which runs from the most northern tip of the county through Dry Run, Spring Run, Fannettsburg, then to Fort Loudon where it crosses the Lincoln Highway and then south to Mercersburg. This road was once part of the old Indian or Tuscarora Path. Another old road ran from Harrisburg and Carlisle to Shippensburg, Chambersburg, Greencastle and south through the valley of Virginia. Current US Rt 11 and Interstate 81 follow approximately the same route. To answer the question about Gen Braddock. I do not know if he recruited in Franklin County but believe he probably did. My ancestor Daniel Reisher owned land in Little Conewago Township "Baltimore County" but actually in Lancaster County PA at the time of the French and Indian War, He marched to Pittsburg with Braddock according to a letter written by his son. Daniel later moved to Pittsburg for a short time, then was back in Franklin County where he was taxed in 1786 in Peters Twp. The county history states that he was one of the first owners of land in Chambersburg. For more information on this family including the full text of the letter, see "Reisher, Risher family Records" posted on the Franklin county site under Bible records.

Can anyone give me information about early wagon roads into Franklin Co.? I'm interested in roads from the east in about 1750-1765. Where did they come from and where did they go to the west? Where can I read more about transport in this area at that time? R. Etter Asheville, NC
Does anyone know when the earlliest iron industry was developed in Franklin County and in what part ? I live in Fayette County and am familiar with our furnaces, but not the ones out east.
I have never seen a history of this particular furnace but Harry Foreman wrote a book "Birth of the Iron Industry in Franklin County." As he seemed to have specialized in this corner of the county, he most likely included some information on the site. -----Original Message----- From: vandc@bellatlantic.net <vandc@bellatlantic.net> To: PAFRANKL-L@rootsweb.com <PAFRANKL-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Wednesday, January 12, 2000 9:26 PM Subject: [PAFRANKL] Richmond Furnace >Hi, > >I was wondering if any one knew of a Histoy book that included >information about Richmond Furnace. Hello fellow listers: Here is a tip that was posted on the Perry County, PA. list. I had never been aware of this type of register before, but it does sound promising. Thought maybe the rest of the lists would be interested in this genealogical source. Best wishes on your family research!
