    2. Amy C. Skvarka
    3. Hi Everyone, A few people have contacted me about the results I received from my query on Revolutionary War Soldiers and where to find information on them. I hope they help! 1.) Daughter of the American Revolutionary War web site - http://www.dar.org/ 2.) DAR Library in Washington DC 3.) Finding pension records at the National Archives. You can request these by filling out a form. But, the more you know about when and where he served, the better. 4.) I suggest you contact: Cumberland County Historical Society, 21 North Pitt Street, Carlisle, PA 17013. There Web site is: http://www.historicalsociety.com 5.) Franklin County Rev War soldier book done by the local chapter of the NSDAR. 6.) DAR Patriot Index. If he is listed you can write for a set of application papers that someone filed to join the society on his service. 7.) "Genealogical Encyclopedia of the Colonial Americas" by Christina Schaefer It's $50.00, but can be found in the library via interlibrary loan. The book is set up by state, town, county and tells where each of the original records are kept, which include the churches. Bibliographically it is outstanding. Then the # of the film is given for whatever that you are looking for, your convenience and WHERE exactly the film can be located. (which is usually locally held) WHAT A BOOK!!!! ISBN # 0-8063-1576-8 8.) Check out the following; http://www.webb.net/sites/mac_home/mac4a.res.html#AMR There are 8 links on it that may be useful. 9.) http://www.genealogy-books.com/books/gpcrw.html If anyone has anything else to add, please let me know I've started a running list. Bye! Amy

    2. Donna
    3. Hi Fellow Listers: This was posted to the York County List and was taken from another list. Sorry if it is a duplicate! Thought this may be of interest to a few of you out there! Donna HELLER ZINN of Newville, Cumberland Co., PA. ***************** FINDING OLD, ABANDONED CEMETERIES When dealing with cemetery records, people often ask, "How can I find old, abandoned cemeteries if no one takes care of them and they're out in the woods somewhere or forgotten?" You might think those cemeteries are forgotten, but they're not. Property laws required landowners to disclose whether there were burials or burial grounds on property when the property was sold. Usually, those burial grounds are recorded on plat maps. If they're not, check older plat maps, such as those from the 1880's. These maps might pinpoint cemeteries that have somehow disappeared from the more current plat maps. Be certain to check them. You can usually find plat maps in public libraries. ---------------------------------------------- Diana J. 3. Carol, I have been in touch with the Historical society and they do not list his great grandmother, thought his great grandfather is listed. We were unable to find his tombstone and cannot locate her grave! 2. Carolyn K. Shearer
    3. I have gone to National Archives to check the original of the Franklin County 1790 census- after much hassle they finally brought them to my desk. At first they insisted that the printed book was all that was available. Anyway - the townships are as given. One thing to note - the transcription of the names is not very good. Walker and Welker and Walter are all jumbled for example. The only thing I have been able to do to sort townships is cross match names on the 1800 census which does list the township. From some of my notes - Using "Heads of Families - Pennsylvania" where Franklin County begins on p 112, Metal Twp (formed 1796 from Fannett) begins about with Thomas Armstrong in the first column on page 113, Andrew Spence in the first column on pg 114 lwas taxed in Peters Twp in 1784, John Buzzard (Bossert) in the first column on p 116 lived in Hamilton Twp. The bottom on the last column on p 117 and the first column on p 118 are in Guilford - the names Joseph Liles through Ann Fullerton are all mentioned in a 1785 deed. The third column on pg 119 is the Boro of Chambersburg. At least part of p 121 is Antrim Twp. Maybe if others could add their names we could figure out where the lines stop and start! 3. Hello all, In the 1790 Pennsylvania Census is there anyway to determine a township for Franklin Co? My gggggrandfather was listed in the census but I have no way of knowing specifically where he lived. His name is Dugal McCartney and is listed on page 115, at the end of the first column. The problem being, 5 townships are listed: Fannett, Hamilton, Letterkenney, Montgomery and Peters. He may have married in Franklin County and had at least 4 of his 5 children before he moved to Huntingdon Co. in 1795. He was Scottish and Presbyterian, were there any specific communities of the later? Where could I find vital records of this early date besides church records? Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated....... Thanks, Sharon
