Here's some general info I found:From Alice Eichholz, Ancestry's Red Book, Pennsylvania Although a colonial law of 1682 provided for the recording of births, marriages, and burials in Pennsylvania, few if any of these events were ever entered in civil records. A new law in the mid-ninteenth century required these events be recorded by the county register of wills, with copies sent to Harrisburg. Some of these records are still in the courthouses, and others are at the Pennsylvania State Archives, where microfilms of many are available. Indexes to these records are arranged first by county, then by event, then by year. Films of some of these records are also available at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. >From 1860 through 1893, and in some cases to a later date, births and deaths were recorded in Philadelphia and other cities—Allegheny, Easton, Harrisburg, Pottsville, Pittsburgh, and Williamsport—although there are gaps. Since 1885 the clerk of the orphans' court in each county has had the responsibility of recording marriages. Films of some of these records are at the state archives and the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. Births and deaths in Pennsylvania were also recorded in the county orphans' courts for the period 1893 through 1905, and here also may be found delayed birth records for events occurring as far back as the 1860s. The state archives has films of some of these records; the Historical Society of Pennsylvania has those for Philadelphia. The official repository for early records in Franklin County is The Kittochtinny Historical Society. Write to them at 175 E. King St., Chambersburg, PA 17201. Be sure to include a sase, and a small donation wouldn't hurt. Be prepared to wait as they are swamped and understaffed. For the court house, write to : Franklin County Courthouse Register of Wills 157 Lincoln Way East Chambersburg. PA, 17201 -- Bill Hawk

    1. [PAFRANKL] Better than making a copy of census record
    2. gayle
    3. We are hearing reminders about saving a copy of our census form--a good idea, but as genealogists, the information our families want to know is already going to be available, but the real thing we need to be concerned about is giving as much information as possible. That means women include your maiden name as part of your name. Mary Smith Schultz If they ask for birth or marriage year, include month as well. Feb 1945 If they ask for birth place don't say MO, say Osceola, St. Clair Co, MO. If you have twins, indicate it near their name. Mary (twin) Susie (twin) Under occupation write the normal one, and also include genealogist teacher/genealogist Look it over, you will get the idea. Give them "more not less"

    3. I am looking for information on the surname HOLMAN from Franklin Co records beginning 1820. Franklin Co marriage records show the marriage of Eliza Holman to William Fitzsimmons in 1825. In the 1820 census there was a John Holman in Metal Twp and a Henry Holman in Antrim Twp, both had females in the household that would come close to her age. William Fitzsimmons was the son of Patrick Ftizsimmons of Huntingdon Co, Pa. In 1831 Wm and Eliza (aka Ann/Anna E.) settled and remained in Crawford Co, OH for the rest of their lives. If anyone knows of HOLMAN history or of anyone who may have this information, it would be greatly appreciated................................Pat Lenhart

    3. Bill, Any chance your McCulloughs are the same line as those buried next to my Hoch ancestors in Mercersburg's Fairview Cemetery in Franklin County? The existing stones are for Eli McCullough, 1835-1896 Rebecca, his wife, 1837-1918 Sue A. McCullough, 1869-1959 I suspect the empty spaces between the McCullough and Hoch stones are where Eli's parents, John and Nancy McCullough, are buried. The Hoch and McCullough families lived near each other in the Stitzels Crossroads area in the mid-1850s.
