I am planning on visiting a few cemeteries in Franklin Co. but need some help with driving directions. I know how to get to Macedonia Church Cemetery and Cedar Hill so I would be leaving from one of those two places. My starting point is from Baltimore, coming up 70W to 81N. I am looking for driving directions to Church of the Brethren, Welsh Run; Kennedy Church Cemetery, Welsh Run; Welsh Run Cemetery, Welsh Run; Dunkers Graveyard, Kauffman Station; Lincoln Cemetery, Chambersburg; Germantown Bethel Cemetery, Cascade; and Montgomery Brethren in Christ, Upton Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Kathy
Carolyn, thanks for the map. I appreciate it.

Linda, I don't know of any with twp. borders. Here are two online possibilities to look at: The 1895 PA Atlas is on line at: http://www.LivGenMI.com/1895pa The US Census TIGER map service allows you to form your own map and print out a .gif image at: http://tiger.census.gov/ Have fun, Bill Hawk
Here are some Franklin county maps: USGS - Current (no townships) http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.simple.html "The Diamond" Chambersburg, 1858 http://jefferson.village.virginia.edu/vshadow2/claims/diamond.html If these do not help, I have made an annotated map of the townships in the county with their dates of formation. Will send directly to anyone who can receive and read an attachment. Carolyn
Hello, Hopefully someone will be able to guide in the right direction. I'm looking for a place on-line where I can find a map of Franklin County, PA, preferably with townships outlined, in which I'll be able to print out for references. Thanks for any help you can provide. Linda
Hi All, An interesting article reached my mailbox from About.com & I thought I'd share the link for those who might be interested. Move over Columbus - the Ancient Romans got there first! So it was the sailors of Imperial Roman fleet who may have been the first to reach the New World! Back in 200 AD. http://royalty.about.com/medianews/royalty/library/weekly/aa021400a.htm Sincerely, Sharon Lantzy Wygant SSchu22739@aol.com Surnames: Anderson, Hasselor, Kingston, Lamer (Leamer, Lehmer), Lantzy (Lenzi), McAnulty,McCullough, McLane (McLain,McLean, McLene), O'Cain Patton, Robertson/Robinson, Shankle, Simpson, Sitter, Steen, Stuchell, Thompson (Thomson), White, Wygant.
I would like to thank everyone that responded to my posting looking for information on Hugh Gilvin / Gelvin. I have received a lot of great information and may have found a way around my brick wall after almost 14 years. Thanks Dan
I wanted to thank you all (again) for your responses and help. I wanted you all to know that I received some excellent help from this list! One person pointed me to MENNO-ROOTS-L, which I have since subscribed to. Others offered wonderful help and suggestions. I met someone who's family also went from Franklin County to Whiteside County! Finally, one Angel even found both branches of my family in Franklin County in the 1860's! Armed with all the new information and ideas I've received from the listmembers, I'm now ready to fully begin my search in Franklin County. Thank you, Krista
Carol, Thanks for helping clear up the confusion. I do know that my ggrandfather lived next to the Allegheny River, so I guess I am looking for the city of Franklin, and not the county. Thanks Again, John > John's Franklin and Oil City are on the Allegany River in Venango County, > in the northeastern corner of PA. (Franklin County is in the south central > part of the state.) John's Franklin and Oil City are on the Allegany River in Venango County, in the northeastern corner of PA. (Franklin County is in the south central part of the state.) Carol
HELP. I'm confused. My ggrandfather was a station agent on the Allegheny River, I believe in the city of Franklin. I've also seen mention of Oil City, and Franklin County. Can someone please help me sort out just where these towns are, and if there is any relation to Franklin County?
Hi List, I went to the Fed archives and found the info below. 1920 Census 5th ward Chambersberg Borough 15th January District No 14 Ed 12 Sheet 11 Name of institution Children's Orphan Home Name Lohr Alice Head w F 45 s Matron Children's Home Walker Jennie Assistant w F 69 s Assistant Children's Home Kissel John H inmate w M 11 s none Peterson Ira inmate w M 11 s none Peterson Lester inmate w M 07 s none Miller Harry inmate w M 11 s none Miller ? ? ? inmate w M 06 s none Blocker Charles inmate w M 11 s none (could be BOCKER) Blocker Harry inmate w M 09 s none Blocker Lester inmate w M 08 s none Stoler Ralph inmate w M 08 s none Patterson David inmate w M 09 s none Hockenberg Lambert Inmate w M 08 s none could be Hockenberg Aughenbaugh Howard Inmate w M 09 s none Aughenbaugh Harry inmate w M 06 s none Ritter Joseph inmate w M 09 s none He_ _her Irene inmate w F 09 s none Kulm mildred inmate w F 3 5/12 s none McClure Virginia inmate w F 3 9/12 s none Hombaker Ray inmate w M 07 s none Brown Georgette Servant B F 45 s none Most of the Males in the home were never adopted, at a certain age they were taken too farms and used as labor for the farmers in the area, some never had a home, lived in the barns of the farmer, and worked as slave labor. Most were indentured when they turned 21. The females however were more adoptable, and as you can see not too many females in the Orphanage. When familles came to adopt or to see the children, they had too stand in a row and each child had to perform a song or a poem. At Christmas time the children would get a treat from the local girls colleges, they would walk to the college and each child would get an orange or a piece of fruit, then they would go to the other Girls College and they would get a piece of candy. When they would get too play outside they would sometimes get to watch the funerals that took place from across the way (cemetery) because they did not know any better they would play a made up game called ashes too ashes. This information was taken from a child that was in this Orphanage in 1920. Hope this info can help others.
Hi! I am brand new to this list having just found that my great-great grandmother was Susannah Gsell from Franklin County, PA. She was born in 1840 and married John D. High (1833-1914). The Grells and the Highs moved to Whiteside County, IL in or before 1865. They were Mennonites. Is there any way to get church records (marriage, birth, christening, etc.) from the church? Is there a good source of information I can research? Thanks for any and all help!
Jim, I have an Emmanuel J. WOLFORD in my family with virtually no information other than a little for his spouse. Emmanuel was married to my Paternal GrandMother's sister, Nellie A. KAUFFMAN. Nellie's bd was 30 Jul 1882, dd unknown and her parents were George Allison KAUFFMAN and Mary S. LENHARR. Advise if there is a connection. Rich Long Laurel, MD
There is a Jeremiah Gelvin of Letterkenny Twp in the will abstracts who died 1803-4. No son Hugh in the will, but will send you a copy of the abstract if you do not already have same. Nothing in the two county histories that I have.
