What resources are available in Greencastle PA? Library, Historical or Genealogical Society?I will be sending a friend out to scout out WIlliam Rankin! Judge William R. Rankin (1816-1885) the eldest son of A. Rankin Esquire of Greencastle, PA was the first Probate Court Judge (1850) of Franklin County, Ohio. The present Probate Court Judges would like to honor him by placing a likeness/photo of him on the wall of the courthouse vestibule with ALL of the other judges that have ever served Franklin County. We are interested in communicating with anyone who might have a picture of him or who is connected to this line. I have taken on this project for the Probate Court. Carol A. Hubbard, Columbus, Ohio.
The Washington County (Maryland) Historical Society in Hagerstown has updated their website. The Callendar of Events for this year is now available online. The url for the site is: http://www.rootsweb.com/~mdwchs/ Thanks! Don & Jeanine
John, This Pine Grove Furnace was in Dickinson, then Penn, and now Cooke Twp Cumberland county. Think Frank was referring to one in Franklin County.... -- joe
Frank: I have a copy of the "History of Pine Grove Furnace" by Lenore Embick Flower which was published by The Cumberland County Historical Society in 1975. Unfortunately, none of your ancestors are mentioned as being associated with its history. The Ege's are the primary family associated with the furnace. Some of the other surnames mentioned are Thornburg, Watt, Fuller, Blackfort, Wahley, Moorehead, Sours, Martin and Hyle. Subject above was my gggrandpa born in Maryland @ 1835. He was the son of George & Rebecca PENNYBACKER MAYBERRY, dau of Dirck Pennybacker & Hanna De Haven of Pennsylvania. Both MAYBERRY and PENNYBACKER families were involved in the Iron Refining business. I suspect that Israel was involved with the Richmond Furnace and possibly the Pine Grove Furnace in Franklin County, Pa. George Mayberry was in Partnership with Benjamin Pennybacker brother of George's wife Rebecca. The Company name was "The George Mayberry & Company" AKA "The Irish Gentleman" George also had a brother named William, and may have been a relative of the earlier Thomas MAYBERRY AKA "The Iron Master" who was known to be a contractor to the Quartermaster of the Army in furnishing Sheet Iron or Steel Plating to the Army Stores and operated Furnaces near Hereford and Pine Grove Forges. I would like to have copies of any local History or family history of any of the above named family. Also, any reference to that information on file at any Historical Society or Library Books on file at local libraries. I am trying to obtain a reference to the facts and where they are on file for future verification. I am also, contemplating a trip to that area and would like to know where to find information. What city and name of Library etc. I would appreciate any information that I can assemble. Thanks, Frank Mayberry ggggrandson of George Mayberry & Rebecca Pennybacker Mayberry. Mickey The "Pennsylvania Line" has no listing for Rock Forge in PA. You may have better luck posting to MDFREDER-L or MDWASHIN-L, although a search of their archives did not turn up a Rock Forge either. Have you tried the USGS mapping and locating service? http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html Happy hunting Bill Hawk

The official repository for early records in Franklin County is The Kittochtinny Historical Society. Write to them at 175 E. King St., Chambersburg, PA 17201. Be sure to include a sase, and a small donation wouldn't hurt. Be prepared to wait as they are swamped and understaffed. If you are going to have continuing interest in Franklin Co., membership is a good deal at $15.00. - Bill Hawk
Is there a township or community in Franklinn County called Rock Forge? Possibly in Washington Co. MD? Thanks for your help. Mickey
