    1. [PAFRANKL] 1778 Tax List - Update #2
    2. Last night it occurred to me that I had no idea where Derry Township was. When I discovered its approximate location I decided to study all of the townships that are listed on the map. I knew Cumberland was bigger in 1778, but not that big!! It included all of Juniata and most of Mifflin Counties as well. I probably should have broadcast to these lists, and I apologize for my lack of knowledge. Anyway, for those of you who have received information, I put together the list of Townships and their approximate locations in present day county boundaries. Kathy Allen - southeast Cumberland Antrim - southern Franklin Armagh - northern Mifflin East Pennsboro - northeast Cumberland Fannett - northern Franklin Fermanagh - northern Juniata Greenwood - part of north Perry and north Juniata Guilford - southeast Franklin Hamilton - central Franklin, south of Letterkenny Hopewell - west Cumberland Lack - south Juniata and Mifflin Letterkenny - central west Franklin Lurgan - central east Franklin Middleton - central Cumberland, between the Pennsboros Milford - central Juniata Newton - northwest Cumberland Peters - southwest Franklin Rye - east Perry, between Greenwood and Tyrone Toboyne (spelled Teboyne) - west Perry Tyrone - central Perry West Pennsboro - central Cumberland, between Hopewell and Middleton Carlisle - same Cumberland borough

    1. [PAFRANKL] OYLERs
    2. Sharon Houck Frank
    3. Hello all, Does anyone know anything about the OYLERs buried in Cedar Grove Cem. in Chambersburg?? In peticular a Philip OYLER b. 1787, d. 1850 and his wife Mary b. 1792, d. 1861. I have OYLERs in Fulton County and I'm trying to see if they could "possibly" be the parents. I have looked the OYLERs of Franklin Co. up in the 1850 census and found them. It says they were all born in Pa. But my OYLER was b. in 1811 in Germany. I know sometimes the census is wrong.............. Mine came in 1821 to Baltimore when he was 10 yrs old. So he would have come with his parents but there are no ship records for that year to Baltimore so.................. Any help is greatly appreciated! Sharon Frank sharon@kua.net

    1. [PAFRANKL] 1778 List
    2. In repayment to all of those kind people who have done lookup requests, I now offer mine. I have a list of 1778 taxables for Cumberland County. This would include townships in Franklin and Perry Counties, plus Lack Township. The list gives first and last names, and the township they resided or were taxed in. That's it--no birthdates or marriages. Please email me PRIVATELY with your request so as not to clog up the lists. I will post responses to the Cumberland list so that the information can be archived. Kathy

    1. [PAFRANKL] Townships along the border of PA & MD
    2. Gordon Lynch
    3. Hello All, Again, thank you to all who answered my request for names and maps of the townships (and election districts) along the PA & MD border. I tried to answer each personally but if I missed you I apologize. Some requested that I post the answers to the list, so here is what I have so far (please notify me of errors or omissions). I still need the districts for Garrett and Allegany counties of MD. All are from west to east unless otherwise noted: Fayette PA Henry Clay Somerset PA Addison, Elk Lick, Greenville, Southampton Bedford Londonderry, Cumberland Valley, Southampton, Mann Fulton PA Union, Bethel, Thompson Franklin PA (not sure of order) Warren, Fulton, Montgomery, Antrim, Washington Adams PA (not sure of order) Liberty, Freedom, Cumberland, Mount Joy, Germany, Union York PA West Manheim, Manheim, Codorus, Shrewsbury, New Freedom, Hopewell, Faun, Fawngrove, Peach Bottom, Delta Lancaster PA Fulton, Little Britain (doesn't quite meet border) Chester PA West Nottingham, East Nottingham, Elk, Franklin, London Britain (district numbers in parenthesis) Garrett MD Allegany MD Washington MD (not sure of order) Lettersburg (9), Fountainhead (27), Maugansville (13), Wilsons (23), Clear Spring (4), Indian Spring (15), Hancock (5) Frederick MD (not sure of order) Emmitsburg (5), Hauvers (10), Thurmon (15) Carroll MD (not sure of order) Taneytown (1), Meyers (3), Manchester (6) Baltimore MD (not sure of order and do not have names) District 6, District 7 Harford MD (not sure of order) Marshall (4), Dublin (5) Cecil MD Oakwood (8), Rising Sun (6), Calvert (9), Fairhill (4) One of the only clues I have to locate the family of my great-great grandfather, William Lynch, born 1829, is that he was born on or near the state line between PA and MD. Since there were a substantial number of Lynch families in these counties during this period, this helps to narrow the search significantly. I hope that it may also help someone else in a similar way. Sincerely, Gordon Lynch Researching the LYNCH and LINGENFELTER families of MD, PA, and NY Gordon Dean Lynch glynch@midwestinfo.com

Gordon, I don't believe the info you seek is on line. It is in "The Pennsylvania Line", pub. by Southwest Penna. Genealogical Services, PO Box 253 Laughlin Town PA 15655. I don't think they have a web page. Perhaps your local historical society would have a copy. The county maps are there, as well as county and twp. formation dates. Hope this helps, Bill

    3. Not sure the GNIS will help much in this case. Have not found much on townships in it... What is needed is a history of township formation and dates. Even if the current township lines were provided, what they were historically would be necessary also. If someone has this information, it would be great to post it to the USGW county site AND the USGW archives for Franklin. -- joe

    1. [PAFRANKL] Mor (Moore)
    2. Melinda Van Bossuyt
    3. Ann Douglass was married to a Mor. This information was gleaned from a will in Butler County written in 1804 by her father Andrew Douglass. While he wrote the will and died in Butler County, he had just recently moved from Franklin County, Fannett Twp. Some of his already married children stayed behind in Franklin County. I don't know if that was the case with Ann. I hope this information is helpful to somebody, if not to the person currently inquiring about Moore. I would be interested in communicating with anyone who thinks they may have a connection. I would like to know the first name of Ann's husband. Melinda Van Bossuyt http://www.teleport.com/~llamabb/

    1. [PAFRANKL] mid 1700's Cumberland Co. Families
    2. Hello: Seeking the names of those living in the area of Hopewell Twp and surrounding Cumberland County mid 1700's. Our Ancestor, Hugh Brady (born 1709) and wife Hannah, and family were living there then. The Brady Family Heritage Association is trying to locate descendants of those early residents of Cumberland County for a gathering of reunions in Cumberland County. The Bradys just had a reunion last week in Shippensburg (the first in over 23 years) and we had over 200 in attendance. Our next reunion, "Christmas at the Homestead", a summer celebration of pioneer Christmas traditions, will be held in 2-3 years. Hugh and Hannah would have invited their neighbors over for the celebration. We are inviting all descendants of those early families to join us in honoring your proud heritage and ours. The Bradys would like descendants of other families of the same time period to have their reunions at the same time. Timeline is: 2-3 years down the road - date will be confirmed within 2 months from now. Some of those families are: Young, Hanna, Craig, Carnahan, Irvine, Ferguson, Herron, Quigley . . . .and ? We are trying to find the names of heads of household or landowners before the Revolution. Come and join with us. Come home with your families. Let's have a weekend together sharing the history and fellowship that bound them together so many years ago. We will have Revolutionary War Re-enactors (the best group you will ever see), a bagpiper, etc. Lots of genealogy, history, etc. Whether or not your family has an organization, all are welcome. Please contact me for further. Each family living in Cumberland County during that time period should be represented. Help is needed in identifying the families of that time period. If your ancestor lived in Cumberland County, PA between 1730 and 1776, please contact us. Don't be left out - here is a wonderful opportunity to journey back home. Let us hear from you! Your ancestors are counting on you! Donna Cuillard Brady Family Heritage Association
