Looking for parents/siblings on Alexander and John Elder who resided in Fannett Township in the early 1800s. Also, looking for possible connections to an Elizabeth Elder who married Josiah Miller. The three Elders later resided in Wood Co., Ohio. Does anyone know where a copy of the book *Descendants of Robert Elder* can be viewed/obtained? It was written by a Ms. Gillespie. Any help appreciated. Donna Wolf

Hi! This is info I've picked up in research: "Historical Sketch of Franklin County" by I.H. McCauley, 1876 To paraphrase: p. 136 Township of Metal 1795 formed out of southern end of Fannettsburg. Earliest settlers were Campbell and others. Presbyterian church formed 1767 for whole valley. Disagreement on placement in valley; 2 churches were formed. Lower Path Valley Church located about 1 mile south of where Fannettsburg stands today. Upper Path Valley Church built where Spring Run is today. Rev. Amos McGinley was pastor to both churches 1802-1851. Churches of the Valley, FHS film #0897357 An historical sketch of the Old Presbyterian Congregations of Cumberland and Franklin Counties in Penn. by the Rev. Alfred Nevin of the Presbytery of Carlisle Philadelphia: Joseph M. Wilson 1852 p. 219 1773 Rev. David Denny was called to Upper & Lower Churches of Path Valley and served 1793 - 1800 when he moved on to Chambersburg. Rev. Amos A. McGinley was a native of Adams County and served 1802 to 1851. Hope this helps someone. GAil Barham
Hi Gail and List: THANK YOU so much Gail for the transcript of marriages. It seems that the William RICHARDSON listed below is a son of William and Elizabeth BROCK RICHARDSON and the brother to my 4th or 5th great-grandfather, Elias [aka Elizar] RICHARDSON. William RICHARDSON [listed below] was the eldest son while Elias was the youngest. THANKS again..... Donna HELLER ZINN of Newville, Cumberland Co., PA. ************************* Gail C. Would like to have more information on the above couple. He was born in Greencastle, I believe. He took care of the land probate on Daniel Mowrey's land in the latter 1800's. I have found a memorial window in a small Lutheran church in Indiana with their names, but don't know why they are there? I do know that Amanda Miller was Daniel Mowrey's granddaughter and that some of the Mowrey boys moved to the area in Indiana where this church is located. Would love to know if Isaac and Amanda moved there also as I can't find anything in the area about them. Thank you, Sincerely, Marilyn Barber Indiana
Hello, I'm looking for any information on the HISSONG family in Greencastle. Jeremiah Gardiner's family in particular. He was born 1/12/1842 and married Jennie Belle OSBAUGH? or OSBRAUGH? or OSBORNE? on 12/3/1872 in Greencastle. His mother's maiden name could be Rebecca GARNER? or GORMAN?, and hers could be Catherine COSIER? I've gotten this information off hand written death certificates so forgive me for the spelling...it's the best I could do, so if any of these names look remotely familiar please contact me. I've hit a brick wall with these families. Thanks, Diane Reese octavian7@netzero.net

None of those first names in the Lower Path Valley records. I remember seeing the name of Rowland Harris in the southern part of the county, Peter Twp I think (I have a brother Rowland, so the name jumps out when I see it) Just checked the Upper West Conococheague Presbyterian records. Rowland Harris had several children baptized there, mostly 'unnamed' but Rowland Jr was baptized 24 Nov 1805, and Benjamin 4 Jan 1807. This would have been near Mercersburg in the southwest corner of the county. ----- Original Message ----- From: Roulx@aol.com To: cks@pa.net Sent: Thursday, February 08, 2001 10:53 AM Subject: Re: [PAFRANKL] Upper Path Valley Presbyterian Church Rowland, Rowland Jr., Benjamin Harris, for starters. Will send this to the entire list so that others can chime in-- In the 1790 census, your Dugal McCartney is living near Hannah Maxell who died 1805 in Montgomery Twp. Neighbors James Ramsey andJohn Golden are mentioned in the will of John Jerritt who died 1801 in Montgomery, so it is probably safe to assume that your Dugal lived in Montgomery. The only church that I know of in Montgomery with existing records from this time period is Upper West Conococheague Presbyterian of Mercersburg. I checked those records. There is a Henry McCarty but no Dugal. Maybe someone can help here??? On your visit you probably should plan to visit both the Historical Society and the courthouse. Kittochtinny has the early land warrants, including those from Lancaster and Cumberland that pertain to Franklin (I do not know if they are complete) The courthouse has the deeds and complete copies of the wills. Fortunately, the two are very close together. You can walk between them in just a few minutes. I also have a McCartney (Carty/ McCarty) from this area: William McCartney (a1760-1808 Fannett Twp, Franklin County, PA) married 1781 Anne Wallace (a1765-p1808), daughter of William Wallace (d a1791 Franklin) and his wife Margaret. Children of William and Anne: 1. William W. (1785 Franklin-1864 Franklin) married 1811 Spring Run Presbyterian, Jane Wilson (1782-1863) daughter of George Wilson and Isabella Bennett. William and Jane are both buried at Spring Run. 7 children 2. Margaret (c1790-p1850) married 1828 Spring Run to David Elder (died a1850 Juniata County). 3 known children 3. James (c1788 or1796-1860) No issue. The variation in James birth dates are from the census and his tombstone. 4. Isabella (c1792-1870) 5. Elizabeth (c1799-1859) The last three children never married and always lived together, and next door to their brother William and his family. They are all buried in Spring Run Presbyterian Cemetery. If you ever run into any information on the parents of William McCartney Sr, I would appreciate your sending it to me. Thanks! I'd like to have that too. I don't know whether mine would be in upper or lower Path Valley church and cemetery. Any Harris' listed in either? Patricia

Hi Listers, Looking for advice and help........Plan to visit Franklin County when the weather breaks, I am interested in very old county records circa 1790. I found my gggggrandfather, Dugal McCartney (McCarty) (1756-1822) in the 1790 census-page 115, (although unable to ascertain the township) this is where he married and started his family of five. In 1795 he moved to Huntingdon County where he has been fairly easy to track. I am interested in birth dates of his children: John (1788-1865), Lewis (c1790-1833) , Jane (McPherson) (c1792-b1860), Martha (Hunter) (c1793-1857) & Allen (c1795-b1850), his marriage to Margaret (no surname, possibly Gwin) (c1760-b1800). I also am interested in his service in the Revolutionary War, either on the Continental Line or in the Franklin Co militia. I assume the marriage and birth records would be at the local church, since the state was not keeping these records at the time. But unfortunately I don't know the township. Is there a collection of the old Presbyterian church records anywhere? Are there any Rev. War Militia Records available? Should I visit the courthouse for land records or is everything located at the historical society? Any advice & help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Sharon
