    1. Re: Brown Hill, Sugar Grove (and some BROWN names)

    3. Hi, Kathy, Do you know who your very first BROWN ancestor was here in America? Was it Richard BROWNE by any chance? If so, I'd like to know what family lineage Samuel had from Richard. I know that Samuel was quite illustrious in Sugar Grove because he and Diantha came so early, for one thing. Is that why you took for granted that Brown Hill was named after him? I heard there was a BROWN who was involved in selling land to new settlers at the time, but I don't know if this was Samuel or not. Did your Samuel family live on Brown Hill? At any rate, there seem to be several BROWNs in the area by the 1830s. I have tax assessment pages going back to 1829. Names were alphabetized. The page of the Bs that I have for 1829 Brokenstraw lists two of my BROWNs (Cyrus and Cyrenus, Jr.) and Samuel, Jr. 1830 Brokenstraw lists three of mine (Cyrenus Sr, Cyrenus Jr, and Cyrus) and also Samuel, Sr. (1830 census for Brokenstraw lists only two of mine (Daniel B. and Cyrenus) 1832 Brokenstraw lists my Elijah...but also your Samuel and a Peter. 1833 Sugar Grove lists my Elijah and my Cyrus and also Zuse (?--might be a contraction), Nathan W., and Janet 1834 Sugar Grove lists Elijah, Cyrus, Nathan, Janet, and Samuel (he had a cow worth $10 and a tavern worth $50) 1840 Sugar Grove lists James, Janet, Nathaniel, Solomon, and my Cyrenus. Additionally, I have a page of BROWNs from the Index to Deeds for Warren Co. who were grantees. In Brokenstraw or Sugar Grove those BROWNs listed are David (1814/1822), Jennet (1830), my Cyrenus (1841). So, you see, your Samuel and family were not the only BROWNs there in that era.
