I've been silently monitoring this list for some time now and just wanted to post a quick comment. I spent the first 19 years of my life a mile and a half east of Route 62 on Route 957. I became a member of this list out of simple curiosity. I had no concept of the intricate evolution of history of the area I called home until I joined this list. The reference to remote cemeteries, roads and hills brings back so many memories of hours of wandering in my 72' Super Beetle over the dirt roads and right aways where I grew up. I would like to search my lineage and was wondering where someone like myself who works a 45 hour work week would start? I have a copy of the History of Pine Grove Township but it doesn't seem to be a true resource of family history. Tracy Stanton Olean, N.Y.
Dear Tracy: Family history is fascinating. Researching and putting together a pedrigree is like learning any other hobby. There is a method to it and principles to learn. There are many books for beginners, you can get them from Amazon.com. Bascially there are two steps 1. Gathering the information ie where to find the records and what records to look for. 2. Anaylzing the formation to put together the facts into a complete picture ie which information to decide is valid and what does not fit your ancestor. And the last thing: it is important to start with the lastest dates and ancestors and work backwards, not jumping ahead ie death dates of grandpa, then marriage, then birth, then death dates of great grandpa. The places that most everyone starts at is gathering information from all older relatives, verbal and physical materials that might have names and dates. Then sending for vital records(birth record, etc) from the goverment. The other place most of us start for our ancestors that were alive in 1920 and before is the government federal census. There is a lot to learn and do but it is a blast while you are doing it. Dont worry about working long hours and not having a lot of time. Your dead ancestors are not going anywhere and if you get the genealogy bug, you will spend your whole life looking for them in your spare time. LOL ---So download some pedrigree and family forms from a internet site and start filling in the blanks! Diana
Looking for MCCRAYS that might have been living in the area around1830's, parents names JAMES AND MARY MCCRAY, children were DAVID and PERRY. Later PERRY MCCRAY married HANNAH ELMIRA LADU and DAVID MCCRAY married a girl named ESTER (ESTHER). Not sure of the marriage dates, guessing around 1850's to 1860's. Is therre someone who could help me out with finding this family? Thank you so much. Verna
More on Sugar Grove Browns. Truman Job Tobey lived on Brown Hill from the late 1890s to the late 1940s. The house, according to my husband, was called the Black house (probably the family that built the house). The next house toward Youngsville on Brown Hill was referred to as the Brown house, even though when my husband can remember the Browns no longer lived there. He visited his grandfather Truman Job in the late 1920s through around 1940. I think Truman Job died about 1949. So if someone has access to the recorder's office they should be able to go back in deed records and find out which Brown lived next to the Black/Tobey house. After Truman Job died his daughter and husband whose name was Sullivan lived in the house. Now that I have you thoroughly confused, Happy Thanksgiving to all! Where is Union Grove Cem. located? Do you have any dates for Lorenzo Smith? Sue in New York
One way to get to Brown Hill in Warren Co. is go to Youngsville, go up past the Youngsville Cem. until you reach the Y, the road to the right is Brown Hill the road to the left is Indain Camp Run, This is in Warren Co. Another way to get there is go to Mathews Run find Fidlers Hill go to the end and you are on Brown Hill. There used to be a school on Brown Hill, I would say until 1915, then the children went to Chandlers Valley. There is a Church on the road, I don't know anything about their records. Sue in New York
When researching in Warren County do not overlook the Warren Public Library, on Market Street about 2 blocks from the Historical Society and I may add the Historical Society is next door to the Court House. The Library is very accomodating to genealogy inquiries as well as the Court House employees. Would like to know where Cobbs corners is. My brother in law's name is Cobb. I live in Warren. HELP! If anyone can help me, please! I keep coming up with nothing on my great grandfather John B. Stevenson, Sr. or my Grandmother's family Minnie Laura Hoyt. If anyone can give me any information or if any of these names sound familiar I would appreciate anything. Below is what I know so far. Faternal: My grandfather John B. Stevenson Jr. was married to Minnie Laura Hoyt. They lived in Sheffield and North Warren, PA. I have no information on my grandmother. Their children were Doris Lorene b. 7/31/1906, John Kenneth b. 10/15/1912 and my father, Robert Louis Stevenson b. 10/15/1922. My father Robert L. is the only living descendent born before my generation that I know of. My great-grandfather was John B. Stevenson, Sr. (middle name Baby?) (born ? - died 12/24/1914 Clarendon, Warren County). He married Arabelle Swartzwelder (born 5/30/1860 - died 5/2/1918) in Duke Center, McKean County 4/16/1880. Their children were Barbara May b. 1/26/1881, John B. Jr. b. 3/4/1885 (my grandfather), and Lorene Florence b. 5/28/1891. I have no further information on John B. Sr., as he told the story of running away from home at 15 to join the union troops in the Civil War (PA company E 8/23/1863 -6/2/1865). (I had requested his pension records from the national archives but they came up blank also.) He refused to talk about his family, which we believe came from the Titusville or Oil City area. The dates he served in the union puts his birth year somewhere around 1848. I believe he was buried in a Veteran's Cemetery in Warren County, then his grave was moved when Arabelle died to be next to hers. Arabelle's parents were John A. Swartzwelder (b. 6/2/1830 - d. 12/10/1870 Sandy Creek, PA) and Jemima Winans Titus (b. 10/4/1826 - d. 12/8/1899 N. Clarendon, Warren Co.). They were married 9/6/1853 at Goheenville,PA. Their children were Harriet Jane b. 6/13/1854, Barbara Anne b. 9/10/1855, Edward Everett b. 7/29/1858 and Arabelle b. 5/30/1860. I have no more information on Jemima, is she a Titus from Titusville? John A. Swartzwelder's parents were Joseph Swartzwelder (b. 1809 - d. ? ) and Barbara Amsbaugh (b. 10/20/1805 - d. 4/20/1880). Their children were Isaac, Mary Jane, William, Thomas W., John A., Elizabeth K., Miles L., Benjamin, Anna Clarinda, Laura and Nancy Margaret. Other names that come up are: Harriet Jane Swartzwelder married James Fagan 7/16/1879 at Duke Center by Father Coonan. Children John Thomas Fagan b. 5/3/1880 Duke Center, William Benjamin Fagan b. 6/16/1882 Little Gennesse NY, James Arthur b. 2/5/1884 Altoona, Pa, Richard Chrysoston b. 2/18/1886 Tiona, Pa, Margaret Jane b. 12/15/1887 Tiona, Pa, Florence Gertrude b. 11/14/1890 N. Clarendon. Barbara Anne Swartzwelder married Charles Goehring Arlington 6/29/1881 at Eldred, PA Edward Everett Swartzwelder married Nellie Kane 9/10/1883. (I do have some childrens names on these two also, if you would like them.) Thank you, Darlene Stevenson Plough Sarasota, FL Stcomp@gonelco.com
Hi I went to the Warren Co PA. Historical Society today and it was a long trip for very little info The BROWN family in the Wintergreen Cemetery on County rd 69 between Busti and Sugar Grove, in PA. were from Belfast Ireland. There was NO info available on the COBB of Cobb Corners, the Cobb cemetry fell into the swamp, and others in the area used the tombstones for sidewalks, and stepping stones, the records were kept in the church which has been torn down and no records found. There is no further info on Lorenzo Brown he was born somewhere and buried in Bear Lake, Period. My Orrin Brown was no where to be found. NOT a productive day.
