Recently, GLENN TUNNEY, who writes a column about Brownsville in the Uniontown paper, wrote two columns about the sinking of the Dorchester and the four chaplains who went down with the ship. They are columns #259 and #260. The web address is: http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~glenntunneycolumn/group11.htm In a Your Brownsville and Mine Column, (no date, but I am assuming from it position in the scrapbook, it may have been the first week of Nov. 1976), John J. Bogorae mentions a book, "The Men The Ships" tells of the ship that was struck by a German torpedo and went down 100 miles from Greenland. 672 lives were lost, among them, 4 chaplains who gave their life jackets to others on the sinking ship. JAMES F. CAULLEY, a retired Brownsville business man was on that ship as the assistant purser of the Dorchester. Mr. CAULLEY donated the book to the Brownsville Free Public Library in memory of his friend, EDWIN BINNS. The book was written by CHESTER SZYMCZAK, who was among 10 of the 24 Navy Armed guard gun crew members who were rescued. In that same column, Bogarae notes the retirement of PHILIP BRODY, currently of Fort Lauderdale, FL, who is retiring this week from the ladies apparel business. In 1955, he opened J&L Fashions at 12 Market St. in Brownsville. While MR. BRODY, was living in Florida, the store in Brownsville was managed by MRS. MARY LEON. MR. BRODY also had high praise for the employees, MRS. WILMA STEVENS, MISS HELEN KEKELY, and MRS. MINNIE HOLLIS. MR. BOGARAE also mentions that FRANK J. KURTIK, a resident of Daisytown, has a fine article in the JULY issue of Western Pennsylvania Historical Magazine, a Pittsburgh based quarterly. It's entitled: "The Roscoe Ledger" a portrait of the Upper Monongahela Valley's boom years. Mentioned in the historical item are newspapers that served the area, including the Brownsville Clipper, the California Sentinel, the Roscoe Ledger, the Roscoe Forum, the Belle Vernon Enterprise, the Charleroi Mirror, the Charleroi Mail, Donora American, Monessen News and the Monongahela Times.
