Hello again to all you wonderful listers. In the height of my busy season, I will be heading off with my husband to Pittsburgh in early April. Amid a major home renovation, all my gen. boxes are now in storage. (to bad I didn't know earlier!). I want to know does anyone know if the Carnegie Library has relatively long hours? weedays or weekends? How far is New Salem, Fayette to central Pittsburgh (hotel unknown right now). Is it worth it to visit a New Salem Historical Society or Fayette county Historical society, if perhaps some of their data might also be available at Carnegie? I need to rent a car, so trying to gauge how much time I should allow for that too. Buffington patch town: is this area somewhat like what the area looked like say 1910ish? or completely redone? My husband's Irish immigrant greatgrandparents raised their family there. Cousins to to my husband's Dad still remain in the area; other family members to Indiana county, Pa. (been there). I appreciate any and all you might help me with timewise. Don't know if Dawne or Wanda or Ed will be around the area, I'd love to say hi! My husband is a 5-8th grade coach (in our home town) taking the kids and parents to the National Chess tournaments. I don't want to sit around and watch people play chess, if you know what I meanThanks Thanks again Dean NJ researching in western Pa: Murray/Cook/Grimes/Allison/Jeffries/Rittenhouse/Kerr?Bhe/Work/Scroggs/Ir eland eastern Pa: Vandergrift/Rohrbach/Newmoyer/Lester and associated families......
Dear Dean, I'll answer a little bit of this & others can add to it. The Carnegie Library in the Oakland Section of Pittsburgh is open long hours during the week but closes around 5 on Friday. You can get their hours on line & possibly additional info. You need to know that there is a parking lot that is outside (between the Hillman Library & it) but it is a little costly so be prepared for that. The traffic going in to Pgh. on the Parkway will be very heavy in the morning but if you are in a hotel right in Pittsburgh then you could use other methods of reaching the bldg. Uniontown is a couple hours from Pittsburgh, allowing for traffic. Yes, the PA Room in Oakland will have some things not in the Uniontown Library PA Room & visa versa. You really should (must) visit both places. I'd suggest you make an outline of exactly what you wish to accomplish & what is needed. Keep in mind that the library in Oakland has all the census for every census year in all of PA. DEAN There is a Holiday Inn within walking distance of the Library. It is a Holiday Inn on Lytton Street and it DOES have parking which is at a premium in Pittsburgh. Tony Keefer
