Hello Lawrence, My grandma is completely Slovak so I have some knowledge in this area. Slovakia for the longest time was underneath Austria-Hungaria so as a result many Slovaks were mistakenly labeled Hungarian, Austrian, or Slovak. This is what makes Slovak genealogy SO confusing sometimes. Also Slovak is the original Slavic language so as a result some other more well known Slavic languages such as Polish or Russian were confused with it. So my guess is that the census taker heard them possibly speaking their Slovak to each other or noticed a Eastern European accent and mistakenly assumed they were speaking Russian. PA and OH were the two great Slovak hubs in America and my grandma's father was from Cleveland while her mother was from PA.
