Hi, I am researching my LONG family from Bullskin Township, Fayette County, PA..my husband descends from Joseph Long (d. 1829) through his son, Jacob B. Long (b. about 1786, d. 1867, married Nancy Eicher.) Research has been done for the tax lists for the Long surname from 1790-1850..I have found a potential brother to Jacob B. Long and was writing to inquire about the Findley Furnace/Breakneck area of Fayette County, PA and the David B. LONG family. I have found a David B. Long (born 1800 according to census records) listed in the tax records 1828 to 1838 as a manager/owner of an iron works.there was a Long and Ramsey Iron Masters listed in the 1829 tax lists and a Long and Ferrer iron masters listed in the 1830 tax lists. David B. Long and Co. is listed in the 1837 and 1838 tax lists. In the 1830 census records, David B. Long is listed in Salt Lick Township, Fayette County, PA (roll 162, page 300).David is age 30 to under 40, he is married and has an infant daughter. He also has a male and female (age 15 and under 20) living with him. Future census records find David B. Long and family in 1840 Beaver Township, Venango County, PA (roll 497, page 71) and 1850-1860 Clarion County, PA. In 1850, children listed with David B. Long (age 50) and wife Sarah A. (age 39) are: N. H. Long (female, age 21), J. H. Long (male, age 20), Elizabeth (age 17), Mary (age 13), Joseph (age 11), Edwin (age 9), Sloan B. (age 7), Gertrude (age 6), and David (age 3.) From a history of Clarion County, I found information that David B. Long was a prothonotary and died while in office in July 1860. I also have a copy of his son Joseph W. Long's obituary (someone on the Clarion County message board kindly did a look up for me:-)).as follows: Obituaries From Clarion Newspapers 1895-1900 Compiled by Sally Jordan Reed Published by Mechling Bookbindery Chicora,Pa. Page 220 Date of newspaper-23 Aug 1900 On last Monday morning about 12:30,Mr.Joseph W.Long, who had been ill for nine weeks, passed away. During his illness he was a great sufferer and when death visited him he was unconscious, in which state he had been for several hours. Mr.Long was born at Findley Furnace,Fayetre(sic) county,April 24,1838 and was a son of Hon.and Mrs.D.B.Long, to whom nine children were born, only four of whom still survive: viz:Mrs. Elizabeth Potter, of Reynoldsville, Mrs .R.B. Brown, of Meadville; Mrs. E.Lawson, of Clarion, and D.B. Long of New Castle. All these were present at the funeral and all but Mrs.Brown were by his side when he died.On Sept.27,1866,he was married to Miss Rebecca Brown who died on Dec.20,1875.To them were born five children, David, Edwin L., of Shippenville, Sarah A., Ralph G., of Clarion and Frank, who died several years ago. Mr. Long was well known throughout the county, having been appointed in 1860 to fill out the term of his father, Hon. D.B. Long who at the time of his death was Prothonotary. In 1869, he was elected Recorder and re-elected in 1872.He was also clerk in the Treasurers office for three years and census enumerator in 1880.He was well known as a surveyor and draftsman. He was an upright man and an excellent citizen and a man who had many friends. The Remains were interred in the Clarion cemetery Tuesday at 3 p.m.,Rev.G.B.Robinson, officiating. I am writing to gather information about the Findley Furnace/Breakneck district of Fayette County (the Longs were a pioneer family of the area, along with the Herbert family) and to see if anyone had any information about the David B. Long family (I do not know the maiden name of David's wife, Sarah Ann.there is an IGI file that lists his wife as Mary A. Sloan..as yet unproven:-)) Any help you could be or direction you could point me to research would be greatly appreciated. I have information from census/marraige records and other obituaries about Elizabeth, Mary, Sloan B. and Gertude Long, children of David B. Long if anyone is interested. Thank you for your time, Alison Bigbee
