John POPOVICH, 85, of Charleroi, Pa., died Tuesday, February 3, 2004 in Monongahela Valley Hospital Inc., Carroll Township, Pa. He was born March 6, 1918 in Monessen, Pa., son of John POPOVICH and Anna PORCHONICK Popovich. He was a member of Saint Mary Byzantine Catholic Church in Monessen and the P.S.E.R. Mr. Popovich was a United States Army Veteran. A standout football player for Monessen High School, John went on to play football for Saint Vincent College, Latrobe, Pa., and the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 1944 and 1945 seasons. Mr. Popovich also had coached the following teams: Brownsville High, Waynesburg College, Atlantic City Senators, Wheeling Ironmen and the Washington Mustangs. Mr. Popovich's devotion to football earned him induction to the Mid-Mon Valley Hall of Fame in 1999. He was an employee of Brownsville Area High School who taught Biology, Science, and Driver's Education prior to his retirement. Mr. Popovich was preceded in death by a son, John POPOVICH, and parents. Surviving are his wife, Agnes BOGDAN Popovich; Grandson, Jonathan POPOVICH, Daughter-in-Law, Shirley; a brother, Mike and Ann Popovich, of Monessen, Pa.; Nephew, Tom Bogdan and wife, Joan, of Ohio; and Sister-in-Law, Mrs. Nick (Millie) Cole, of Donora, Pa. Friends will be received at the RHOME FUNERAL HOME INC., A Golden Rule Funeral Home, 1209 Grand Boulevard, Monessen, PA 15062 today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. where a Blessing Service will be held Saturday, February 7, at 10 a.m. Divine Liturgy follows at 10:30 a.m. in Saint Mary Byzantine Catholic Church, Monessen, Pa. Interment will follow in Saint Mary's Cemetery, Monessen, Pa.
