John W. (Whitey) KOVAL, 81, of 433 Scottdale Ave., Scottdale, died Wednesday in Jeannette District Memorial Hospital. He was born in Scottdale on Nov. 8, 1905, a son of the late John and Theresa Koval. He was a member of St. John Byzantine Catholic Church of Scottdale. He was employed by A and P Tea Company from July 31, 1933 to 1970. In 1962 he opened a new A and P store in Scottdale and served as manager until his retirement. He was fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus Bishop O'Connor General Assembly. He was past secretary and exulted ruler of Scottdale BPO Elks Lodge 777. He is survived by his wife, Catherine Ann Papier Koval; a son, Richard J. of Connellsville, three daughters, Sr. Barbara Mary, S.C., Mrs. Richard (Evelyn) Farris and Kathleen E., all of Scottdale; six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by seven brothers, Peter, Theodore, Metro, Andrew, Michael, Nick, and Harry Koval, and two sisters, Mary K. Mehallick and Ann K. Zgorecki.
