Ancestry.com has John Wilders under John Gildera! If you can it pays to look at the original! How does that happen? Someone can't read the writing on a census, or it is messed up in the transfer from census to Ancestry? -------Original Message------- From: PAFAYETT-L@rootsweb.com Date: Monday, February 02, 2004 6:12:22 PM To: PAFAYETT-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [PAFAY] Robert WILDERS - 1930 Census Ancestry.com has John Wilders under John Gildera! Both! The handwriting is sometimes hard to read and I have seen some real "boo boos" on Ancestry. But to give them a little credit, it can be really hard to read that old writing (and a lot of new writing too!). This entry looked like "Childers" to me unless you knew what you were looking for. Just think of the census taker, writing things down without a desk, just leaning the forms on whatever was around and you can see why their handwriting is less than textbook perfect. Also sometimes the census taker didn't ask how people spelled their surname and wrote it down the way it sounded. Things often got pretty creative! That is why it is helpful when you can see the originals and decide for yourself what it supposed to say!
