Mary Catherine MILLER Reed, 92, of Dunbar, Pa., passed away Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004. She was born May 4, 1911, in Dunbar, Pa., a daughter of the late John Mason and Anna Lloyd THOMAS MILLER. A graduate of Dunbar Township High School, Class of 1929, she later attended the University of Pittsburgh. She was united in marriage to the late James B. REED, on Nov. 14, 1929. A lifelong resident of Dunbar, she was engaged in business having owned Reed's Dairy Bar, where they made their own ice cream and chocolate candies from 1934 to 1950. She also owned and operated Reed's Grocery, the first in Western Pennsylvania to have self-service with shopping carts. On March 27, 1950, President Harry S. Truman appointed her Postmaster at Dunbar, a position she held for 26 years, retiring in January, 1976. She was a member of the Franklin Memorial United Methodist Church of Dunbar, and a former member of the Star Bible Class. She was an active member of the National League of Postmasters, Pennsylvania Postmasters Association, Connellsville Alpha Y Gradale, Connellsville Chapter No. 247 Order of the Eastern Star, Margaret E. Caven Shrine No. 42, White Shrine of Jerusalem of Uniontown, and a former member of the Dunbar American Legion Auxiliary. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James B. REED, in 1947; a son, James J. REED, in February, 2001; three sisters, Margaret Lancaster, Nellie Tremba and Pearl Benvenuto; and two brothers, Clark and John M. MILLER. She is survived by a daughter, Anna Catherine (Kitty) Reed-Strawn and husband, George Robert Strawn, of Connellsville, Pa.; a daughter-in-law, Mary L. Reed, of Uniontown, Pa.; two grandsons, James W. REED and wife, Tina, and Robert E. REED and wife, Julie, of Uniontown; a granddaughter, Kathy Lynne and husband, Dr. Anthony Marano, of Lexington, Ky.; seven great-grandchildren, Robert, Joshua, Danielle, Ryan and Kelsey REED and Alyssa and Nicholas Marano; a sister, Mabel Smell and a sister-in-law, Ruby Jean Miller, both of Dunbar; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Ruth Hall. Catherine's family will greet friends in the PAUL G. FINK FUNERAL HOME INC., 418 North Pittsburgh St., Connellsville, Pa., today from 4 to 9 p.m., and on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Additional viewing will be held at the Franklin Memorial United Methodist Church, 54 Bridge St., Dunbar, on Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon, the hour of the funeral service, with the Rev. Jeffrey Popson and the Rev. Scott Berkeley officiating. Private interment will follow in Green Ridge Memorial Park, Pennsville. The Margaret E. Caven Shrine No. 42 White Shrine of Jerusalem will hold a service in the funeral home on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Order of the Eastern Star service will follow at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Mary Catherine's name to the Franklin United Methodist Church, 54 Bridge St., Dunbar, PA 15431, or Dunbar Community Library, 60 Connellsville St., Dunbar, PA 15431.
